Holuhraun. Deep in the highlands, site of the last major eruption. NOTE: absolutely requires a high-clearance 4x4. Do not attempt in a passenger car; it will not make it. Also, don't set out if you're afraid to drive through unbridged rivers. Do not ignore road closure signs; they're not an inconvenience; if something is closed, the road is literally impassible, and attempting could kill you. If this is too much for you, do a helicopter tour; expensive, but the views are indescribable; it doesn't even feel real.
The highlands is a spectacular place. Visit Askja while you're there :)
