Wood Turning Large Tumbling Block Bowl Escher Style

- I turn a tumbling block bowl or maybe it is a platter using Walnut, Maple and Cherry.
I try to show my step by step method to cut and glue up the blank.
This creates a very interesting illusion. It gives many looks, including a stair step.
The process for gluing it together is time consuming but spread over a number of days it was not bad. The pieces all fit in place with only a few needing a slight adjustment.
There were 240 pieces used to make 80 blocks plus a few dozen more to fill in areas around the outside.
Finishes used:
Minwax sanding sealer and Polycyrlic
Acks Abrasive Paste and Polish/Restoring Paste
Tools used:
Bowl gouges and negative rake scrapers.

Beautiful piece. It was mesmerising watching it spin on the Lathe.
Thank you very much and thanks for watching. Looks like you are into race cars. Back in 2011 I drove my sons race car in one of the races he does. It was fun for sure.

Gorgeous pie plate. Really lovely. Good Dream you had.
Thank you Judith. Well if I eat pie and Ice cream late at night it will give me nite mares. So that explains it.
Thanks for watching.

Saw this combo of woods used to make cutting boards. This approach is certainly unique.
Yes it is used for cutting boards and probably more than for bowls. The glue up would be easier that way.
Yes it is used for cutting boards. Gluing the pieces can be easier because you can glue them in long lengths then cut to the size you want.
Absolutely fabulous Gary, take care, John

Thank you Gord, happy you like it. I just made a stand so I display it with this view.

Gary: Almost done with the dizzy bowl ( came out better then I thought and thinking of trying this one. You are officially my mentor
Thank you Jim. This one here takes a extra amount of patience. You are working with many blocks that are exactly the same. But well worth it.
Happy to hear you finished your dizzy bowl and it turned out good.

When I first saw one of these bowls, I couldn’t figure out what was supposed to be tumbling! The second time I changed my focus, and saw it! Then I tried to figure out how you did it., and what you did about the corners that were sticking up.Whew! I took me countless views and seeing various other types of segmenting to realize what you do. I gave up after that. Being able to figure all that out, what goes where and how completely overwhelms me!. I’m glad and impressed that you have figured it out, so you can produce such amazing pieces!
Thank you Beatrice. It can be hard to see. Even sitting right in front of you and having made it. It changes with a slight tilt of the head.
Lots of fun to make for sure.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
WOW that is fantastic. Simply beautiful
Thank you very much PJ, I appreciate your comment and thanks for watching,
Gary
very interesting way to glue them up. I think I like that way better than some of the straps I
have seen
Thank you Byron, Those fixtures force the joints together nicely. But the pieces have to be made to fit them just right or it will not work. First one of these I made I decided the individual fixtures were going to help. After I had the blocks glued I came up with making fixtures to hold 6 blocks at a time. So far it has been working out. Although this is only the 3rd one I have made.
Thanks for watching,
Gary

I am starting one at the moment but not as big as yours because my lathe only takes 10 inch. I will probably end up with a 9 inch bowl. Thank you for the tips, I'm going to follow your instructions as near as I can with the wood I have and hopefully it turns out. If it ends up half as good as yours I'll be over the moon. Thanks again for a useful video.
Thank you William and best of luck. If you have any questions about it let me know.

Beautiful. Will have to try one. 👍
Thank you Gene, yes by all means give it a try. It looks like a bigger challenge than it is. Just one angle to cut.

Typical gifted mind, never stops working sleeping or awake. You’ll probably wake up tired one morning and walk into the shop to discover a freshly turned bowl just like the one you dreamed about. 😊
Thank you Danny and you are pretty much right about that. I have been watching TV(sort of) and something pops in my head. I have to write it down so I do not forget.
This may sound odd but I used to wake up and lay in bed for 10 minutes or so and plan out what I was going to get done at work that day.(loved my job as a wood Patternmaker)
Been retired for 11 years and I have been known to do this in my wood turning at home.
Not saying this is a good thing LOL

That is so wild I may attempt this this summer!
Hi Luie,

Thank you Robert! Yes lots of clamps for sure. Years ago my wife always bought me clamps for presents. I told her she could probably stop now. I have a bunch of the little spring clamps as well. I have almost ran out of those on some glue ups.

You just had to teach me how to do that didn't you? Wife is gonna be mad now. All my time will be cutting 30° angles. Good work
Yes but just make sure you make her something first. This was the biggest one I have made but they still look good smaller.
Best of luck,
Gary
I do not know how you keep it all straight, have so much patience and stay motivated. Impressive. That is so crazy when you are turning it, it looks like it is going both directions. So cool!
Thank you Stephanie, all I can say is I knew the end results would be very interesting looking so I just kept focused on that There are times when you almost sure it has a bunch of raised blocks but it is as smooth as can be. We can than the artist M.C Escher for his painting many years ago.

Beautiful bowl. Most people don't understand how long it really takes to do those glue-ups, great video.

Very impressive, Gary. I can really appreciate the many hours and steps it takes before the turning even begins. Add to that the times of tool sharpening and delicate cuts to achieve the shape and visual effect, the sanding steps, surface prep, base finish, more sanding and final finishing. Your descriptive video showed us all of that in 20 minutes. Nice work, Gary. Thanks for the wonderful video.
Thank you Ray, happy you enjoyed it. Yes lots of time and steps to make this one. It really helps if you do not get in a hurry and enjoy each step of the process. Good thing I do because the turning step was pretty short lol!

I first saw this type of illusion on chopping boards but a bowl this size takes it to another level completely. Stunning once again.
Kevin (UK)
Thank you Kevin, yes I have seen the cutting boards as well. It would be hard for me to actually use a cutting board like this but it would be end grain so it might hold up.

A few years ago I made some Escher photo illusions with Lego-blocks. But I did need Photoshop to do that trick 😏. What you are making here is unbelievable. I always liked the Escher Cubes and Cube houses as a drawing. And as a cutting board it was great. But in a big bowl like yours, that's just unbelievable. What a lot of work you have had here. Magnificent!

The bowl is outstanding. I love your production. Show a process in real time, explain how many iterations to follow and get on to the next process. I wish more you tubers would follow your example. I like the jigs you used. Could you do a short video about how you made them? I know they are relatively straight forward but you must have a tip or two on how to be accurate making them. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay healthy.
Thank you so much Glen. i have been thinking of making a video to show in more detail on how to cut the pieces and how important the setup on the sled is. I do show a little of that in this video I made on how I make a star. czcams.com/video/ji-3-URvri8/video.html&ab_channel=ThePapa1947

Thank you very much.
amazing bowl with a lot of work wow i would like to see how you make your jig for gluing
Thank you Villy, I appreciate your comments.
So the jigs are just cutouts in stacked up baltic birch. They can be band sawed out. But I have a CNC mill so I used that. The gigs are really what makes this accurate as it is a clamping fixture that pulls all 3 joints into the right place.
