    As an electrician that does strictly remodels this is an absolute essential tool. czcams.com/users/postUgkx0vyBwjtx9GGOuiqUVT2sRoYqmDoNT_RI Being able to precision cut any material with a light weight tool is priceless.I upgraded to this Dewalt 20v from a competitor's 12v. The Dewalt 20v is just as light as the competitor's 12v. I am extremely pleased with the overall performance and battery life of this tool. As far as oscillators go, they just aren't very ergonomic tools. The dewalt oscillators have an offset handle that do make them somewhat more ergonomic than the competitors' oscillators.

    Recently replaced my Signal after losing it on a trip, I got the original second hand and didn't even realize I was missing parts! Thank you for demonstrating this tool (I could not for the life of me figure out how to put the ferro rod back into the handle without your vid lol)

    I just received a Signal for Christmas. Over a year ago I picked up a Leatherman Skeletool based on a recommendation from a friend that he was surprised how often he used it. I liked it so much that it replaced my EDC knife (Benchmade Griptilian). Then I saw the signal. I love that it can easily be carried in your pocket like a knife or the Skeletool. While I don't really camp, it's nice to know that the whistle and ferro rod are there "just in case". What really drew me to the Signal is the addition of the hammer and blade sharpener. Way too many time have I tried to use a knife as a small hammer for something, and knowing that If I'm out using the knife and it just isn't quite cutting it, I can easily add a little hone to it.
    Now, for the bit driver. When I got my Skeletool, it came with the bit set. It also has an additional compartment to store an extra bit driver. I'm into compound archery, and I choose a bit driver that can adjust most screws on my sight and rest if I don't have an allen set handy, and I can also carry a Phillips head bit. The signal doesn't have this additional bit storage. That is about the only "bad" thing I can say about the Signal.
    If you are looking for a multitool that you can pocket carry, either the Signal or the Skeletool are great choices.

    This is a great multitool to have, and the only one I've ever seen that you can use to start a fire. Anyone who looks at a multitool and says "but my knife/pliers/screwdriver/lighter/saw does a better job" is totally missing the point of multitools. A multitool will never replace the functionality of a toolbox with dedicated tools, but a toolbox doesn't fit in my pocket when I'm hiking. Also, using that small ferro-rod is tough, and takes practice, but it works. Don't expect to be able to start a fire with it if you've never used one before. That's why I immediately bought replacement rods so I could practice with it and be prepared to use it in a worst case scenario.

    • @michaelhendricks9462

      @robm8809 Před rokem +3

      I'd have it in addition to another kit for firestarting, a camp knife, etc. and try to distribute on my person, it'd be galling to have all your eggs in one basket, so to speak, and lose it.

    • @MukGames
      @MukGames Před rokem +4

      @@robm8809 Ya absolutely. When camping, I always have a dedicated knife, fire kit and saw. It's a great backup. 2 is one and 1 is none.

    • @MukGames
      @MukGames Před rokem +6

      @@michaelhendricks9462 I use it daily and it's great for me. The fact that it doubles as a backup tool when I'm outdoors is a bonus, and there's nothing in it I don't use. The hammer really comes in handy as well. The only thing I'd really say is missing is scissors, but the rest of the tool set is a decent trade off for me.

    • @michaelhendricks9462
      @michaelhendricks9462 Před rokem +7

      @@MukGames I respect that evaluation and comment. I have 2 responses to it:
      1. I've never, ever seen ANY multitool (full sized, those mini things are pointless gimmicks) that isn't useful. I think EVERYONE should own one, and I think it's more important to have one than which one you have.
      2. I've worked in an industry for almost 30 years where a multitool is a requirement, used them every single day I worked, and actually worn them completely out. Every time I've replaced my tool I've tried a new one, because they're constantly changing and there's a difference between brands that I wanted to see for myself. I've owned and extensively used about a dozen of them, from every single major manufacturer.
      MOST of them are specialized in some way. The tool that's "most useful" for one thing might suck for another thing. Yours that you use for outdoors and camping would be pointless for me to carry at work.
      The point here was that in REVIEWING a tool, it's being COMPARED to other tools. And if you haven't USED those other tools, you don't know how they compare, so you can't possibly know if the one you use is better than the others or not.
      I currently own 4 multitools, all chosen for specific reasons. I have an SOG one that lives in my girlfriend's car, which is top quality and only has the tools on it she knows how to use or would care to. I have a Gerber that's designed for electricians that lives in my car, because that's the most useful for ME if I need to do some work on my car on the side of the road. My main EDC is the top-of-the-line Victorinox with all the extras, because it's more like an actual toolbox than a multitool, and with a small pouch of extra stuff it IS a full toolbox, there's nothing I can't do. And I have a decent but cheap and generic multi that lives in my band gear, JUST IN CASE somebody needs a tool and my other tools aren't nearby.
      The drawback of my EDC, which I consider the BEST multitool, is that it's very bulky on my belt compared to other tools. (But it balances my belt nicely with the pistol on the other hip.) For ME and the way I love to solve problems, fix things, dive in with the "I can fix that!" it's worth it, but I've never seen anyone else, professional or otherwise, carrying that tool. (I've also seen them walk half a mile to their car to get a tool that I have in my pocket, and got the job done before they got back.)
      A hammer is the LEAST useful tool, because you can literally use anything to just beat on stuff. I've used every one of my multitools as a hammer many times, and none of them have had a "hammer" on them.
      On the other hand, the tool I do choose to carry might be useless to you, or more than you actually NEED for your intended purposes. Again, the point is you CAN'T know what's best, or even good, if you haven't tried and compared. I have, and IN COMPARISON to other tools... if you like it, great, but I wouldn't buy it. I KNOW what's better, because I've used better.
      My PROFESSIONAL (as in actually used the tool professionally, every day, heavy duty) opinion, and the opinion of my colleagues, is that Leatherman rides on the reputation of being the original creators of a "multitool" and creating lots of new, gimmicky tools, but they're just that... gimmicky more than useful, and they tend to wear out and break under heavy use much faster than other manufacturers'.
      Gerbers are the most common in my industry (we actually refer to multitools as "Gerbers" just like you refer to stick-on bandages as "Band-Aids" or tissues as "Kleenexes"), but they're KNOWN to not actually be the best. They're ADEQUATE ENOUGH, but not great. I've personally broken several of them.
      The BEST are known to be Victorinox, at least for OUR job, but not many people are willing to spend what one costs. (So instead they spend even more on breaking Gerbers and replacing them.)

    I've had my Signal for a year now and I think the only part of it I've never used is the awl. Last week, I was at a beach house with my extended family, and nobody had matches or a lighter to start the grill. A little dryer lint, lighter fluid, and two strikes on the Signal's ferro rod, and the grill was lit. And boy, was my 8yo nephew impressed :)
    Edited to add: I use the knife blade on the ferro rod -- the first serrated notch is wider than the others, and it's the perfect size to get full contact on the rod. I usually get a good spark on the first strike that way.

    As your name implies, for any sort of urban area this would be the ticket. As for me in rural Georgia, I have a pioneer kit in my truck at all times. Full size axe, folding saw, Esee 4, kukri or hatchet, a full fire kit, a full size wool blanket, military e-tool, etc. All fits in a pack at less than 15 pounds.
    So no, this isn't something I would carry, I see no utility in it over what I would actually need at a camp site or in a survival situation.
    Good video though, keep it up!

      Same. However, I consider a multi-level approach. I've got a full survival kit with all kinds of things in my truck. A sub-set of the critical items are in a backpack if I had to separate from the truck and move without the truck and the ability to carry a lot of things. And in my pockets are a handful of things... like a multitool like this... if you got separated from the pack. It's SOP for SF units, etc.

    • @UrbanSurvivalist_
      @UrbanSurvivalist_  Před rokem +1

      It will eventually come off with a lot of wear. As I said in the video, the signal isn't really carried or used a lot by me, so I wouldn't really know how long it the coating "lasts". In my experience with other coated blades on other knives, it usually takes a while for it to start showing signs of wear with use. You shouldn't worry about wear on knives and tools. They are meant to be used.

    Coming from Victorinox, I tried a Leatherman once. Blades were apparently made from Bud Lite cans.
    One systematic weakness is the bit driver: How are you supposed to use your pliers to hold a nut while turning a bolt? Vic's seperate bit driver is a much better idea.

    I do bushcraft and camp a lot. I have a couple of Leatherman tools which I love but for outdoors you're better off with a Victorinox fieldmaster at half the price. The back of your axe head is a far better hammer, that little fire rod is a joke and I've never needed pliers or screwdrivers so badly that the extra weight was worth carrying.
