  • Before a deafening crowd of 18,676 fans at Chicago Stadium, the Bulls defeated the Pistons, 94-83, in the opening game of the four-of-seven-game Eastern Conference championship series.
Jordan, whose election as the league's most valuable player will be announced Monday, was held to 22 points, 9 points below his playoff average, on 6-for-15 shooting along with three boards, three steals and six assists.
But Jordan's teammates stepped forward -- the Bulls' bench combined for 30 points and starters Scottie Pippen (18 points), Bill Cartwright (16 points) and Horace Grant (10 rebounds) stood up to Detroit's physical play, holding off the Pistons whenever they threatened to take control.
"I had a bad game, but we still won," Jordan said afterward. "I think that shows the maturity of our team. I think this shows them that we've got a team, instead of a one-man situation."
Today's game set the tone for the remainder of the series. There was very little open-court play, and there were very few scintillating offensive moves. This series will be physical. Bodies will fly. Tempers will flare. Skin will bleed. Character will be tested.
There were times away from the ball when the action resembled a rugby scrum. Players shoved, held and did whatever else they felt they could get away with.
"It's a different style of ball when you play us," said Mark Aguirre, who led the Pistons with 25 points. "They're not going to be able to play us like Philly, where they got a lot of running and dunks for scores."
During the first half, Jordan exchanged angry words with both Mark Aguirre and Dennis Rodman. Jordan's confrontation with Rodman occurred after Rodman fouled Jordan away from the ball, trailing the play.
A major part of the Pistons' game plan is to keep a body on Jordan at all times, bumping him, shoving him, trying to wear him down. But today, Jordan reacted angrily, shoving Rodman, then screaming in his face. Jordan's message was clear. No matter what tactics the Pistons try, he will not be intimidated.
"We cannot let them intimidate us with the little cheap stuff," Jordan said. "We're not going to let that happen. We're not going to take any junk from anybody."
Yet the Pistons made the game competitive, despite the fact they had numerous factors working against them. Detroit ended a grueling six-game series against the Boston Celtics on Friday, whereas the Bulls had not played since Tuesday.
But the sizzling shooting of Aguirre (9-for-16) and Vinnie Johnson (21 points, 10-for-19) brought the Pistons back from a 10-point deficit with 10 minutes left in the third quarter.
Capping a 15-4 run, James Edwards hit a 10-foot jump shot to give the Pistons their first lead of the second half, 54-53, with 4 minutes 57 seconds left in the third quarter.
"We don't make excuses," Johnson said, with typical Piston swagger. "We're champions back-to-back. I'm not saying we're fatigued. I played great. If some guys seemed tired, you should go talk to them."
Tired or not, the Pistons couldn't contain the Bulls once they caught them. Jordan was held scoreless in third quarter, yet Chicago held together well enough to take a 68-65 lead into the final 12 minutes. Then during the first five and a half minutes of the fourth quarter, with Jordan and Pippen on the bench, the Bulls extended their lead to 9 points, 81-72. Detroit never got close than 7 points thereafter.

I mean Jordan would go out to dinner with guys like Barkley right before kicking their ass on the court. He had no problem being your friend and then turning off that friendship and being 100% full competitive mode once on the court. It was the coaches, like Barkley's coach at the time, forbidding him from eating out with Jordan or anyone else they were playing against, saying "no fraternizing with the enemy." So yea, that attitude existed back then, but it seemed more the coaches that wanted to force that type of mentality than all of the players. Sure, some players wanted it that way too, but it seemed like the reason that era was like that (aside from the different rules to the game itself) was the coaches forcing that type of air to the situation.

It was the championship for the Eastern Conference. The years of disapointment and frustration finally come to an end. They went back probably during 1990's offseason and looked at film what they'd have to do to get a series victory against their bitter eastern conference and central division rivals.

What I love most about this game is that even though it wasn’t a strong game overall for Jordan, he started it off so fiercely and boldly, keeping the Pistons so off-balance and on the ropes, that the rest of Bulls were inspired to follow suit. Especially Pippen, who was an absolute gunfighter in the 3rd quarter, and the bench, who definitely weren’t playing scared as they had in the past. My favorite moment is Hodges’ key three-pointer to put the Bulls up by 9 in the 4th quarter. The crowd just goes bananas; there was no doubt from that point on that the Bulls could take anything the Pistons threw at them.

The Bulls finally found a way to get everyone involved with the triangle offense while using Mike strategically instead of wastefully. They grew to be a monster of a defensive team and mentally was no longer afraid of the Pistons. That is why they won; no conspiracy. @boogieloo1831 Před 6 lety +7

zeebuggy - no I'm not splitting hairs and you have no idea what you're talking about. America was an incredibly sophisticated nation in the 90's and ur a fool to think that players back then suffered from some lack of nutrition. This is the most moronic idea ever that comes fron generalizations made by media. The only difference is there is greater cultural concentration on weight training but plenty of athletes in MJ's day lifted. Still, it's not teams pushing this - it's up to individual players during the off season to develop physically and in terms of skills. Go look at players on teams today from top to bottom - sorry but not everybody is built like LBJ. Furthermore, the leagues is littered with 18-20 year olds that are puny and there are too many little guards today - the NBA is smaller than it's been since the 60's.
But this is largely irrelevant. Today's players have the luxury of using athleticism because of the space they have whereas in the past, you could not drive a crowded middle and you could not jump over 7 footers.
What is relevant are the on court conditions and it is simply so much easier to score today. There is a reason why scoring increased dramatically in the '04 - '05 season - rule changes and changes in foul interpretations. This isn't debatable - it's documented even on the NBA website.

Jordan and Pippen really learned and understood both physical and mental strength through these years and filtered out through the team so just like jordan said in his HOF speech I like to thank those bad boy pistons for throwing that long on the fire for them and i'm glad the pistons walked off the way they did there true colors came out and showed just how unprofessional they were with the exception of John Salley and i think James Edwards

I really have learned a lot in reading that book but deep down, she didn't enjoy that dinner. The real issue was the inability of the fragrance to connect with the audience. It was the triangle offense Phil Jackson installed. By preventing the Pistons from easily double teaming Jordan, combined with the league changing the flagrant fouls rules in 1991, Jackson was finally able to get the Bulls over the hump. Doug Collins swung players to one side of the floor to give Jordan space to work with, but the triangle is what gave Jordan the easy out (pass to Pippen or a spot up shooter like Paxon) when double teamed.
If the Pistons had been able to run zone defense like the teams do today (anything but man to man was illegal defense at this time), the Bulls likely wouldn't have made it to the Finals until after Isiah retired. Jordan wouldn't have been able to make it into the lane as easily. See the New York Knicks during the Phil Jackson era if you want to see that proof of concept in action.

Jordan quickly shifted his drive down the court so that he had Bill turned around, yet Laimbeer went up at the right time and still was able to get a body on MJ, preventing the easy bucket. And he did it in clean fashion, which he didn't always do. LOL

The Pistins lost miserably because they could no longer bully their way to victory. The Bulls exposed them and that was why this is the beginning of the end of the Bad Boys.

Detroit NEVER tried to hurt anybody. Look at their reign from 1987-1991, they never ended anybody's career at all nor did they take anybody out. Plus, Detroit could dish it out and take it. The Pistons loved when you threw them down and beat them up, so it's not like they just like being physical without you hitting them hard back--they loved it. Of course they had a different strategy vs. Chicago because they were a different team....
