  • Melvyn Bragg presents a documentary film about and by Catherine Cookson, who looks back at her troubled childhood, how this created her as a person and how she overcame her problems.
A very personal film, but with a keen insight into how environment for a young child was a key influence throughout its life. Her childhood was dominated by her ma Kate, but seemingly she didn't have a da, and in those days - start of the C20th - illegitimacy still cast a long shadow.
The sound and image quality are not all they could be, I'm afraid, and in a couple of sequences it is difficult to hear Catherine's narration because of other soundtracks used in the film. I do not own any copyright on this film, it was on an old vhs tape, and if the originators of the film wish me to remove it I will do so. I think it's a very moving and informative self-documentary.

My favorite AUTHOR...how I love her books, I still have them all, and the movies that were made from a lot of her books. God bless you Catherine.

She has the face of an angel like the beauty drawn by an old artist upon the barroom floor and eyes of the wisest of wisdoms. I own every book she's written which keeps me spellbound to her tho I've read them all many times over its never gets old to me. I've built a separate bookcase to house her books only its like a shrine to greatest woman who lived on the face of the earth and with my magic wand I wash away everything and anything that hurt her as she is the most precious of all flawless gems..a gift.. a mystery of our universe just for me. And now the impossible has become a possible..I hear her swert voice for the first time. Thankyou Catherine 💞 from 🇨🇦

Her work is wonderful and l wanted to hear her voice. Could listen to her all day. l was one of the people who wrote to her several times and always received a reply. I sent her a little gift for which she thanked me. In one letter she mentioned she was very tired because she had spent many hours filming for the South Bank show.

Catherine is by far my favorite author. I have most of her books and will not part with them. I live in the USA. The first book I read of hers was Maggie Rowan. Then I was hooked. Rest dear Catherine. You’ve earn it.

Catherine had a disease called HHT, (I have it) It’s a disorder of the blood vessels causing massive nosebleeds, gastric bleeding, arterio-venous malformations in the liver, lungs and brain. Miscarriages are common in this condition as is depression and anxiety. It’s a shame knowledge of her condition wasn’t as known as it is now. They probably didn’t know why she suffered as she did. My mother also suffered because doctors didn’t know how to treat her blood loss and manage her condition.

Forget the nonsense and humbug which was Jane Austen, Catherine Cookson's works for me were much more memorable.
