London Single Decker Bus. Restoration of Dinky Toys model no. 283.

- The Dinky Toys model from 1974 was very complicated in terms of housing. The company made it in an unusual scale of 1:64. It had a manual mechanism for opening the door inwards, located under the roof. The previous owner painted the interior of the model with paint and this caused additional work for me, because removing it and returning it to the original blue plastic was not easy at all. I also managed to return to the original stickers that were mounted on these London buses. As usual, at the end of the video I made the box in which this model was sold. Another excellent restoration. I really like model buses because I've had some since I was a child but unfortunately my mother gave them away. Now here in Brazil they are making perfect replicas of the old Brazilian models that I am buying via China. When I went to London 9 years ago I bought some Corgis at Hamleys. This model was also available as a Dinky kit, so it may well have been painted by hand from the beginning, and the glass inserted whilst still wet... I remember doing one as a kid. The doors were VERY difficult to seat: you did well getting them in only 15 minutes! Nice result! Looks terrific.

Nací en 1958, estos eran unos de los juguetes que todos deseábamos cuando era un niño. En mi país eran caros, y pocos chicos los tenían, así que eran objeto de envidia. En verdad, hubiesen durado poco en nuestras manos, pero nos fascinaban esos modelos y los más grandes, más todavía, puesto que eran más escasos y costosos. Viéndolo desde mi edad actual, pienso que este modelo resistió muchas manos, algunas restauraciones y llegó en buen estado en que estaba al inicio de la renovación, sobre todo los mecanismos de las puertas y campana. Alguien lo quiso, al menos a su modo.
El trabajo, como siempre, fue cuidadoso y muy prolijo, y el modelo recuperó su belleza inicial y volvió a ser testimonio de una época. Felicitaciones, y gracias por haber podido revivir esos sentimientos de un niño hace más de 50 años atrás.

Another fabulous restoration, Paul. Like yourself and many others have found when reassembling the doors are a problem, but there is a very simple trick to the doors. I came across it by pure luck. I have 7 or 8 of them to do. I recently received the reproduction doors I was missing. From cliffords. I hope to do my fleet later in 2024. I have window units to make as well as window units and the interior seating. So I've got my work cut out for me. It is one of my favourite models. Cheers Michael

@@TheMasterNo6 I can imagine it might involve adhesive tape. Place the doors in their roof holes, fix them temporarily in place with adhesive tape on the outside, this will make them far more stable while aligning the baseplate..

Youre right, the doors are very difficult to seat properly. I took one apart to my regret and never cpuld get all the doors back in properly. I ended up selling it years ago. I have 2 others which were very nicely custom painted in different local liveries with advertising details I bought a long time ago that I decided to keep as is. I wonder how the women in the Binns Road Meccano Dinky Factory managed to seat all the doors in these as they would have been working very fast. Its a lovely old model though.
It seems to me that these women definitely deserved an award for their dexterity during assembly, their advantage was certainly smaller fingers that made it easier to set up these small elements

Yet another fantastic restoration. The only thing I would do different is to paint the windscreen wipers black instead of of leaving them clear. I love the playability of the doors and bell.

Nach solch einer exzellenten Restaurierung kann der Londoner Einzeldeckerbus problemlos wieder in den Verkehr gebracht werden.

Outstanding finish for the iconic red buses of London Transport. Just one question why dont you put the decals on first before applying the varnish? That way they are protected.

The glass might have benefitted from a dip in Humbrol Clear gloss to make it look less like plastic. Its what i use on my aircraft canopies and works well.

To “hold” a moving or fixed part, you can use mechanical grease at the junction, for example for doors, you apply it to the pivots, so the doors hold “well” in place! ...
You can also remove vacuum metallised chrome from plastic with cooled down caustic soda solution.
I always wanted this model as a kid, but surprisingly, for a Dinky Toy in the UK, they weren't very common. I only managed to get one about ten years ago. It's a good thing I'm patient. 😆😆😆

That's a fairly butchered paint job to tidy up. I had one of these as a kid, but it got lost. I loved the working doors and ringing bell. Now I have 3 boxed ones, though I'm missing the original transfer sheets. Mine have rivets instead of screws so you are lucky. I always wanted a northern bus like a Leyland National or Bristol Re of this quality as I never saw London buses until long after these had retired. Excellent job you've done. You're definitely not shy about wasting paint 😂. Some even went on the bus. Was that clear lacquer after the red ? The wheel moulds are genius 👍🥇

These models like that bus was a bit expensive back then, but not as much as now... I would need to take photos of the model, specially from the opening mecanism inside. Time consumming and need of attention.

I know that they have one deck buses which went for the outskirts of london. The double deck travelled around central London.

In 1974, it must have been an expensive toy... a new model like that would be around 60 to 100 euro (depends on the brand but I'm thinking of SIKU for example because they have buses).
Where did you get the white backed transfers, i could do with a couple of sets ?
I can buy the transfers themselves without any problems online on auction sites
