Some Graffiti Is Legal

  • These days it's not that hard to get started painting on walls, and you don't even have to be an evil-doer! The legal walls scattered across the town let anyone give it a go.
But that's just six walls in a town with thousands of writers and thousands of blank walls. Could we create a system that pairs these two up instead?

As a kid in 2005ish elementary we had to write ideas to the government and I came up with the idea of adding graffiti parks and I believe this somehow influenced this type of walls

Didn't know about those Murs Légaux! And after watching your other videos about graffiti I though it would be cool to try!
Thank you for the nice informative video once again!

Love the idea of connecting artists to walls.. I did something similar a few years back - but way up in Mishkeegogamang First Nation, in Northern Ontario! My brother put together a short doc on that story here if you're interested! I bet you've crossed paths with the artist we worked with! czcams.com/video/P_Og3IRMS04/video.html

Really difficult to appreciate tags and throw ups when they appear on brand new infrastructure like the one you showed on Saint-Jacques et Turcot/Décarie.
Although I understand the idea of "you have to start somewhere" it still gives me the "that's why we can't have nice things" vibe.
Montreal needs more legal walls and artist need to respect more if they want more repsect.

Given our reality all we can really choose and control is how to handle it. Those examples you mention come up in the second video in this series, and they should have been cleaned off months (if not years) ago. Those investments are paying huge dividends for their creators right now.

@@PaigeMTL That I'll agree with, clean it quick so the taggers don't feel likes it's worth working on your wall. I know.
But again. I love a good graffiti, art is art.
I love what Downey said. Ask if you can use the wall. A Lot of people will say yes.

People (like myself) go out of there way to travel to Montreal because of all the graffiti in the streets. It’s just paint, it’s not really wrecking anything. Go check out New York if you think it’s “bad” in Montreal

There 2 differences when it comes to writing graffiti, being a graffiti artist and then being a graffiti writer. The graffiti artist will only be in it for the painting aspect of it and usually only hits public walls, a graffiti writer is someone who gets there name up by any means legally and illegally (paint, markers even scratching into glass) It doesn’t matter.

Hey Paige. Is McGill really the Harvard of Canada? And what are the attitudes of ppl in Montreal. In other words- Is there a view that it maintains an English elite within Quebec or do they just graduate and move to Toronto or elsewhere? I love your videos on Canada, Quebec and Montreal issues. Great work

I'd say any place that is known for its education sector often is because it's oversized realative to the cities population. Meaning students are likely to move elsewhere afterwards for work. Like Boston or Oxford. Montreal isn't that extreme, but it's moderately so. It's pretty common to meet a Canadian who has spent a few years studying at Concordia or McGill.
Harvard of Canada isn't too bad a comparison, it's an old well regarded research university, and just like Harvard probably not the best in the country while being the most well known. It has it's strengths and weaknesses. There's a weight to the name, looks good on a resume. I've never heard the Anglophone elite thing, it's really more operating in that international university pool with other top institutions. Not an automatic shoe in for a rich kid from west island.

The only friends I knew that went to McGill had parents who worked there so family discount is an incentive. Also, university prices for Quebec students are crazy cheap (even at McGill) so a lot of Quebec Anglos choose to stay in province and there are only 3 English language universities in the province, 2 of which are in MTL.

What if i just want to practice the medium, not a specific piece?
All the legal walls have nice pieces up so i dont want to cap those, kinda forced to either use cardboard at home or bomb illegally.

I had all this in a bit that I cut from the video, but there is a graffiti shop called Le Sino which is right beside the legal wall in Hochelaga. You can walk in there, literally do the "Hey, I'm new, can you help me?" and the person in the shop will set you up with your first box of paint and caps. There's actually a lot of people on CZcams showing techniques and stuff.

Get yourself a blackbook and at least have some artistic skill before spraying that brick 😜
