I was inspired to make these simple dowel centers after I watched an excellent video by mirock's woodshop: Brass Dowel Centers Without Lathe (goo.gl/prlVMa)
Доброго здоровья, Михаил! Я уже настолько привык к Вашим няшным полезностям....:) :) что просто не смотря на ролик автоматом ставлю лайк. Спасибо, Михаил!
WOW How simple once shown! You could make them from dowel stock, Thank you for this ingenious trick. I have dowel centers, but this would allow dowels made for almost any drill size... Thanks again, and a very nicely presented video.
Great idea , just getting back into woodworking. Planning on using dowels to strengthen my projects. Now I can make a bunch of these for bigger projects for a fraction of costs over factory made ones.
Excellent idea! Using the smaller plug cutter first without going through the wooden block and then switching to the biggest, would have kept everything centered, I believe... would've been easier also. Will certainly make some of these :)
Yes, obviously. I thought about that after writting it down. Either techniques has its flaws. Mine would be to keep switching plug cutters, yours would be to "correct" the roundness of the dowel center. Still an awesome idea and I will surely make some :D
No, no. Had I done it again, I would have done it your way! It is much easier to change the plug cutters than to waste time for centering the bit and the dowel and then correcting it. I was a bit tired when while making them (wasn't thinking straight) because I attempted to make/film the process of making the dowel centers from brass without using the metal lathe with poor results (wasted like two hours) and then switched straight too my realm,-- wood:))...
Jack, I bought them at woodcraft.com, I think. I couldn't find the brand's name on them. They are some inexpensive HSS Chinese plug and tenon cutters...
Hi man, Nicely made! When drilling the hole for the nails to glue in, was it centered 'enough' for tranferring the dowel positions? In other terms, was your marking and drilling tolerance sufficient for the dowel centers?
Sebastiaan, It will be as perfect as you eye/hand is. To take that variable out of the equations, you can do the following: Keep the wood piece clamped in the same position and only change the drill bits/tenon cutters. Firstly, drill the hole for the nail, then change the drill bit to the "smaller" tenon cutter and cut the plug all the way down (leaving 2-3mm to the bottom of the board). Then, change the tenon cutter to a "larger" one and finish those 2-3mm (it will make that skirt). This way, everything will be perfectly centered. If I did it again, this is how I would have done it now...
Good project. Clearly explained. Thanks for sharing. But: what are that special drill bits you used? I've never seen that kind before? How are they called? Where to buy them? Only imperial measures or also metric? (the latter is much better for me)
Hi Hans. They are called tenon cutters or plug cutters. I bought this set at www.woodcraft.com. There are many brands and designs. This is a cheaper version. Plug cutters are usually shorter and the tenon cutters are longer so they can cut longer tenons, but, of course. you can cut plugs too...

! :) Не могу сказать, что Frank Howarth на меня не повлиял, что доказывает вот этот тайм лапс видос про рубанок на моем русском ютуб канале: czcams.com/video/ypVmedX5krw/video.html
Everything is simple and clear, thank you.
Thank you, Костя:)

Thanks, Jorge! It works...:)
Brilliant! Very good video quality, editing, and clear narration as well.
Thank you Brian! :)

Excelente video. Estoy pensando en la manera de hacer algunos. Me gustó el método que usaste. Gracias por compartir y un saludo cordial.
Thank you, Lazaro! :)
COOL !
Amazing . Great stuff
Great idea and implementation!
Thanks you!:)
Clever idea. I need to try that.
:)) Piece of cake...
Today is the dowel centers day! It is a challenge!) Great idea and implementation!
Thanks, Vlad! You and your challenges...!!:)))
Thanks for sharing
Very clever!
Thanks, Stephan!
Excellent idea!

Will certainly make some of these :)
Yes, you have an excellent point, Eric!
Only thing you would have to keep switching the tenon cutters which is still easier.

hola muy buen video como se llaman esas mechas?
for a flange use small hole fender washers.

Ah Thans man, this seems like net way to do it!
Yes, I wish I has come up with it in the first place.(
great hack ,,,
I wonder if you could simply drill & nail a thin, flat piece of wood (from a bigger dowel?) onto half a dowel... Gonna try.
You could! :) Please do, and send the link to mirock's woodshop then (if you make a video, he has started the challenge on this topic:))
very good
Thanks
