Gavril Getaway: A BeamNG 70's-style car chase

I have loved making 1970s Hollywood-style car chase videos since the days of the original “Driver” on Playstation 1. Now, here is my most recent and advanced one made in the game BeamNG Drive. This is a fun short film following the getaway driver of a Gavril Gladiator, which is the name given in the game to the Dodge Coronet to avoid copyright issues. The action is inspired by the car chases of 60s and 70s movies, mostly in a general sense and in a few cases directly. I have referenced several classic car chase (or other) movies in this. How many can you spot? A list will be below.
I wrote and recorded an original song specifically for this film. You can listen to it here: • "Gavril Getaway: A bea...
Additionally, I used the copyright-free song “October," created by 95TurboSol: • "October" Song (Calm, ...
Just a heads up, I made a "spiritual sequel" to this. The link is at the end of the video or can be found here: • Vanishing Point: A Bea...
Movie References:
-The Gavril Gladiator is a re-badged Dodge Coronet. The white Coronet here is a reference to the white Challenger in “Vanishing Point” (1971).
-Also as in Vanishing Point, the main character is an anti-hero who meets his end on the road in a fiery crash.
-Vanishing Point was remade as a TV movie on Fox in 1997 starring Viggo Mortensen. In that version, a local sheriff chases the Challenger with his own personal Dodge Charger, saying that only a Mopar can catch another Mopar. Like here, that Charger also crashes and rolls over and over before ending on its roof.
-The hill jumps section is a reference to the classic chase scene from “Bullitt” (1968).
-The Mach 1 Mustang parked on the side of the road is a small nod to the original Eleanor from “Gone in 60 Seconds” (1974), though I regret not making it yellow.
-In the original Gone in 60 Seconds, the climactic jump scene is played in slow motion, then pauses, and is replayed at regular speed to show how quickly it actually happened.
-In “The Wild Bunch” (1969), director Sam Peckinpah intercuts extreme slow motion shots with full speed shots of other action, highlighting the chaos of a scene where many things happen simultaneously.
-It’s sort of implied that my Coronet driver is a hired getaway driver, unaffiliated with the actual robber. This is a reference to “The Driver” (1978), where a getaway driver works for hire. Though a flop at the time, this movie would later directly influence the 1999 video game “Driver,” as well as more recent movies like “Drive,” “Baby Driver,” and the Transporter series. - Hry
Thanks for watching, everyone! Don't forget to read the description for more info. There's been some discussion about the odd switching of the Charger for the blue Moonhawk at the end, so I wanted to weigh in on that! One of the fun things about making movies, in the real world or virtual, is finding solutions to problems, and that's what happened here. At the time of making this, I still had a pretty elderly computer that was having more frequent problems with newer games. After days of working through filming, I was finally at the ending highway scene, but for some reason every time I had the 2 Dodges together on the highway the game kept crashing. Over and over. Setting up the AI pathing was a bitch, and then all would be lost when the game crashed again. After being frustrated and really pissed off for a while, I decided to just substitute a similar car for the Charger. You'll notice that it's only used in the scenes when its together with the Coronet; I was able to film the Charger crashing alone with no problems. So I made the switch and it worked out. I decided it was fine for two reasons: 1) there is real life precedent. Car movies frequently switched out cars for other models or completely different types, for a variety of reasons. For me, it's always been fun to notice those switches. It worked out that it would be in keeping with the "homage" aspect of this video to reference a random car replacement in the action. 2) Suspension of disbelief. At 14 minutes in, you're either with me at that point and are enjoying the ride (pun intended) or you're not.
As for the year this is set in, I only have a limited palette of cars and locations to work with, so it can't be historically accurate. Just take one look at the outrageous fuel prices in the gas station and anyone can see this isn't the 1970s! XD
‘Twas awesome dude!
I actually liked that you did that it made it seem like a legit 70s chase movie. Like how you might clearly see a car grind a gaurd rail in one scene then after that in another scene the side is pristine again only to go back to the side swipe damage later. Awsome video all around man. I love BeamNG and old chase movies so this was an awsome way to spend my lunch break.
Regardless of what imperfections you see as the creator, this was f'n awesome, you have a great eye for direction
Just handwave it and say "It's like Driver San Francisco."
With those outrageous prices, the chase could also happen in the gas crunch of the 1970s!
This was perfect. I love how in 70s movies all the cops are pro drifters and they always end up crashing into other cars giving the protagonist more time to escape. This was a perfect representation of 70s movies. Nice job mate

Awesome chase. Good thing it's a simulation; any of those crashes in an actual car of that era is very deadly. Classic cars are tough, but that metal body makes you take the force far more than a modern car.
I like how the siren on the police coronet is the same as the ones that the Havana police cars used in Driver 2.
I just noticed it XD
I also like how this game has Driv3r graphics too
The getaway car uses a driver 2 engine sfx too.
They broke my watch...
This is car 55. We're in a truck!
i bent my brand new umbrella
It's got a cop motor of 440 cubic inches, cop shocks, cop suspension, cop brakes, it was a model made before catalytic converters, so it'll run good on regular gas.
Sweet mother of acceleration, don't fail me now!
@@devinhorner2358 Elastic acceleration at that :D
As someone whos 2nd FAVORITE car of all time is a 1970 Dodge Super Bee I whole heartily thank you for this incredible creation!
Fine sir, you single handedly have created possibly one of the best short films known to man. I sensed some story involved. Would be interesting to see if there's a back story to this.
Thank you! I often film in video game worlds, but they really are short films. I do pre-production, location scouting, sound design, etc. In this case I had several extra weeks added to make the music, but the most fun thing was planning, rehearsing, and driving the car stunts! As for the story, its pretty nebulous on purpose because its not that important here. Again, the video is an homage to all the old car chase movies I love, and in those the plot points leading to the chases were pretty flimsy. Hell, in Vanishing Point the whole thing happens because the guy takes a bet from his drug dealer that he can't reach San Francisco in 3 days! Thats it! So here, we have some sort of Driver-esque "wheelman" and a partner or friend who robs a gas station. It goes kind of wrong, maybe the guy shoots somebody, but he flees to the car and they're off. It's sort of up to the viewer to fill in the holes as you see fit.
@@devinhorner2358 I fell that the driver was an ex cop, and the guy that chases him and that he makes crash is his old partner. It would be interesting to see that full story. Not saying you need to do it, but that's a good story.
@@cursor308 how exciting! What a great read!

I dear say that was quite the show. The ending was pretty satisfactory too.
Ikr love seeing those pigs go for a fly
@@trolltrama9780 I enjoyed the bit where the criminal's car crashed, since it's finally retribution from the crimes of earlier.
This was fun to watch :)
Hey how’s it going
HOLLLLLDDDD IT. I THOUGHT YOU MADE THIS VIDEO!
Oh hey, man, thanks! I like your stuff too. Random crashes are fun, but it's nice to see story-driven action.
@@devinhorner2358 I wish at the end was a little Narration in how he end up in the situation I’m just saying
Agreed
No classic cars were destroyed in the making of this film

R/wooooosh
Yeah definitely
Can you try to remake this with the new traffic update? That should be awesome! (This film is good by itself and you don’t have to!)
Edit: wow I did not expect this to explode......
I agree!
Honestly, the new traffic update would it harder. You're more in control when you know what each traffic vehicle is going to do.
@@Sketchoyed also i dont think you can choose wich cars spawn
@Misty Myles dont they despawn?
I only fired this game up again the other day, so I'll definitely be experimenting with the traffic. I think it would be useful in some scenes, like if I wanted to weave in traffic or plow into civilian cars. Other times though i wouldnt want the randomness if I'm trying to execute a complex stunt.
The best beaming car chase ever! One of my favorite videos!
**robs a gas station, shooting 2 bystanders and a guard**
**leaves calmly, walking at a normal pace, passes a taxi and enters a badass car**

@Toucan • Oh my God it's toucan Sam!
I love the suspension on the Caprices. Its satisfying to watch sometimes.
I wasn't aware that the 1949 Cadillac convertible or the 1975 Ford LTD would still work in current builds of the game. The former mod, in particular, hasn't been updated in ages.
The LTD mod was a Russian one that came out in like 2014. I think they bodies still work, but the motors do not.
I was able to drive both at the time, though the LTD suspension was questionable. I dont know if they work anymore. But they still are good as static props, and that poor old Caddy getting smashed makes me laugh every time
Slow mo crash into the tower was very satisfying.
Excuse me sir, what the fuck?
How did you actually make me care and feel emotion about a character who literally doesn't even appear in this?
This is the mark of incredible film making and cinematography, you gave each car such personality and subtlety in just 15 minutes.
Bloody brilliant work.
What I love about old muscle cars is that they actually do handle, sound and feel like powerful boats... amazing period for automotive industry, so perfectly imperfect
I used to race around Norfolk, Va with my 69 Cadillac. Talk about the ultimate boat. At 110 that thing floated like a cloud on its suspension. (In a straight line, obviously! No turning)
@@devinhorner2358 sounds so awesome, sadly you dont see these cars around here in Germany anymore... way too expensive. But someday I want to rent such a car and take it to a race track, Nürburgring would be great
The start of it reminded me both of the start of GTA 5 and Driver San Francisco. Awesome!
Amazing work. Just needs some '70's color correction and grain and it'll be just like watching an actual film!
Protip: if you notice your game starts to get laggy due to too many cars, just make the game run at 0.5X speed and speed up the footage back to normal speed in your editing package.
THEJONATAN yep, sorry.
That's a great tip. Theres an accidental bit of that right at the bus crash. I bought a new computer right after I made this so that will help too
Came for the Coronet, stayed for the soundtrack, suscribed for the chase
"Related to the incident earlier, over."
Also, I just wanna say that this is genuinely some of the best driving I've ever seen in Beam.
I love seeing that coronet being whipped around like that, me and my dad are working to restore his old '70 Superbee.
This was the most executed scene of a 70s car chase I have ever seen! Especially in beamng drive. You my friend done an astounding job and can't wait to see more!
Perfect!
But it should be
More saturated and worse quality.
But I guess it’s a remastered version from 2011
I'm seeing a tribute to driver : San Francisco here
nice work
This is definitely the most "Driver" thing I've ever seen!
This is going to make me go play a few hours of Driver 2……nostalgia avenue here I come.
This car chase is better than the chases you see in most movies these days. I'd love for a movie to come out with a 70s style car chase, only with a Challenger Hellcat and modern Charger police cars.
I really liked the chase in Jack Reacher. I felt it was definitely in the style of old movies. There's no dialog, no quips, no fast cuts, just the action and classic camera angles.
Big screaming V8s, boxy caprice cop cars and hilly San Francisco streets.. it doesn't get better than this 👍 nice video
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏!
This was very well done and I especially LOVED the attention to detail; what with the 1970 Dodge Coronet 440 getaway car (and a police interceptor coupe), the 1978 Chevrolet Caprice Classic 9-C-1 police vehicles and that odd 1978 modified Plymouth Fury front end on an otherwise stock 1978 Plymouth Volare coupe!
And, in true '70s Drive-in, B-movie fashion, the protagonist (?) dies in a fiery crash due to either a drug-induced notion ("Vanishing Point," 1971) or driver error ("Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry," 1974) outstanding job! If this were a game for say, a PS5, I'd buy it purely for nostalgic reasons! 🔥!
🐰
Ahh the Driver San Francisco / Driver 1 games... Quite nostalgic. Very well made. It reminds me of that tv series, The Streets of San Francisco. Uphill/Downhill racing with jumps and crashes, combined with classic jazzy songs. I really like those wooden interiors, much better than those extreme black, plastic interiors. This is classy.
How this started a entire generation of future retro police car chases
growing up watching 70's cop shows.... bloody fantastic ..well done
I loved this especially the part when the car avoided the roadblock and it flipped in slow motion looks just like a movie
The city chase part throws me back to those days of Driver 1/Driver 2
Especially the Driver 1, since the city looks way too similar to the one in this video
How much fun I used to have as a kid watching replays of my chases in the editor mode! This was a masterpiece :')
I love movies from the 70s, 80s, 90s. When people on those days did a car chase they fucking did it.
This is so good it reminds me of a movie from the 90s
A 70's car chase??
Within the first THIRTY SECONDS we see a 90's pickup truck
Think of it as a 70s car case in the 90s
Seriously?, this person worked hard on their video, I'd like to see you try to make something this good!
DukeTheGreat he was just giving him some constructive criticism.
Now while I support constructive criticism, you just have to work with what the game has.
OMG this video is awesome, those driver 1 feels, Watching those bumpy suspensions is really hypnotic
This... This is f*cking amazing. A trip down memory lane for sure! Both in the 70's manner and creatively using the old beamNG mods that no longer can drive as parked vehicles to set the atmosphere! I can only imagine the amount of takes it took to get that crash with the bus right! And the slow motion when you drifted around that crossroad was just mindblowing. I bloody love it. You deserve more praise!!
Thanks! The bus crash used timing and some math and wasn't too bad. The AI is pretty consistent so timing how many seconds it took for them to get the intersection meant I could work out when to start the bus.
The Driver vibes were very real on this. Reminded me a hell of a lot of the San Francisco map for obvious reasons.
This is nothing short of epic as far as animated videos is concerned. You captured the '60's-'70's car chase movies perfectly!
Extremely well done, Steve McQueen would have been proud.
I knew this was gonna be good as soon as the music started.
Driver 1. Ah the best game I played in my childhood!
Crime doesn't pay.
And he didn't get away.
This *legitimately* could be a scene from an late 70s or early 80s Action Movie
The best part about this video is that they're so many easter eggs and refrances to movies and games in this movie, from driver 2 all the way to the 70s virsion of gone in 60 seconds. Amazing work man.
This feels like what a modern(yet retro due to era) Driver game would be like. Let's forget the "modern" ones they put out after 2. If this wasn't BeamNG, it would kinda look/feel like Driver. Was exciting to watch the whole chase :D
It's been some months since I beat Driver 1&2 on the PS2 with my brother(then watching how much a certain Jimmy Broadbent suffered playing through it aswell). Felt like being right back in it :)
It’s weird how I kept seeing the 1987-1990 Chevy caprice everywhere so I guess you couldn’t find 1970s cop cars
at the time there wasnt 70 s cop cars for beamng however there is now after an update
They started making that body style in 1977, so it could fit.
Yeah the Coronet itself had a cop variant, but I couldn't have all the cop cars and the chase car be the same. That would be boring. And really the year is nebulous, because the gas prices are crazy high and there are signs for ATMs in the shop windows and such. I am excited that there are some 60s cop cars now though
Okay so, either I'm having Déjà vu or there is some
higher force at work here. Because I know I've
seen this somewhere before.
Yeah same I swear I've seen something like this in an old movie with Steve McQueen in it
"Driver" video game.
The chase from Bullitt.
@@deadringer6759 congratulations you've guessed it would you like a cookie?
BeamNG.Drive developers would be thoroughly impressed, as am I!
A part of me really wanted the car when it was in the air to land and drive away after that sick 360 flip
A great film with many spectacular crashes
I love the 70's!!!
Служил Гаврила хлебопёком, Гаврила булку испекал... Хорошая модель повреждений, браво!..
The sounds of this video in a nutshell:
vroom vroom

WEOWEOWEOWEOWEOWEO
*occasional crunch*
You've forgot the iconic 70's wah guitar muted strokes, the "ooAAooAAooAAooAA"
Don’t forget skerrrrrrrrrrrrrt
Another Gladiator bites the dust. Seriously though that was very entertaining!
More entertaining than a lot of short films.
I just discovered your films today. NICE.
I had a 70 R/T in the 80s - 440, 4 speed.. I have some footage on VHS somewhere that this reminds me a lot of..
Thank You for developing these
Very nice! My favorite has always been E bodies but with that not being an option in the game, I've spent a lot of time with the B bodies and come to love them as well.
Top notch work! With that early 70's Mustang I saw as a parked car you could recreate the original Gone in 60 Seconds car chase!
Where in the video is that? I didn't catch it
It's at the beginning of the uphill sequence. I would like to use it in something though the interior is sparse and the sound's not great
wow that was a cool action car chase 🚓🚔🚗😎
This has convinced me to get the game after sticking with rigs of rods even though most of the community has moved over to beamNG.
They sure weren't afraid to kill the hero in the 70s. This was perfect.
Nothing more 70s than cars jumping in tight spaces
The amount of effort put into this is amazing
I’d give this film a 10/10 for the non stop action in it great job
Definitely reminiscent of Driver 1, and I love it.
This video looks like driver from PS1, It's a classic and I will always love that game see, that's why I like this video so much.
Old video i understand. BUT DAMN you deserve an Oscar for best short film!
Getting some OG Driver vibes from this video. Good work.
Ah yes, 1970s police chases with 1980s police cars, my favourite.
Top chase on dodge coronet without crashes
Definetly reminds me of “Gone in 60 Seconds,” and “Bullitt,” you did good on this.
me gusta como derrapa esa bestia me gusta también los policías me encantas estos vídeos
Now we need an over the top 80s car chase
this is really cool! i made one a bit like this about a week ago on my channel, but for Gone In 60 Seconds (newer film) recreated the end scene! this is why i found your video as i was looking for things similar to what i made too :)
I’m getting Driver: You Are The Wheelman vibes from this. Although more realistic
Me too
After all this time, this is just worth rewatch after rewatch. I would love to see more! And now that I know so much more about BeamNG, I may try to make my own. All the cool little details in this mini movie, also considering this seemingly has been done using a keyboard and no fancy steering drivers. As well as knowing the time each segment is made because of the clock in the Gavril, which is tuned to real time.
I was going to comment on how much this reminded me of the original "Driver" game, but then I read the description. Well done mate! Great video, I genuinely enjoyed it.
Most people want the next GTA to be set in the 80s in Vice City, but I would love to see a GTA game set in the 70s in San Fierro
I definitely get a Bullitt vibe with the chase through the San Franciscoesque streets. Very well done.
Noone:
Me: Lets install BeamNG
My pc: *no.*
Who TF say "noone" instead of "no one"
i need some ideas some people do
Takes a Gavril to catch a Gavril
Also... I don't know if it was intentional or not but the last second changing of the blue car back and forth between the Superbee and the Oldsmobile was a nice touch
That's some great chase scene right there! I sense some ''Striking Distance'' when the cars start going down the street @4:11! I just love the suspension of these old American cars, makes them behave like goats jumping all the time on such streets! And when I watch a chase and this characteristic comes in play, it has a certain entertaining value! :-P
You sir have created something great, both to watch and to listen to! Also...
-You work for a piece, right?
-10.000, up front. Against 15%.
-How do we know you're that good?

I have been following Beamng Drive since 2013 and I'm just shocked by how the game has evolved over these 6 years.
I only discovered it last year, I think through random CZcams videos. I got excited to use it to make my own video. Unfortunately that meant I had to learn how to work the game, the AI, learn the driving physics, all WHILE filming and trying to being creative lol
This video is too underrated, it deserves more views!

Feels more like the 80’s with the first responding cop car being an 87’-90’ caprice
At the Beginning with the song it was a Driver 1 reminder for me in San Francisco!
this chase is absolutely perfect !
Would love to see you do one of "Dirty Mary Crazy Larry". The 69 Charger RT would be spectacular to see it hitting the train & exploding & that 66 Blue Chevy Impala jumping the suspension bridge would be spectacular as well if possible. I have yet to see anybody do one of these of "Dirty Mary Crazy Larry". Hope you do it. I enjoy all your videos here very much. WAY COOL. Thumbs up!!
bRUH i was rooting for the getaway, so sad to see it all end that way. This was actually having me on the edge of my seat. good job!
This is great! Reminds me of that hillarious police chase in "Blues Brothers"
All my favourite 70's films run at a silky-smooth 15 fps lol
Still really cool tho!

For anyone that can't understand; the Gavril Gladiator is based of a 1970 Dodge Coronet Superbee ( maybe not a superbee correct me if im wrong ). The chases are also based of the movies 'Gone In 60 Seconds (good ol version)' and 'Driver' series.
The driving and camera work in this is impeccable, Great Work!
This gave me such Driver 1 vibes
I instantly thought of driver lol
