Hi Mr. Wranglerstar, I am a 14 year old kid who lives off a golf coarse in the suburbs of Illinois. The reason why I say this is because I am not the exact audience that your videos are targeted at, yet I enjoy them more than any other videos on CZcams. My family teases me about watching these videos but i can't help but watch them as soon as you post them. just the other day i was attempting to convince my parents to let me get a set of files to sharpen our shovels telling them "Mr. Wranglarstar says a good shovel is a sharp shovel." Anyways, I learn so much from your videos and i hope you continue to make them. i have been trying to get my siblings to watch them by showing them videos like your bit and brace v.s electric drill. they have yet to budge but i will keep trying.

Keep watching and learn every skill you can use, because it pays off for a lifetime. When I was 14 I studied engines, motorcycles, and machine tools. I later worked industrial maintenance, then enlisted in the Air Force and fixed fighters for 26 years. It was ALL fun, and the insane amount of money you can save may pay off your house early. It worked for me.

Saw this comment 4 years too late, should have joined the Boy Scouts, at 14 you'd be a perfect fit. I got my Eagle in 2012, and I'm sure I'm not the first to tell you that if you want to do bushcraft, hiking, fishing, canoeing, that's a great route to go down on, especially with stingy parents. Plus you learn a lot of life skills along the way. Now that you're 18-19, maybe you could volunteer. When I was in the troop, the most influential person that I ended up giving one of my eagle pins to was one of the adults there, Pat. I don't think he was a Boy Scout when he was young, I think he got into volunteering with the troop with a friend of his whose son was a part of it. He ended up teaching me many things that I use even today. You'd meet many good people there too. If you're still interested in the lifestyle, give it a thought :)

Your fellers axe is very similar to my favorite large single bit axe. Mine is 40+year old True Temper 4 # Michigan style axe, supposedly made from Swedish steel. It has been a wonderful axe. I think I paid about $20 for it in the early 1970’s. It has been through three handles, usually broken splitting big rounds of live oak. I lost it off my tractor and ran over it and put a crack through the eye about 25 years ago. Last year I had a friend MIG weld it for me, so restored it to its original fit and finish. I put a 31 ince does leg hickory handle in and painted it in its original red color. I have used it considerably in the past year, splitting wood, cutting oak roots and it is as good, now, as it ever was.

    Hi Cody
I just purchased a vintage Plumb axe a local fled market near my home in Tennessee
The head is also 28" and the weight is 3.5 lbs. with a curved fawn's foot handle.
I put a razor edge on the blade and am very pleased with this axe. The axe was very well hung when I purchased it with a beautiful color, aged hickory handle.
This axe is the perfect camp axe.
Keep up the great work. I very much enjoy your work.

More detail concerning the uses a falling axe.
Approaching the tree, the axe is used for "swamping out" or clearing obstacles from the escape path usually a 45degree angle from either side of the back cut. The chainsaw can be used for the larger stuff, but most fallers are reluctant to use their chisel chain if there is any chance of nicking a stone.
Second, removing the bark from the back cut. It is impossible to for the wedge to function properly on soft bark.
Third, knocking out the under cut wedge, and cleaning up the corners. At this time you can lay the axe in the undercut and sight along the head for the layout.
The plastic wedge is placed in the back cut as soon as possible to prevent sit back in case a wind gust hits, then wedge the tree over if needed.
Lastly knocking off dead limbs with the poll, and marking log lengths before bucking.
I forgot one of the most important uses for a fallers axe. As you approach the tree, you pinch the end off the handle and let the axe hang straight down, and use it for a plumb bob to check the lean of the tree. Just like using the axe for laying out, you have to know your axe.

    Hi Cody,
Firstly thank you for another great video. I have not seen a single video from you that I have not enjoyed and appreciated. I also have a GB small forest axe, and I have to agree they are a great tool. However recently I have wanted to cut bigger rounds of dead standing wood, and find I want something slightly bigger. so I have ordered a Husqvarna axe, which is the equivalent size to the GB Forest Axe. In Australia it is called Husqvarna Limbing Axe, I believe in the US the same axe is called the Multipurpose axe. Both of these axes sound like a similar size to the axe you review in this video. Have you, or would you, review this axe compared to the Husqvarna or the GB Forest axe? Just wondering. Thanks again for your awesome content.

If I need a fellers axe I grab my 50 year old 4# True Temper Dayton with a 31.5” handle. If I need a longer handle I have a new forged Collins 3.5#, with a 35” handle. I sharpened it, yesterday with my hockey pucks and wet stones. I put a good bevel on it.

So I referbished it and I just went to the hard wear store and bought an axe handle. But my friend was saying that my axe was for wedges. And you could tell that is was a wedging axe bc the back of it was all dented up and the sides of it started to flare out. But my friend was saying that the handle on those axes should have a 19 inch handle. Can you tell me what a good handle length would be. I have have a normal 25 inch handle on it but I want it to look original so is that the right handle what do you thinks.

Don't hit metal if you care about your pull wood is ok cement will chip it don't put your axe in the dirt, you can sand a pull off but it will take weight and material from your axe

How heavy is the head on that axe? The length of the handle was given, but need to know the weight of the head. Thanks

Do you do commissions for axes? Of everyone I've seen, I would trust you the most to do so
