In this series I walk through step by step on how to build a basic western belt. We cover a range of skills including:
-measurements
-cutting
-edging
-punching holes
-dye and finish work
-attaching hardware
*Plus a bonus section on tooling with beginner tools.
Completing a large project is not a skill in itself but rather a stacking of skills. Taking the time to learn basic skills first before diving into a large project will help you avoid mistakes that cost you time and money.
As we move through this series, please let me know on the comments if you have an “ah-ha” moment or if you have a question you’d like me to go deeper answering.

I always thought you had to sew a layered belt. Now I know there is an alternative using some extra glue and extra care on edges. Thank you sir.
Edging off a long leather string is very satisfying! I love this seemingly simple to follow series! It has helped me to become a better leather worker!!
I have hesitated to make a lined belt because I don't have a sewing machine and I don't really enjoy doing a lot of hand stitching. Thank you so much for this video!
Keep learning new tips each video! Keep ‘em coming Joe thank you so much!!
This was a great series, Thnx Joe
Yippee! Now I know what I was doing wrong with my oval buckle hole that made it so difficult! Your video solved my problem!!! Thanks, Joe! I'm really enjoying this 'Belt Building Series'!!! 😀
I use a sharp wood chisel for my oblong holes. I just make sure my cutting edge is straight up and down. I never seem to get a clean cut when using a razor blade. Even if I do it the way he showed, I end up cutting into something I don't want to, or it's crooked
Thank you for these videos they are so helpful and very easy to follow it helping me make better belts and looks more professional thank you sir and happy New Year’s Eve to you and your family
Great series! How do you measure out for the belt if the customer has never owned a western belt before?
This is the first time I've seen you sand an edge. I thought you were so good, no need to sand.
I look forward to,seeing your expert teaching videos that you produce for free..
Nice buckle. I like just up the road from Montana Silversmiths.
Great video joe I was wondering how wide fora liner should I use on 1-1/2" belt looks like you used a 2" liner on the belt you making, and what kid of liner should I use thanks.
The BEST 'Basic Belt Building' video EVER!!! Everything I needed to know to make a professional looking dog collar, including all the 'Tips & Tricks' along the way! Thanks, Joe, for sharing your knowledge and experience. You are an AWESOME instructor!
I’ve learned so much from this series.. thanks for the lessons. What do you recommend to follow neatsfoot oil on veg tan? I’m not dying just wanting to condition and leaving natural... thanks
Thanks again. Is there any reason why you wouldn't do the edge trimming/shaping before dying the front so you could dye the edges at the same time?
I think tokonole (I might have the spelling wrong) can be used instead of the gum stuff. I actually have a slicker stick that could be used instead of cloth so I'd go with that method, but I know a lot of viewers might not have that.
Wouldn't the edges be sealed with the same sealant as the front as well?
This series is one of the most informative series I've seen on how to do leatherworking. Thank you very much and it was just in time as I received a two belt buckles as gifts and need to make a belt for each. Thanks for this series.
What is the best way to stamp letters into a pattern? I have a friend that wants a belt with a basket weave pattern and his company name incorporated. Great videos keep em coming!
Hi Joe - when you are doing a glue in liner have you ever used a roller to help with smoothing out the liner and promoting adhesion of the glue? Would using a roller risk deforming the tooling?
You should be good as long as you’re not rolling too hard. Sometimes I’ll use a flat faced hammer around the edges.
Can I use tokonole instead of the gum T…?
I've seen you use chap leather to line projects in some of your other videos but this one you used 3-4oz. I was wondering what the difference is and when you use each one
My belts look good and its from your videos and some others!! Thanks!!!
You’re welcome! Thank you for watching!
If you have a piece of leather that was given to you, how do you know what ounce it is?
Ounce relates to the thickness of the leather. One once is equal to 1/64 of an inch. (I know that’s hard to measure without a gauge.)
The more experience you get handling different leather you’ll gain a feel for it.
How come you don’t edge bevel the belt before you dye the leather?
I don't think it's really an issue when you do it, but I notice that if I have my edges knocked down first, they tend to end up darker than the rest of the project. When i do my edges after and get them burnished, they seem to be the same as the rest of the project.
Is there a way to download these lessons.
Steve Johnstone
I will keep these on my CZcams for you to have access to them. As far as downloading from there, you’re getting outside of my expertise. I would imagine that google would have a better answer than me for that one.
I don't know about Microsoft Edge or Chrome, but if you use Firefox there is an extension to help with downloading CZcams videos
