  • You might use your waders the wrong way. After +10 years of guiding, this is what I learned about how to best handle your waders. I will show how I look for leaks, the two ways I fix them, and also how to maximize the life out of your waders.

    Hi Robert, you could use gaiters to protect your wader against the brush. Fjällräven, Härkila and all other great swedish hunting brands have good "damasker" ;)

    Hello Robert. A lot of useful information. Thanks for sharing your experience.

  • @westcorkbassfishingbydavid6153

    Yes that's all pretty much what I do Robert. One other option if the suspected leak is large is to shine a torch from inside to out in a darkened room (Avoids getting them wet pre gluing) I believe there's a spray you can use to help identify leaks also, but I've never needed to use it. Bigger leaks can need a patch, there's normally some spare wader fabric supplied when new or you can cut up a totally destroyed pair 👍

    Great advice¡¡ I usually have a lot of trouble to find leaks in the socks... as it may take a lot of water pressure for them to show up...

    Hi re wader damage by walking through brush ! You could try hill walking gaiters to protect lower leg of maybe old or ex army goretex over trousers ! Not a great look perhaps but waders are not cheap and you could remove them when you reach a fishing spot ! Aome of the army trousers have full zips up side so can easily be removed.

    Hi. Robert, thank you for this video (very helpful) I'm just starting my adventure with catching pike on a fly, I bought vision gear, it's great, but I need some casting lessons. Can you make a video for beginners how to start casting with big flys,(double haul) ...
    I watched a lot of movies on this subject, but for me You and Niklaus are the best.
    Thanks.

    Hi Thanks for sharing.
    I usually turn my waders inside out and fill them with air from a pump in a bucket with water. Then I can spot the holes from air bobles and glue the wader on the inside instead.

    Hi Robert,
    I have a few pairs of Simms and have used the spray method that they recommend. I believe it only works with gortex. Turn them inside out and spray with isopropyl alcohol in a small spray bottle, all the tiny pinholes light up like a Christmas tree, the alcohol dries almost immediately allowing you to dot some sealant directly onto the pinhole, or if there’s a lot of them, I dot them with a pen and repair them all together. This method doesn’t work on the boots tho.
    I have some old ones made with other materials that I keep for saltwater fishing that I’ll use your techniques for, great tips!

    10 leaks in my Vision waders!
    9 from socks seam, and 1 from upper seam.. Will try to Aquasure them. Hope it will help) By the way, how to fix neoprene socks? Waders are less than 1 season (was leaking from buying them..), and there is small usage holes in the heels already..

      If waders are leaking from buying them. For me that sounds like something that I would talk to the shop were I bought them about before trying to fix them. You can’t take my word that they can do anything, I haven’t seen your waders and I’m no expert in warranty.

      I use a fly tying UV resin in this video but you should probably stay away from the hard resins. Flexible is much better.

    so I often get told I shouldnt use the water filling due to ot extending the seams under high water pressure. Would you say that 20liters are safe to work with?

    • @FlyFishingbyRobert
      @FlyFishingbyRobert  Před rokem +1

      I have a hard time believing that water pressure can have an effect on the seams. It is more likely the weight of the water that can tare the seams if stretched the wrong way with a lot of weight inside. If you are careful with how you lift them 20 liters is probably fine.

    • @frederik7511
      @frederik7511 Před rokem

      @@FlyFishingbyRobert thanks for responding. I will try and work ny way up to hopefully around 20 liters and see if I can find some holes

    • @frederik7511
      @frederik7511 Před rokem

      okay so did the water thing, found some holes, but definitely not then all. Then I talk to my buddy who always manages to keep his waders running forever. He told me to go to the bathroom and turn the light off and light up the waders from inside with a light source (cellphone torch, flashlight etc.) and boy did I find holes! Maybe you already know this trick, but there you go just in case you didnt! Its a complete gamechanger for me! looking forward to dry sessions again 😂🎉

    Its disappointing when we spend a lot of money on these waders, only after using them for a comparatively short time, they start to develop micro holes. We'll have to design something better...?
