A Tangent Stave Wood Turning + Adjustable Stave Sled

- I make another tangent glue up and make a small platter out of it.
Made from Walnut, Yellow Birch and Padauk.
I also made and adjustable sled for cutting tapered staves.
I show all the steps I used in making the turning and I show how the sled works as well.
I also hot glued tenons on the piece to hold it while doing the turning and then used denatured alcohol the help remove the hot glue.
I used Titebond III to glue it together. Some might use epoxy resin but the glue holds fine.

Finished with Spray Lacquer and Acks Abrasive Paste and Polish
I used bowl gouges and negative rake scrapers in the turning.

I think it's time for a channel name change, professor. "The Genius Woodturner" or "Einstein Does Woodturning." My gosh, you are just far and away above any other segment turner I have seen. And it's not just the math, it's your ability to see what the piece will look like before you begin so you know how to do the math! Amazing! Really well done, very interesting and fun to watch video, Gary! 😊 Oh, yeah, and the final piece is beautiful, too!

Gosh Phil I am not sure how I could use the channel names. My head would swell up so much my face shield would not fit! As it is I will need to wait an hour to go start a turning lol.

One of my favorite things at work was the planning of how I would build the pattern and there was a lot of math involved in most of it.
This was a lot of fun to work out do each step to get to the end.

Thank you Gord. I appreciate your comments on using the turning for a jam chuck. Much easier than removing the piece to do just the same thing. When making a tenon to hot glue onto a piece I often use the face of the chuck jaws the same way.

Great video and I especially like the mathematics explanation as I am a retired math teacher.
Thank you very much. Math was one of my favorite subjects in school. I went on to use this type of math as a wood pattern maker and it is just how I think now. Many years ago when I got my first calculator with all the bells and whistles I fell in love with the tangent button. We had customers who insisted that we lay the angles out that way instead of a Starrett protractor. And that all made sense.

Yes I passed gebra with a d-. I understood equations but couldn't make them work until I took geometry. I think my algebra teacher couldn't or wouldn't explain things. He would talk give us our homework or tests and that was it. If you had a question he would say it's in the book figure it out.

What a great bowl/platter, Im thinking of doing one of those but put a cup in the center for chip dip and the outer for chips, celery, ect. What a sweet little jig also. Always leartn something from your videos Gary!!

@@ThePapa1947 padauk is so stinking dusty and goes EVERYWHERE. Every time I’ve used it my nose will run for a couple of days and every time I go to blow my nose it looks like my nose is bleeding. I love the final results, just hate working with it.
Great looking piece! I keep saying I want to make your jig and try this, but then I think about the glue up, and I really don't like glue ups! Maybe someday.

A long you piece of wood are and wide are they you do beautiful work hi learned from you A lot thanks you for sharing
Denis I cut the pieces from a 1.375 inch thick board and they were 5" long. The wide end was .875 inches wide and tapered to .00 inches. What is important is you cut them 10 degrees. The length will work itself out.

Another fine jig for segmented turning. I'll make one. My church has a fund raiser in June and I'm making bowls them them to sell. One or two of these plates would be nice too. I have one of those digital angle levels; it's very useful when you need precise angles.

I have been thinking about getting one of the digital protractors as well. But this works great for most everything. I even set angles on my band saw table . I just zero it to the blade.

Well, it looks like I need to make another jig! Thanks Gary! A friend of mine gave me a small table saw a few weeks ago. I've yet to try it out, so I'm not sure how accurate it will cut. Guess I'll just have to try!
Thank you Heather. It all depends on how it is made and what it is made of. A small table saw could work just fine if it is well built. Mine is a a pretty heavy duty one but for years I had a Sears table saw that was much lighter.
I never had any problems with it making accurate cuts. It was a late 1940's or very early 1950's.

@@felocarp if you are talking about where the segments meet in the middle I have a number turnings where I did that.
Cutting them is no different that regular segments other than they have points that meet.

My very first turning was in 1961 in a grade school shop class. I knew I loved wood working back then and went on to become a wood pattern maker. From 2D drawings I made 3D patterns out of wood that were used in foundries to cast metal parts for all kinds of things. I needed to be able to read the drawings and produce the patterns so that they could be molded in the sand. I would call it the "wood workers dream job" Not only wood working but the patterns needed to be designed to create what was needed.
So that is my background which involved a lot of math and engineering to produce what was needed,
