- I was a big fan of Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Jason Reitman’s film skillfully blended nostalgia with a new take on the franchise that opened up the Ghostbusters universe in an inclusive way. It welcomed new fans without alienating old ones, something the 2016 reboot notoriously failed at. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire seems to aim to build the franchise out more extensively. But, does planting so many seeds for future growth hamper the film? Find out in our review!

Felt this was the best Ghostbusters since 1989. Afterlife is just a goddamn remake without much comedy and nothing new; this one did actual new shit.
I see it like this: The first movie has a tough job of getting everyone on board, old and new, and drawing on all of those elements at the same time in one movie. Yes, it did obviously LITERALLY rehash stuff verbatim in a way where it wasn't even trying to hide it, but it did introduce some new ways of looking at the franchise at the same time, old and new. The first movie has to be sacrificed in order to open the gateway to new ideas, and now we are here with Frozen Empire. I'm always okay with first movies of this sort (like Force Awakens) being a rehash, as long as it can catapult the rest of the movies into what they need to be. I will not give that same benefit of the doubt if it isn't executed well in the second movie and paid off at the last. I haven't seen Frozen Empire yet, but it looks like they are trying to bring The Real Ghostbusters to life and do something fresh and exciting. I feel like I will like this a lot.
@@NKWTI Yes it makes sense. There are lots of great ideas in the real Ghostbusters, monsters etc that they could draw on and put in the films in the same way the Marvel films did back when they were good, up to End Game.

@@16driver16 Yes its great it just picks up right where the second film has left stuff and Harold Ramis is in it as Ego and its the original gang doing their stuff and its pretty funny thanks to the character of Venkman. He is the same bloke taking the mick and quipping away, Ramis is serious and into the science and gets some great one liners as well and Ackroyd is Ray, totally into the job and loving every second of it and the world of ghosts and dealing with them. Its an utter blast....
I'm hoping this one does well enough for them to want to continue the Ghostbusters franchise. It's up to us fans to help make it successful enough to give them enough of a chance to cook with the ideas they have. I would love more Ghostbusters films.
@@user-cf6kr4ry8d I am torn about this. I enjoyed Afterlife as it was a fitting tribute and sort of tie up, conclusion if you like to the original film. It was the third film we had waited decades for. And it was a big F.U. back to the truly awful Ghostbusters 2016 remake no one wanted. I was hoping this new film would expand and improve on that and start to give us the grounding for a new set of films Ghostbusters for the 21st Century. But I had my doubts as the writing today is terrible, as are the current crop of so called comedians. In this video, what I laughed at and enjoyed the most was the footage of Ackroyd and Murray together from the original films. Stuff I have never seen. Out takes from the original or whatever that was shown in America and living in England I have never seen it. When he says its Pg and I am Effing telling you!!! That made me laugh the most. I miss those chaps, and that time and the original film, it was so much fun.
What would be interesting if they made another one set in the 80s, so you got all the madness of the fashion and music of the decade, it just feels right for a Ghostbusters movie...

The first two Ghostbusters (1984 & 1989) are from a different era. An era of talent, where people could come up with an original idea. Does anyone in Hollywood have a shred of creativity left in them?
Funny you say that when a lot of people including Bill Murray think Ghostbusters 2 is a soulless rehash of the first film that lacks creativity and doesn't do much that's unique.

@@Xavier.living.life. I think what he is getting at, is the first two were 80s movies. And they look it. And sound it. They are 80s comedy films like Weird Science, National Lampoons, Trading Places, Caddyshack etc. They all had a look and a type of gentle comedy with wordplay and characters. And that was the 80s. Take that away and allow time to move on and things look and feel a lot different today. And no one in Hollywood is making new or original films like Ghostbusters was back then, or Poltergeist, or Predator, or Tron and so on, that sort of creativity and risk has gone totally.
I just miss the tone of the first two films. Nowdays it feels like you can't make jokes the same because it may offend someone.
I like how they are bringing in the Real Ghostbusters costumes and looks.
Biggest problem i have with the whole deal is now were gonna get back together after harold ramis is gone. they couldn't come to terms before that. that's what suck's.
They wasted decades and decades trying to make a third one, mainly Murray’s doing but now after they are all old and one has passed they pump out two in a 4 year span. Nobody wants to see this new team with a bunch of kids, it worked in Afterlife because of the plot but they shouldn’t be running around New York City taking up the mantle.
I really hate this new trend in Hollywood that is finally making sequels to movies we enjoyed but after the actors have aged well in to their 60s, 70’s, and 80’s such as the new Star Wars sequels and the latest Indiana Jones as well.
Murray had a huge falling out with Ramis during the shooting of Groundhog Day. Obviously Murray tried to avoid working with Ramis again. So since Ramis died Murray already appeared in 3 Ghostbusters movies.
My thing is 1) Should have made it more like the Justice Society comics wherein the old guard is actively training and working equally in tandem with the New. 2) Where is Oscar? Wonder what Dana's kid is doing now. Did he grow up with Peter as a stepdad?
Such a missed opportunity to not have Oscar. I would have expected that the old guard was training them in this.
The main and only real issue with this franchise is that it is no longer made for adults as the original was. Now it’s kid friendly that’s where it goes bad

I like how they have went for something different this time with the threat, Garraka looks dam scary but I reckon they will bring back Vigo and the slime the next time to give him a twist on his Ghost character not touched upon in Ghostbusters 2.
I like the afterlife remake as it was just the right amount of nostalgia and new storyline. Problem is how many times can they do a film that has mass potential to go bad.

@@kinglear6150 well I didn't mean to use remake but I wasnt sure how to describe it butleaned heavy on first one but not in a bad way. Sometimes when they make these I was worried that are they going too far with it and it turns into where that gets too forced into storyline. But again, i liked the afterlife one.

From what I’ve read and seen, it looks like a live action The Real Ghostbusters. Whilst I think it needs to forge ahead with its own thing. Afterlife was brilliant for me and mailed the nostalgia, but this doesn’t need to be the case for every film.

I thoroughly enjoyed the return to NYC and the introduction of new characters potentially paving the way for Ghostbusters spinoffs. After a prolonged absence, it was refreshing to see the Ghostbusters franchise revitalized with new films. The incorporation of new ghosts and Winston's team added an exciting dimension to the movie, although I wished they had been given more screen time.
However, one aspect that left me wanting was the lack of sufficient character development. I had anticipated a darker tone, perhaps even the demise of one of the original Ghostbusters like Ray. I had hoped for more intensity, especially in Winston's laboratory scenes. The romantic subplot involving Phoebe and the ghost felt somewhat forced to me. Additionally, the conclusion of the movie felt rushed; I had envisioned a more prolonged climax with the possibility of characters meeting their demise.
Despite these critiques, I still found the film enjoyable and would certainly watch it again. The abundance of Ghostbusters Easter eggs scattered throughout added to the overall charm of the movie.
there was only one last camio they had to make to get Afterlife 100% perfect. Even if for a split second........
Excited for Frozen Empire, hopefully its an all NEW storyline with new bad guys.
I got so excited when you said William Atherton is in it. My mind started racing thinking about some of the hilarious scenarios they might create between him and Bill Murray. And then I got to 2:03. 😖 WHY?!!

Im big fan of the 80s movies and I love the work to continue this franchise to new generation . Actually love more Frozen Empire than Afterlife .
My thoughts too.
Afterlife became a "feel good movie" so I definitely agree with what you are saying. Yet, right now, they still have hype & momentum from it, so we can't blame them for putting out another even if it falls short of the franchise expectations.
The firehouse was supposedly a starbucks accordinf to Ray in afterlife, butnit kept the containment unit in tact for 40 years.
A fair and good review and thank goodness we have reviewers out there that can still do that and not say the word woke every 5 Seconds.

Reitman isnt really a blockbuster type film maker. Afterlife was definitely a deviation from his usual work. He can produce and oversee. Guys like him like new challenges.
All these remakes trying to recapture an era when we entertained for entertainments sake not to push social agendas

I mean the only real reason the last one felt decent was the respect it gave to the originals….it was heart felt, and after coming off of 2016 version…it was destined to be a superior film to that and it was….but when i look at afterlife now, which I’ve noticed alot of people agree when the honeymoon phase died down…it still wasn’t as good as the originals….its a very basic film so when u say its not as good as that im skeptical now

The problem with ghost busters reboots is that they started too big. There have been three world ending big bads now. It is kind of loosing it's juice. 1 and 2 made it work by adding new yorks history as a character. The last one bringing back gozer was a big mistake, it should have just been trying to stop zhuul who was getting more powerful. Keep it small, and work your way back up to world ending. Small stakes like character deaths are a better scale since once you go world ending, that leads to time travel or multiverse which always looses juice.
There was no reboot in 2016 and there was no Ghostbuster movie in 2016. In fact we were told in afterlife there hasn't been a ghost sighting in 30 years so there it is. Whatever that pile of garbage was in 2016 I'm not sure but it wasn't Ghostbusters.

I love AFTELIFE. They got so much right, but this review sums up my assumption from seeing the trailer.
In all fairness, they are all over their 80s. Isn´t it too much to ask them extra screen time? The problem here is how these movies are sold out. Full of frustrating expectations. Thanks for the video anyways!!

I mean Ghostbusters I and II were essentially SNL movies in spirit. Like Coneheads or something. Trying to make a more serious blockbuster out of Ghostbusters is missing the point.

Harsh critics for a Ghostbusters movie. Its Ghostbusters and just fun! The old and young had some great chemistry.
The movie sucked, it was boring. Blah...boring...not interesting...no emotion.
Also, you could have put spoiler alert in the title.

they "fast and the furious'd" Ghostbusters. Wish they'd have made it more gritty and "real" looking instead of this green screen CGI fest. It looks like every other generic MCU or Fast and Furious soul-less money grab. Bummer.
The new movies are meant to bring Ghostbusters to a new audience. I went to the movies to see Frozen Empire and I saw children excited about Ghostbusters which was beautiful. I feel like they took an episode of the animated series and made it into live action and added a bunch of extra crap.. too much extra crap. Ghostbusters is never going to be what it once was. I'm just glad they're making it for a new generation.
I felt the clever scientific and more dry humor from the originals was more present in this one then afterlife. Not that I did not enjoy afterlife. Also appreciated the fact it was back in the big city though I wish there was a lot more montages of ghost catching like the originals.

they should make another sequel, and then make a prequel, and then make a sequel to that but it's a prequel, and then one more sequel, and then a spin off on SciFi, and then one more sequel just to make sure the IP is nice and juiced to shit. And then do a reboot
Yikes lol. Honestly imo, if I was in charge of everything ghostbusters. I would have frozen empire let the OGs go. Establish the 2009 video game as GB3. make the last film for 2027-2028 which would be GB 6. And just have the franchise end for good
Didn’t really like Afterlife so might wait for streaming for this one. Might be in the minority but I’m not crazy about Bill Murry sure he’s funny but it seems like all this whole franchise depends on him, when it’s more Ackroyds baby. But that’s just me. Still love the content JoBlo produces!!!
I wasn’t a fan of Afterlife. It had none of the laugh out loud moments of the original. It had moments kids laughed at and adults laughed hysterically too. If this isn’t as good then I will hold off and wait for cable

The fact that J. Michael Straczynski had to publicly acknowledge he wasn't even asked for input on a film that was "inspired" by THE REAL GHOSTBUSTERS.
Seriously? WTF?! The man wrote some of the best episodes for RGB. Had he gotten a chance to work on this film, we might have gotten the Peoplebusters from FLIP SIDE to attack the gang! Imagine the living Spenglers finding out Egon's spirit turned evil and joined dark doppelgangers of Ray, Winston, and Peter to unleash holy hell on the living. They could've ditched the Oklahoma kids, even get Phoebe to interact with the ghost of Luis Tully to help stop the Peoplebusters. Through in some F-bombs, make the film R-rated... damn the potentials.😂❤
I'd love to have Vigo back. He was always the creepiest villain to me. Even though Wilhelm Von Homburg passed away. They could do something like they did with Harold.
Cant bring back vigo after gozer was the villain of afterlife. Create some new lore. Glad theyre using a new big bad. Hope theres a post credit that hints at an RGB villain like sam hain or boogeyman.

You have the original cast (Bill seems to care this time), they're back in New York... and the best you can do is keep the kids (why?), a bunch of pointless sub-plots... why is this movie even called Frozen Empire? nothing happens until the last 20 mins of the film. They need to put GB to rest... there is no vision.

As a life long ghostbusters fan I have to say watching the reviews before I seen this movie I was expecting disappointment but I seen it last night you guys and your arks you guys don’t know ghostbusters because ghostbusters movies have always been comity - si fi flicks with not much of arcs for anyone this was a good movie not the best but good
Not surprised the Afterlife cast of characters suck in this one too. Can anyone describe the personalities of "Podcast", "Lucky", or Mike from Stranger Things? Carrie Coon's character in Afterlife was: "pretty bad mom". Even Paul Rudd was boring. My hopes for this one were dashed the moment they announced the returning cast and the same creative team (Reitman/Kenan). Afterlife got a lot of mileage just for not being as awful as the 2016 dumpster fire, but it was not a good movie.
I agree. Afterlife only was good when the original guys showed up. Other than that it was just boring.

He’s great when he plays against type like in Welcome to Chippendales. Hollywood needs to give him better roles. He’s spoken out about how much he hates playing the same thing over and over.
I’m probably the only person who didn’t like “Afterlife.” It was so slow and painfully unfunny. To me, anyway. Comedies need to be snappier. Scenes go on way too long now.
I've heard reviews from others that attended the screening is that is was amazing. 🤷♂️

Ughh. Two many little stupid storylines, characters etc. Slapsticky, corny references to the other movies. Ghost girl, Fire boy, Little slimer scene, Singing old song? Not terrible, But only a few steps above the 16 movie.

The new Ghostbusters have way too many characters that are forgettable and the story is too kid friendly. The franchise is dead. Sony will soon learn after this film bombs.
Ghostbusters is a story about 4 dudes in their late 30s that are busting ghosts. Not a netflix stranger things ripoff about kids and their parents busting cartoon ghosts with supporting wacky side characters

I feel like I’m the only person on the planet that loved the 2016 Ghostbusters. That movie was so funny and enjoyable to me. Chris Hemsworth was hilarious and all the female leads were great and had such great chemistry. I actually liked it more than the OG ghostbusters movies. I know it’s blasphemy but it makes me laugh so much more than the OG. And especially that afterlife one.
Maybe I’m just old but I just don’t get the Phoebe love, she’s not particularly funny, doesn’t add much other than to be there to discover things and is just borderline autistic.
The kids hamstring the movie for me as they’re just not very funny at least for me. The humor in ghostbusters was genius as it was subtle and then as you get older you see how raunchy they were but it went over your head as a kid. The humor in these newer ones is just so surface.
Idk like I said maybe these new ghostbusters aren’t for me.
