SNL Hosts Who Bombed Big Time

  • When it premiered on NBC in 1975, no one could have guessed that Saturday Night Live would become the pop culture juggernaut that it is today. Taking over for The Tonight Show’s The Best of Carson, SNL’s goal was to offer comedy, political satire, and live music in an effort to win over the coveted 18-34 crowd. Part of the show’s draw soon became its weekly host, an often big-name celebrity guest who would step in for 90 minutes of comedy.
    While some SNL hosts have absolutely flourished, making repeat appearances over the years and creating some of the series’ most iconic characters, others have been completely disastrous. These are the SNL hosts who bombed big time.

      Just like high numbers DO NOT mean it was good. This is a stigma that haunts the industry today. Just because alot of people happened to tune in or go to the theatres to see a film does not mean it was good quality entertainment. Hollywood doesn't get this nor do they care as long as something happens to rake in millions of $$. Which is why Hollywood is littered with reboots, sequels, and comic flicks these days.

    • @zombywoof864
      @zombywoof864 Před 2 lety

      Even the music side suffers this way as well. Did you know bands like the grateful dead and Jimi Hendrix were considered one hit wonders? All because only one of their songs were popular among mainstream and made it to the top 100 billboard charts. It's sad that numbers dictate what's good and what's not rather than the actual art itself. Who knows how many great musicians and movies we've missed out on over the decades from this stigma.

    The cast all say Steven Seagal. He proposed a rape scene. And said no to every idea they had. Wanted to beat up Hans and Franz. Brought his stuntmen on at the end to do an Exxon scene degrading pollution. Beating them all up. Crowd was confused.

      If you had 400million dollars...FOUR HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS!...you would be closer to having absolutely no money than to being a billionaire.
      Thats the difference between millionaires and billionaires. Nowhere near the same.Not the same at all.

    Zappa, Berle, and Lasser all seem like casualties of the show being new in the 70s and still finding its way and no one understanding it at the time. If no one wanted Berle to do his old timey comedy act then he never should have been hired.
    It sounds like Zappa thought he could do it but it was too much for him and perhaps this made celebrities re-think whether they could handle live tv. Its one thing to pull off a great performance when you get multiple takes and another when you only get one chance on live TV.
    Meanwhile, apparently Lasser thought live TV was an invitation to ignore all the sketches and just do whatever she wanted. Its too bad this was early in the show's history because 20 years later the show probably would have handled her cocaine arrest with a funny skit about it rather than her going off script and sitting down and talking about it.

    Seagal’s episode is so bad it’s funny. I was laughing at it the whole time.
    I had high hopes for Patrick Stewart’s show after STNG ended, but it was mostly awful.
    But the worst show for me was Nancy Kerrigan’s. You could tell she didn’t want to be there and hated the skits.

    • @tuttleberry
      @tuttleberry Před 8 měsíci

      I guess I agree, somewhat. It's like - Seagal just wanted the male cast to be stuntmen for him, so he could beat them up - doesn't matter what the stories of the sketches are. At the time of the episode I had no idea Seagal himself was so unstable, so I probably just chuckled a little at the episode. Now though, yeah, it's so bad it's funny.
