They tried again in Xbox Play Anywhere and it actually works and the same concept as Windows Live. Like cross play and cross achievements
At least i can play Fortnite or Apex Legends or League of Legends for FREE.

@Tidder T wdym I corrected myself? This comment was a year old and at the time Xbox play anywhere only meant between Xbox one and PC. Now that the new shit 9th gen consoles are out, the series consoles are included in play anywhere

Oh shit, I finally understand now. THQ Nordic released a remaster of Red Faction Guerilla and added a new map to multiplayer. It's a giant graveyard and towering over it are the letters "GFWL," those letters being some of the only destructible objects on the map.
That’s basically THQ’s way of saying F&$K YOU GFWL!
this is how denuvo is going to be after 5-10years when devs refuse to remove it from their games
Some games used GFWL for the multiplayer service. Now that it's over, so is the multiplayer. Even though it's over it doesn't stop being terrible

Fallout 3 has been updated to remove Games for Windows Live.
Yeah that really surprised me.
And is now almost unplayable and with no achievements. Funny how that works.

I wanted to play Fallout 3 on my PC which has Windows 10. I needed Games for Windows Live in order to actually play it so now I can't play at all because the service is dead. Bummer.
The service isn't dead you can still play it if own the retail disc or just torrent it

Even today you can play GTA IV on GFWL and GTAC with no issues. The servers are still up
It is nowhere near as bad as Denuvo. It worked well only at the end. It was basically the anti-Steam client attempting to keep games decentralized while keeping all the same features people wanted. Unfortunately, they took too long to get it to a good state and by the time it worked, nobody paid attention anymore. What could have been would have been closer to GOG Galaxy, which we at least have now.

Funny thing, if you were to download a pirated game or instal a game that you had lost the key it came with, every key worked with all games with windows live, played SF4 pirated online with the Juiced 2 key.

2023. I just somehow managed to get section 8 prejudice to work (don't ask what witchcraft I used, I don't even remember like half of it) and it is still screwing me. I am honestly half tempted to try the steam removal method on it to see if I can magically get that to work....
I'll update if I do but otherwise just another game that's been cucked by it
Hi there, I have a question. Why is Games for Windows Live still working for me? I can log in without problems and play GFWL games like DiRT 2. How is this possible?
Late Response but Microsoft officially closed the MARKETPLACE and not the service as a whole.

i also use gfwl sometimes but for example gears of war or resident evil 5 nobody play anymore but the service is working fine
Getting a physical copy of GTA IV before they released the complete edition on steam, it was really a complete dog shit experience.
@Tidder T I actually bought that complete edition on steam later on when I got a decent PC. I got that old disk version with multiplayer in 2012 lol
i bought original sealed gta 4 gfwl that came with an code, the code didnt work, but i bought used resident evil 5 gfwl, and came with a worked code that can even activate pirated gfwl games.
But The Multiplayer Was Removed In The Complete Edition

I remember buying a physical copy of Halo 2 on PC and the fresh CD key DID NOT work when I tried to use it so I could play online. GFWL was such a broken system....

Can somebody kindly tell me why people hate GFWL? I never faced any bugs and the interface was pretty good.

I bought Empire: Total War for GFWL from my local Goodwill last year and it didn't even work

I liked GFWLs 2007 UI. Felt like a weird mini blades dash. Other than that thank god its gone. The only game I could never fully patch it out was the PC port of Gears of War.

Actually, it still works. I use it on windows 10. It lost some of the features, like the marketplace and servers don't seem to work anymore. I actually like it. The interface looks oldschool, simple and nice.

at least everything with "Games for Windows" tags on it's covers that I played are nothing but pirated ones
i had to get a keygen for CD Keys for Fallout 3 for achievement support

it still works but you need an modded verson of gfwl

Window Vista was objectively the same OS under the hood as Windows 7, hardware at the time was just not ready, the majority of Vista users installed it on old Hardware. New hardware at the time could run Vista perfectly. By the time Windows 7 came around the majority had already updated their old win XP machines.

i dont know what people are anger about, i own just one copy of original resident evil 5 that came with an code to activate almost any game for windows live game even pirated copy, the only game never able to work was the bulletstorm.

i remeber played grand theft auto 4 with gfwl back in 2010 without any issues, but when i tried in my windows 10 i couldnt even installed at all, i had to istall mods and modify files to make it work, and only worked sometimes, but without gfwl and i own the original cd.
the xbox app for pc is better than steam.

I have gotten GTA 4 to work off disk/a legitimate copy with achievements and online working.
It only took a full weekend of troubleshooting.

iam with this problem in GTA 4
Trick is to apply patch 7 before patch 8. You need that Social Club splash screen that comes up with 3 buttons and you need to press Play Offline (GFWL still works/you're online) and you only get it in patch 7.

If you had windows live back then, you could have switched to steam. Steam was still a thing around the late 2000s
windows live was not just gfwl it was whole platform with was discontinued in 2012

Tbh I liked Games For Windows Live, it always worked for me.
thank god we have the xbox cloud on windows as the massive upgrade leagues beyond what Windows live tried to be. And Xbox cloud isnt all that great either with its snall library.
