    Fun fact: when Brave new world tour started in 2000 they experimented with The Fallen Angel in the set list, but later replaced it with The Mercenary, because they thought the energy of this song for a live performance is greater...

    Funfact: this song was actually written by Janick Gers and was already ready for Virtual XI, along with Dream of Mirrors and The Nomad (and partly Blood Brothers). They rearranged it during the Brave New World's sessions and Adrian got to play the solo on it.
    I love his solo on this one. Particularly his lick at 4:39. Smooth.

    I've seen Maiden live 7 times. They were never anything short of metal perfection. There was one poorly promoted show for the Brave New World Tour where only about 3000 people showed up. Bruce made us promise that we would go nuts in the concert. The band then played as if there were 300,000 of us. Needless to say, next time they came to town, there were 17,000 people at the concert.

    This song on the studio album was an alright song, where live in Rio it steps it up a couple notches. I know Adrian is Hurm's favorite of Maiden's guitarists but for me it's been Dave Murray, followed very close by Adrian Smith.

    U can hear the difference in styles when Dave Murray takes a solo... then Adrian Smith blazes one out... just the contrasting guitar styles blending together is incredible... Those two had been playing together since they were teens before Iron Maiden, so they have a great teamwork mentality... All 3 guitarists do - they nicknamed Murray, Smith & Gers as "the 3 amigos" cos they get along so well on and off stage.
    As far as Iron Maiden as a live band, they've had 25 years to build the sound that u hear in this 2001 concert... Early Iron Maiden was a very raw and rough sounding band... U can listen to the demos of 'Sanctuary'... 'Prowler'... 'Iron Maiden'... and they;'ve come a long way since... Steve Harris & Dave Murray have been the longest-serving members, but Harris credits the spirit in which the band was built on, and he and Murray were just the ones who kept the spirit alive.
    Dave Murray initially joined in 1976, but the singer Dennis Wilcock was a bit of an insecure git... he demanded that Murray (and the other members) be fired for inane reasons... Steve Harris tried to re-tool Iron Maiden w/ guitarist Terry Wapram, keyboardist Tony Moore and drummer Barry 'Thunderstick' Purkis... it was a disaster. It was shambles... In 1977, it was obvious Iron Maiden had gone backwards... After Wilcock quit in 1977, the band fell apart... Harris decided he wanted Dave Murray back in Iron Maiden, so Terry Wapram was fired when he objected... Doug Sampson joined on drums, and the 3 rehearsed w/ diligence and persistence until they finally found Paul Di'Anno and asked him to be their singer in '77... So, the 4 were Iron Maiden for quite a few years til 1979, w/ a lot of 2nd guitarists coming in and then bailing out. When Iron Maiden was signed in 1979, their touring schedule seemed to expand, and Sampson was exhausted, ill and could no longer fulfill those demanding obligations, so he quit. Clive Burr made a significant improvement from the demos to the first Maiden album in 1980.
    U mentioned Kiss... well, Kiss was a huge inspiration for Iron Maiden as a live band after they opened for Kiss' European arena tour in 1980... the early Iron Maiden (Harris, Murray, Stratton, Burr and Di'Anno) were awestruck at how good Kiss was live and were also a theatrical band visually... Kiss actually helped define Iron Maiden from that tour onwards.
    Another was Judas Priest... Iron Maiden opened for Priest in 1981 and 1982, and there were some problems between the 2 bands. But it was a humbling experience to open for that high caliber of a heavy metal band like Judas Priest, and it taught them a lot... Bruce Dickinson recalled Maiden opening for Priest and described them as a "panzer division" running over you... they were that powerful live.
    If u listen to the early Iron Maiden demos and the live tracks from 1980 - '81, u get the development of the band sonically, as Clive Burr replaced Doug Sampson on drums... Dennis Stratton (guitar) recalled he was asked to contribute backing vocals for the first Maiden album, but they thought it sounded too much like Queen... so they dropped that aspect. Adrian Smith then replaced Stratton... and then Bruce Dickinson replaced Paul Di'Anno and the band's sound just took a giant leap forward in 1982 w/ 'The number of the beast'. Then, Nicko McBrain (drums) replaced Burr in 1983, and that was another improvement... Listen to the live EP 'Maiden Japan'... and then listen to 'Live after death' to hear the evolution.
    One of the things Adrian Smith complained about was that Maiden was playing live w/ reckless abandon in 1988 (U can watch the concert video 'Maiden England'... the band was ramping up the tempos playing their songs live) and his songs (he felt) were being "strangled" in concert... It wasn't fun anymore, so Smith bailed in 1989.
    Janick Gers had been active as a guitarist since the early 80's... he had played in Ian Gillan's (Deep Purple) solo band, and a number of other metal bands... In 1989, he was fed up and determined to leave the music business, but agreed to play on Bruce Dickinson's solo album 'Tattooed millionaire'... Once that album was recorded, Maiden needed a new guitarist after Adrian Smith had quit, and Janick Gers got the job.
    Iron Maiden had been established in the 80's, and they had spent the 90's active on the road... so all those years of playing gigs together culminated in what u see and hear in the 'Rock in Rio' show.

      Beg to differ on the backing vocals as the sounding two much like "Queen" specifically in reference to version of Phantom Of The Opera that Dennis Stratton and the sound engineer cooked up whilst the rest of the band weren't in the studio. Also Adrian and Steve contribute backing vocals for most songs. Adrian was missed as much for his backing vocals as his guitar playing.

    • @sumonjamal1653
      @sumonjamal1653 Před rokem

      @@stevored1989 Iron Maiden does not have much backing vocals... they are not AC/DC. The first Iron Maiden record had some on 'Iron Maiden'... 'Phantom of the Opera'... but that was it... 'Wratchild' on the 2nd album had some as well...
      I've listened to all the Maiden albums, and Adrian Smith does not HAVE any backing vocals, and that is evident in the concert videos for 'Live after death' and 'Maiden England'... I think 'Wasted years' and 'Heaven can wait' were the only songs that had backing vocals. Steve Harris is rarely in front of a mic... so ur claims are pretty baseless as far as I can hear & see...

      @stevored1989 Před rokem

      @@sumonjamal1653 You really need to watch the videos closely both Steve and Adrian have a mike on stage and the definitely provide backing vocals, mostly the chorus, for The Clansman (the "Freedom" bits), Run To The Hills and The Evil That Me Do for this concert alone. On Flight 666 Bruce even hands over to Adrian for the chorus of Wasted Years!!!!

    • @sumonjamal1653
      @sumonjamal1653 Před rokem

      @@stevored1989 OK, now I know u r pulling my leg... Steve Harris does some backing vocals... but Adrian Smith does very little behind a mic (besides 'Wasted years')
      And neither do backing vocals for 'The evil that men do'... So quit lying!
      I said it before - Maiden opted not to utilize layered vocals the way Queen and Def Leppard do it... on their first album. In hindsight, it was the best decision; it set them apart in the 80's from AC/DC, Def Leppard, Queen, Kiss, Ratt, Bon Jovi, and other bands who popularized the chorus vocals trend...

    • @stevored1989
      @stevored1989 Před rokem

      @@sumonjamal1653 I'm not pulling you leg, I might be wrong with Evil That Me Do from Rock In Rio but Adrian definitely sings the chorus of that song on one DVD maybe Flight 666.
      I'll say again the decision about backing vocals on the first album was specifically in regards to Phantom Of The Opera and a version cooked up between Dennis Stratton and the Sound engineer to which Rod Smallwood said when he heard it "Get f*****g rid of those extra vocals it sounds too much like Queen" and not a overall decision regarding backing vocals as certainly Running Free from the same album does feature backing vocals on the chorus. If they don't use backing vocals please explain the harmonised vocals on Can I Play with Maddness.
      Rock In Rio isn't the best DVD to look closely at Dave or Adrian as when Steve Harris took over the editing of it the footage from the camera which was specifically covering Dave and Adrian went missing.

    Greetings and Love from Germany again. Hell Yeah, damn good videos, buddy...your full body&face expressions said it all. Lov it...so, look, i have respect for every band/artist/musicians, doesn't matter wich genre/style. Ok, some few didn't deserve my respect and some have lost it by and by...outstanding of those is for me 'KISS', slowly they showed their real faces..they became very commercial, now it's only bout money(as if Kiss haven't enough). Music and the Fans are secondary. Overprices merchandise, too expensive concert tickets.. very shocking is for me the fact that Paul Stanley was caught lip singing/ half playback on concerts many times. Damn, as a fan i would be so pissed...shocking also their behaiver backstage, as a young reporter got the chance for an interview with Paul and Gene. Unfortunately this guy Was wearing an Iron Maiden shirt. In front of the camera he was forced to take his shirt off and to wear a Kiss shirt instead. This poor buddy didn't know to handle that. Disrespectful as Hell, at least in my opinion. I'm sure this dude had to pay them for that shirt, hehe..(the video is on CZcams to see). Well, many will scream at me, saying that is was only a funny joke by Kiss. But they can Kiss me where the sun doesn't shine. Sorry, but this Kissshit got me upset...i cant hardly wait for more Rock In Rio....stay safe, my friend and UP THE IRONS ✌

    Not a song on my Maiden top 100 list because of the unnecessary chorus repetition, but a great example of where their live performance elevates a mediocre song quite a lot. The kick-ass parts really stand out. Also, the perfection with more practice stuff is true but isn't what separates Maiden live performances from almost everyone else. It's the insistence on preparation and nothing but 100% genuine effort for almost 2 hours every single show that separates them (Steve Harris). 40+ years of that disciplined approach.

  • @badmotorbreath5206
    @badmotorbreath5206 Před rokem

    Good performance but for me the chorus is a bit repetitive, even Bruce seems to be trying to find different ways of singing it towards the end. I can understand why they played it after the BNW album release but would be pissed if they played it at a concert now over so many other better songs.
