- A montage consisting of footage borrowed from the excellent Sea-Angler Mastercast VHS (1996) with John Wilson, in which Neil demonstrates and gives instructional commentary on the pendulum cast that enabled him to reach the very pinnacle of world casting.
In his competitive days Neil was UKSF Champion seven times,World Champion three times and held numerous distance records and other titles including that of UK Sportscast Champion.
These credentials ensured Neil's place in castings 'hall of fame' and allied to his subsequent successful career as a journalist, tackle consultant and all round angling personality have confirmed his status as a true legend of our great sport. - Sport
Today we lost Neil. Surely the greatest caster ever. RIP Neil you were and still are an insiration to so many. G'bye big man.
I remember. Was sad. This past December 2020 Phil Hyde past away also. Such great guys. 🙏
you all probably dont care at all but does someone know of a way to get back into an Instagram account??
I was stupid lost my password. I would appreciate any tips you can give me
@Brady Kaiser instablaster :)
Let Jesus learn the casting from John I’m sure he’ll do fine fishing for the lord up above!
I met Neil about 25 years ago on the beach near New Romney we got chatting and he gave me a few pointer and let me have a few casts setting my technique up better, great guy and no hesitation in offering advice. I think hexwas testing prototype rodsxatvthe time
One casting video, and three legends all gone, R.I.P neil mackellow, john wilson and Terry Carol,
Found this by accident....I've not been a fisherman for many years as I gave up after having everything stolen...I can remember fishing with my father almost 60 years ago and he was happy with 50 meter cast , I always tried for more and back in the day a 100 meter with weight and bait to try for , don't think I ever got over 120 meters and that was in the 70s not too bad with the kit we had back then and teaching ourselves, Now with the latest equipment, the internet to learn from and to see masters of rod like this gentleman, sad to see he has passed, But will always be remembered thanks to CZcams and the internet...
Every time I see this video I feel melancholy. His trajectories were so sinuous and clean. He seemed to do everything effortlessly. Truly a master caster!
Todo cast en una sola persona...Sos y serás el mejor BIG MAN...Todo sigue siendo perfecto .....Gracias por todo!!!
Still to this day, the greatest ever. Silky smooth. R.I.P. Bud. X
I had the great pleasure of competing against Neil in the seventies a true Gentleman and truly great champion who had time for everyone..
RIP Big man
This is a great video using overheads on surf rods is very very rare here in Australia I saw an Australian fishing icon named rex hunt do this here wen I was 14 I'm 43 now and I haven seen it since my 16yo son is a pro fisherman and loves baitcasters and oveheads has over 200 rods and reals spinners too I told him what I saw on tv wen I was younger and hen just bought himself a Shimano Calcutta 700b and a Shimano t-curve 13 foot rod and I just shared this with him thankyou bloke from Australia and may you rest in peace you were a fisher of men a good guy teaching the old ways best teaching video on you tube for this type of fishing
So sad to hear that he passed away. I knew him when I lived in the UK in Eastbourne. My god he could cast a hell of a distance. R.I.P.
El primero con su técnica,un faro para quienes nos gustó llegar bien lejos,un abrazo a sus seres queridos desde Argentina
Master of casting, genuine gentleman.
Saw Neil many times when we were fishing the Bristol Channel for Cod, when he turned up we would say here comes The Cod man as he would pull fish out all the time. Nice guy who would chat with us very humbly and once told us that all the distance casting was down to technique and you could cast a weight a good distance just using a broom shank and an Abu real. We were always amazed at how far he would cast and with no effort at all considering his size. RIP mate
Rip Neil and John
I remember watching this many years ago. I was fortunate to meet both of these angling legends more than once. They will never be forgotten. They ruled the 80's and 90's and brought anglers into the 21st century with their techniques.
What a Great Video to be remembered by! Modern Casting owes this man a great deal! RIP Neil Mackellow
I like the sound of the reel very much!!
From time to time I watch this excellently made and clearly detailed video from one of the all time and undisputed masters of beach casting.
When I first wanted to start learning to long cast, I met a man in USA who was friends with Neil. Neil mailed me a free upgrade part to my reel and we talked while his buddy helped teach me. Neil is the nicest guy ever and I was unaware what a commenter below said about his condition and i will look into helping him to give back to him.
I knew Neil, I'm not going to say we were friends but you have to respect what this man did for fishing. He was the inspiration for a lot of the top match anglers casting on the south coast and if they deny this, Well. Whatever he did and there was various exploits he did his way, So here's to you Neil, yiu show them lads and lasses up there how to swing the lead. Rip
Great man, now sadly in ill health......read his articles as a kid, spoke to him a few times when starting out many years ago and watched his videos over and again in an attempt to perfect the pendulum cast, one of the very best and a giant in his field, good luck to you Neil.
the sound the reel makes on the cast is insane, thats some really high RPM
L'essenza di un lancio. Fluidità e tecnica. Un grande esempio di stile e armonia nei suoi gesti... e visto dal vivo è ancor più impressionante.
Thank you Neil.
Just found out Neil passed away about 12 months ago. RIP Neil, you improved my casting through your articles in Sea Angler magazine. I will always be grateful
RIP Neil You were an inspiration to us all
Starai Lanciando su spiagge immense....con stile. Master !!
That cast is a thing of beauty.
Neil, one of the very best, a pleasure to watch him cast, he makes it look so easy, but whatan inspiration for aspireing casters. great little film to watch, very informative. :-)
Many thanks, Les.
Remember seeing him casting once. Even at a young age I was completely blown away by his casting. RIP proper fishing legend
Thanks for uploading this, I live on the Great Lakes and there is nobody I've ever seen, who casts this well or explains it this well, thanks again.
An absolute legend, a giant of a man when it came to casting and popularity there was no-one like him.
His casts just flew into the distance.
Another idol of mine from many moons ago was
Les Moncrief, Another great sea angler and caster, if I remember correctly i think he was the first one to cast a hundred yards + and i also believe he achieved this kneeling down.
Gone but never forgotten.
Passed away this morning R.I.P. Blackbeard
The artist at work!

Very clear video. So many variations of the pendulum but not everyone is built like Neil.Height I mean!!..And a nice guy too.
Awesome video, had and still have the original vhs brilliant to see like this..
Pity that the "owners" of said original haven't re released it on dvd with the proceeds perhaps to help Neil in this time of difficulty.....
IF THATS TRUE THEY ARE PIGS IVE NEVER HEARD A BAD WORD ABOUT HIM A GENT
The BluBlockers make all the difference.
Fuiste un gran maestro...
my favourite caster
Bought original video great to see it again, two fishing greats R I P.
Un grande, unico!!!!
Back in the 80's when I was involved in Beach Casting competitions, this swing was known as the Yarmouth Back Swing sorry to hear of his state of health
The punch pull javelin cast that you outline I have found to be not only the most intuitive but the best. Some guys are now advocating for fully extending both arms and say you should only pull with your outer arm. They also appear to swing coming around from the side instead of when the javelin is pointed 45 degrees up from the intended target. I find your instructional to be the best out there and the most effective for the pendulum cast.
We are still looking.
What a legendary man
thank you Neil RIP
Legend has it that the sinker landed somewhere in Nevada.
The sound of that cast is awesome! Sounds like launching. a rocket
RIP, a true fishing legend:~(
muito bom! tenho aprendido muitocom estes videos
Un maestro total que buenos tiros y su técnica es brillante Saludos desde argentina!
I love that noise Pzzzzzzzzzz
grazie zio neil !!!!
Pretty cool. I have yet to get a 600 ft cast but I am coming close with an occasional one in the 590s. It's pretty amazing that these guys are getting another 120 to 150 feet past this. I like the way he changes the mag brake setting as the line rolls out. I can't get this down at all. Never try to stop the spool with your thumb at thse spool speeds. You will lose skin.
are there any videos of the 600 ft plus casts?
lol my bad meant ft
Thanks you so muchnesses
to the infinite and beyond !!!
Neil is really master cast, number one of style!
You would love an AVET MXL MC reel and a custom rod from Seeker. These blanks are tough as nails, composite Glass/Carbon. They have a 15 foot blank 2-8 oz. for about 180 bucks, plus seat, guides, grips, and labor. (Which I do, BTW) The Avet will set you back around 260, but they're totally machined and assembled from start to finish in America! I have the AVET LX MC 6.0. I surfaced a 300 pound stingray at Cape Hatteras in October from the pier. It brought in 50 lb. ones like brim! 3 minutes!
0:13 THIS IS SPARTAAAA!
Neil en paz descanses capo...
I just bought a actual neil mckellow 525 with the 12 magnets. Its a amazing reel.
Most of my best fish have been caught within anything between 5yrds and 50 yrds off the shoreline, its not always necessary to be casting to the horizon, its a useful skill if you can cast long distances like Neil demonstrates in this very informative video, but don't be fooled into thinking that the fish are always 180 yrds out.
You won't cast 180 with bait
il più grande ed unico interprete della tecnica di lancio !!!
RIP Neil MacKellow:(
RIP Neil
R.I.P. Big man
If you're going to attempt to do the pendulum cast with a spinning reel make sure to use a casting trigger. I got cut real good when I tried to hold the line with my finger! You can get a real nice casting trigger on ebay for like $11. I think the one I got was from hypertackle or something.
The Big man a great man rip
Fantastic !! a very very powerful man , I have just got back into field casting and have lots of abu 6500 conversions, has anybody else got a Benfield conversion on abu 6500 ?
It could take the energy out if you get the timing wrong. If you get it right that energy is stored in the bend of the rod and you get it back in the final motion.
You're right about being able to cast it the other way but you won't get quite the distance though it'll still be a respectable cast.
best of the best r I p Neil
what an EPIC way to end the video!!:)
topvid!!
Thanks you my Teacher’s
Nice!!!!
Still 1 of the best
Im learning this cast myself and although ive had a few wild moments with direction, i doubt you can hit yourself in the head. If you think your using a 12ft rod with a 6-8 ft drop of line, momentum will always be pushing the lead away from you. Try it as im finding it all down to smoothness and confidence im sure you will to.
exelente . para digitalizar
breakaway sinkers , good aero dynamic ,hold on sand, and protect your bait from breaking because the power of the cast. they are a lil pricy use it in a sandy beach so it wont get stuck .
is this a pendulum cast all other vids i have seen hit it on the forward swing
i have never done this but i would like to learn
hi leslie thanks for your comment , i bought a Lineaeffe JD 500 Multiplier Boat Sea Fishing Reel of ebay, so no information on how to use it, why i have been watching casting videos on youtube here to see if can get some information, been watching and reading few things by john holden and how to put weight inside of a tennis ball , so going to go out in big field and give it a go, was checking few fishing forums for lessons cant find anyone near to where i live , thanks
Neil must have been a strong bloke the way he held the rod at the very end of of the butt as if it weighed nothing. Great video.
YES, he's caught more fish than you can shake a bloody big stick at, and probably one of the best casters you will ever see, so learn, and learn well, from a master. :-)
