Expeditions is a Mudrunner game just like Snowrunner exept, scouting rules. Unlike Snowrunner, Expeditions is almost exclusively about exploration. You still have epic off road vehicles with add ons like sideboards, roof racks, and spare tire mounts. The difference is you now have deployable winch points, jack screws to flip overturned vehicles, an echo sounder to test water depth, and even a DRONE to help you navigate the harsh terrain.
Each expedition is an objective based mission in a particular region ( like the Arizona desert ) You still have full access to the map and if you complete 5 expeditions in each region, you can unlock full freeroam for each map. There are 3 regions at launch with more planned in the future.
Explore fairly sizeable maps with challenging off the beaten path routes. It makes for a very rewarding gameplay loop. Deliver valuable ( albeit downsized ) cargo to build out your headquarters to uncover the secrets hidden away by an untamed landscape. It's worth noting, Expeditions has a lot more to do with logistics and planning your route compared to Snowrunner.

I'm just speculating, but it seems like it's a filler game while they develop the real sequel. I also think it could be an early access game disguised as a full release (based on how they've been updating the game).
