      Glad to hear you like it!
      Do keep in mind though. Game development is not easy. Some small parts here and there can be easy in their own small scope, but most things are quite involved.
      So most tutorials that show things "the easy way" is actually doing it in a bad way that if you followed, it will make it hard or impossible to finish a game using those ways.

    Thank you! The great Idea. And it looks like this approach is significantly better and less resouce consuming than post processing-based.
    Also, I've added UPROPERTY "Selected" to my Character and modified the blueprint, so it changes material depending on this property value. Now, after I added mouse picking -- I can easily highlight character that I've clicked on.

      Although a post process material can be rendered / stencilled - to give the classic 'outline' of occluded mesh technique? - I guess you could do the same only with the overlay material?

      @@MIKELENZTIPS This falls a little bit in the category of "what can you do with materials" in which I am quite weak. I answer is I do believe so, but I would make sure verify that answer from a more reliable source.

    Thank you so much for this video! I didn't know there was such a feature as overlay material until I looked it up. Very convenient, your material will also come in handy. And the main thing is that it’s easy and the result is exactly what i expect.

    The overlay material seems to not be working on light-baked static meshes. Any idea?

    Very cool :) But unfortunately doesn't work well for UE5 since Nanite STILL doesn't support translucency...although hopefully we'll see that one day

      This works fine on 5.2, but you probably have reasons to use 5.0. In any case, you can try opening the project in 5.2; it may work fine in a later version of the engine.

      @@slumsnake1303 Nanite does not support translucency still even in 5.3, unless I've missed something

      @@cgkrab I missed this point because I don't use nanite. There are many problems with it, not only with transparency, but also with FX. On the other hand, it is indispensable if there are a lot of high-poly models in the scene. Luckily I only work with low poly and don't have to work with nanite. If you have a choice, I don't recommend using it at all.

      This is available in 5.1, so if you are ok with upgrading to that version - you can have it there.

      It depends. If it listens to input, then just do what I showed in the tutorial on that input event.Otherwise you can use either an event dispatcher/event/function to relay the input to the object in question.

    Can you guide the overlay for the alembic file, my overlay works properly on the fbx file but the alembic file doesn't work

    I can't seem to get overlay materials to work on 2d sprites. Is there a reason why and/or a way to make it work?

      The material I created in the tutorial works on geometry, a sprite doesn't really have geometry.

      @@Neuromindart You can always create your own material with its own functionality to have it behave however you want it.

      Any effect that you can achieve within the material itself, I assume you can make use of for this.

I would like to make a game using the ActionRPGStarterSystem that I have from epic, but I can't change my character (metahuman) into a dummy. Can you make a tutorial on how to get it? I would be very grateful

      I am not familiar with this actionRPGstarter system. So not sure how it is setup. But you should be able to just replace the skeletal mesh.

    Hi, Do you have a way to make it black? I'm trying to edit this to be more along the lines of a Borderlands -style edge highlights, but i cant get it to be black

      The visuals all come down to the material itself. So if you want to achieve a specific look, it will have to be done in the material.

      @@LeafBranchGames I know, but I guess my question is more how I might go about having a black glow since mathematically adding a black glow is technically impossible, but there are of course ways to do it anyway, I just don't know how
      I played around with the material settings a lot, but if I ever add black or a dark color, the entire material goes invisible

      @@CobaltTS I don't know what the borderlands style highlights look like, I assume it is some sort of cell shading type of pencil strike-look. I am not the best to learn material effects from. I know some materials, but it is definitely not one of my strengths. But surely someone must have created some similar material effect and made a tutorial for it.

    At 5:56, once I plugged mine into the oppacity and rendered the shaders, it all dissapeared. There's no outline or anything. Did I do something wring or did the last Unreal Update change a punch of stuff BTS again?

      I don't know if any changes has been made to the functionality in subsequent versions of the engine. You can try and use the same version as in the tutorial and if the problem persists.

      ​@@LeafBranchGames On my end instead of taking the multiply output, and instead using the Fresnel output for opacity solves this issue for me in 5.2

      @@LeafBranchGames Overlay material is disable if base mesh is nanite on. Need to check “disallow nanite” 😭
