I fell in love with this movie the day I stumbled upon it. So much that I watched it again a few hours after the first viewing.... I'm weird like that but that was the first movie that made me want to watch it again so badly. I loved how Joker referenced and interpreted it as well. What I liked in both movies was the psychological descent of their main characters such as the fantasised events blending into reality to mess with the viewer's head and the point of no return when the characters 'snap'. Rupert is trapped inside of his fantasy world where he is at his happiest despite everyone telling him that he is crazy. Arthur on the other hand is a more disturbed individual with a mind that's impossible to mend. He pretty much starts at 100 and is at 1000 by the end.

By the way, this is one of the film's charms; not having a happy ending. Briliant picture with so much lessons about the whole entertainment industry, celeb stalking, the ideas of a world we paint inside our minds where everything is positive and always at our favor, in total shock with reality. Amazing. And bottom line: Love the girls who play Marsha and Rita.

The King of Comedy, released in 1982, is a truly fantastic movie! Robert De Niro's performance is captivating as he relentlessly pursues his ambitions. The 1980s ambiance of New York City adds an irresistible allure, reminding us of the changes over time. It was also a treat to see Bob include his real-life wife, Diahnne Abbott, in some scenes.

I also don't think it's any coincidence that many years after this film, Robert de Niro plays a talkshow host who, himself, is being stalked by a failed comedian, who also forces the host into a big break; in Joker. Sure, the outcome is a bit different, but there are many similarities. Still, I think casting de Niro was done deliberately as a callback.

2- Obviously his origin comes from tragedy
3- He happens to be a failed comedian
That’s literally it. If you take the plot of this movie, and mix it up a bit with Taxi Driver and just add the Joker in with the idea of an “origin story” you basically get the “Joker” movie. They barely had to do any hard work on the plot

@@stevenmccallum4268 It is true that a lot of great movies have references and influences to previous films, but Todd Phillips just got a little bit too excited. I would like the movie better if the plot was more original.

I think this film is the best example of comedy/ drama. It funny with the jokes, but it's behind the laughter, that is the bleak drama that is realness.

abcun17 I was saying that he left the project before production began due to other obligations most likely related to his new movie The Irishman, he’s no longer involved with Joker.

I'm late to watching this movie. Known of it and finally watched it and again. Uncomfortable to watch yet entertaining, pitiful. The reception scene when Rupert is waiting to see Jerry is disturbing and claustrophobic. The whole movie is one of those that come along and it is near perfect. Jerry Lewis is brilliant. The whole cast just clicked for me personally.

@WorleyClarence Sure it counts, but I think (my personal opinion) that a movie is generally regarded as coming "from" the year it's released wide in the country of its origin. Go to most any movie listing on IMDB or Wikipedia, and it'll show a movie's origin year according it its release in its originating country.
PS. I say "most", because in The King of Comedy's case, it switches between 1982 and 1983, though 1983 is the predominant year on most listings, be it DVD or movie listings site.

This film, I think is a satire about people like the already established comedian played by Gerry Lewis who won't give another person a chance. It turns out that De Niro character in the film is a good comedian after all. It reminds me of people in my own life experience that have made it, become coveted and unwilling to let you get a foot in the door ...
