Scoliosis affects women more often than men, and the question of scoliosis and how it impacts pregnancy is frequently asked.
Women can become pregnant with scoliosis. Scoliosis does not impact fertility, and it does not affect reproductive organs. However, there can be additional back pain in some cases, especially those with a more severe curve. The lower the scoliosis is, the more likely it will be to cause pain as well.
Some patients become pregnant with scoliosis and are as normal as any other child-barring patient that doesn't have scoliosis, experiencing any pain or discomfort.
It was thought that pregnant women with scoliosis needed to get a C-Section because they could not bear natural labor. We now know this is not true; scoliosis affects the spine, not the pelvis.
Some patients might have a slight torque in the pelvis when their scoliosis is low in the spine, but they can still bear children and give birth naturally.
A known complication for pregnant patients with scoliosis is the epidural. Since it is administered directly on the lumbar spine, patients might encounter inconveniences like:
-- The anesthesiologist not applying the anesthesia correctly
-- The anesthesiologist missing the spine and repeating until done correctly
-- Not getting the desired effect
-- Additional anesthesia derived complications
Bringing some X-rays and providing them to the anesthesiologist will reduce the possibility of future anesthesia-related complications.
Pregnant scoliosis patients are often worried that weight gain will cause a negative progression of their scoliosis during pregnancy, but in fact, it does not.
After birth, however, some do not experience a progression of their curve at all, but some do. The reason behind that is unknown, but we do know that post-menopausal women with scoliosis who have given birth do see a progression in their scoliosis more often than not.
There is a genetic component to scoliosis but there is no known scoliosis "gene" per se. It's more an epigenetic factor, where the mother will pass down her genes, but it is unknown if the child will have scoliosis.
Scoliosis patients that have given birth should be vigilant with their children due to the existing genetic relationship between mother and child and perform regular examinations in the future.

So many people in my family have scoliosis. My sister, brother, his daughter, and me. Mine was just so bad I had to get spinal fusion when I was 9. They said if I was 16, I would be walking sideways. They tried the back brace, but it was getting worse quickly, so we had no choice. I was the youngest spinal fusion patient my surgeon worked on. I was born with congenital scoliosis, my shoulder blade stuck out like terrible anyway I don’t know how to explain it back they called me the hunchback of Notre Dame kids can be really cruel.
I was born in 1954 and there was not much really known about it my grandmother took me to Cleveland chiropractic clinic in the state of Missouri, it was only like five dollars a treatment people learning to be chiropractors so basically I was a guinea pig there were times when I left there and I couldn’t even stand up they caused any more trouble than good and that went on for three years I still remember the smell of that paper.
I got married at a young age and had my first child in 1973 I was 19 years old, she was four weeks early, they explain to me that I should’ve got an abortion they don’t understand why my doctor didn’t explain the dangers.
People that I knew were trying to get me to get one I believe that Roe versus Wade was passed in 1972 the year I graduated high school anyway I couldn’t be a cheerleader I can take gym at all and I love swimming I was the first lifeguard I did pass my cheerleading and tell the nurse checked my spine so I didn’t feel limited that they limited me.
I never understood where all my pain is coming from
I had to walk everywhere my mother did not know how to drive so I walked a lot and every time I did my last side my rib cage would hurt so bad and I remember that in my pregnancy too!
There was no way I was gonna give the gift the Lord gave me away or have an abortion, they did want to give me a C-section but I wanted to have all my children natural childbirth and I did it was really very bad pain in my back especially my lower back where I was having that lower back labor pains anyway but they couldn’t give me an epidural which I didn’t want any chemicals in my body anyway, my spine was so deformed it was in the shape of an S and even my neck had a C curve in it I now have spinal stenosis bone spurs degenerating Yes disease I went on to have two more children my oldest daughter turns 49 in October, my middle daughter is 45 years old I had her early also and she had yellow jaundice. They thought I had gestational diabetes but I didn’t, I’m telling you the doctors had me so scared because I was going to a neighborhood clinic and I never seen the same doctor ever I think the Lord for helping me through all this my youngest is my son he is turning 34 this year I might have a little mixed up I am still very well let’s say I’m still having trouble recovering from the virus I’m on oxygen and a walker they didn’t really expect me to make it I’m kind of one of those people that when you tell me I can’t do something I’m at work my best to do it I believe all things are possible. My son was born in 1988 so I believe I was 34 when I got pregnant but 35 when I had them so there was a whole slew of other problems they were talking about down syndrome and then possibly me not making it or becoming paralyzed because I already have trouble with circulation in my legs and nerve problems, I just do not have good insurance so I have to do my own research that’s why I am on here right now I can’t even explain the amount of pain I’m in but my doctor doesn’t think that when you have scoliosis it causes pain it’s obvious to me he doesn’t keep up with the newest science, I think with physical therapy maybe some acupuncture and massage therapy physical therapy to I would be able to be a productive adult again I don’t know who to reach out to for help, I didn’t qualify for SSA only SSI disability because I was a wife and work at my husband‘s business and he didn’t pay in taxes for me so when he left I wouldn’t realize that I actually didn’t have enough hours or days or whatever it takes to get Medicare so I’m on Missouri Medicaid there’s a lot of things that it doesn’t cover I’m trying the natural way trying to stay as helpful and possible as I can I believe someday I’m going to surprise a lot of people I told my doctor I was going to be his greatest success story, he actually asked me for advice on supplements in what I do I tell you this makes me really tired and I’ve been stuck in this apartment now 4 1/2 years because what the Covid virus did to me I had never had to spend the night in a hospital in my entire life even when I had my children there I left I didn’t stay for the three days that they allowed at that time I was ready to go home. You know I had to learn how to be very humble and if there’s any help out there for me I am 68 years old now but I don’t feel a day over 30 years old I have a very positive outlook on life and my plan is the weather to be at least 120 and to be healthy wealthy and wise and by wealthy I didn’t mean money because there’s so many people like me out there that need help and I am a very good steward with my money I have big plans for my second half of my life I am right in the middle now I’m a walking talking breathing miracle, I haven’t even told you about all the times that I got rear ended when I was driving. And when I was with other people I’ve never had a ticket in my life and it wasn’t my fault but I did get whiplash for real I did and I didn’t see you anybody though it’s too much trouble they didn’t pay my doctor bills though I was fine with that. Now I am just searching and trying to find some type of help because I believe if I can strengthen my ligaments in my muscles and get stronger build my muscle back from being sick for so long so I wasn’t able to do my yoga any longer and I can’t balance myself now my pelvic area is one side is up about 6 inches higher than the other but I know with exercising physical therapy water aerobics that I could become a productive woman in society, people seem to think that I haven’t made them being on SSI I would rather be healthy and out working, nobody wants to change places by me though I don’t want anybody to feel sorry for me there’s no reason to anyway I probably made this too long I hope it excepts it I get a lot of 400 messages from Google I think that means my message or comment was too long God bless everyone and never give up in this moment right now if you’re still breathing in and alive you have a chance to be totally healed of whatever is wrong with you sincerely LaDonnaBella

I am currently 38 weeks pregnant and have been experiencing quite a bit of pain which I think is due to my scoliosis which includes an extensive corrective fusion; sciatica in particular has been a struggle, however I feel confident that my scoliosis shouldn't cause any issues during childbirth.
I do think this video should probably distinguish between different types of scoliosis (idiopathic vs congenital etc), because I feel that is a factor when it comes to genetic hereditary. Almost all of my family members on my mother's side have some degree of scoliosis (including men!), and three of us have had it severe enough to require corrective surgery in the decades since that has been an option - for all of us it was 'idiopathic' and emerged during puberty.

Thank you very much, I am pregnant in my 12th trimester (first time pregnant 🤰) I am experiencing some pain in my lower back, lower spine pain, gluts (like nerve pain) and the sides of my hips particularly rt side. Idk if the reason I’m having this pain this early due to scoliosis or just pregnancy :(.
I have an apt with my ob this week, hopefully would help, I’m doing starches and yoga to help relief the pain hopefully, I’m just worried because I’m literally in the end of my trimester 😩😩

I have a very slight curve but during my first 2 labors I noticed after my epidural my left side was affected more than my right and I still had some sensation/pain. I got an xray after the second and there’s a slight curvature but not diagnosed as scoliosis.

Anyone having transverse baby position because of scoliosis? My doctor told me it is related but just need real opinion and experience 🙄
I have lumbar scoliosis since I was a kid. I will go for a C section but what terrifies me is the epidural done for this surgery. I am scared to death they are not going to puncture in the right place because of my scoliosis. In the UK they do C section with epidural only.

I don’t think scoliosis is hereditary.
Genetic studies to date have not yielded much evidence that this condition can be inherited. Although congenital scoliosis is often discovered during the infant or toddler period, in some children it does not diagnosed until their adolescent years.
Can the relaxin hormone be used to straighten the scoliosis though ? 🥺

Since I was born with congenital scoliosis and I am now 68 years old and three children later I can tell you for sure it’s not hereditary no one ever in my family has scoliosis and I don’t know if they done research on this but I came to the conclusion it’s caused from malnutrition and also the condition of the mother and the father which now they know can contribute to people born with deformities and a lot of things well my mother and father both were alcoholics and my mother was pregnant when she went in labor with me also I know they were addicted to heroin so I was addicted to alcohol and heroin I had alcohol fetal syndrome I believe that’s what they call it, and I am thoroughly convinced that even what my father did affected me how I have two younger sisters and neither one of them have anything wrong with him or my older brother except for what they brought onto their self by their lifestyle but they gave me a cute nickname ha ha ha hunchback of Notre Dame yeah my own sisters and my brother they were very cruel to me but I know they were jealous of me because even though I had this big hump on my back and my ribs on my left side stuck out I was the brightest in the family I got a full scholarship to college I was excepted in the upward bound program where they paid me to go to college in 11th and 12th grade we lived on campus and we got our meals free it was a very fun time for me and all my credits would’ve went towards college if I attended there with a full scholarship, I love my siblings I really do but I don’t like them because not too long ago my sister and her husband came here they really can’t see my daughter but they want to stop by and see me because I had got really depressed and I maxed out a lot of credit cards on QVC in which I am still paying for my mistake I told him to close my account even know if I beg don’t give it back to me I still have a excellent credit because I’m still paying my bills on my little SSI check but I’m doing it, the reason for me saying this is how God I thought I was gonna die of a broken heart I feel this way sticks and stones may break my bones but words could break my heart and that could kill me!!!!!! And that is true I started to have heart problems when my sister stole I had bought a brand-new $2000 rose gold computer it was a gaming computer I wanted to start a CZcams channel so I was buying stuff to start my CZcams channel about health and my story that I might be able to help somebody anyway my computer was still in the box they manage to take that to printers one only cost about $100 but the other one was more for like an office and I missing my portable vacuum cleaner Dyson all kinds of stuff there’s no sense in me trying to remember all of the stuff but needless to say I still owe on three credit cards and I had told my daughter about it when they came to see me I was on and still am on like 16 different medication‘s and I really didn’t want to see anybody because I told them about my eyesight and that I had just taken a pain pill and I was so tired but they just stayed here anyway I told him I really wanted to go to sleep but they stayed here anyway I know they seen all them and open boxes in my front room and I couldn’t see in there I could barely make out their faces I don’t know why surprise my two sisters used to rob disabled ladies other Social Security check after they cashed it this is when they were teenagers they were always in trouble I just couldn’t believe that they could do that but I don’t know why it was so hard for me to except they did it to me because they really show me they didn’t care about me, and then my oldest daughter lives in New York I told her when she asked me if I had all my stuff for my CZcams channel because she wants to help me with that but she does live in New York and I don’t hate Missouri I told her I didn’t have a computer no more and she asked me what happened and I said well BRENDA has it she was in Iowa and she said you didn’t give her that did you and I said no and she knew my situation she goes why did they come to your apartment anyway, and I said I think Michelle told him about all this QVC stuff and they had a plan my brother-in-law was standing at the front door of my apartment and when I was in the bathroom it takes me a long time because of my disabilities I kept her hearing my front door and steps and I have to really get in my room fast and lie down anyway the next day I kind a looked at everything that I didn’t have they really clean me out they left me a few things they also took a Keurig coffee pot in a band coffee pot all brand new I can’t even remember all the stuff they took but I know I owe a lot of money and when my daughter emailed them and told BRENDA that she was ashamed of her for taking advantage of me because BRENDA is my daughters got godmother and that’s my sister that took my stuff she tell CHRISTINA your mom gave it to me and it belongs to me well CHRISTINA says you know my mom is on medication and she can’t see and you know she would never do something like that to you well my sister calls me and starts cussing me out telling me that I gave her all that which I know there’s no way I would’ve did it oh and that much money still on it I am perfectly saying you know they act like this because things of happened to me that I don’t have any sense at all but I do anyway she had the nerve to tell me I’ll send it back to you but I’ve had the stuff now for six months and I’m gonna charge you for storage and interest where are you can imagine what that did to me so I think I’m over it I’m going to pay my bills and who knows I think I will get payback from my heavenly father 100 times more than what they stole for me, the ironic part of the whole thing is both of my sisters are so cruel and my brother, they colors out born again Christians if I didn’t know them I probably wouldn’t think it was laughable but I do know oh they said a prayer and I think that’s going to get him into heaven, OK I better stop this I’m trying to quit doing this but it’s really hard it’s hard to be all by yourself 20 477 days a week but right now my whole arm and hand is falling asleep from holding this phone and I’m about to drop it if I don’t stop I sincerely yours LaDonnaBella and just keep believing that all things are possible it’ll keep you going if you wake up and you were here at this very moment you have all the chance in the world to be all you want to be and I have big plans for myself so hang in there sincerely LaDonnaBella
