Wow, excellent lesson. Everything makes sense now. I have made hundreds of bowls, yet spindle turning freaked me out, but you explain everything so clearly I can't wait to get started.

Man, i just bought a jet mini lathe and I like to make mallets, so I decided to turn one. I have never used a wood lathe before. I couldn’t even use a gouge. After getting it close I used sandpaper to get it to down to the right size and even it out. But boy it is so much nicer. I even put some beads in it. I decided to look on CZcams to see if I could learn how to use the chisels and what they are for. Well, I have been looking at your videos for 6 hours. You have a great way of teaching because I have learned so much. I have enjoyed each video and it is midnight so I am going to come tomorrow to watch more. But I can’t wait to try more techniques. I think I will be able to use a gouge now. I can’t wait. Thank you so much. I think you have helped me a great deal. These videos are great.

I am a self taught turner, mostly because there are no clubs or local turners that I can go to for info. I watched a ton of videos and read all I could get on the subject before buying my first lathe. I want to thank you personally Mike, and certainly a few others for your videos. Your's was one of the first that I started watching to learn tool technique, etc, and it helped me tremendously, especially showing ways around tools, i.e., hand made tools, home made chucks, etc., to not break the bank, so to speak. One day maybe I'll meet some of y'all in person. I live in the SW part of Ga. and don't get up around your neck of the woods much. Thanks again for the refresher Mike. Happy turnings!

Exactly what I need. I took classes at Woodcraft on bowl turning and then on the skew before buying my lathe. This is the kind of refresher I need and it's just the right length. Thank you!
I found a cheaper wood source: the year old pine branches that fell in my yard. The bark is off & I can just split them to size.
Watch out for all of that sap! I am planning a complete Beginning Woodturning series that might interest you.

you know i really like these videos your doing mike . im still kinda new to turning and there are no wood turning clubs by me that i know of . so everything i learn i learn off youtube . you always give great tutorials and walk people through things .thats a right smart looking camera man you got there to buddy . have a great day my friend

I keep returning to this video as it is very helpful -- your comment regarding practice as in musical instrument practice is spot-on. Biggest issue I'm having lately is avoiding skate-back while turning beads -- this is causing me significant grief. More detail on where exactly the twist, lift & swings occur would be helpful
The key is moving to maintain bevel support near the cutting edge. When that bevel comes off the wood is when you get a skate back
@@MikePeaceWoodturning I think I figured it out. I was entering the cut with the point of the gouge, although a cut was starting, it was not always sufficient to maintain bevel support when turning the bead. Watching your video and others, I finally got the fact that one doesn't enter the cut with the point, but at an angle. That seems to have solved my problem. Hopefully others find that helpful.

Thanks Mike for a great tutorial on using standard turning tools. I’ve been turning with carbide tools and this is very helpful for my transition to traditional tools. Now off to practice the correct techniques. Thanks again Mike. Cheers, Tom

Another fine video, Mike. Glad I found it. I have been a subscriber for a long time, but recently, notifications have stopped working entirely. Maybe it's just my PC, but CZcams is no longer sending notifications for new videos on the channels to which I subscribe.

I have used this video to help me begin to learn my spindle skills. I have a problem making the left-hand side of my bead look like my right (I'm right-handed, so everything is easier on that side). My left sides wind up with a straighter angle and require more manicuring. Suggestions of a video of yours that addresses this tendency?
Practice. But if you are getting a flat sided bead, you are not swinging your handle out in the final third of the cut when the bevel should be ending perpindicular to the piece. You are just pushing the cut in a straight line. Hope that helps.

Almost a fingernail grind that spindle gouge, are those also labelled as "detail-gouges"? The wings on your spindle is ground far more back than my spindle gouge, I had some problems with mine, they catch easy if I cut to steep of an angle, so I use my parting tool for that, but I just feel like not scraping is not the right way to do it. any advice?
I messed around with woodturning some years ago, but I gave up due to bad tools, previous owner had them ground really bad and I had to start over and figure out the right angles etc. - some time ago I decided to take it up again and I bought a few of those crown tools, a roughing gouge and diamond parting tool. Glad I didn't sell off the lathe, its a really good one.
How far you sweep back is a personal preference but the greather the sweep, the pointier the tool. I am using a standard Thompson 3/8" spindle gouge that I do not consider swept back altho perhaps more than some ofther folks who also have an acceptable grind. It is milled 50% of the diameter deep. His detail gouge which I use for specialty cuts is more shallow at 33% and this tends to result in a pointier tool.
