- Miami is best known for its luxury lifestyle, Latin-infused culture, and as a popular tourist destination. This four-part documentary series focuses on Miami's most notorious ghetto 'Liberty City,' documenting the struggles, the failures and the successes of Liberty City locals. Watch this raw, uncut four-part series that captures for you aspects of Liberty City life: how things go down in the hood, violent shootings, police corruption and the drug epidemic.
Director's Note:
My aim in producing this Documentary series is to give the people of Liberty City a voice.
Though currently known for its Bad and Ugly aspects, there is also much Good in Liberty City; and the words "Hope" and "Never Give Up" remain strong in each individual in the City.
2nd Episode:
We talk to people about their experiences and problems they face on the daily in Liberty City. We also visit a historical place in Liberty City - The Scotts Project.

GORILLA SHANKS 2013 - Zábava
Young man in the red hat... very well spoken and informed. I love to see young black men who are aware of their surroundings and are able to make sense of the chaos. Knowledge is power.
Edy Hollins I felt the same way. They think we're stupid and don't know anything and that young man knew his stuff.
He gave a great on-the-ground assessment. Didn't agree with all of it, but he got his point across regardless. He needs to be writing and publishing .
He kind of a midget but that dude is reeeeallll intelligent
I’m white and I agree with almost everything he said
@@nomibe2911 no one ever said black people are stupid, it's stereotypes
Dude in the Red hat verry wise
And you very cute
I'm probably the only person watching in 2019. I pray that the brother in the red hat is still with us. Dropping jewels.
That boy was speaking the truth at 4:45
Dude with Red cap either got Knowledge of Self or is on the right path if not. Good brother right there.
yea i had made boutt same comment.. kid att 7mins seems smart.. hope he prosper in life.. stay smart younster..
as a native floridian i can tell you this documentary is spot on. thank you for making this.
So much respect for the guy at 13:10 I hope everything works out for him
The dude selling waters seem like a real humble, hard working guy. I hope he gets a job one day.
NestaOG He should have used the USAF the way most guys do- leave home and never, ever come back.
I do hope things get better for him. Honorable fella.
Dude in the red hat....PREACH LIL BRU..PREACH!!!!!!
One thing I learned through these videos: It is what it is. Also that its easy to speak for a long time without actually saying anything.
Nice work on this. This documentary
deserves an award man. People who don't know how it is growing up or living in the hood, can see that we are people too. And smart folks. Keep up the great work.
Young bruh in the red hat got some knowledge. Preach it brother!
The kid in the red hat knows his stuff!!
the boy with the red hat had my full attention. that was some real talk
No make up. No script. Just candid conversations and personal views of the people of a broken city. I appreciate Miami so much more.
The dude with the red hat at the 8:00 minute mark knew his shit. He made my hometown look good. Salute!!!
+nomibe2911 How is that? Thats ALL he knows!
+nomibe2911
He did not know his shit. That is what he understands and perceives from his perspective and what he gets from his peers. Unfortunately, this in itself is a contributor. Wrong information leads to wrong decisions and ultimately bad actions.
*****
I'm not even going to get into this. Because what he thinks and you also does not change anything except what you want to believe because it makes you feel better. Still does not fix the problem. its the never ending story.
blame-shifting.
*****
Point of the fact is, 20% of what he said was correct. Just because there in some important facts here and there doesn't mean shit. What he has said and how he "thinks" he needs to approach it are 2 diff things. If he knew SO much, why is he still in the hood with his bro's? He reminds me of a black Charles Mansion. Spits out interesting lines but cant do shit to actually make a difference in his life or others.
P.S. Dont be a grammar Nazi douche!
*****
There was a reason why you defended him verbally, but, deep down, its subliminal. If it didnt matter to you, you would not have responded, so, it matters for a reason. I could only image the reason, which in this case is negated by his position. Cut and dry for YOU, but, for the open minded, quite clear.
Cary on......
He's right...There are more BLACK ppl and black Men in College than in Jail. This young man is on it.
He's on point on that one.
from the UK..respect to the brother fronting this doc, quality viewing of a real neighborhood, some great history and modern takes on Liberty City...enjoyed very much...blessings...
yuongstet att 7mins gotta good head on his shoulders.. hope he prospers inn life.. i see ya bruh.. stay smart.. sayin be good or be good att itt..
hey bro i am a french black guy living in WEST of FRANCE , and i think its will be great to translate that amazing documentary in FRENCH , its will touch a lot of hearts right here ......and help french black people to understad the chance they got !!!BEAUTIFUL DOCUMENTARY brothers
20:04 Very humble kind spoken gentleman I pray his burdens will be lifted. I was homeless most of my life, now I own my home for 3 years now and life is good, never give up!
Education is the key to getting out but most don't want to put the work in and other circumstances compound that pursuit. One more problem is that everybody wants immediate gratification instead of working towards a goal to move up and out of these conditions.

FACTS
Nah man. It’s way deeper than that. It’s a mentality. When you’re told over and over again you can’t do something and you can only do something else, and the only life you’ll ever live is what you see around you, what’s the likelihood you’re gonna become anything else than what they expect? That’s not an excuse that’s reality. What’s gratifying about getting shot at? That ain’t fun. It’s what’s known. What we need is more people telling and showing a better way.
22:47 It used to be safe here, you didn't even have to lock your door. That changed in the 60s...
red hat got that knowledge doe!💯💯💯
Old man is cool as hell... Reminds me of my grandfather R.I.P.
The best part of this film so far (for me) was the interview with the man who sells water.
The Kid sitting on the bench with the red cap has so much potential..
Excellent Documentary. There needs to be more just like this. This is a real movie. I'm from California but people need to learn about what really goes on.
Good job Shanks. This is real good journalism. Keep it up God
Great Job on this Doc
they'd rather you believe all black people will never achieve anything in life..I love the fact the gentleman , broke it down.
Raised in dade. This shit make me miss all the ppl I used to vibe with.. damn is crazy how you can lose ALL your friends so quick.
Great doc, sad story!
Wonderfully executed documentaries.
Young guy was speaking some knowledge, things normally should be obvious, but aren't.. Good to hear that in this documentary.. Very well shot too
Thanks for the upload.
Man in Red Hat very intelligent. And well imformed of the laws
Good view! made me come visit miami next month! the real miami! Graffiti!
It's sad how people try to bash other people before understanding them.
im a 35 year old black man that has came from nothing and was able to turn that into something. I think life is all about Choices,Sacrifice and having a mind set on the Future at all times. Life is not always peaches and cream but you have to learn to take the good with the bad and when life hands you lemons make that into lemonade stay focused and im sure your life will turn around
That's the key, staying focused & not giving up. Not everything works out but if you stay focused & keep going it will eventually happen.
I been doing yoga/mindfulness classes in JJ, county jails and prisons. That kids telling it just like it is. Truly a system of injustice. It's not the fault of the jail staff, it's the system of Amerikkka.
amazing job
man this video had a whole cast of characters, each character had a very crazy life story. My favorite was the old man with the truck, and the cat selling waters on the corner. That dude's a vet, and now look how the street treating him
That young brother spitting straight facts
Compared to the way in which they live, the 'hood where I grew up is akin to an upper middle class suburb. I lived in projects in Cincinnati Ohio during the '80s and '90s when the crack epidemic was full steam ahead, but over all we didn't have a barrage of murders, robberies or break-ins. I've witnessed and been apart of plenty of fights tho but my overall experience wasn't traumatic. I actually have more goods memories than bad and I have my mom to thank for that, she made sure my siblings and I had access to activities outside the hood.
Every summer was spent alternating between museums, aquariums, zoo, libraries etc. We were exposed to other cultures and experiences beyond the realm of our comfort. Along with other family members they made a concerted effort to expose and impress upon us the realities of life beyond our 5 mile world.
Good documentary
that keeps us safe and helps us evolve. I like your videos because it shows two different worlds, it reminds me of a video I saw on the strip where two guys were fighting and all the people just moved away from them and many of them turned and acted like they didn't even see it. Videos help young kids see that this ghetto life is everything they don't want to be especially when no one else will tell them. Next time do more video on the happy life with so there will be more contrast.
Good peeps live out there
the guy getting a tape in the beginning look like meek mill.
the yng man interview at the end 27:08 spoke some good wisdom, education is a start unity&love for self is the key....mho
My aspiration is to one day be able to afford 500 dollar shoes, even if I starve. I get shot once in a while, but it's all good because I deal shit that pays less than minimum wage. I sometimes go to jail but it's o.k. because I always get out, I's sure time stops while I'm in jail, right... I talk like I have money but really I'm broke as fuck...everything I have is in my right pocket right now... and I can not even feed my kids, whom I'm a perfect example for, I mean I buy them Jordans... Jordans make people happy, right? Besides they mamma get food stamps. The other day I shot at my cousin because that dude wasnt born in my hood... man I liked that dude, but fuck why did he have to grow up in that other block...I started rapping when I was little because everyone I know raps, If wack rapers can make it, I can make it...right. I woke up the other day and I realized I just turned 38 years old...fuck I'm old. I celebrated by smoking weed, with my homies...what's left of them. A few years back I tried to get a real job but they all told me I had no work history so they did not get me.. and others told me they would give me a chance but that I had to pull my pants up and look presentable, and cut my hair...shit I aint cutting my hair. Shit my life has sucked ... now if you don't mind I got to buy me a forty and drink so I can forget about my shitty life...
i live in australia and im polyesian but i've allways wanted to see what it was like to personally visit places like this.. not that its a good or bad thing but im just so intrgued to see what people are like... thanks heaps for getting an inside look of what its like because all ive seen on the internet were the bad things like fights, drugs blah blah and now i can honestly say this place is really cool : )
This is a good doc. If you pay attention to some of the things going on in the background it shows how it is. Around 25:00 I think I see some dude cleaning his grill.
You feel Me was said over 50 times in this video..lol
GamerGee it’s a southern thing
The first barber looks and sounds EXACTLY like my barber!!! And I'm in SOUTHERN AFRICA, Botswana🇧🇼.. AND I have long dreads too🙆♂️ this us unreal😅😂😂
I remember when we used to have able body labor down south ,if I needed a paycheck for the day to help me get by I could do that but Miami is not a city for the people . I feel like they closed down the labor pools to induce the crime rate not reduce it
All that you say is 110% true brother. But you can expect to rec'v a LOT of hostility for making such a comment. Unfortunately many of the people who NEED to hear such a simple message simply do NOT want to hear it ...because it puts the onus of responsibility right back squarely on their shoulders and they would much rather blame someone else. The part about "missing real belief" is also 110% accurate. It is the mindset that hinders far more than any external factors. I say this as a black man.
I grew up in S. Florida ---Lauderdale--there is no "real" industry per se in South Florida. The economy is service based. So during recessionary times the effects are far more pronounced. But you develop a certain consciousness and tuffness when yo from the bottom. But if you got "grill piece" and some personality yo can sell alot of Real estate, insrance, and financial scams.
im in jersey/philly..he was my fav so far!!
that young dood with the headphones is pretty smart for his age
That brother in the red hat is kicking the actual factual
A lot of respect for the man at 13:10. He don't make excuses, he makes it happen.
Damn this video soo real bro!!! I grew up 3 miles from there..My one of my best friends in middle school and high school lived in the beans. He still in prison..I still talk to him once a week.Helping him out the best i can..But its true if he was white he would have got less time for dope..Damm i miss my boi!!
love this ,keep it up black men the youth the future ,i support you all day....
You know where these guys need to work? Wall Street. They hustle, have common street knowledge, probably better than some of the guys who work there, and know how to make money especially something from nothing. And they are tough. It's a shame there isn't an outreach or charity who can train and guide theseGuys. They really have the ability to make it.
Some really interesting people. I like the Coca Cola guy, he's got his head screwed on. Scratching a living in a tough hood, the same the world over.
I've just recently come across this video series I'm glad i did! I've been to Florida several times but most recently I was there for about 2wks and it was absolutely beautiful..But I was curious about the history of Florida I had no idea how racially diverse the city of Miami is and the huge financial divide is! Its incredible how much prosperity there is among the cuban,Latina, Columbian as opposed to the black community! Its like all the other ethnic groups are doing financially well but areas of the black community is suffering! Other ethnic groups just seem to build and grow there own communities!
I love that old man respect ya elders!!!
19:15 "this my bunk, this my bunk here THIS MY BUNK" LMAOOOOO
he too dope wisdom is crazy✊
Real shit!
So damn true
Salute to the young lord spitting knowledge in the beginning of the video, yea just cuz we black and in the hood dont mean that we stupid truth be told we the most educated people we just dont have the same oppurtunities as those eating off the silver spoon
Iam glad for your comment, maybe if I would say it openly I might get a punch in the nose, but it wouldnt be the first one ;) I like u said it as a black man, but to me u said it as a person. There is no black, white, yellow man there is only a person or opposite... we all share common problems and mistakes, this is where we need to relate more and find a compassion. The worst what can happen to us is to let someone alone and not taken care of. People have to care, because there is nobody else..
To quote Jason Black (The Black Authority) "Black people PAY for what they want and BEG for what they need"
REALEST THING I EVER HEARD
My goodness....so true!
Right lol
props to the young homie at 7:25 spitting knowledge
Belief is everything. And not just as a philosophy but as a tool to get rewarded. Many families and parents r rewarding. Everybody wants to be rewarded and kids has to get that. If these guys parents were doing the right thing and put more attention to them maybe they would not end up here. But sometimes even the best parent cannot help. In the end its all about u and in what belief u stand for but parents give u that platform to start so u can choose. Thats all these folks need to get!
BR IN THE CHAIR GETTING LINED UP LOOKS LIKE MEEK MILL
lilbravedave yes!
I like how older folks who lived some life already spoke about past and how things changed in this neighborhood. Particularly gentleman who said everything got worse in 60s when drugs became so often. Another gentleman at 10:00 said exactly what makes this place bad to live: drugs and uneducated young folks carrying guns. This couldnt be better said as these problems r against job opportunities and businesses to start. These folks r truth not those gold teethed punks in the end of the clip.
04.34 that kid spits the most knowledge he is a strong speaker
u cant look out for a little girl if you get caught with drugs from a cop because you ran away tossed some weed an now u gone for a couple months and then the cycle continues
Exactly! Because this problem of so called ghettos is perpetuated and not being really solved there r families doing to kinds what they parents did to them. Those so called gangsters have families and most of them r doing the same mistake their fathers did. No role model no backbone ideology in the family. One father showed in one of these clips is the real hero, saying that his daughter needs to go to school and bring As marks.U can see he wants best for her and he cares. This is what is missing.
need closed captions plz!!!
My apologies I was half asleep or that's the best excuse I can think of at the moment. To be honest, even though I made the "consensus" comment, I reverted back to the notion that more were in prison. However, that aside this stat isn't praise worthy, at best, it's a dubious honor & if trends predict the future the notion will be made reality.
Not to mention, that was '05 stats. I wonder how '12 stats fared in comparison. I imagine, being a slight misanthrope, that the prison #'s increased.
Damn Rev
Ok lol lol
Red hat young man….wow, the intelligence and potential.
LMAO POP SAID HE MADE A NIGGA DO A 100 YARD DASH HE PULLED THAT THANG OUT
Foo back there buffing his golds in that car window tho. LMFAOOO #ICant
i love @ 22:47 ol skool on point he say u aint even have to lock ya door BUT GOD BEEN GOOD TO ME
No doubt im from miami so I know everywhere and everything they talking about it
#FACTS, THAT PART, BLESS UP PRISE YHWH.
Yo..I came on board watching this and I was really skeptical at first but as it went on I started to feel it. I feel you with the few options folk have with low/no employment prospects, rent and bills still due and a family to provide for and knowing that you gotta hit the streets to make your money..just a shame so too much of it is wrapped up in gunplay and violence..that's a real shame. Otherwise good work..giving us another perspective on Miami.
Im liking those gold fronts more and more..lol
that young nigga with the red hat speakin truth
Its pretty sad; how the economy is and how one must live in order to survive.
and why the fuck are there homless in such a rich country like the us... stop spending money on war and help your own people..
Thank you for saying that... How are you going to go clean someone else's home, but your home is filthy and dirty... Clean your shit first.
i love my home
My brother at the end was a bit off the mark. In order for those little girls to have positive men to gravitate towards in maturity there should be little boys raised by real men also. Father is equally important to both genders positive growth. I hear where he's coming from but many young knuckle heads "grabbin them toolz" as he said lack a positive Man in their lives. ..my 2cents worth.
They live in and we’re born into another level of poverty no one can ever really understand those shoes less their walking in them
To further dispel the rumor ...it's actually a comparison of apples to oranges. A fair comparison would be to only compare black males of typical college age (18-24) in college to black males of the same age range in prison. If you do that it is more like 4 to 1. There are FOUR times as many black males in college as in prison.
WHY compare a group of males aged 18-24 (college students) to a group of males aged 16 - 80 (prison inmates) ...unless you have an agenda)
real talk coming from the young brother in the red hat.
