The '60 is my absolute favorite Pontiac, ever.
On the gauges, they were the "same" after 1958.
1958 used fuel, coolant temp, engine oil pressure and ammeter.
1959-60 both kept fuel and ammeter with lights for oil pressure and coolant temp COLD/HOT. 1961-on removed the green COLD lamp. 1969 replaced the ammeter with a GEN light.
Did you notice the HIGH BEAM indicator under the 60mph line? Its a Pontiac indian head.

Another easter egg is the Pontiac arrowhead-shape rear side marker lights on the 1968s.

Jay! I came across the 1961 Full Sized Pontiac styling much later in my life. After the Internet. I seen 1 drive by and never close up. But it quickly became my favorite GM Pontiac Style and I loved the 1959 and 1965 Full sized prior to coming across the 1961.
I saw this car as an entry in the book of collectible cars and I was always like wow that thing looks incredible but I’ve never seen one in person until I did this episode.. I kind of sort of want one.. I think this made my top 10 list of cars that I would like to own one day I might do that as an episode.

Your 2023 videos have been the best ever and appreciate the coverage of all decades!…great comparison between the 1961 and 1960 Pontiac models just as you did in the earlier video comparing the 1960 and 1959 Catalina…the 1960 models still win based on rear styling with the double hump tail and reverse light set!!...one request…do a video on a car with a "breezeway" retractable rear window such as a 1964 Mercury Park Lane four-door hardtop!!!

I'd always liked the styling of the '61 Chevy, especially Impala, but in my younger years in the late 60s & 70s there were still a few of those around. In the 80s when I became aware of Pontiacs styling of their 61 line, I was hooked. Never owned one, as GTOs were more plentiful, but WOW.
This is the first time I saw this car in the flesh, it had made the top ten list of cars I’d like to own. I’ll have to find a safari and tempest the 4 cylinder engine sounds interesting plus tempest offered a aluminum block 215 v8 which on paper sounds pretty cool.
So many subtle lines that looked great on screen looked even better in person.
Wow beautiful car!!🤩 Pontiac has always been one of my favorite makes from the 60s, and this one is pretty close to the top of the list! The lines are gorgeous and yes, the camera did it justice!👍 The paint job is fantastic, but I probably wouldn't pick this color myself. it just reminds me of ink. The interior is awesome, love the steering wheel! I like the badging too, I think the name Ventura, somehow adds some coolness 😎 another great video! That was awesome singing you guys did at the end too 👍👏😀

There actually was a 2 door pillared Catalina sedan that Pontiac built in '61 that was a true flattop, lightweight and used in class drag racing back then. Keep up the good work!

I love the translucent steering wheel & the 8 lug wheels that were so popular on Pontiacs!!! I'm partial to Pontiacs because when I was little my grandfather would get a new Bonneville every two or three years throughout the sixties & early seventies!!! But out of all of the cars for sale at classic auto Mall if I could own any single one of them it would be the 1937 Packard 115 c because it has a flat head sex it doesn’t use as much gas it works like a prestigious Packard if you know nothing about Packards and it’s just not over the top like some of the super eights and 12s could be..

Anyway, I have a soft spot for the '61 Pontiacs because my mother drove one...a Star Chief four-door sedan. It had a powerful engine that made my mom a little bit nervous. But it didn't help matters when, two days after getting the car, she got in an accident with it on an ice-slicked road.
Nobody was hurt, but mom was pretty uptight behind the wheel with that car after that. Strong engine gone to waste.

Bring back memories! I had a 1961 Pontiac Bonneville bubble back in the same blue , the trim was better and the interior was much better in the Bonneville, being a mechanic LOL at that age I had the 389 engine with tri-power, 421 heads and the 4 speed automatic transmission, I did change the steering wheel to a much smaller one , chrome with black rim , I had mag wheels , true dual exhaust and jacked up the car 2” front and rear , so sorry I sold that car , I had it in 1966 , purchased it with 27,000 miles it was like NEW . Maybe I can send a photo?
My mom had this exact same model, exact same year and exact same color. It was called Florentine Blue and I think it is the most beautiful shade of blue any car has ever been painted. This brought back real memories.

61 Pontiac was a beauty. In Canada the offering was Strato Chief, Laurentian, and Parisenne built on Chev frames I believe. Base engine was a 261 6 cyl stove bolt and 283 V8 next step up. Had one!!

The "senior" Pontiacs used the 4-spd Jetaway Hydramatic automatic through 1964. The "junior" full-size Pontiacs used a Roto Hydramatic. This was indeed a 3-spd automatic, but it was unique that it had torque multiplication, which GM considered first gear. It still hadn't shifted gears but when the torque multiplication, that was considered 2nd gear.
Also unique was when it did shift the first time, the shift was long and drawn out as the internal fluid couplings were drained, ending with a bangs as the internal gear train locked up. Because the internal gear was locked up, when it did shift into high gear, it did it with a big bang.
In 1964, the 2-spd. ST300 was added which was available on the "junior" Pontiacs through 1969. From 1970-on, they got the PowerGlide. With 1965, "Senior" Pontiacs got the TH 400 true 3-spd automatic. You could also get the TH 400 in the "junior" Pontiacs, which was common. The mid-size and smaller cars got only the ST 300 for an automatic.
Oh, that alternator is a modification as GM was still using a generator in 1961.
Thank you so much for all this information =) I didn’t know the senior models use the four-speed automatic ( original hydra-matic) I know somewhere around this time that unit gets replaced by the turbo hydra-matic. I really want to find a tempest model to review before the end of the year as well as a long wheelbase model it would be really cool to find all three and compare them because this looks proportionately correct for me and to see it on a 4 inch longer wheelbase will be very interesting =)
@@What.its.like. The first Tempests used the Corvair chassis, although they had a front-mounted engine. It also shared the Powergled transaxle although Pontiac called it the TempestTorque. 4 cyl. versions had a long driveshaft about the size of a little finger which connected the engine to the transaxle. Those which eventually got the 215 V8 had a driveshaft about the size of a thumb. Both driveshafts were supported by multiple bearings.
The Turbo-Hydramatic did not exist until 1965, which was the TH400. The first version was the Super Turbine 400, which didn't have a 2nd gear position. Only Buick and Cadillac used it in 1964. Cadillac referred to the ST 400 as 'automatic transmission and the TH 400 as the 'dual-range automatic transmission' through 1980. Buick still referred to it as the ST 400 through 1967, although it gained the 2nd gear position as did the TH 400 in 1965. The differentiation between the ST 400 and the TH 400 was that the ST 400 had a variable-pitch stator(actually 2 position), which was exclusive to Buick .
The Super Turbine 300, a 2-spd. automatic, was introduced in 1964. Internally, it was nearly identical to the Aluminum Powerglide and internal geartrain parts were nearly identical and interchangeable, but heavier duty. The forward and direct drums had an extra clutchplate. The one used in Buick had a variable pitch stator(2 position). The one used in Pontiac and Olds didn't. The Monkeemobile, built from the 1966 GTO used in the T.V. series, "I Dream of Jeanie" had a ST 300 and did NOT have a variable-pitch stator. And yes, I have seen the car close-up and it only had one electrical wire going to it for the passing gear kickdown. This was when I also met and talked to George Barris at the SEMA show. Those with 2 wires usually had the variable-pitch stator, but in the last year(s) of the ST 300 was used for emission control, for a high gear switch.
The Buick Special was re-introduced for the 1961 model year, having the new V6. It also shared it's chassis with Corvair and like the Pontiac, had a front-mounted engine, but the transmission was directly and conventionally attached to the engine. Although it also had a Dynaflow automatic, it was unlike the other Dynaflows in that the gear reduction planetary gear was located inside the torque converter.
Jay my best friend bought one in the exact same color in 1962 it was a 389 4bbl with 3 speed on the column. It was an outstanding car for the time. 9 miles to the gallon that's tough to take.

The black power window switches as well as the power windows themselves are so totally out of place on this car.

Totally agree it plays into yesterday’s episode I personally just don’t get it. I’d rather have crank windows less to go wrong. I have had windows come off the tracks with both manual and electric windows

As you may know, the bubble top version of the 2 door hardtop was only used in 1961. In 1962 they changed to a different style hardtop which they kept through 1964. This is true for all the full sized GM cars.

GREAT EPISODE!!! Really loved the SPECIAL GUEST SINGER at the end (it's one of my favorite songs, too). I wish there was a Ventura fan club as it's my favorite of all the full-sized Ponchos of the 60s. However, I'm a bit prejudiced towards the 1960 over the 1961 since I was brought home from the hospital in a 1960 blue Star Chief Vista with a white top (my first ride and I've been loving cars ever since). Keep up the good work. I look forward to every episode.

Although this was a cleaner look, my nod goes for the radical look of the 60. The 421 was a game changer for Pontiac since NASCAR was using these and brought attention since they were successful at the track. Pontiac used the "Wide Track" description for a number of years and the split grill as well. Your Daughter may end up being the next "Taylor Swift" if you play your cards right!

Those Fender fins you're talking about are actually arrows or spearheads for the Pontiac. Pontiac meaning Indian type
I once saw a CZcams that had a car called the Hemi, of course it was the beginnings of other Hemi powered cars to come. A museum in Detroit may have I'm not sure. Also it looked like a Belvedere body. Please do something on this.

Love it! The color does not really show the lines off. They came in a seacrest green that screams sculpture.
It's always puzzled me that the iconic split grill was introduced in 1959 but was abandoned in 1960.
On the horsepower rating for automatic vs manual trans cars; HydraMatic trans from that era used a fluid coupling, rather than a torque converter [no torque multiplication]. Higher engine tuning was needed to get similar performance to a manual trans.
PowerGlide, TurboGlide and Buick's DynaFlow used torque converters. The HydraMatic never used a torque converter.

I've always thought that the '61 Pontiac looked like the natural progression from the '59... They also personify that "trim, tailored" 1960s look... To me, at least.
Those aftermarket power windows remind me of yesterday's discussion here on the channel.
I wonder why the previous owner didn't go Full Taco and put the 4 window kit in the car... And I especially wonder why they didn't AT LEAST use period, chrome factory power window switches? GM used the same switches from about 1949 through 1965 or 66 on almost everything they produced.
Then they changed the switch design in 65 or 66 and used the "chrome square ones" in absolutely everything, well up into the Eighties.
But like I think the consensus was.... "There are no real answers to those questions"...🤣

That was when I decided that the '60 looked more like an Oldsmobile than a Pontiac... But they redeemed themselves in '61😁
the 61 Pontiac is my favorite Pontiac, followed by the 57, it's close though. The 61 was clean and striking, this one is a very very nice example- Bring back the bubble top! And you didn't mention those wheels! Shame on you. B y the way Eugene Kettering (chief engineer at GM) had a company build bubble tops for the 1954 corvette to improve headroom. There were 25 1954 corvette bubble tops produced.
I honestly didn’t know about the wheels going to hit this car again when I find a Catalina version Starchief Bonneville and I would love to find the Tempest I will definitely research is eight lug wheels =)
When I came home from Navy A School on my way to my government funded 16 month vacation in the Philippines, I had a beautiful, 1960 Catalina 2dr ht. One day it got drunk and committed suicide on a gravel road.. Bent the frame. It was ugly and it broke my jaw(Navy was NOT happy with me reporting for duty with my jaw wired shut). So anyway. I bought a 61 Bubble top Ventura to put the Catalinas' running gear in. Paid 125 dollars for the Ventura with a blown motor. Then I had to go off to war and when I finally got back home, my Mom said I had to get rid of my junk yard in the back yard. I had quite a collection by this time. I ended up scrapping them both. Along with a 57 Ranch wagon and a 55 Ford (which somehow ended up on its top in my neighbors driveway). Sometimes I wish I could go back to 1974 and change my mind about some of the dumb decisions I made back then.

Ventura was a model Pontiac offered from 1960-1970 I should have explained it better, forgot to add model detail and what the Ventura competed with. One day I’ll make the perfect video where everything is perfect. Lol try to be as though as possible thank you for noticing =)

@@What.its.like. hey Jay your videos are always spot on and I get a lot of enjoyment from watching. I learn a lot, too. I love when you get to the "buttons, switches and knobs" part and show the dash. It's Pontiac that fell off the cliff with this one‼
That’s one of my favorite things too there’s a lot going on with a lot of those dashboards that you just simply don’t see like for the very first time when doing a 55 Chevy the close-up of the dashboard reveals a little tiny Chevy bowties that you may never see..
I try to bring something totally different than anything else offered out there I love where the formula is now but I keep making little changes to try to improve each episode so it’s not like watching everything over and over again I plan on hitting the Chrysler turbine car again because that episode just didn’t get the exposure that I was hoping for. And I listen to a lot of people in the comment section somebody said to slow my roll and Bring it down a notch or two so I tried that but it doesn’t sound like me it sounds very robotic and I don’t like the way that that video turned out. But all of that aside if you’ve never watched it and you don’t have anything going on today it is the most in-depth Chrysler turbine video out there it explains all of the gauges shows all the gauges I didn’t get very good picture of the gauges so I found material printed material of the gauges
I would go with the 1960 model even though I like both cars.
On the positive side....fast, fast, fast. They could spin the tires when punching it at 35mph. The only car I was in that buried the speedometer and would not stop accelerating. When it was at out on the street it looked like just another car.

@@What.its.like.That was like 50 years ago so I can't accurately say, but I can say that it did not ride like an Oldsmobile or Chrysler. I just remember that we opened it up on the highway for about 2 miles and when we parked it we just paused and stared at it in unbelief for a few minutes. At the time my brothers friend had a 70 GTO that they cruised around the city in so we were used to speed, but this car was a pleasant surprise.
Jay, love these Pontiacs! In regard to the black 1977 GP what size engine does it have and I noticed the odometer shows a little over 12K miles. Do you know if that is actual mileage? Thanks!

While ok, I prefer the 1960 body style over the 1961. It just flows better. The dash of the 1961 does look a little more modern.

GM had adopted the Silas side look for their Pontiacs after Lincoln came out with the 61 Lincoln with slabbed sides
That makes sense but this car did not have slab styling it was a lot going on lots of different lines.. it has the same bullet spear that the Buick Invicta has as well I should’ve pointed that out but I didn’t..

I had a 57 s88 j2olds conv. which I paid 1100$ with a lifetime trans warrentee I traded it for a 60 ford 1yr old with a friend as he loved the car and traded it on a 60caddilac conv added 800$. Traded again +800$ for 61eldorado çvt.later 63. 65eldorado çvt 67cvt 69cvt 72eldorado also a 1yr old 62chev çvt .ss 300hp 1900$ theese we're real prices I'm 81yys old the Pontiac Was my wife's I bought a 100$57chevy repainted was stolen ins gave us 1k$ we bought the Pontiac only car I kept was 66t bird çvt which was 1500$ I bought a 57ford çvt and a Honda cb350bike 400$for both painted the ford bought the bird w the money

Did the the 1960 have full gages. I know most years full gages were optional on full size Pontiacs through the 1970s
I’ll have to look into that because now that you mention it I’m not entirely sure I did reviews of both but I might vaguely remember that there was pods with idiot lights in them..
No. The optional gauges started in 1964.
I’d seriously recommend taking notes on Steve Magnante’s channel, and how he does his reviews.
I’d love to see you do your homework on each model you review and provide the obscure facts about each particular car, rather than watch dead filler.
That Tri-power under the hood not being broken down and described for the gem it was is a shame, as well as the one-off rear transaxle that Pontiac had on several models of that era, which was WAY ahead of its time, provided perfect weight balance, and would not be seen again for another 40 years until they utilized that format on the Corvette.
Appreciate the feed back most people like the format it’s ok to be different that’s what makes people watch when it’s something different what’s the point in watching if everyone does it the same way

There’s nothing “different” about content that’s devoid of learning.
Your audience can’t learn anything from crotch space under a steering wheel, or whether or not a camera will fit in a glovebox, but what do I know? 😆
I would think taking pointers from people like “Steve what’s his name” who makes an actual living doing this would be productive for you, rather than continuing to make vapid videos.

=) i’ve only owned one Pontiac and that was the Sunfire and it wasn’t very good. In fact it’s probably the worst car that I ever owned. And that’s saying something because at one point in time I had a 1993 Ford Explorer but it was a three door. That I bought to learn to drive stick on heaviest clutch of any vehicle I’ve ever driven. It was like pushing down a 30 pound weight every time you wanted to change your gear. It really sucked when you came to a hill with the point that I’m trying to get to is that car was held together by rust. The suspension was always being held by gravity. And the key cylinder for the ignition was bad, it had keyless go if you forgot your keys at home no worries you didn’t need them if you put your foot on the clutch and turn the key it would fire right up.. but it was flaky I didn’t do it all the time so it was always a good idea to have your keys handy if it decided not to start. The Pontiac Sunfire was worse than that. Candle lights and jam jars were brighter than the low beams were. The high beams you could see 5 inches in front of it. When it rained the lights were nonexistent. The only time that you could really drive the car at night was when there was a full moon invisibility at night was somewhat decent. The car is only saving grace was it was phenomenal in the snow. But that’s it it wasn’t good in the transmission line broke in the middle of downtown Pittsburgh and I had to push it off the road while people were beeping the horn at me. I asked them if they would like to help me instead of beeping the horn too which I got no help in return but they stop beeping. Haha little trip down memory lane
