  • In this video Mortske and Duff show you how to release a stuck park brake cable. While this will allow your wheel to turn freely, your park brake will no longer function unless you replace the parking brake cables.

Thank you for sharing your technique Our 2013 Kia Soul sat for a week in the mid-May heat in SE Ohio, and when we returned, we couldn't release the parking brake. The car wouldn't roll, but dragged one wheel along the ground. Jacked it up, attempted to remove the wheel, but couldn't. and after trying a rubber mallet, switched to a sledge hammer and tapped around firmly, until the wheel started to rotate freely once again. I was worrying about hiring a tow truck to drag it out of our narrow, walled driveway to a shop for major repairs. We still have to get that wheel off to replace the tire eventually (tire tread is worn but not gone...NOT as a result of this issue) but we can do it at a time of OUR choosing. Thanks again for showing us what you did.

Regardless of being an automatic, parking brakes are req for inspection and should still be used. Particularly if parking on a slope. Especially on these older GM's (4t60E) the park pawl is only secured to shifter cable by a tiny C-clip and can shear right off. Now your looking into tearing into the trans for what was relatively simple brake work. When it comes to parking brakes, you don't use them you'll lose them.

An automatic NEEDS a parking brake unlike a manual vehicle which WANTS a parking brake. An automatic vehicle CANNOT be stopped in the event of major brake failure unless it has a parking brake. A manual vehicle can just be engine braked by downshifting or shutting the ignition off. If you have no parking brake and the hydraulic pressure is lost on an automatic car, point yourself uphill and try to use the gear selector on the automatic transmission if it is even equipped with a low range

I use the parking brake on my 2014 Dodge Avenger with 6 speed automatic most of the time for a couple reasons. First because I thought it should be used to keep it in good working condition. Second because it seems like it takes most of the stress off of the transmission any time the car is parked on an incline.

If you genuinely want to free a seized handbrake cable, take it off the vehicle, hang it up by one end and seep diesel fuel down into the bowden until it drips out of the other end. Then work the cable back and forth until running freely. Chances are, the bowden has a split that's allowed water in and rusted the inside causing the cable to be pinched. Diesel cleans and lubricates. Grease over the split then wrap with tape.

Most garages will too because their customers wouldn't pay the labour cost spent on freeing a cable. I just enjoy the satisfaction of making parts work properly. I've actually only ever had to free x3 cables, a twin set on a Nisaan about 35 years ago and recently on a Picanto. The Picanto's replacement would have been $100 but diesel freed the existing one up nicely.

When I shifted from Park to Reverse, the E brake is supposed to release. Well, this time it never released. I had to tow it to a tire place, and they just said there was nothing they could do. What the hell?? So they ended up cutting it and when I drove away, I heard this loud clunk every time I applied the brakes. The classic car was never the same. What was the loud clunk?

I do some light mechanical work on my own car so I took the drum off and discovered that the cables were cut. I know these were not cut before because I had seen them. This means someone at a shop I took the car to cut the cables and cost me a lot of money to restore them so I could pass inspection.

(I was watching him but toddlers will be toddlers lol)The break light is on on the dash. And now I’m scared to drive it and work in 2 days…. Idk what to do. I’ve checked fuses and e break and reset the battery and everything…I also get a notice to “service electronic breaking system” is there something I’m missing?! I don’t understand. It's not just a parking brake. It's an emergency brake to use in the event your hydraulic brakes goes out. Now the driver has no way of stopping in the event that happens. The worst thing to have ever happened with cars was to call emergency brakes "parking" brakes. People forget their true intended use. It ain't for parking.

The best way to release stuck parking brakes is try to reverse the car in reverse gear which has better and greater gear ratio than 1st gear. It should release atleast on one side if it doesnt take a hammer and make sure you hit the drum at 9 o clock and 3 o clock position , it will release I have succeeded tens of times in40 years of observation, dismantle and lubricate with gear oil once a year soon after rains

The video says how to repair the stuck emergency brake not how to cut it and disconnect it. Emergency brakes are needed when starting from a dead stop with a manual transmission on a steep hill, so you don't roll into car behind you when applying the clutch. In flat states like Illinois, you don't really need it for automatic transmissions .
