  • How to fix your water failed plastic water pump with JB-Weld. I was stranded 2 hours from home with only a few basic tools when my water pump decided to fail. So I decided to fix the water pump with JB-Weld so that I could get home where my real tools are to replace the water pump. Well it worked great! The JB-Weld saved my butt!! BEST GLUE EVER!!! I hope you at least found this video entertaining if not educational. :P
    BTW this is my 300 video!
    Keep exploramenting and thank you for watching!

    Wow! I was watching and thinking, "There is no way that is gonna work. No way." Holy f! It worked! OMG!! We are not worthy. MakerJ101 is da MAN!!
    I've got a 2001 VW New Beetle TDI with over 125K miles on it. It might still be running on the original water pump unless the shop I took it to for the 60K timing belt change replaced the water pump. I think maybe they were supposed to, but I can't remember. Did not know that they make them out of plastic on a VW! I just replaced a water pump on my 1995 Chevy G20 Van at 163K miles, so yeah, even the metal ones don't last forever.
    Amazing that you were able to get access to the backside of the water pump like that. Even more amazing that you were able to figure out the problem and jerry rig a solution with JB Weld while out on the road with minimal tools like that. Good job bro!!

    Glad you made it home. I was not sure the JB would hold once the engine got up to temp but leaving out the thermo was a great idea.

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101  Před 7 lety

      +fredintheshed1 yeah that was one of my concerns too. Before I came up with the idea to use JB Weld I thought to just leave the thermostat out and hope natural circulation and whatever the water pump could still pump would be enough.

    I have heard this many many times on J-B Weld. I have tried it at least a half-dozen times on various different projects. I have to be honest, it is failed me every time. I don't know if I'm just not holding my mouth right or what. I try to like it. But, it just won't let me.

    If you want to know if your coolant pump is running you can remove the radiator cap and rev the engine, the fluid level will drop.

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101  Před 7 lety +1

      Hmm well VW's don't have radiator caps. The only cap is on the reservoir which is part of the loop unlike most cars. So you might be able to see a small drop, but I don't think there would be much of one.

    • @Robonza
      @Robonza Před 7 lety +1

    • @ThePCfreak2011
      @ThePCfreak2011 Před 7 lety

      Makerj101 in the VW you can see a jet of water coming in to the expansion tank that will tell you that your pump is working or take the cap off and take the hose off the side of the tank and see if water is being pumped to the tank.
      Obviously don't take your cap or the pipe off when it's too hot.

    The drive pulley on the pump grinding into the housing may have been a failing bearing. Happened to a friend of mine on a Hyundai, it broke the timing belt and destroyed the head because the water pump bearing gave up.

    That as almost as dangerous as Cody's hand pump. Still awesome. I have a 1970 ford f-100 and the carb leaks gas, still runs good. I also have a 1980 ford f-250 that is used for plowing and the throttle body sensor is broken so it constantly runs high. Cant fix it because its rusted so theres nothing to attach it to.

  • @Alex4ndru1989

    The pulley was grinding into the castings because the waterpump bearing was kaputt. I always change my water pump at about 60k km to avoid that happening, although it doesn't show signs of wear. I do this because when i bought the car the owner told me he has changed the timing belt kit, and assumed he changed the water pump aswell, but he didn't. The water pump shaft was so tilted that threw my timing belt off the pulley and wrecked the engine. The timing belt was indeed brand new..

  • @aaronbruckelmeyer
    @aaronbruckelmeyer Před 7 lety

    the water pump spins the same speed as the crankshaft. when you do the tim in ng belt you'll notice it's pulley is the same size as the crank pulley

    I used JB Weld to repair a hole in my transmission and it held for about a year and a half till the car finally died.
    The alcohol you used to clean it with may cause the plastic little part to deteriorate.
    You can use one of those cake frosting appliers to apply the JB Weld at an angle to reach in there better. Those cake appliers are not made to hold JB Weld for long periods of time so they are a 1 and done deal. Hope I was of some help.
    Holy crap are you clumsy or what? At least you have the intelligence to do repairs like this. It will not hold forever so get it fixed properly when you can afford to.

    Great repair! Though, you said the car had 180K miles on it? As far as I know, most of the times the water pump gets replaced when changing the timing belt right? So the previous timing belt change that didn't happen? The pump is original, so you really can't fault the pump. Plastic would be fine for the advertised lifespan for the pump, if metal is not necessary, they just use plastic I guess. Good thing it's fixed and has new belt and pump now! Don't want your belt to snap..

    Try casting the impeller out of aluminum.

  • @stefantrethan
    @stefantrethan Před 7 lety +2

    The bigger the gob the better the job. ;-)
    Maybe the bearing failed, the shaft got hot, and that cracked the plastic?
    I don't see how the pulley can grind into the casting if all is well with the bearing...

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101  Před 7 lety +1

      That sounds very plausible. I'll have to take it apart and see what the bearing looks like. Still the cracks tho. I'd think the plastic would melt.

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101  Před 7 lety +2

      Tho it is bathed in coolant sooo....

    • @stefantrethan
      @stefantrethan Před 7 lety +1

      Maybe it is some thermoset plastic that doesn't melt, given how brittle it is? I've seen cracking like that in plastic gears on metal hubs, looked like the plastic had shrunk, but it was much more ancient stuff.
      Anyway, I think with the horror stories about seized up water pumps shredding the timing belt, and causing the pistons and valves to collide you were lucky.
      Also, that you could even access the pump water-side from the thermostat hole was kinda neat.

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101  Před 7 lety

      +stefantrethan probably something like that. It feels like it has a ton of glass in the plastic. I think adding glass filter increases the temperature resistance. Yeah I was pretty darn lucky lol

      on my mk4 golf ive had my waterpump bearing fail and actually break into peaces so the pulley wobbled around and the belt almost flew off... luckily it didnt and the engine is still fine it would be a shame if it broke it only has 80k km on it :D

  • @peterdambra6387
    @peterdambra6387 Před 7 lety

    Pretty cool fix kid. But I'm pretty sure you would have gotten home on the 2 hour trip by simply removing the thermostat alone. Releasing the pressure cap would also help some.. Then you could have fixed it in a nice dry spot.

    @chrishenkel2194 Před 8 měsíci
