It would have been easy, even in 1997, to discount Fleetwood Mac's Phoenix-from-the-flame resurrection. Yes, it had been, at that point, almost 7 years since their last quasi-hit album, the Top 20 Buckingham-less BEHIND THE MASK, and a full decade since their last Top 10 (1987s TANGO IN THE NIGHT). Their last #1, MIRAGE, was in 1982. But the Mac's legend supersedes such frivolities. One should never underestimate the power of hundreds of millions of sold albums, or a Rock n Roll soap opera nonpareil. Fleetwood Mac might have been dinosaurs by the late 1990s, but they were far from extinct.
Of course, with all the turmoil that imploded the band, it was a pipe dream for any ardent Mac fan to ever hope that the classic line-up -- obviously it's most artistic, and not the mention, lucrative -- would ever reform. McVie retired in her English castle, Buckingham was busy with his own career, and Nicks had her own solo career with varying degrees of success, half of which was riddled with drug addiction and recovery.
This line-up's last public performance was at the request of the White House. Throughout his campaign for president, Bill Clinton used "Don't Stop" as his official theme song, and President-elect Clinton requested the Mac perform it at his 1993 inauguration. But reuniting wasn't even on their radar.
But, reunite they did, and the result was a wonderful live album called THE DANCE. The Grammy-nominated CD hit #1 and a refreshed, healthy, sober and exhilarating Fleetwood Mac embarked upon a comeback for the ages, mounting a monumentally successful tour and reigniting the world's passion for the classic assemblage.
In the following clips, Stevie Nicks, Lindsay Buckingham, Christine McVie, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood are interviewed in North Hollywood, California, during their rehearsals that begot the CD and live TV concert. The interview took place on April 18 1997.

At about 11:40-11:50 when the interviewer asks "Did it take some talking?" (In reference to Lindsey's comment about "The chemistry is still there but the baggage is gone.")
And Stevie replies with a grin "We didn't talk...."
If you listen, Lindsey chuckles and whispers with a half grin, "We're still not talking." 😂😂😂

Stevie has said that The Dance and all the hubbub surrounding it was hard for her, fresh out of rehab for klonopin, and Lindsey was like a life raft for her during all of this when she was like a deer in headlights. @WatchYourAttitude It's hard to imagine that this was already 13 + years ago. This was such a surprising gift to Fleetwood Mac fans. The group had basically vanished by this point and then this wonderful reunion of the classic lineup of Fleetwood, McVie, McVie, Buckingham & Nicks. The Dance was epic and showed again their success was no fluke. Lindsey finally grew up and accepted FM for the supergroup it was and will always be by patching up his differences with the group and leading this gem.

Thanks so much for posting this, there can't be a better behind the scenes subject than Fleetwood Mac! Lindsey clearly trying to re-connect with Stevie but she's having none of it! Although I get the impression things changed as the weeks progressed, listen to the lyrics from 'Thrown Down' off of Say You Will. Written almost definitely after Lindsey's 'baby news' became known.
Rumour has it that Stevie and Lindsey were seeing each other at this time.

After all of the comments about SN from LB in the news lately, she will never reconnect. She certainly doesn't need the $$$$. I just saw Lindsey in concert last Saturday night. Wow. He still has it! His voice, though a bit lower, is superb. Best I've heard him in 30 years. I was shocked how good he sounded. He truly was the genius behind the band. Stevie may have been the face/voice of the band, but he was the catalyst. Too bad he didn't get the notoriety that she did. I think that's where a lot of his anger comes from. Just my .02.

I agree with marguitar1, I really miss Christine. She added another depth to this band. And yes, Lindseys' firting with Stevie was cute, although I wondered why she didn't even attempt to look his way.... smile at him or something.

I do find it interesting this discounts the effort the band put into its last album in 2003 - Say You Will. That album lacked Christine McVie but it had a few hits on it, and the album hit Gold in the USA which is the same as Behind the Mask (although one service gave that the Platinum listing). Say You Will (Nicks) and Peacekeeper (Buckingham) charted in the Top 40 as well. Considering it sold over 500,000 copies after the turn of the century it was regarded as a success (peaked at #3 in the USA in album weekly sales). The solo albums that Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham talk about in this interview never happened but instead a duet album with both of them called Lindsey Buckingham Christine McVie which did well, charting in the top 20 in the USA in 2017.
I love the "Say you will" album. But the 2 singles didn't chart in the Billboard Top 40, hot 100. They charted in the top 20 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary charts. "Peacekeeper" did make the Hot 100, charting at number 80. It's also FM's last appearance on the Hot 100, sans the recent return of "Dreams."

The press tour for the Dance tour started about 3 months after Stevie was out of rehab for the tranquilizer Kolonapin(sp)? Prescribed to her by a physiatrist. She said this was the first period in time since 1975 that she was drug free. She's also said this was the most vulnerable time in her life. On another note. I saw Fleetwood Mac perform. On with the show in Indianapolis, on Oct.21. Transcending show. I, like all the other 18,000. Fans that night didn't want the show to end.

Lyndsey and Stevie had been together since secondary school and had a REALLY messy breakup. In the VH1 Behind the Music episode they did about them they very rarely communicated outside the band until about the turn of the century.
Cut them some slack! They're probably tired and on top of it they have a camera on them constantly. Eventually you would start to feel self conscious!
