Same boat as you friend, I also recent got into all the O&A stuff thru patrice, and you hit the nail on the head. Opie is never the funniest in the room, but he was essential to keeping the show afloat. I think most people hate him cuz he threw ant under the bus and acted kinda jealous, but really I think it’s because you know people love to kick someone while they’re down, and they love to have someone they can hate
If you listen to enough O and A you’ll understand why. Jim and Ant are hilarious but Opie doesnt really add any comedic value to the show. Hes not very funny, or witty and cant take a joke when its about him.
@@DCannon521 and he’ll go to callers instead of letting the show roll with all the comedian guests. I didn’t really dislike him at first, but when I re-listen to the old shows a lot of the time opie talks is just him trying to be wacky. He isn’t worth his stay.
There's nothing wrong with liking Opie and not noticing how annoying he can be, that's how we all used to be too. It's just a thing you realize and learn more about the more you get into O&A, but it's a great show and by all means enjoy it with or without Opie.

Imagine hating opie this much. I won’t deny opie was one of the weakest links, but he was an integral part of the show and he did a lot for the show. There is no ant, or all the patrice content without ope and to remove him from all the conversations just cuz you have hatebner for him is some weird Soviet style stuff. It’s just doesn’t jive and it’s inferior to listening to the whole unedited show.

He did nothing. He would watch a clock and go to subjects, that Travis and Sam Roberts pre prepared for him, at predetermined times come hell or high water, no matter what funny riffing was going on. He doesn’t even steer the ship well, just starts yelling “hold on hold on” as a lazy Segway. This clip in particular gets ruined by HOURS of awful fan remixes that Opie just insists on going to even though the whole room isn’t laughing. A case in real time of high functioning autism and getting lucky professionally
I feel so bad about this, like doing this to a person is the meanest thing ever. Then the more I listen, the more I enjoy it, which makes me feel worse when I think about it later.
When Opie gets edited out, it highlights so many of the show's strong points. Like Patrice's infectious laughter, or how well Ant/Jim or Ant/Patrice play and bounce off one another, or how quick they are to come up with another observation or insult. Then in the middle of it, you hear the sound of some stranger chuckling along with it, like on a podcast when an off mic crew member laughs. So I'm enjoying the banter, but then somewhere deep inside a voice goes, "Oh, damn, yeah, that's a person with easy access to this. Ouch."
Some of the classic bits really need him edited out. If he was doing this show by show, then you'd have a point.
How hilarious that Jimmy thought if he actually hit a woman, he could do it hard enough to knock teeth out. No woman ever backed off bitching at Jimmy because they were afraid of pushing him to violence. Any adult woman could decimate Jimmy's tiny, weak body.
