- Octopuses and cuttlefish are masters of underwater camouflage, blending in seamlessly against a rock or coral. But squid have to hide in the open ocean, mimicking the subtle interplay of light, water, and waves. How do they do it? (And it is NOT OCTOPI)

--- How do squid change color?
For an animal with such a humble name, market squid have a spectacularly hypnotic appearance. Streaks and waves of color flicker and radiate across their skin. Other creatures may posses the ability to change color, but squid and their relatives are without equal when it comes to controlling their appearance and new research may illuminate how they do it.
To control the color of their skin, cephalopods use tiny organs in their skin called chromatophores. Each tiny chromatophore is basically a sac filled with pigment. Minute muscles tug on the sac, spreading it wide and exposing the colored pigment to any light hitting the skin. When the muscles relax, the colored areas shrink back into tiny spots.
--- Why do squid change color?
Octopuses, cuttlefish and squid belong to a class of animals referred to as cephalopods. These animals, widely regarded as the most intelligent of the invertebrates, use their color change abilities for both camouflage and communication. Their ability to hide is critical to their survival since, with the exception of the nautiluses, these squishy and often delicious animals live without the protection of protective external shells.
But squid often live in the open ocean. How do you blend in when there's nothing -- except water -- to blend into? They do it by changing the way light bounces off their their skin -- actually adjust how iridescent their skin is using light reflecting cells called iridophores. They can mimic the way sunlight filters down from the surface. Hide in plain sight.
Iridophores make structural color, which means they reflect certain wavelengths of light because of their shape. Most familiar instances of structural color in nature (peacock feathers, mother of pearl) are constant-they may shimmer when you change your viewing angle, but they don't shift from pink to blue.

This is beautiful, but I feel bad for the squid who got snipped :(
Seriously.
Cutting the nerves on your foot would also mutilate you for life, that's where the original commenter was going. She's saying the squid had to be seriously wounded in order to complete the study.
i found you deep down in the comment section. yeah, we are few apparently. i am so sad for the squid.
Same!🙁
Oh say can you see...
Science must move forward somehow
I'm surprised the US military hasn't dumped money into R&D for camouflage based on octopus.
Who says they haven't?
They realistically have.
Play Metal Gear Solid 4, or look up a CZcams video on it.
Who do you think gives these scientists the money to pay their salaries to do something so unprofitable like cutting squid open "just to see." All research is funded as some sort of investment, whether its medical or defense related. Very few things are done out of kindness or in search of knowledge without some sort of return on investment. You can 100 percent guarantee that some DARPA scientist is sitting around reading the reports and trying to connect the dots on the primary research that determines its viability for military camouflage technology.
@OSKSNAKE As a scientist, I can tell you that you are incorrect.
A country's government has a budget for scientific research. This amount of money is divided to various governmental bodies that deal with an aspect of scientific research. For example in Canada, 2 of the big ones are NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council) and CIHR (Canadian Institutes of Health Research). Scientists write grant proposals to apply to grants by explaining how the funds will be used and what for. If you are doing research in something that can benefit humans (like it can lead to some kind of therapy), then you apply for CIHR. If it is a project that looks at how some particular mechanism works, then you apply for NSERC (just knowledge that perhaps in the future someone will use to write CIHR grant for). Some private companies can invest into research (like the military for example) as well but not all do.
I'm working on a project that is funded by a NSERC grant, which tries to identify how the brain changes in old age (im vulgarizing it but anyway). I'm not looking for a therapy or anything. Some of the most amazing research that has given us answers to how human brains work came from studies that had no relation to humans whatsoever and were simply looking to understand how squids, sea slugs & other animals "worked"
Wow! They seem so alien compared to animals I'm used to seeing. Oceans are deep. Much to discover.
+Martch Zagorski Thank you! We've got more ocean creatures featured on our channel. Check them out!

This video made me go look up the etymology of "Octopuses". TIL: The original pluralization was Octopodes, then was incorrectly changed to Octopi because of the belief the word was Latin in origin, when it actually is Greek, and now Octopuses has become so widely used in texts it is the accepted replacement for Octopodes!
+Roulette As you might have guessed, we had several conversations about the correct plural of octopus.
+Roulette Octopuses if you're talking about multiple species of octopus, octopi if
you're referring to multiple of the same species. This isn't set in
stone, but it's the most accepted.
+Scotty Catman oh for pete's sake! the use of octopuses was driving me nuts. thanks :}
thank god I'm not the only one who hears a word then has to look up it's etymology and origin
We should probably start a support group..

DEAR GOD THAT IS _GROSS_
Me to I have trypophobia
that wasn’t even bad
I once heard that even blind squid will have their skin adapt its color... so I don't know why they had to snip one of the brain nerves.
Why did I find this in a Splatoon playlist?
Some people are trying to play it irl

Is it sad that I've never seen a squid in real life? I've also never seen a cuttlefish before
+SpidearPlays Until recently I'd never seen a live squid before either. They're apparently very tricky to keep in an aquarium so we don't even see them there very often.
+Josh Cassidy oh ok
No man me too.

I see squid all the time. Heck. We just had it for lunch lol
You are kid now, you are squid now...... Wait a second this is not splatoon

Cuttlefish are awesome
they're like.... octopus, mixed with squid, mixed with a tiny chthulu. And a frog :L Cause they have kinda tongue things they use to catch food
I know right? They're adorable ^u^ probably one of my favorite undersea animals along with jellyfish and octopodes.
I know, I know, no one says "octopodes," but I do because I like it better than "octopuses" and if I say "octopi" I'll be told it's incorrect.

The perfect Sequel to their video about Chameleons. Seriously this is fast becoming my favorite CZcams channel!
OCTOPI I THOUGHT IT WAS OCTOPI
Both are acceptable.
It is octopi and none other.
It is octopuses, check the oxford dictionary.
Octopods
Ocotopi assumes that octopus is a Latin word. The problem is, it's not, it's a Greek word. Octopodes would be the "correct" pluralization. However, that doesn't work well in English, so the correct English plural is octopuses. Octopi is generally accepted, but it's definitely not right.
Omg my trypophobia is going crazy

Amazing video! May I ask why these videos aren't uploaded in 60 frames per second, though? It's sort of a shame that such high quality footage is limited to 30 despite CZcams's recent integration of 60 fps uploads.
