    Who knew there's a guy out there that takes his time and pays attention to detail. Not too many of us out here with K series trucks and SM465 transmissions. Glad you're here to help. Thank you. Everyone has a honda video about their civic but this is awesome. Thanks for not half assing anything very helpful. I gotta fix the slop in my shifter. I put a heavy knob on it and I can really feel the extra play or wobble in the shifter.

    What an amazing video. You were so thorough with everything. Not having the right tools helps people that dont have a huge pile of pro tools.
    I came here because i have a 72c10 with this tranny, I think? Code option M20-4speed. I just wanted to know what entails a rebuild and honestly not sure if i would attempt it. You did make it easier to understand!
    One more thing, I literally cried when your son showed up with a bloody nose, the way your kid came up to you with the curiosity even though he had a bloody nose was amazing! You didnt go into drama mode either!
    It got me sentimental because that 72 chevy c10 I have, was my daughters. it was a truck i found on Craigslist and i intended to flip it but she got so into it so much i was going to give it to her and two weeks after, she passed away from a car accident, she was 13 not as young as your kid but your kid reminded me of my daughter when-she was his age, as she acted very similar. If one day I have the means financially to restore her truck, i’d
    Defintely come back to your videos. Thank you!

    I have to tackle this project...I am rebuilding a CJ7 and attching a 465 to a dana 300 (Ordered the Novak part). I've done lots of shade tree work, but never something like this....Your videos make this look extremely doable. Thank you for posting them! I'm just a bit less nervous now lol

    This video series has been extremely helpful, myself (and many others) really appreciate it. I just finished disassembling my SM465 this afternoon. Something I figured out on that front bearing that is in the way of removing the counter shaft, if you drive that bearing in towards the inside of the case, it will go all the way through and sit on the shaft out of the way. Then you can pull the counter shaft out, and the bearing just slips off the end. I had more trouble getting the rear bearing off the counter shaft then anything else.

    Yeah buddy!!! That front brg. be toasted! lol When you were removing it with your Improvised method which hey it worked and no harm no foul, I noticed a gap in the ball area??? Then you confirmed the missing pieces!! Damn that would be noisy!!
    Thank you for sharing your time and knowledge!! I have a couple of the SM465's & NP205's. Really appreciate your showing us all in case we need to rebuild them! BTW, I have some snap ring pliers like the ones you attempted to use on the front brg.. It looked like a similar prob. I had on an auto trans reb. I had to thin out or manipulate if you will the two tips. They were too meaty! Anyway in case you have more than one pair you can alter a pair!
    Thanks!!!!

    A factory service manual would say use tool #XXX-Z or suitable. This is why tool boxes bigger that a refrigerator still don't have all of the tools needed. And older product tools are missing because the guy quit and it left in his box! Suitable is what fits & works! Don't short yourself, ever if you get the job done.

    I just tore apart my SM465 with the help of this video. The bearing puller I bought on Amazon said it was for a 75-100mm bearing. But the radius was too small for anything near that size, and the threads were too short. I ended up grinding the edge to fit the 4 inch input bearing, and used a rod of 5/8 allthread, and it worked perfectly, to my Roadkill standards.

      Hey I really appreciate your asking! This project was drawing me away from the people who matter the most in my life. I was spending every evening and weekend after work in the shop on this truck. It was stressing my marriage bigtime as I was prioritizing this truck over quality time with my wife and sons so I wisely chose to shut down the project and sell it. It has been one of the best decisions I've ever made! I dream of running a shop full time with my boys and going full bore into this CZcams channel again but for now I will continue to answer questions and interact the best I can with you and all viewers! Again, thank you so much and God Bless!!

    Question.. in your last vid on installing the top cover you said to put tran in neutral an the reverse teeth need to catch the first gear. Did all that but i knocked the shifter out of the position while cleaning the surface on the top cover. Now she wont go back in. Any tips??? Thank you.

    • @GebBuilt

      Dan Read everything needs to be aligned in half reverse. Put the shifter in reverse then bump it halfway back up then the collars inside the transmission need to relate. Sometimes it requires a few tries and some patience. Thank you for your question, God bless!

    Enjoy your video.. I got a Novak adapter for my Dana 300 transfer case. This inspired my to attempt to install it.. I'm stuck on the output shaft bearing. I remove the slip rings and am using your example to get it off but it won't come off the output shaft. the bearing comes out of the case but I can't get it off the shaft. You use a air hammer but that just pushes the bearing back into the case. Should I use heat or is there another way to get it off?

    • @GebBuilt
      @GebBuilt  Před 8 lety

      Sorry for the delay- my wife and I recently introduced baby Geb #4 into the world! After being an ag and heavy equipment mechanic for many years I've become very partial to my air hammer. I'd say the proper way to pull this bearing would be with the appropriate sized clamshell bearing puller. If it is frozen to the shaft then I'd grab the oxy ace torch and carefully shave the inner race off of the shaft. Hope these pointers help, God bless sir!!

    Hey geb, thanks for the videos, they're great. I had a question and thought I'd ask here. In the ten spline coupler there is a snap ring offset in the inside. Does that face the transfer case or tranny when installed? Also there is a side on the coupler that has two notches any idea what they are for or which direction they go? My guess is that the snap ring in the coupler is offset to force one of the input/output shafts against the case, but it fits both ways. Any help is appreciated. Thank you

      @david jackson - I'm also trying to figure out a noise on my truck that I've narrowed down to those two sources. Videos on my channel. Did you have any luck figuring yours out?

    I have a noise around 50-55mph in an SM465. When i slightly let off throttle in 4th gear i hear a whining noise. Any thoughts?

    • @GebBuilt
      @GebBuilt  Před 2 lety

      That’s a good question. They are somewhat whiney transmissions by nature but if this is a new development in yours then there’s probably an issue. I really don’t have much input other than to start checking slop in the yokes then probably pull side covers then top cover to find the problem. By then it’s probably time to go through it anyway.

    hey @gebbuilt what kinda noise does it make when this front bearing is gone?

    • @GebBuilt
      @GebBuilt  Před 2 lety

      Mine was a rough sound. I'd check immediately because if the bearing shucks it can do more damage.

    HELP!!’ I’ve got one that’s making me pull my hair out. Hangs intermittently in 4th gear especially after applying a little torque like climbing a gentle hill and then trying to come to a stop. All other gears shift fine. If it sits a bit, it’ll come out of gear just fine. I can take the top off and get it out of gear with a couple of screwdrivers. Gears all appear to be in good shape. New clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing, and flywheel surfaced. Motor has less than 500 miles on a fresh build. New pilot bushing when I built the engine. Any help appreciated.

      @GebBuilt  Před 2 lety

      I’d say it’s the transmission’s turn for rebuild.

    so i just bought a 1984 C20 2WD that has a leak on the tailshaft that i didn't know about and the other day i heard a wierd noise so i checked the fluids (thats when i noticed the leak) and it took quite a bit of fluid and now its making a loud humming noise and i didn't know if i should rebuild it

    I’m having a lot of trouble with the adjustment on my Z bar to the shift fork, I have had to make a longer custom adjustment bolt and I’ve had to make it longer and longer within a month, way past stock, I have no idea what is going on but it isn’t good, the clutch doesn’t engage to shift from a stop into 1st gear half the time and I have to just keep adjusting it further. HELP

    • @GebBuilt
      @GebBuilt  Před 2 lety +1

      Great question. It sounds like your clutch fork is bending. I've had it happen before too. It bends at the socket end where your pushrod goes in. I've modified those myself by welding reinforcement to the back side of the socket, or you can get a performance clutch fork. another issue could be the Z bar pivots - make sure there isn't too much slop there. I hope this helps out, if this is not the problem then I'd say it's time for a new full clutch assembly. God bless and enjoy your truck!
