the shade @ wild flys @4:09 kills me haha
Scotties mustache is sweet! That's the source of all his power!
Always saying I want a sticker for my Subaru “been places your Jeep has only dreamed of” 😂
I've owned both a 2WD XJ Cherokee and a bone stock Impreza. It was interesting off roading in both because each could do things the other couldn't. The Jeep was 300 lbs lighter than the Subaru and had outstanding clearance, but the little Imp could mountain goat up stuff that the Jeep would start spinning on. I miss both vehicles a lot.
@@NoBrakes23 agree. I had a 2002 liberty which was a tank and went through and over anything, then a 4dr wrangler before the Crosstrek.
It’s the time of year here in MT that the streets of Ennis are full of gear on the outside rigs ,Jeep Gladiators , Tacomas and new Bronco’s .The good news I never see them 4 wheeling or at the boat ramps . I really don’t know where they go when they leave the bars . Stay Hugh
The shrapnel strapped to the truck killed!!!!😂😂 not gonna lie, I have an awning on my 4runner
I put a half million miles on my first Honda element, an 04 and it’s still rippin. All wheel drive, can tow a small boat, no carpet, backseats pull out for extra gear storage/sleeping, gas mileage is great, and best of all it was cheap! My 2nd element just hit 300k miles, the things just keep on keepin on 🤣🤘🏻
Tacoma + Fly Fishing + watching huge fly fisherman = a really good day!
Tacomas are for guys who want to say they have a truck but are too scared to get a real truck
I had a 96 Four Runner ( 17 mpg ) same 6 as Tacoma. Then I bought a 03 Tundra with the 4.7 V8. Maybe 16mpg. But it was fast!
@@Paqq6969 I have ‘19 Ram Hemi too. Didn’t realize my comment would trigger you into a dick measuring contest . . .
Toyota enjoys the extra attention you give to the giggle berries.
Any vehicle with a rod locker strapped to the roof goes to “gear on outside guy” list.
Best vehicle for fishing is the one that gets you to the spot!
Just spent the weekend in the white mountains (AZ) on my first fly fishing trip, and realized I was missing monday's video 😲! ( in a beat-up 70's Chevy pickup)
Thanks for all the info, and encouragement, Ben, stay huge!
‘79 Jeep CJ5……with a trailer holding EVERYTHING because there is literally no room in a CJ5! It gets me there…
I owned a 04’ Outback for 10 years. After the head gasket repair, no worries. The rear opens up, providing an awning, and somewhere to sit to put on waders, and drink a beer. With the seats folded down, a 9’ fly rod fits, no problem. My son inherited it. Now my 04’ Honda Element (orange) AWD is my ride. Tailgate with a “canopy”, easy clean floor for wet/muddy boots, fly rod fits, great stereo, and it looks so dorky, no one takes me too seriously. Bonus is the rear window is huge for stickers of fly shops I’ve order crap from, that I’ll never visit.
Which Outback though? The Lego Outback or the Imp Outback? (Either way a good car.)
@@NoBrakes23 The rusty but trusty Subie one. Poor thing.
The stereo is a must. Good road music playlists on home-burned CD's (I buy the original CD's and keep them in the fly tying hovel at home - gotta respect the artists who put them together) just what I want to hear instead of what somebody else's Pandora inflicts on me. My older son got a Blaupunkt stereo for my old Dodge... sounds make the trip to the river and the ride home.
Man, I enjoy when you do these, fishing is good too. But your are the only one that can pull this off. Thanks and stay Huge 👍
And hope you and yours are all doing well 😉
The take on “gear on the outside guy” was so spot on. I see these people all the time but rarely in remote places. When I do see them off the pavement they’re usually parked at the beginning of a forest service road with all their gear sprawled out. The farther out I go the more I tend to see old beaters, myself included with an old Jeep WJ.
See them all the time here. Chrome rims, mint paint jobs, lol. The snorkel always cracks me up.
I personally built my Tacoma for fishing. All suspension to go fast and to get to remote spots the few would travel too. I still prefer packing ultra light gear for faster set up and tare down.
Honestly if you drive an older toyota or Jeep it’s probably not a bad idea to carry some extra gas
The vehicles here in Australia often have different names, but Ben has captured it well. I'm a bit 'gear outside' with under belly bashplate, front recovery points and kangaroo bar. All except the roo bar have had real use - roo bar is insurance against incidents like my fishing buddy has gone through multiple times. Maybe Australian fishing tracks are less developed. 🤔 Keep up the commentary Ben.
@@Greenbean5673 Haha you're not wrong and I get your point but if I'm ever really going "out there" I have a full tank. My wj is stock and I can get 22 mpg combined because of the topography.
Pretty spot on. 😂 Love my jeep, but other than racks on the outside for my snowboards in the winter and my rod carriers for the rest of the time there is no outside gear weighing me down. Clearance never an issue. It’s a 2009 with 230,000+ miles, all mine getting out there! Have a 1998 4Runner that’s bad ass too, and have owned several Subarus…Point A to B is the ultimate goal, and hopefully some water with fishies when I get there!
Honorable mention should be any old suburban. Don’t forget those strap on rod holders. Here in Montana it is a total giveaway for a poser. Especially leaving them mounted in the winter time. Probably paid the shop to install it, and can’t figure out how to remove it.
Yeah, and the guy in the shop probably had to string the rod up for him before putting it in the carrier, and the guy keeps it there, strung up, big bobber and Perdigon and all, because he'd have difficulty doing it himself every time he went fishing.
It's kind of an Urban Cowboy thing, isn't it?
Thanks for the humor - my wife's 2000 Honda Odyssey was a near perfect novice fly fishing van until you drove it off road. Love her 2013 4Runner Trail for towing and driving 4x4 roads - the latter really opened up our fishing for wild native trout.
This is the first time, I have ever regretted buying a Tacoma. Thanks!
Lol, I use a Buick Lesabre, hauls a 14ft boat nicely, and plenty of room for gear. The looks, as I back down the ramps are priceless.😂
Love it! Back in the day my fishing and hunting buddy had a green late '50's Buick Station Wagon that went everywhere. Ugly comfort on wheels.
LOL at the Knoxville Mom's Blog photo with the 4-runner. It perfectly depicts the people who have invaded this place.
I have a Tacoma and my wife has a 4 runner. I like the 4 runner better. But none of that matters. I'm here to hate on the "Overlanders". We just spent a week in Colorado and saw tons of overlanding rigs on the road. But absolutely zero off pavement. We were about 35 miles back in the San Juans and did see a sketchy looking dude in a Geo Metro with a 55 gal. barrel in the back though. He seemed interesting.
I live in the area and have explored many of the forest service roads and blm lands out here to camp/fish. I see so many of these “rigs” driving on the highway or parked at the pull outs. Based on how many I see the odds that I never see them in remote places doesn’t add up. The farther you go the more old beaters you see and cars that you wonder how the hell they got there.
You've been spot on with these videos. You should do one on "junk" flies and anglers who are way too uptight on what flies to use. Keep up the good work!
I love my Tacoma! Been on some sketchy narrow trails, but she never fails.
Maybe it’s cos of being from a smaller country and not having millions of fly fishermen around, but the folks that treat their fly boxes like Fort Knox or hide their fly tied on while walking past you piss me off. If I come across someone new to the water I’m fishing or someone passing by on holiday I would usually give them three or four of the pattern of the day if they don’t have it to hand. We’re all out there to have fun and in my experience people having a good experience with other anglers end up being a lot better with etiquette.
Hysterical!! Loved it.
Haha this is awesome. I fish with a 74 FJ40... what can I say. Terrain is rough where I live and I definitely dont need to go fast... (And a 74 FJ40 doesnt allow you to go fast so...)
"unless your Tacoma is before 2004 - then none of this applies to you" - Love it! Sadly mine is a 2019 ;)
Can't get enough of this one! 2012 Tundra here, but it hauls my 30' travel trailer.
Down our way on the FL panhandle we have a Jeep guy that has enough stuff on, beside, under his Wrangler to pull, push or lift a fleet of trucks - never seen it on the trails or with a speck of mud or even dirt. Cue headshake.... Love your stuff!
First fishing vehicle was a 02 Subaru Impreza. I have upgraded to a 07 Toyota highlander. Works good for me. Love your videos like these. The comedy is great and also great fishing videos.
Nailed it. 10/10. Would watch again.
This is perfect!
I’m a ford truck man. That’s what I drive. I ain’t got no boundaries. I don’t compromise. It’s a 2 wheel drive with knobbys but don’t get me wrong you will be pulling out at some point. Thanks in advance
I love my Tacoma its gotten me to a lot of good fishing. Its a 2014 access cab just because I liked the style of the pre '04 models but couldnt find a good one in my area.
STAY HUGE
Great video, Very funny but so true on so much of that
Bahaha...Love the pic of the Ram...You got me.
Well my wife has a Subaru but we would never take that fishing/camping. My rig is a HUGE 2017 Ram 2500, yes with the mirrors out for much better side visibility, towing a 27 foot travel trailer, a small side x side in the long bed and kayaks on top. As far as owning a Toyota...It will never happen. Keep up the great work....
I always get a chuckle when I see the "outside gear" bros with a shovel blocking half their windshield. While getting 5mpg's in their "tacos"
My shovel is for burying bodies.
lol agree. the silver 4runner (hides scratches and can pretty much travel off-planet) is the ultimate trout rig. And it'll will last to the end of days.
Man, I needed that. My old, rusty Ford creaks, rattles, but still rolls. I admit to side-eying some of those tacos, vans, and shrapnel laden vehicles though.
I enjoyed this haha
As always, this guy doesn’t miss!
Not a single dig about overhead rod tubes?? Dang!
Oh he's ripped on them multiple times in past vids, dude's hilarious. I have no shame in owning one myself though, love it!
I did like the awning! Could use that in this Texas heat. Also liked the car painted like a trout..Huge! Didn’t get to be offended though cause you passed on GMC.. doesn’t matter..my favorite car or truck has Always been the one that gets me where I’m going..hopefully the best fishing hole. Have a Huge 4th Ben and fans! 👍👍🎣👌💥🇺🇸
If you have a snorkel can't you just drive after the fish... Better than Tenkara?
Anything is better than tenkara
4:25 Eamon and Bec that cross over in my subscriptions I never thought I’d saw!
I have a tacoma myself. Had a great laugh. Also laughed so hard at the “gear on the outside guys” and the dodge roast!!! Hahahaha
Bought my wife a nice Ford 500 11 years ago, took over her old 2004 Ford Freestar.....been my fishing rig since. Actually taken it places where 4wd aficionados would sweat lol. Good Gas mileage and all my stuff can be locked up with no problem. Been made fun of but it's paid for itself 20 times over.
A few years ago I switched from a truck to an Outback and I don't regret it. Better gas mileage, and it can go anywhere a truck can. I haven't even gotten stuck once with the Outback, and my truck used to spin tire all the time.
Spot on my guy
You crack me up...I'm in. 😂
YES ASTRO VAN FOR THE WIN
I have to comment on the Dodge driving bobber watcher. You've been in my beat to shit dodge diesel many times. I haven't fished a bobber/indicator in years. Hell I'm trying to locate my 5wts and trout flies for an upcoming trip with a Huge Flyfisherman. Plus side of said beat up huge Dodge diesel. When pulling into the ramp with turbo spinning, dents from front to back, no fly fishing stickers or the like just motocross #plates on the cracked glass, and whip the trailer 180° and back into position(of course I'm ready to put in, I rarely break my shit down) I immediately hear, "We'll get right out of your way"😂
I've had all the trucks at one point in time, but the best one is still the '98 Dodge Dakota with a CTC cap and a homemade canoe rack on top. I keep trying to replace it, but it always wins.
Nail on the head!
First one was 2wd S-10 that went a lot of places it never should have... and it showed. Next was V-6 a Rav-4. Now rocking the Tacoma!
Damn you nailed it with this one ☝️
I love the guy who said he drives a dodge and can't even fish a bobber right. On a serious note, my 97 tacoma's pushing a half-million right now. 5-speed 4-cylinder four-wheel-drive all stock. No way i'll ever be able to replace it. Has never let me down, stuck, or stranded. Yes, Tacomas rock. Nice job Ben, Keep up the good work.
I have 2020 tacoma and I love it but I think I would trade it straight up for a 97 tacoma with a 4 banger and a stick shift
01 Golf TDI, rods not broken down, jammed in tight with the curve of the windshield and the tips protected in the defroster
I have what i could afford, 2016 Chevrolet Traverse, hauls my kids, and my gear. Decent in the snow, yeah we get tons up here and takes me to nail Kings and Coho's
RAV4 with AT tires. I can’t afford a Toyota truck or 4Runner, but it handles remote two tracks and hauls out elk in the fall.
I drive 2005 suburban Z71 with 300,000 mi. on her leveled with all terrains fits a queen sized air mattress, 5 day cooler, my dog and all the gear I could ever want ( on the inside). Oh and my wife. Stay Huge Brother! Happy 4th drink a cold one!🍻👊🇺🇸
Oh there you are brother! Mother always talked about you. Same vehicle. Same year. 326K though.
@@fluxcapacitor05😂😂
That was good! I'm 50/50 driving a Forester (2006 Outback previously) but with a Roof Top Tent . Euro type vehicles? Range Rovers.
My 4Runner rocks. Just did the continental divide from Canada to Mexico. I used my shovel quite a bit😉
Whatever gets me pulled off the road in a foot of snow. Good vid. Thanks.
I own a '23 Subaru Outback and my (she fly fishes also) owns a '24 Subaru Crosstrek. Both have 8.7" ground clearance. All the gear fits right in the back. All we need here in CT and I'd even drive it on the Greys River road in Wyo. Heading out to the Bitterroots next month and ditched the rental P/U (PITA to get to the gear) for a small SUV. Yes I have stickers on my car of where I fished :)
Wish there was a love button for that one! Have a great day dude
Yeah, pretty much nailed it. Taco with no missile launchers or gear on the outside.
No motorcycle guy!? Moto fishing for the win!
Laughed more than once 😂
I drove a 2002 Volvo XC70 for a while. It had BFG all terrains and a stage 2 tune making about 250hp and 300 torque. It was kind of like driving a fast Subaru Outback. Now I have a 2010 Volvo XC60 T6 that I use. Tows my flats boat good and it is still surprisingly fast.
Hahahaha! I only have one sticker on my Grandpa’s Ford…. I SUCK AT FLY FISHING!!! love it!!! My opinion is if it gets you on the water that’s all that matter.
Awesome. 🍻🤙
Bahahahaha 😂 spot on. Loved it.
Hey listen here buddy! I drive a Ram and.......yeah okay that's pretty spot on.
drove an 88' 4 runner (4 cyl) loved that car, unless there was any kind of uphill.
That was pretty epic. Loved "gear on the outside guy." I'm in a Tacoma with a rod vault. Having a three banger with stickers on it is easier than telling every stranger that I'm a d-bag. Shit, I almost wrote tight lines. Keep 'em coming Ben.
NOOO Not Scottie's mustache LOL
Dabbler here. I have 2 jeeps, Tahoe, F250 diesel, and my personal favorite a minivan.
First generation Tundra has been my rig for 19 years - no bigger than the current Tacomas. It replaced an old-school ‘92 Toyota pickup (pre-Tacoma) when the first kid came along and a back seat was needed.
My ribs are sore from the shrapnel comment!😂
I drive a Subaru Crosstreck. Had a jeep once, definitely never again! NEVER!! Next door neighbour is the Toyota Tacoma dude with all the gear on the outside. Truck never seems to move and is always very clean.
TacO NAtioN BRöther! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Outbacks have surprising ground clearance actually. My 2016 has about the same clearance as my 2006 Silverado. I wouldn't count on the Subaru's power getting me out of a hole though. I also don't pull anything with it. It's probably the perfect wade fishing car though.
We do a bit of fishing from the sxs in maine. Come on over and catch some ditch pickles! Super fun°°
All I do is fold my back seat down and I can fit an assembled 9' fly rod and camping gear in my Elantra, makes it easy hopping around chasing hatches on any road that follows a river. Hangs around 36mpg. If mud is not an issue, I will get into a few forest service roads depending on the day. Often some extra hiking is required.
Oops bought a tacoma yesterday. This is a well timed video lol
The best vehicles for fishing are Fords. Ford has the option of a keypad on the door, meaning you can lock your keys in the truck and not have to worry about losing them. This is one of the best options ever.
Subaru has that option on the back of the hatch there's a button you can program a code to for the keyless entry models!
I miss that option, thought it was a gimmick til my wife locked the keys in the car
@@EnterEther Good to know.
Love my F-150 work truck. Only full-size pickup I've driven that actually feels sporty.
100% best feature ever
From a AK ASTRO guy, this was another good one🤣. Stay Huge
Hilarious. Thank you for bagging on the outside guy and the Covid-survival-van-guy. I see those guys everywhere and never fishing or camping. But gotta have that shiny never-used shovel. Ketchup packets!!
What about the dude on the dual sport motorcycle… I’ve got to put something in this huge boxes strapped to the sides of my bike.
That thing at the end about the stickers 😂
I have a 2000 Tacoma. I feel like a MAN now that I have your approval.
A totally different story accross the pond!
The TACO type guys from the US drive Subarus in Europe.
The rest of us drive ordinary hatches/saloons/estates with basically no offroad capabilies as we barely need any when going fishing.
My Dodge is somewhat of a relic - like me - and is old enough to be exempt from your judgement about Dodges. It's a suitable vehicle to carry a vintage Powell bamboo fly rod, or if one must get newfangled and fancy, a Burkheimer. I wouldn't put a Burkheimer or Powell in a Toyota or a Subaru. The vehicle to carry such a rod must have attained a certain historical patina that denotes the owner's sense of reverence and devotion to the sport. And my old Dodge has done that. It has been covered in the mud of trout stream backroads throughout Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho - and all of it hasn't been washed off.
My fish truck is a Dodge Dakota, '93 model year delivered in'92, that took a rock chip in the passerger side of the windshield about twelve or fifteen years ago when some jackass passed me on a DO NOT PASS section of Highway 12 coming back from a fishing trip on the Lochsa when it was covered in coarse gravel before being resurfaced and he cut in way too close and threw a batch of those sharp chunks of gravel all over my truck after my buddy Wayne had just repainted it in trade for a fly rod and chipped up the paint job and put a few nicks and that one star break onto my windhsield that I had just replaced a couple of years before and now that rock chip star break has developed into a crack that goes all the way across the windshield.
There is a cover over the bed but the air shocks that are supposed to lift when you unlock it don't and the cover just sits there and has to be lifted, against the will of those wheezy old air lift shocks, until you get it lifted and then it seems to hold in place. Most of the time.
Under that cover there is always a loose pile of fishing stuff that slides all over the bed and makes what sounds like mechanical failures but aren't when I take a corner a little too fast. When I'm doing the season's first overnighter I throw an old Coleman wall tent in, the model that they used in the '84 Olympics. It's still good and easier for one old man to put up than those new fangled backpack models with the springy poles that you have to assemble while you hope your tent doesn't blow away. I can get my tent up faster than they can and then I can stand up in it and walk arould a bit, and have plenty of room for my gear without having to sleep with it cuddled against my face. I can put my wife and dog, or two grown sons or three grandchildren in the tent with me and we all have plenty of room.
I can cook on the tailgate out of a campbox I built to suit and a Coleman stove, and eat off a Herter's folding table that I got back in 1969. I can tie flies on the tailgate or a picnic bench or the Herter's folding table. It all works just fine.
My fish truck looks kinda out of place among the rigs in your video, and the guys who drive those rigs just kinda look real condescending or feel kinda sorry for me when I drive up, but that's part of why I like it - I don't get bothered too much and when I say howdy, I can sort the wheat from the chall real quick. You can tell by their rigs that some of those guys think fly fishing begins and ends with a big bobber and an itty-bitty Perdigon, and that flinging that rig is the same as casting. And they probably spent five times more on their Toyota Highlander or whatever than I did on my whole rig, camp gear and all, and tackle including the Powell bamboo to boot. But when it comes to pure fun, peace of mind, satisfaction and stories to tell, my old fish truck suits me just fine and I ain't about to trade any of them for anything they got.
2013 Tacoma with a pop-up camper in the box. Back seat messed with rods in tubes, hip-waders, Creek, snacks, and tools. In northern BC no one calls it a Taco. Stay Huge
As gear on the outside guy sick burn bud I love your videos and proudly Rock a couple stickers
Just re-watched this video. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Where are Ford Rangers (older style) in the world of fly fishing?
Keep it coming Ben! Regarding "the Euros", you should probably get some friends and take the month of August off to "caravan"! There's some things they absolutely do right.
Good video, I got some laughs. You didn’t mention the off road high clearance TearDrop trailer that can get you to the remote fishing spots for some good camping in comfort.
WHAAAAAAA...? No ARGO? The only truly huge ride. Need a full retraction/repost bro. Waiting for it, starting now... 🍿🍿🍿
The chevy guy, its a company work truck. guys have to dig past the rod tubes in the tool box to get to any of the tools and I inventory my fly boxes while filling the 88 gallon bulk diesel tank. Fishing trip are 1.5 hours long after work 2-3 times a week.
I truely don't even remember, what my last car was, but it was long enough for my fly rod, taken apart at the middle only, to be in it. Took me seconds to drop my shoes, slip into the fireman-ready waders and grab the waist pack and rod , and a bit more to switch back. Perfect.
Does this apply to fly fisherman who live west of the Mississippi River or for the whole country?
Dude - the snorkel on the tacomas allows the tenkara guys to "cast" further by driving into the river ....
😂. Thank you for the 1st gen Tacoma distinction. Details matter
