De Ligt is a very good passer and has enough recovery pace to play a high line without him needing to jump out his line in fear of getting turned.. I hope his injuries aren’t a problem.
This is my first time listening to this podcast. And within the first 3 mins i got more info from Laurie than all the ManUtd youtube channels combined. I’ve been a Utd fan for 18 years.
We'll surprise a lot of people this year, although it'll take a few weeks for the new players to gel. We've a distinct style of play, our setpieces have improved, we're building a formidable squad.
A few weeks? More like a few months. With all the injuries, the form/fitness issues of players like Rashford, Casemiro, Anthony, Mount, Sancho, etc, players coming from other leagues, and the massive backroom changes, United will do well to begin to emerge as a coherent unit by Feb/March 2025.
@@chrism6315I think I'd rather have consistency in the league over just the EL. It might just be me being a spoiled united fan, but I don't really care about that trophy. And I think a solid league campaign with an actual playstyle would set us up for more success going forward
All the teams around United are getting better year on year (Newcastle, Villa, Spurs, etc.) I just don't see United breaking into top 4 at the moment. This season is about steadying the ship, fixing the squad weaknesses and establishing a recognisable and successful playstyle. Top 6 and any silverware would represent a successful season if the team is demonstrably going in the right direction.
@@AuriflammeUnited would of made top 4 if it was not for injuries last season though. Villa and Spurs started slipping as usual and we was in leading positions losing and drawing games because of that rocky backline and all that gap in mid. This season we will be on smoke mark my words!!
Amrabat’s brother - also a pro football player - said on Dutch tv that his brother was only told shortly before the FA Cup final that he would be playing instead of Casemiro, and the latter did not appear injured.
Are you for real? Casemiro will hijack the game by getting a red card. He is easily “persuaded” to alter the game by playing risky. He needs to go. “BRUNO WAS NOT OFFSIDE.. F___K VAR.”
I know this is a gross over-simplification but the giant chasm in midfield last season was due in part to the slow ass defenders (Maguire and the geriatric Evans)) refusing to push up and be compact with the 6 and 8leaving Casemiro exposed once beaten. This is why it's absolutely vital that The Butcher stays fit. Now that we have De Licht and Martinez, that means our rest defence stays sat on the halfway line closing the gap with midfield and also attack. We all saw Erik on the touchline constantly yelling at the defenders to push up
It's weird to me that everyone wasn't pointing this out. It was fairly obvious that the slow centre backs were causing the rift on the pitch and Casemiro was clearly getting frustrated at having to cover so much.
Casemiro seemed to bulk up between his first and second season at United, it looked like he spent far too much time on the weights in the gym. That seemed to effect his mobility and pace, leading to him jumping into tackles far more often as he knew he couldn't keep up. Which also lead to him picking up a few more injuries. We know from his first season that he needs a couple of games to get back into form after missing a few games. Which further made it difficult for him to build up any form last season with him regularly in and out of the line up. Add to that rhe tactica last season with the high press and him being a single pivot meant he had a lot more space to cover. While the defence repeatedly dropped deeper than they should have further expanding the space Casemiro had to cover. This summer he looks like he's slimmed right down, he looks leaner. That should go some way to helping his mobility around the pitch. While the change in tactics should also massively help him. A higher defensive line, a double pivot, wide players tucked in and more of a mid-block than a high press means the amount of space he needs to cover has been massively reduced, and he has far more support around him. His performance in the community shield was great and much more like first season Casemiro rather than second season Casemiro. I think he'll have a solid season for us this year. If the club sign Ugarte or if Collyer steps up then he can also be rotated a little more so won't have to play 55 games.
@@russellward4624 De Ligt is pretty average when it comes to top speed, which is a bit better than Maguire, who is on the slow side. But most importantly he gets to his top speed quickly, so he doesn't fall behind much and can usually catch back up if the opponent has to slow down to take a few touches.
How on earth is our 3rd choice centerback Harry Maguire?! He's behind Lisandro, De Ligt, Yoro, and at times last season he was behind Johnny Evans. I Still think Lindelof is better.
De Ligt physically looks similar to Maguire, but he's a far better footballer, and a more intelligent player. Maguire's biggest weakness is actually he is a ball watcher. He focuses far too much on the ball and doesn't scan and watch the movement of the opposition. He is drawn to the ball and tries to win it when he would be better off marking the space. This is exasperated by a lack of mobility and acceleration, meaning he can't get back into position when he's caught out. De Ligt is much smarter, is a little quicker and is much better on the ball. I'm not convinced he is the ideal partner for Martinez as both are more of a front foot defender rather than a sweeper.
Progress is top four and a trophy, or two. I'm glad Ten Hag now has a couple of allies in the coaching staff, because he appeared isolated in the face of what amounts to crap journalism at press conferences last season, and that's where the internet NPCs take their cue from. I think United will be much better this season even without the new signings. Hopefully the club won't suffer as many injuries, especially to key players. While the tactics used in the final few games of last seaon and over pre-season look like they will be far more effective. A higher defensive line, a double pivot rather than a single pivot, more of a mid-block rather than a high press. The team are far more compact, with the wide players tucking in to the half spaces. Forcing teams to play wide with no space through the centre of the pitch, then pressing the ball when it goes wide using the touchline to limit space and winning the ball back. Add that to some really good new signings, clever signings that look like they are real value for money.
It will take time for United to be Premiership title charge ready At present we are Top 4 ready and the squad just needs to bolster the midfield area and the forwards have to hit the ground running.

I need Sander Berge. He’s an improvement on Amrabat and McTominay for sure. Probably Case too. The price is also reasonable (20M). I would rather we use the 60M psg want for Ugarte to sign 2 quality midfielders cuz Case’s legs can’t go the distance and Kobbie is still a child
I don’t expect early success, nor do I expect a trophy … but I expect a better final league position. I don’t expect as many thrilling games though (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing!).
If De Ligt gets the confidence he needs from his coach, he will do very well. Since De Ligt and Ten Hag know each other really well, and DL is TH’s signing, I’d say things are looking good. DL is way better than McG in playing out from the back (under pressure) and is a good defender.
Random insights: Sancho wanted his penalty to be saved. Rashie was paid not to score. VAR is allowed to duck and hide when they’re up to no good. There is no accountability for their hi jinx or an oversight panel for their corruption. A bunch of paid twats. Without Zirkz; Yoro; Shaw; Malacia; Hosjlund; Amrabat; DeLigt; Mazraoui, etc … Man Utd still truly won that game. There is no team left to fear in the EPL.
I don't like Carl comparing MDL to Maguire. They may be similarly built but MDL is an elite defender that made a career out high line defending! Lazy comment analysis!
Seems ETH is building a team that can do both break down teams that sit low, and counter against squads with more of the ball. United didnt have that option last year.
Can you guyz talk about Harry Amass and Toby Collyer - whether they will have an energence like Mainoo? Also about reasons and proactive corrective actions on potential injuries?
Luke Shaw and Lisandro being injured last season almost nullified our entire build up and Phase 1 play. That's... criminal. That was the single biggest indicator of how awful our recruitment has been over the last decade, 2 defenders going out meant we had almost 0 technically sound players who could just keep the game ticking along while holdnig possession. de Ligt, Mazraoui, Yoro, Berge, even Ugarte are all ways to fix that (Ugarte looks like he goes in for kamikaze tackles but that's only out of possession, dude looks pretty sound when we actually have the ball) and Mainoo + Collyer developing is a good sign. We're still 1 proper CM/CDM away from completing our midfield and becoming a complete team but this is progress.
We definitely need a Sancho sale to use that fund to get Ugarte and Berge, that one switch can suddenly save a lot of problems with the squad, I know we are trying to sell McTominay, but I don't think we'll get enough for him for it to be a useful sale, considering how selling him doesn't save enough on the wages, but a Sancho, or even a Casemiro sale would've been massive wages save that could be used for transfers
Finally some sense in talking about Manchester United. No fast food football Talkpsort jib with pompous failures like Simon Jordan and Scottish managerial failure, Greame Souness who's narrative is to sack every United manager post SAF.
I think the best transition team in the league was a spin line as it suited the squad at the time, it’s not the football he wants to play. We naturally want to sit deep and pump a ball to Rashford not great to watch
"Is there a real need for Midfileder" ?? Is that a real question?? Didnt you all see what the biggest problem for United was last season. We were getting run over in midfield.. teams were just running through the middle as if we were playing with 9 men
The ‘de Ligt lost his place to Dier’ talking point is such a good example of the TalkSportification of sports journalism. Basically Trumpism for football fans. 14 of Dier’s 15 games were alongside de Ligt at centre half.
For all ya pickney: Hosjlund Zirkz Garnacho Bruno Mainoo Diallo DeLigt Mazraoui Martinez Yoro Vitek Onana is a clown. Trade him for a large oxtail dinner with rice and peas. Allow Vitek and Heaton to rotate. This starting 11 will score first. Then transition into a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1. FDM will lead the team: Fernanj - DeLigt - Martinez
"Every week there's a crisis club in the premier league, the trick is to never be it" that is some wisdom United need, and yet somehow I don't think the media will let it happen. United somehow spent more weeks than Chelsea as the crisis club last season. And yes Chelsea finished higher but only because they won their last 5 games, United were the crisis club when Chelsea were 10th. Because papers don't get sold and links don't get clicked if United are "okay". They have to be amazing or shit and there's no in between. Even if United improve and come 2nd or 3rd this season, I guarantee the goalposts move and United are still the crisis club because they can't win the league.
For me, its get 87 points how you get them and where you end up doesnt matter. Thats 12 points more than his first season and 27 more than last. It wont win us the league. But we need to make up for last season. Again it wont win us the league, but it will show improvement and be heading towards going for the league. Had we got 87 points this season we would have gotten 3rd again and would have been just 4 points from first.
"Summer of change" lol... None of our bad contracts have left. Maybe the score more points, but the organizational chaos, driven by the (real) owners and malcontents will eat away at the younger players, if they start losing points to Casemiro getting his ankles broken 4-5x/game.

This is the sort of Journalism why Fan channels were created because these guys have next to no idea about most of the players and then they come on such big platforms and give shittee opinions.
Okay that comment was off by Carl but everything else that was said was spot on. Just eat the meat and spit the bones
Facts!
I never heard that expression but I like it very much @@chishamubambe2228
Harry Maguire's a good player. He's similar in how he plays and his strengths.
Are seriously comparing actual journalists to fan channels???? 🤣🤡
Dutch harry Maguire is the biggest insult for de ligt
Laurie, Carl and David - that is THE line-up. Nice work guys.
Congratulations Laurie on the new addition to your family
I need Sander Berge. He’s an improvement on Amrabat and McTominay for sure. Probably Case too. The price is also reasonable (20M). I would rather we use the 60M psg want for Ugarte to sign 2 quality midfielders cuz Case’s legs can’t go the distance and Kobbie is still a child
I don’t expect early success, nor do I expect a trophy … but I expect a better final league position. I don’t expect as many thrilling games though (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing!).
Great Podcast. Good seeing you guys again. Let's have a fantastic season.
So glad there wasn't that Crofton guy chatting bs
Brilliant Panel.. love the content
Top 4 for this Man United squad for this coming season,With all the new players having to get used to the premiership ,Its going to take time
Love you lads talking United
If De Ligt gets the confidence he needs from his coach, he will do very well. Since De Ligt and Ten Hag know each other really well, and DL is TH’s signing, I’d say things are looking good. DL is way better than McG in playing out from the back (under pressure) and is a good defender.
Random insights:
Sancho wanted his penalty to be saved.
Midfield is still below level required for top 4
fully agree with carl on not repeating the same mistakes as last season
Fish got injured bcos Eriksen cudnt do a simple 5y pass. We need Evans.
Really good discussion, thanks Gents.
Five ex Ajax players at Utd now. So much for having a scouting system. ETH prefers guys he’s coached before.
Can you guyz talk about Harry Amass and Toby Collyer - whether they will have an energence like Mainoo? Also about reasons and proactive corrective actions on potential injuries?
REAL TALK
Sheesh Laurie & Carl. Love it, just missing Andy Smitten but it'll do.
For Laurie’s reference the phonetic pronunciation is I-O 😊
Laurie's talks are as long as his articles 😅😂, guys a proper journalist, not one of them click baity nonsense excuse for a journalist.
Id be amazed if they even come close to winning the league like arsenal. Thatd be a huge success if we judge it by the past seasons
Finally some sense in talking about Manchester United.
No fast food football Talkpsort jib with pompous failures like Simon Jordan and Scottish managerial failure, Greame Souness who's narrative is to
sack every United manager post SAF.
I think the best transition team in the league was a spin line as it suited the squad at the time, it’s not the football he wants to play. We naturally want to sit deep and pump a ball to Rashford not great to watch
ugarte is good but he is like fred, quite limited in passing. adam wharton looks like a better cdm to replace casemiro
"Is there a real need for Midfileder" ?? Is that a real question?? Didnt you all see what the biggest problem for United was last season. We were getting run over in midfield.. teams were just running through the middle as if we were playing with 9 men
I have a feeling that Ineos hired van Nistelrooy and Hake for someone who might take over for Ten Hag if he is fired
The ‘de Ligt lost his place to Dier’ talking point is such a good example of the TalkSportification of sports journalism. Basically Trumpism for football fans. 14 of Dier’s 15 games were alongside de Ligt at centre half.
21:30 De Ligt is as good as Harry Maguire !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHO ARE THESE GUYS?
For all ya pickney:
Hosjlund Zirkz
Garnacho Bruno Mainoo Diallo
DeLigt
Mazraoui Martinez Yoro
Vitek
Onana is a clown.
Trade him for a large oxtail dinner with rice and peas.
Allow Vitek and Heaton to rotate.
This starting 11 will score first.
Then transition into a
4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1.
FDM will lead the team:
Fernanj - DeLigt - Martinez
Nah that lineup is wack lol. DeLigt playing CDM? In practice, your lineup will just end up being a 4-0-6 formation hahah
@@nathanrobertson819 listen kid keep up your homework and don’t bring cockroaches home
@@II-hx9tw lol good one. Jog on champ
@@nathanrobertson819 let’s see your lineup ya scouzah …
Quality content 👍
Good work gents
They’ve learnt nothing. Players that ten Hag knows from previous jobs
"As good as Maguire"? What are you smoking Carl? De Ligt is twice the player Maguire is.
good one
No - no is the easy answer - so far business is going well
Wow Ayo really reminds me of Andy from blue peter.
KINGGG ERRIIKKKKK❤❤❤
For me, its get 87 points how you get them and where you end up doesnt matter.
Thats 12 points more than his first season and 27 more than last.
It wont win us the league. But we need to make up for last season.
Again it wont win us the league, but it will show improvement and be heading towards going for the league.
Had we got 87 points this season we would have gotten 3rd again and would have been just 4 points from first.
Love Laurie and Carl
Carl on the ball my man
United gonne be great again
Yes.
How can we forget about the medical team, they've been horrendous
How rhe hell can you say that an inexperienced coach like Fletcher is a good idea, do you see Micah Richards as coach or TD at City
“Dutch Harry Maguire”
"Summer of change" lol... None of our bad contracts have left. Maybe the score more points, but the organizational chaos, driven by the (real) owners and malcontents will eat away at the younger players, if they start losing points to Casemiro getting his ankles broken 4-5x/game.
“None of our bad contracts have left” is it their fault? Is INEOS able to force football clubs to take on ridiculous contracts?
They can’t tear up contracts, they can’t clear the decks overnight
lindelof is better than maguire according to stats but he's not british so
The manager will have at least 2 seasons under knew ideas from above
These guys r great journalists for The Athletic yes, but I cant get the thought out of my head. Even as an Aussie that Laurie with that hair- looks like that BBC radio host. The one that does Unpopular Opinions aha name escapes me, anyway great journalists even with my LFC bias. Still come here in spite of it being a United video cos of that. Edit- Greg James aha found it, but probably the other guy Grimmy more accurate. Sorry for the tangent aha amazed if anyone reads this and doesnt think its out there. Good vid
So glad critchley is not on this one. Ogden part 2
Who told Laurie his hair looks good like that?
Did this guy call De Ligt as good as Harry Maguire!!!! Please put some respect on De Ligt's name.
Tall boys is a FM24 tactic.
Only an English pundit would say Maguire is as good as de Ligt lol. Maguire can’t lace De Ligt boots.
Totally not impressed with this obsession with ex-ajacied. Antony the prime example - Utter useless. 'Good' in the Eredivisie.
Maquire as good as De Ligt - [and I'm no fan of our nr.5].
These two are obviously not good enough for Bayern but we sign them. 😞
The PL is a different beast, where there are no 'prisoners taken'.
Concerned. 😑
It’ll turn to horror stories.
Hope I am proved incorrect.
Heads Gone 4 Life 😢
lorry and the frogman hell yes
Did Carl just say DE LIGT is as good as HARRY MAGUIRE? 🤨🛑
Talk sport and other british media outlets should learn from the Athletic on how to discuss about a football club professionally and not push their biased agenda all the time
Top 4 aim bit realistically I'll take 5th maybe 6th if we pushed but marginally failed in top4 and ofcourse try to ein Europa
De ligt is alot better than maquure
Really hoping we are more aggressive in moving players out too, in years past players could just stay and the club would just sit there and then if they had a good month give them a new contract
And how exactly do you think that works?😅
@@colouredIncognito You just put up a price sticker on them and someone buys them. Duh.
I put a 50p sticker on Lindelhof at the local car boot. No takers.
Dont know wht u guys were watching. Casemiro still looked less than average. He cannot play this season.
Btw, Adam wharton is just gonna b us v city. Everyone else is stacked already. And our only chance is 115.
