Abandoned Ghost Town | UK's Most Polluted Street Families Forced To Leave

Today we explore an abandoned ghost town
This is the most polluted street in the UK outside of central London.
Over 21,000 vehicles use this road every single day.
The narrow road has created a canyon effect, causing a concentrated toxic environment too dangerous to live in.
The 23 properties became homes from hell for the former residents when the pollution level increasingly worsened. The government have ordered for the entire row of three story terraced houses to be demolished without delay, turfing families away from their homes.
An entire street of beautiful homes condemned, drowning in dirty air, their windows and walls caked with black dust, now abandoned, a whole community gone.
We have come to see what’s left behind…

My late grandparents lived in number 14, the roads weren't as busy when they lived there, it was a happy childhood spending days in their garden and in the brook. My dad was born in the house too.

I was just imagining how lovely it would have been! Fewer cars and what a multidimensional layout for patios, gardens, and play areas. The fresh breezes from the trees and brook is why they didn't smell things as bad in the back. I could practically feel the breeze. We need more trees for the future. There are ways to build better now with the environment.

I literally live 2 minutes away from here, I grew up in number 12, the houses have now been demolished as of two weeks ago!
Have so many fond memories of here, the back gardens were awesome and if you cross the little Brook/stream at the back of the houses and walk up about 100yards you'll find the old mine shaft!
These were miners houses back in the day!
You would clean the windows & the exact same day there would be a layer of soot back on the window!
The lorries were annoying, they would rattle the windows as they passed and god help us when the emergency services were going past 24/7!
I have pictures of what it used to look like if you would like to see them!

A unique visit and very nicely done, thanks Sam and Jess! I briefly lived in a house on a very busy street and beyond the exhaust fumes, the droning sound of passing cars creates a kind of low-level mental stress. You get used to the noise in one way, but never experience true silence or a sense of calm. I really noticed a difference when I left and lived in a new place. I'm sad for these families but I hope they left before the environment ruined their health.

Sadly re-routing the main road would have done more harm (i.e. a bypass having to be built through the countryside) than just removing the houses. It's a main road and I'm sure pollution was much worse there in the 1970s, but now these things are measured people's health rightly can't be allowed to be put at risk. The homeowners were given 150% of the value of their homes, so should not have been out of pocket, though it must be sad to move.

Dear Sam and Jess-just tripped onto your channel recently and I’m really enjoying it. Your laid back, easy going vibe is very cool, and your choice of places is very interesting. And the fact that animals naturally come to Jess says everything about her character-animals naturally recognize an open, loving heart and a “safe” human to be near. Now, a bit of serious motherly-as well as medical-advice-get yourselves respirators! The mold spores, bacteria, pollution, aerosolized bird and bug, um, feces, that you breathe in can really do a number on your lungs, resulting in lifelong problems. Yes, they’re restrictive and a pain in the neck but so are chronic lung conditions and systemic illnesses… Please keep doing what you’re doing, though-you do it so well and really provide some pleasant armchair exploring for those of us very far away (Fairfax, Virginia actually, just outside of Washington, DC) who would not otherwise get to see these places, let alone even know about them. Thank you for posting your great videos. Stay safe. 🐾

The private houses are going to be worth a fortune. Once every one gets over the shock and the houses are double/triple glazed as the air port gets bigger they need more people, more people mean a need for more housing Result very expensive houses. It happened in Staines near London Airport.

I lived next to a 110km/h rated highway for a few years up until last year. Not this close, but a big parking area inbetween. The balcony was pretty much unusable (unless wearing hearing protection), and the windows are triple insulated to keep out the noise. I can very much imagine what these families must've been suffered living here, the constant motor noise and smell.

It's a stream that probably eventually meets up with a river. Residential areas such as this one should have had a one way traffic system and maybe the pollution wouldn't have been so extreme as to warrant the tenants to have to be moved out of the area. With housing crisis across the country being severe it,s a disgrace to demolished perfectly habitable houses.

Its only been empty a couple of months local council bought them to demolish for a better wider road. The pollution isn't as bad as they make out. Biggest issue its a bottle neck so traffic builds up at peak times, hence a new road going in. I don't reckon 21000 cars use it a day either, certainly not now anyway. Most go to M4 via the alternative route.
