- I stepped into this first time reaction/analysis to Incubus expecting some pretty harsh vocals, and I was blown away with my expectations absolutely shattered. Not only was this performance of "Wish You Were Here" beautiful, but I read in the comments of the video that it sounds so similar to the album version. That blows me away!

So cool hearing professional analysis of things that were just a glimmer of emotional awareness for me at age ~14. Looking forward to more Incubus! Reminds me of two other bands with amazing vocals that I got into around that time: *Mr Big* and *Tonic.* I still go back to them all the time when I want to hear some incredible singing. Anyone else?
My favorite song of theirs is Pardon Me. If you liked Incubus enough to consider doing another song, I hope you pick Pardon Me.

I just saw them live for the first time in June. For a band that's been playing as long as they have, they essentially never deviated from the album versions of the songs. It was surprising and incredible, but not in a bad way. They do sound a bit "empty" compared to the fullness of the album mix, but that's just proof that they're playing everything live. Go see them if you have the chance.
Incubus is by far the tightest live band I have ever seen.
Yeah, Jose and Mike are just crazy talented. They are near perfect live. I can forgive a vocalist missing here and there, especially with fatigue or strain, but Incubus musically nails it live every time.

Totally! I remember buying it when it came out, I was around 15. I listened to it on repeat for mooooonths. Especially loved passing out high to it. Especially later into the album. Would definitely put it in my top 5 most important albums of my early maturing years.

This band is the reason.. and I mean this with all my heart. The reason I'm alive today. I had a very rough battle as a teen with depression and his voice and this bands vibe kept my me from following through more then once. My life goes out to these men. Also my first live concert I ever seen. Thank you incubus

Incubus is the band my mum introduced me to during my high school years, which were so hard I still can't discuss it.
And they helped me get through it.

Solidarity, brother. I'm in the exact same boat. I still remember the first time I heard Incubus, it was 1997, just after they released Science. I was instantly hooked, obsessed even. Their music carried me through some dark times and I suspect I wouldn't have made it through if I didn't have it.

Literally every album is a timeless masterpiece.
The whole album of Morning View is incredible. I still listen to the whole thing in one sitting over 20 years later. It’s a great example of a perfect, timeless record.
Actually...Make Yourself, Morning View, and Light Grenades I can listen to the entire album straight through over and over

Incubus was the side track of a lot of our high school years. At no point were they ever my favorite band in high school, but they always 'made the playlist' to use the modern terms. They are one of those bands like REM that just kinda have this timeless quality to them where their music sounds as good to you at 35 as it did when you were 15. This song, (even more so Pardon me) is really really deeply rooted in my memories with more than a tinge of nostalgia. Honestly I kinda regret not appreciating how awesome it was being young when Incubus, SOAD, Tool, Deftones, etc were all active and in peak form.

Watching you fall in love with Incubus and Brandon’s vocals brought me so much joy. I did not expect that from this video at all.
To me, Brandon has always seemed like a guy who really feels what he sings. You can tell the sentiments are genuine, and you can't help but close your eyes and sway with the dude. I've loved Incubus since they were starting out, and it's always like returning to an old friend when you come back to them.
He is a really underrated rock singer. Incubus kinda gets an unfair rep because they were just so good and radio-friendly with some of their catalog as they found their footing. But it's not fair. Their first two albums were almost a funk/punk/nu-metal Mashup. Then they found mainstream success for a couple albums, then the lineup changed a bit and they kinda fell off, but their albums from "Fungus Among Us" through "Morning View" were straight fire.

Incubus, one of the most underrated bands ever. They have so much more talent than they ever got credit for. One thing about his singing style that I don't hear many people talk about is his "runs." when he is on a note, he can hold it clear and long, but often he changes pitch up and down quickly but smoothly in a way it's hard to specify what is happening. I don't know what to call it, but listen as he sings, he raises and drops pitch quickly but super smoothly within his notes. (finished watching, you did mention this, so thanks for noticing!)

Mike Einzinger, the guitarist, is a composer. And I believe classically trained. He's done a few movie soundtracks with full symphonies. He adds so much depth to his "normal" rock songs it makes it amazing to listen to.

I love watching her discover Incubus for the first time! I discovered them at 19 - I’m 42 now. This is my fave song and fave album… there’s really nothing like it. Brandon Boyd does have an “anytime” voice. I’ve seen them in concert more times than I can count, and they NEVER disappoint. Fave band of all time! ❤

It’s hard to go wrong with Incubus. Drive and Warning are also really good songs with thoughtful lyrics.
One thing I always noticed about Brandon's singing was that he's always seems relaxed. He may be dancing around and moving but his singing has nothing forced in it, even hitting high notes. He makes it seem like he can sing all day without breaking a sweat. Amazing band!

This has been my favorite band since I was 10 years old, it’s been 23 years. Watching someone fall in love with them is bringing me such joy.
Incubus has to be still one of those really good band from the 2000s. I literally feel like I’m literally transported back to a warm feeling from my teenage years whenever I listen to them.
You would love so many of their songs! Check out “Drive” or “Stellar” or “Pardon Me” or “Warning” or “I Miss You” next. Brandon Boyd has one of the best voices in rock! Their studio versions have absolutely beautiful mixes too 👍🏻

They blew up when I was in high school and I remember all of these teenage girls just going crazy over Incubus. Great voice, good looks, and youthful. They have their own little corner of the late 90's / early 00's Alternative Rock scene.
Watching someone fall in love with Brandon's voice is funny. Seen it happen so many times. I met them all backstage prior to their concert, for a meet and greet I was gifted for a birthday a few years ago. One of my best birthday presents ever received. They were all very cool and chilled out and still interacted nicely with their fans, posing with us for tons of photos etc.
Elizabeth is amazing, bringing her appreciation of what artists do to others.
Make Yourself was a revolutionary album. Incubus was something special in rock music. Mike Einziger is a wholly underrated guitarist.

Mikey is the shit. I would consider him the not so secret secret weapon of Incubus, but all the other guys are just amazing as well. Incredible players, all of them (Don't know much about DJing, but I'm sure Kilmore is also great at what he does, plus he learned the piano later on to contribute further)
So, given that Mikey's guitar playing is obviously full of amazing textures and soundscapes, I'd award Jose the honourable title of Secret Weapon, bc fewer people pay attention to the drums, but they are a super important factor in the enjoyment of a song

Omg... Incubus is SUCH a good, underrated band. their writing is just SO creative, and their Mike's guitar voicings are so funky and imaginative. and Brandon's voice is just fire. They started out as a funk band, then went into nu-metal and then mellowed out, so there's tons of different iterations of Incubus.
I wouldn't really say they were a "funk" band or a "nu metal" band, their earlier stuff was funkier but they were always rocky and they never were really nu metal either imo. But I agree in that they are awesome.
Mike was one of, if not the top influence of my guitar playing growing up. He got me so interested in the technical side of sound and layering effects. As for Brandon - he has such a pure voice. His live vocals are nearly identical to album recordings - if not better. After hearing so many groups live and how the vocals change slightly, it was incredible to hear how unaffected Brandon sounded.

Brandon is honestly one of the goats, so expressive and precise you really feel what he is putting down.
I feel like you would TRULY appreciate Dig... Brandon's vocal range is much more on display in this one, and shows how much his voice matures over a relatively short period of time. (4 years)... His growth as a vocalist is truly incredible. Being a fan of theirs for 25ish years, I've got to hear them grow SO much.

I saw Incubus for the first time live this year. I was really there for another band that I am a superfan of, but Incubus stole the show for me. The live performance is just astounding!
I carried their albums in my bag everywhere I went. Morning view is amazing. The music, space, ambience, vocals, lyrics. It amazed me at the time and still sends shivers down my spine. Will forever love Incubus.

Hearing it again, it had a heavy Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath influence. Probably because they were there when it was recorded. Jimmy Page drove that sound. I don't think it was for admiration of Floyd, more of what Jimmy wanted to do with a synthesizer. My musical opinion..... the lyrics could have been more crafted and refined. But really, this was all recorded live and improvised. Going for melody and harmony rather than poetry.
Saw these guys on their “Morning View” album tour, and it was an incredible show. Having floor seats made me feel like I was in a living room watching these guys jam out. The sound scapes they create are fantastic. Their guitarist, Mike Einziger, is very talented and underrated, imo.

One of the things I love about a lot of Incubus' style is that it doesn't feel rushed. There are songs of course that are more fast paced and in your face but it always has this dimension of chill to it. Also Brandon Boyd has some incredible talent and the rest of the band are top rate yet underrated as mucisians I think. They have a really great groove to them always and there's nothing really like them out there.
And they're FINALLY releasing a new album. Bout damn time. Also, give Aqueous Transmission a go too, from Incubus (live works, record works).

I found a 3-hour looping version of Aqueous Transmission and I just put that on sometimes in the background when I need to chill out.
Their live shows are so simple yet so perfectly executed. A band and music that just stands up all by itself. My favourite band of all time.

One of the coolest things about Incubus (IMO) is you can pick an album, any album and hear almost completely different music. Yet, It is still, undeniably Incubus.

I think it's kind of impossible to make a bad list of Incubus songs. And if you start making a good list, it's hard to stop adding songs to it.
2 albums in thier entirety from Incubus Morning View and Make Yourself. You can any song from either album and really dig into his vocal capabilities. A seriously underrated band.

In my 37 years I’ve yet to find any album as good or as complete as both Make Yourself and Morning View. I will always believe those are two of the best albums EVER. Pure magic.
Incubus musically are GENIUS!!! ALL of them are top. To me the Guitarrist and drummer are in another level.

Saw them live about 6 months ago, they STILL sound like the album live. Even after this much time.

Dig was the first song I from them I fell in love with. Light Grenades isn't talked about much (at least as a great album), but it's the album that introduced me to them so it will always have a special place in my heart. Drive is my favorite song because it's personal to me. Brandon has that great ability to mix intensity with melody. The transitions are never jarring. Their music is strangely intense, melancholy, and uplifting all at the same time. Hope you add more of them to your reaction list!
I love when there is such harmony in a band it's not just the singer it's also the musicians the sounds they make and how all sounds and vocal go smoothly together to make a song and like in every profession you find people who just work and some other people who not just work but they are artists in what they do
I had a big Incubus phase. They felt so fresh and still are, there is something unique about their sound, can't pinpoint what exactly due to lack of musical knowledge.
Tempo, simplicity, ambience, melody, major keys with minor moments, jazz, positive lyrics, great singing, etc. They’re not trying to do too much or be too dark. Good mood band
Incubus and Red Hot Chili Peppers just have a vibe about them that no other bands have ever recreated. Just like a feeling of a time in the late 90s early 00s on the west coast of America.

Incubus has been my favorite band since I was 15. I’m 39 now and my wife and I have seen them in concert multiple times in our 20 years together. I know nothing about singing but what you describe in this video is why I love them.
Brandon’s voice is smooth as silk. I have issues with auditory processing so I struggle to hear lyrics correctly most times; however, with Brandon’s enunciation and clarity, I can understand his amazing, descriptive lyrics.
The instruments are layered and build so well. Their sound is crystal clear and well organized while retaining the ability to get a chaotic when the time is right! Great job in your review! I enjoyed watching you experience my favorite band and top 5 songs!
That's really interesting... I also really don't _hear_ lyrics when I listen to music unless I really force myself to focus on them, my brain just makes it another Instrument layer (They really seperate into layers/tracks in my head...

Brandon Boyd has the best vocal range and the quality of his voice is psychedelic. Been a fan since a kid. 🔥🎶
His voice is beautiful, one of the most blessed and talented singers of my generation. It's impressive. Even in the weirdest songs by Incubus, full of experimentation, he stands out with that technically perfect voice

Incubus got me through some hard times when I was a teen and an iconic part of my life that I can always feel years later
They made such a swift change from S.C.I.E.N.C.E. and it was quite magical and melodic, with a few remnants from the past.
Still one of their best albums tho.

I just saw them last sunday. Brandons voice hasnt changed. They are amazing live. They are so tight and precise. Mike (guitarist) is an incredible human. One of the best live shows I've seen 20 years ago and last week.
Brandon and this band are absolutely original and genuine, they can play almost anything...Brandon has a warm and cool voice, and the lyrics are very deep... One of my favorite bands ever!! Cool video ❤

In the Company of Wolves is probably slightly a better vocal showcase than If Not Now, When, IMO. Both are good but but Wolves.

Brandon Boyd has an incredible voice. As heard in songs like Mexico, Sick sad Little World, Aqueous Transmission, and "The Warmth" is my all time favorite. 😊

I love this song. I probably love "Drive" even more, and how it showcases how great Brandon's natural instrument is.
If you like Incubus but aren't familiar with their album titled S.C.I.E.N.C.E. this is something special that doesn't usually hit mass production. It was when the band decided to treat musical genres as if their individual pieces on the musical Rubik's cube and tried many combinations that they thought were interesting. Definitely a must listen for anybody who likes the sound Incubus creates.

Incubus is very Melanchole as you said! They have such a positive flow, vibe and melody in their songs. It’s what makes them so unique.
I appreciate your pointing out of the moments it took on an "ugly" shift! With most of their work Incubus always has a silly flair about it, never taking themselves too seriously and showing the ugly as well as the beauty. This man has been one of the biggest influences in my own singing for 24 years and it's great to see somebody else geek out about this bloody band! Aint they good!
The poetry in this particular song is astonishing for a rock band. It's the first thing that made me notice Incubus. That and the really liquid and elastic vocals.
you're not alone, musicians have always found Incubus to be musically fascinating. myself included. unique sound, seamless.
They are what I call "surfer rock". Where it has that rock grind, but the vibe and story of the song is very positive.
I love Incubus!! It got me thru high school and even after. The Brandon is beautiful, vocally and looks too, lol!! All of the songs give me goosebumps. Drive was my favorite but also Mexico.
