Hobie 16 easy way to step a mast single handed

  • Using a block mounted on the trailer mast support and the jib cam cleat on the boat attached to the jib halyard with the jib sheet.
A ladder helps get the mast step link pin started and something to prevent the wires from getting under the platform corners.

I used to do it by installing a quick pin on the right side stay, leaving the forstay and left sided attached. It left enough slack to raise the mast slightly off center by myself. I’d then pull the mast up against the two attached stays, hold tension on the right stay and push the pin in! Done. On the water in minutes!

Bravo, Sir. I was not expecting it to be that smooth and easy! Impressive.
I would only have liked a little more clarity on what you tied your rope to.
I understand now that I see it is the main halyard to your stepping rope through a pulley on your trailer I to the Jib sheet cleats.

I wish I could have heard you better. Great video though. I was thinking about getting a Hobie 16, but was worried I could not step the mast alone. Now I know I can.

Thanks, I just uploaded a new video with more details of how I step the mast at czcams.com/video/sWEw-z8vZGs/video.html

Always have the wind at your stern when you're stepping the mast. Makes it a lot easier.

Thank you, this will help me with my boat (I'm normally not strong enough or dexterous enough to do it alone!)

Sasha it's much more difficult to lift the mast if the stern of the boat is lower than the bow also.

Appreciate the video, however it would been much better if you had a buddy filming and we could hear you and see the details

Thanks for the video - I just got a used Hobie 16 without any rigging and this really helps - tried to raise the mast today and the forestay does not reach the bridle - I thought it was the mast step link gadget keeping the mast from going forward - evidently not -

The first time I tried to connect the forestay I could not get it to connect as well. Using the jib cleat and getting it tight beforehand makes this job easy now.

Adding a second chain plate to your bridle makes life alot easier. It does nothing but hold the mast till you get the jib up , the jib is the 3rd point of your rigging. Best of luck

Maybe you should have pulled the line more to make connecting the front stay to the bridle.

Commercials will be the death of CZcams. Anyway, great video! Everyone makes it sound like the mast can’t be lifted by one person!

Hello stranger, Just waiting for a little warmer weather, wind and let's go sailing.

Easier to have two buddies from the Yacht Club help raise the mast with you..... and much quicker. The mast head float definitely working against you.

Where did you tie your line to on your rigging ?

Here's a much more detailed version of raising the Mast. czcams.com/video/sWEw-z8vZGs/video.html

Yeah but in the second video, you say "attach the pulley rope to "this here thing"

Could be a useful video if there was audible sound and if you have shown exactly what you were doing. You need a second person to do the video and sound.
