Good point. Kevin P is a has been. Australia have played their form of test cricket with grit and determination without the nastiness. Cummins has led from the front. Leadership at its best showing the way with the captaincy, bat and ball. A proud Aussie fan.

Only if it’s played in the right spirit. No declaration on day one could have changed the whole complexion of the match
England can't afford to produce flat pitches. They are only batting for around 130 overs per match, the Aussies will bat for around 200 per match. That is a massive difference in terms of bowler workload, and England's bowlers are way older. I think that could be telling.
However, if England produce pitches with a bit in them and try playing Bazball they will get skittled!
Spot on. Broad, Robinson and Anderson bowled 132 overs in this game compared to only 83 from Boland, Cummins and Hazelwood. Have to wonder what the bowling load differential caused by the Bazball approach will be in the later Tests. England scored at 4.61rpo per over across the match, considerably higher than Australia’s 3.20rpo. The greatest difference since 1904 for an Ashes Test.

Agree. It's all very well scoring 400 at 6 an over but the recovery time is the same as them being bowled out for 120 at 2 an over.
That was such a gutsy declaration by Ben Stokes. That let the Aussie back in the game and almost negated the draw. If he hadn't declared early, since Root and Robinson had momentum they could have added another 40+ runs and an hour out of the game and it would be mentally tough for Aussie batters in the first inning. As an Aussie fan, I look forward to more such gutsy , entertaining declarations from England over the next 4 tests. 😆

"Bazball" tactics allowed Usman the time to play the long game (even with all the rain they had), he knew we only needed a couple of runs per over to get it done, played conservatively and took it right to near the last hour where the pressure dials up and England are under the most pressure and inevitably make mistakes. Usman goes harder earlier and loses his wicket we might have been closer to the total sooner but without the time pressure back on the Poms, they would have cleaned us up!
I love this idea that the Aussie plan all along was to hope that Cummins would play a special knock in the last hour of the last day 😂
Bazball may not work against this Aussie side but it certainly surprised them. Australia are a better side man for man and I honestly believe that England are giving themselves the best chance to win this series playing like this - it may not work but it’s better than being rolled over all the time.

Disappointing of course, but wow so much respect for pat cummins bowled and batted like a true captain 👏🏼 i have to say we lost the test due to the drops and missed opportunities from Bairstow. Simple as that. Foakes has got to come in, idc how.
I think you drop Moeen Ali for Ben Foakes and use root as the spinner then include Bairstow as the specialist at bat. Then I’d drop Anderson for wood, cos we also missed the extra pace today.

We won with Smith and Marnus doing nothing the whole game. If just ONE of them wakes up, let alone both, to be their true self for the rest of the series, England are in massive trouble. England probably lost their best chance at getting a win and possibly setting themselves up to win the series.

It showed that the Aussies aren’t a one or two man band, reliant on those two to get the bulk of the runs, as good as their records have been in the recent past. Khawaja, Head, Green, Carey, Cummins all stuck their hand up and contributed in either or both innings. Warner showed signs of some form in the second innings which may give him confidence for the rest of the series.
They had Australia 8 down for 225 they had plenty of runs. England's lack of bowling really showed and it will be the reason Australia win the series. Bazz ball won't beat this Australian team their bowlers are too good for that

Nah this was a dodgy declaration even while not considering the end result. There were too many variables that not were in control to decide that a sub 400 1st innings score is good enough on a flat batting pitch.

As an England fan, I am not really that mad. In comparison to how I felt when I stayed up all night watching Australia hammer us in the recent Ashes down under, this is actually one of the best ways to actually lose, if we had to.
The thing with ‘Bazball’, it gives us the best chance of winning but also paradoxically increases our chances of losing.
Watching Cricwiz, on Sky, changing odds constantly made me think that it could have been easily played out so that the Aussies only had like 5% of winning hypothetically if we batted “more sensibly”. But I also guarantee that our odds of winning would also decrease to around 20 to 30% of winning (40% max) - the reason being that bowling out a side on this pitch would always be difficult. As a result the draw would have taken up the majority of the odds. So whilst, this would mean that we would only have had a 5% chance of losing, we would actually have less chance of winning.
Therefore, I am actually alright with the result, because whilst I hate losing, I love winning more, meaning that I would feel much more satisfied going for a win than just making sure I don’t lose. And I get the feeling that this is what this England side wants to do and I am all here for it.
What are your thoughts on this?????
Yup, I like the Bazball approach of get a result, even if it's not the one you want. Nothing worse than a team batting for two full days in their first innings and almost guaranteeing a draw. Looking back, I'd have preferred a score of 450 in our first innings rather than the early declaration. That was a ballsy move and it ultimately cost us the win. But it also may have made the draw more likely had they gone down that road.

I absolutely agree, and as the last year has shown, we lose infrequently and have been tough to beat even when we play higher risk cricket. Ask any England fan when we had Aussies needing 60 odd with 3 wickets in hand whether Bazball is good and all would answer yes, but as you said that paradoxically increases chance of a loss. I like this brand of cricket a lot, Stokes took a draw out of the game and went full throttle for the win. Why wouldn’t you? This time it didn’t come off but I really look forwards to the next test

3 respected pundits/commentators (particularly Kumar) refusing to discuss in depth the wicket keeping problems have me astounded.....Eoin is right by saying both Bairstow and Foakes should play.....What's never mentioned is the fact that they both played during Bairstow's golden summer with Jonny showing what a great slip fielder he is.......The elephant in the room is Brooks' amazing start to his test career......I do believe Australia would be ruthless, presented with such a selection quandary.
England must be worried going into the next test. Both Marnus and Steve the number 1 and 2 ranked test batters failed to score runs and Australia still won the match. Imagine what would happen if they start scoring runs.
lot of people talking about the declaration but i think it is more down to the chances that england let off in the australian first innings batting without which england would have a much bigger first innings lead
I think England needs to bring a specialist Wicket keeper (Foakes) and a spinner. Well done Australia, bravo Pat, bravo Khawaja. You deserve to win

I think if the pitches are going to be flat and the overhead conditions are clear, then Eng attack might struggle. I feel this test finally exposed the fact that Broad and Anderson are getting older and can't really shoulder the weight of that much bowling. Anderson made next to no impact in this test. While Broad was superb, Stokes mentioned in the presentation that he was completely spent by the end. Flat pitches will only lead to more bowling for these guys. Plus, Anderson, Broad, and Robinson leads to too much sameness. With Moeen Ali injured and Stokes clearly unable to bowl long spells, they will need to freshen up the attack a bit. I don't think they have a good enough spinner to replace Ali, so I would just go all in with pace. I think Wood is a must, just to have a point of difference. I think they can stick with the other three for now, but Woakes will lengthen their batting if they choose to have him. For Aus, apart from the form of Labuschagne, they don't have much to be concerned about. If the pitches are flat, then I think Starc over Boland would be a wise choice. Both will go for runs in such conditions, but Starc creates a point of difference with the angle and has more pace, plus adds some more batting.
And England made a few run donating blunders in the field, dropped catches and didn't take the new ball which all adds to their loss. But Boland and Lyon also made valuable contributions with the bat.
We need to remember, test cricket is on the verge of extinction in many places. I applaud England for playing the way they do! It was a great test match, congrats to Australia for having the character to pull through. Long live Baz ball lol

Bazzball wont work consistently against dogged and determined teams like australia as they will keep hanging on and wait for the right opening... England are just batting 150 overs a test and on decks that dont offer much assistance to suit their style.. the problem with that approach is that gives 300 overs for the opposition to get the same score batting at half the rate.. this further will get highlighted when their bowlers start tiring as the series moves on.. if they play an additional bowler then their batting may have to just take it a bit slow..so its going to be very intresting to see how it pans out as the series unfolds.... Those who say the declaration was right..jiust remember they bowled 4-5 overs.. without giving the ball to Jimmy.. and with thr way root was batting at that point.. he would have easily got another 40 runs during that period..and that would have compensated for the time it took for stokes and bairstow to get going on day 4...so they would have probably had 20 runs more and another 2-3 overs to have a crack at Australia.. the conditions also weren't overcast.. bazball should be cricket backed by some logic and not just trying to show ur different ot u want to win..
Declaring on 393 with Root hitting boundaries for fun was going to be acceptable if and only if England would have had a realistic chance of picking up at least 2 wickets of Australia by the end of Day 1 which could have been possible either if the pitch had assistance for pacers or if they could bowl at least 10 overs whereas they could bowl only 4 overs and realistically 1 wicket of Warner or Khawaja at that time looked like was not gonna make a huge difference as Australia has 7 to 8 top batsmen.
Bazball: For when you dont have a Test cricket side but try anyway. Points for turning up though 👍
Disagree, I think they should expand on Bazball. At the drinks break their butler should come out with a tray of Mai Tais', might help them hold on to those catches. Worth a try.
First innings declaration wasn’t a wise move. And I don’t say this because England lost.

Aus got hammered on day 1 and the deceleration let them back in the test match. Just like asking NZ to follow in in the winter was the only thing that allowed them back into that test. Bazball is costing us test matches fact.
@@yeggydegz4330 By declaring they got the Australians in to bat after a long day in the field and given Warner's lack of form there was a chance they could have gotten a wicket. They knew that Australia would bat slower and take longer to get runs.
If they had continued into the morning session and lasted till lunch that reduced the likelihood having sufficient time to get Australians out particularly given chance of rain in England. With the Australian batters appearing in form after WTC there was a perception that doing this gave them chance for a win or to bat out for a draw. Where as declaring increased the likelihood of a result.
England didn't loose because they declared they lost because their fielding and no-balls were not good enough. If they had focused on these two things they would likely have gotten Khwaja out and Australia would likely have collapsed. Plus Moen Ali couldn't bowl in second innings.
The Australians would not have declared but Australia is not playing Bazball and is happy to have draws.
Great game, you could say that England had the chances to win it, and should have done so. But taking nothing away from the Aussies for hanging on in there and getting over the line.
Looking back, pivotal moments were maybe a slightly early first innings declaration? Losing those two quick wickets after the short rain delay at the start of innings two? Bairstow a little flaky behind the stumps? A couple of catches not sticking (Root & Stokes) during the last session and maybe an over too far for Root when the new ball could have been taken? Pity we couldn't have finished off the Aussie tail like we did in their first innings, that was ruthless.
England definitely need to polish those chances off, you get punished for not converting them.
I hope the English summer does us proud and we don't lose time to weather in the next four tests, it promises to be a classic Ashes series.

@@KonohasOrangeFlash Totally agree, but on that topic we only really had one batter produce the goods in a big way too, so it's a two way street. Your first few batters can't all score "Daddy Hundreds" in one innings (well they can, but the game would be a draw straight away) so I appreciate your point, but it isn't really valid.
I am ok with Bazball but only as far as run rate goes (5+). Not onboard with early declarations. If Eng got 10 overs to bowl on day 1, I would understand early declaration, but not for just 4 overs when only 2 wickets are left and Root is smashing it. Those extra 20-30 runs could've made the difference. I was neutral when the game started but really wanted England to lose after the 1st innings declaration.
Though Im an Australian and I think England is unlikely to emerge victorious in this Ashes series, I believe this English team will leave a significant imprint on the way test cricket is played in the coming years. The influence of Bazball and T20 cricket is likely to nurture the development of more aggressive playing style over the next decade and consequently alter the dynamics of all cricket formats. In my view, test cricket will inevitably adopt a more aggressive approach, resulting in a more captivating and appealing viewing experience. Bazball will be looked on as an key evolution point of the game.
The only criticism of Cummins is after tea on the first day he started to bend his back and increase his pace something needed from the start . As far as Baz Ball goes , any team with a bowler that bowls 150 km plus and a great spinner will make it look foolish

I was impressed with Ben Stokes Captaincy through out the game, except for the "MOST COSTLY DECLARATION", which is going to Haunt England team for long, unless they win the series. England's bowling is i think below par because they don't have bowler who can bowl 140-145+.They have wood but they are not using him and they donot have a proper spinner. I think bowling will be the key in this series going forward

working for the broadcaster...seems like the whole commentary team got dissapointed as australia had fields all around which minimised boundaries and forced the batsmen lose their wicket playing bad strokes
When stoksey took the new ball, I think the bowlers didn't execute the plan as they did when they had old ball. They had leg side field and aiming for hitting bouncers. Even stokes almost took a blunder with that plan but the moment new ball was taken, bowlers kinda deviated away from the plan and did a lot of full length deliveries and went for runs. Maybe they were hoping that the ball would move around if they go for full length. Also, not trusting Jimmy at such a crucial occasion, not even for an over, wasnt ideal for me, specially when they had new ball.
Reminded me of India's win at the Gabba. Superb cricket from both teams. Bravo. I have no nails left.

I don't think the style of England's approach is questionable. Positive cricket has made an average team better.

For a start as has been the case, we went into the test with only 3 strike bowlers, two of those recovering from injury. We have a spinner & then it's a few odd overs from one or two other players.
The old saying, "you can't win a test match on the first day but you can loose it"?
Declaring was stupidity, i know there's often good reason for putting in the opposition at the end of a day, there was so little in the wicket that favoured putting them in.
If our tail enders were scoring freely, how were we going to create pressure on their openers.?
In conclusion, the 20 or 30 runs or even possibly 50 odd runs we turned down would have improved our chances on the last day.
Same with one more front line pace bowler, he might have curtailed there score by 20 or 30 runs, or taken one or two more wickets, it's the fine margins that matter, I like our aggressive approach but we still need to be a bit clever in the decision making.
When I saw our bowling attract on day one, I put my money on Australia.

England needs to bring in Mark Wood for next test as all others bowl at similar pace and lack variety
They defeated india last year and lots of other teams since last year with the same bowling attack...so no excuses..give credit to Australia..they r just different from other teams..
Robinson is just a dribbly medium pacer……..Wood would be more effective against Australia especially if they keep preparing flat wickets.
Meh, if he doesn't declare then their probably playing for a draw. I think you can question his tactics/field positions, but ultimately if the Poms took their chances and had a better keeper they would have won, the end.
When are we going to talk about Warner and his place in the team?
England needs fix the following:
1. Drop james anderson and bring mark wood
2. Drop Duckett and bring any batsman
3. Take aggressive, but wise decisions. Declaring on day 1 at 393 with Joe root batting so well, was foolish not brave
4. If moeen ali isnt fit, replace with woakes

The early declaration didn’t cost England this test Match but the catching and the extras in Australia’s first innings did.
The missed stumping on Green and the khawaja no ball off Broad cost them over 50 runs which would of put the Aussie win out of the equation.
They got the Aussie big 3 out relatively cheaply and still lost. You’d fancy one of smith,Marnus or head to go big in the upcoming tests.
I think England will rue this missed chance and I fancy Australia to go onto to win the series 3-1. I hope I’m wrong .
I completely agree the issue isn't Bazball but its not letting Bazball distract from doing all the little things well. A few less no balls and better catching by England could have seen them win on the 4th day.
Why is taking a wicket off a no ball considered a missed chance? Overstepping gives the bowler a clear advantage. The pace is higher, the length is different. There's no guarantee that the same delivery would have gotten a wicket if the bowler hadn't overstepped. It shouldn't be classed in the same category as a dropped catch, which is a clear missed chance.
@@rahulsrinivas3224fair point but broad barely overstepped and I doubt he got any advantage from it. It seemed abit of tired shot from khawaja and he regrouped after that. It seemed to knock the stuffing out of England on that 2nd evening .
Taking the no ball out of the equation england still left out alot of runs on the table through execution on the batting side of things and on the fielding side .
Australia 🇦🇺 will make one change for the second test starc for boland and England at least 3 changes for Ali,bairstow and Anderson or Robinson

Yes, the Verdict was a must watch especially if England had a poor day or match. He didn’t hold back. Can imagine what he’d be saying about the declaration, Crawley, Bairstow’s missed chances and a few other things.

Cant blame stokes or bazball style of play for england's loss. great game, both team made mistakes but aussies made one less mistake and they won. both team also played great cricket, and again aussies played 1 moment better and they won. there is no need to go hard on england and criticise their decision making. Think we just need to enjoy the hard cricket both teams have played and hope they continue to play in their own ways and enjoy the series.

If they keep producing flat pitches, I don't see this current bowling lineup of England taking 20 wickets of Australia. Australia will bat 200+ overs every test unless its absolutely green wicket.

Problem is they struggle to put a fit fast bowler on the park often enough and no one stands out in the spinning dept. Wood looks like the only current pace option, if fit. After a promising winter, the selectors probably think it’s a bit early for Rehan Ahmed. Not exactly ripping through 2nd div batting line ups for Leics with 6 wkts in 7 matches at 67.

Does anyone know what axe to grind Kumar Sangakkara has with the Australians? His commentary was incredibly biased over the entire 5 days of the contest. This is a continuation from the 2019 Ashes series. The English commentators showed passionate support for their team but none of the bias that Sangakkara exhibited. The commentary of a great and historic match was poorer for his performance...

Kumar and Morgan's analysis skills may require some time for improvement, as they were both on the wrong side this time. The abundance of buzz ball noise was entertaining but hindered their chances of winning the test.

England could've batted more than 400 easily. That was a big mistake and should've used James Anderson in the last 15 overs.who is the most experienced bowler and expert of new ball particularly.and bew ball taken lately too.the result would've changed otherwise. bad captaincy.
Its a funny old game is cricket int it. Stokes has gone from single handedly winning England an ashes test in 2019, to single handedly losing one four years later. Captaincy decisions and allowing the batters to have zero responsibility. It doesnt have to be all in or nothing. One can play bazball while still putting value on their wicket. What a shame. What a wasted opportunity. If u dont win the tests when marnus and smith fail twice youll never win one when they come good. One can take losing ashes tests when not good enough, but throwing the ones away when youve been the better side is criminal!
