  • Here's a video I made years ago, but I thought I'd give it another show.
    I wanted to bring to the world's attention;
    the works of the World's Worst Poet who had little retention - William Topaz McGonagall, I have to mention.
    Enjoy my recitation of McGonagall's famous accounting of 'The Tay Bridge Disaster', even though, as a reciter, I am no master.

      He believed rhyming was the only necessity to creating poetry.

    McGonagall is such a treasure. I like the description I read once, where it's like he basically got it into his head that the *_ONLY_* salient feature of poetry is that it rhymes, and steadfastly ignored every single other possible feature. 🤣
    On the topic of lesser-known Scottish poets, I quite love James Clerk Maxwell…yes, the third-greatest scientist of all time after Einstein and Newton also penned some _fantastic_ verses. (Including the only treatment of college-level physics in poetry I've ever seen done justice!)

    Thanks for introducing me to this doggerel. From what I've read, he was pelted with eggs when reading his works. Some of his "fans " were ironic in their "appreciation ".
    In the US in the 1940s there was a wealthy widow who fancied herself a concert singer. She ALSO had an ironic "fandom " among critics who attend her vanity recitals scarcely concealing their contempt. A recording of her work used to be available under the title "Florence Foster Jenkins: The Glory of the Human Voice?" A biopic was released starring Meryl Streep was released some years ago.
    Perhaps someday we'll get a film of your poet.

    I just saw this. Now my world is complete having been introduced to William Topaz McGonagall 🤣. I looked him up and I think I found the problem. I found this:
    "McGonagall was not the first and certainly not the last of a long line of “Scottish bad poets”. Born in 1825, we know precious little about his early life as he appears to have faked his birthplace as Edinburgh when it is more probable that his Irish parents brought him to Scotland as a youngster. " So maybe, just maybe, he was not a proper Scottsman to begin with. Just sayin...😗

    Windswept Robert loved McGonagall’s verse, But others thought it was quite perverse. They wanted him to read something more grand, Like “The Boy Stood on the Burning Deck” at hand.
    But Robert was stubborn and refused to change, He’d read what he liked, no matter how strange. He’d sit in his chair, with a book in his hand, And read McGonagall’s poems so grand.
    The wind would blow through his hair so wild, As he read of the Maid of the Mountains so mild. He’d laugh and he’d cry at each silly rhyme, And think to himself, “I’m having a good time.”
    So let us all learn from Windswept Robert, And read what we like, no matter how odd. For poetry is meant to bring us joy, And that’s something we should never destroy.
    Now, don't blame me for that effort, it was Chat GPT! ;-)

      I love the story of how he hiked all the way to Balmoral, over some extremely rough terrain (just like me on ma odyssey over (Aird's Moss) and when he finally arrived - half deid, he demanded to see the Queen so that he could apply for the job as Poet Laureate! I think I mention this in my other McGonagall recitation linked at the end of this video.

      I was a huge Stephen King fan and had read everything he had published - including the Bachman books. I particularly enjoyed his collaboration with Peter Straub to produce 'The Talisman'. I kinda fell away from him when he produced the Dark Tower series. I struggled through the Gunslinger, but it just couldn't keep my interest. I never did finish that series and I haven't read any Stephen King since then :(
