    my style mistake was when I transitioned from fast fashion to second-hand clothing, I always bought ill-fitting clothes and called it "oversized" but I learned that there is a limit to oversized that is flattering. And the best skill I ever learned was tailoring so it helped me fit better in my second-hand purchases.

    • @amikrenzel5788
      @amikrenzel5788 Před 3 lety +73

      I also thrift a lot of my clothes and being a seamstress my whole life I am careful to try to alter the fit on things that are too big.

      @CeCe1066 Před 3 lety +80

      I relate to this sooo much. I’ve donated or sold a lot of my first (many) thrift store purchases. Many of which were ill fitting. In the beginning, I was just so focused on shopping more ethically and all the low prices that I didn’t stop to really think about how the clothes fit me, how I would incorporate it into my closet, etc. The silver lining is all these bad thrift purchases have at least taught me what styles and clothing to avoid. Nowadays I tend to leave the thrift empty handed, but usually I love and actually wear the stuff I do bring home.

      @DailyHelenJ  Před 3 lety +67

      Can definitely relate to this, thank you for sharing. I did something similar where everyone was recommending oversized so I figured anything looser was ok, and you can imagine how they looked haha.
      Also 100% agreed on tailoring, would love to learn a little more myself but having my items tailored to fit well has been one of the best things in making a lot of pieces look 100 times better.

    Honestly, as a guy, I can really incorporate these tips in the video. Especially the minimalist look. I've been in a minimalist phase for maybe 6 months and I realized, it just looks like my outfits all look the same but just different shades. I need to experiment more or at least accessorize.

    I dont care if high waisted flares or wide legs ever go out of style. I feel the most confident, comfy and on point wearing them with a crisp fitted top, so I'm not returning ever to skinnies ot straight legs ever❗😃...if that the bootcut is a fair midway but I love big comfy pants- jeans

      Skinny jeans made me so uncomfortable but for a while, it was impossible to get anything else in the women's section. I'm glad we get more diversity now, but I always have to laugh when fashionistas go "don't worry about what's in style just go with what you like" and they just happen to like whatever is in style.

      @@Quinn-wh1nv Exactly! I eventually had to cave because the only options were skinny or superskinny and jeggings or leggings. Whenever I was finally able to purchase 100% cotton denim baggy jeans, my colleagues went "oh my gosh, you drastically changed your style!" lol

    A pretty horrible outfit combination I’ll never forget was a low rise denim mini skirt, fake yellow Ugg’s (yes. Yellow.), crimped hair and the real kicker… an ill fitting t-shirt that I’d fringed myself and spray painted to say “bat girl.” I didn’t even like batman that much….
    To be honest, in a strange way I’m kind of proud of it though. I was so young at the time and really exploring not only my style, but myself back then. I definitely won’t be wearing that outfit EVER again, but I admire the young me who was so fearless and so willing to experiment.
    You, my friend, completely radiate elegance though!! I LOVED this video. Definitely rethinking some of my style choices and how I can elevate my wardrobe (and avoid more incidents like the batgirl fiasco of 2009).

      Are you kidding me? That sound fierce!! I wore low rise flared jeans in high school, sometimes with a pink skirt over it and a green t-shirt that said "Give a hoot, don't pollute" (with an owl on it). And I would not give that era of my life up for any polished insta-style. I am sorry for every teenager that follows the minimalist style, because faShion is FUN!

    My style mistake was forcing myself to buy bright coloured and patterned clothes bc I thought I had to have them in my wardrobe. I’d always end up getting rid of them. Now I buy only neutral and basic pieces but I’m really happy with it !

      I have a lot of neutrals now and my clothes will go with each other, but I'm sensing a stirring up within my spirit to stop with the freaking neutrals😅. Colour and Patterns are calling to me, but their voices are faint so I'm only going for just a tiny bit of colours right now, keeping in mind my undertones. Before I end up with the crazy wardrobe that sent me to neutrals in the first place.

    1) practical tips: they are easy to follow and apply
    2) self analysis: I love how she chose pics from her own Instagram. Her progress makes this video very relatable and encouraging for me.
    3) the idea of having beloved staples instead of having a brand new outfit every time makes it easier for us to understand and apply to our personal experience.

    I love your videos! ❤️. A big style mistake for me was wearing tops that were just too long or oversized for me. Many retailers do not have a petite option so I settled for items that really didn’t fit me. Many of which just hung in my closet and when I did wear them I didn’t feel confident in them. I am now supper aware of the fit of pieces on my body and don’t settle for anything that doesn’t fit properly and flatter.

      Love this! as someone who has repeatedly tried to make straight and wide leg jeans work for me, (as those have become more popular) I am sticking with my skinnies, but love that more people are embracing the silhouette that works for them, rather than what is most popular.

    I agree on oversized clothes. Emma Hill styles linen shirt and pants and she looks so good in it. When I put oversized linen shirt and pants ( I am 5’2 for reference) I look like homeless person 😆
    and agree about trends too. I really like how doen blouses looks on you. When I got myself similar one I didn’t feel comfortable in it, not my style... so I guess we all live and learn something:)

    My favorite go to outfit it's a midi or maxi dress. It's one and done and it always look feminine and polish. If I want to mix and match, I will wear a wide leg trouser with some cute tops. I am not wearing skinny jeans any longer. Wide leg trouser look so much more expensive even with a simple top

    For me, honestly, fashion is for fun. I wear whatever I feel comfortable and I like it and I confident about that and it matches my personality. Sometimes I challenge myself to try another type of outfit but still make me comfortable with that.
    If you too analyse yourself, try to fit it in the society or fashion guru, you will always feel something missing or wrong.
    Have fun with fashion and be confident.😉
    Also, outfit that we choose needs to be practical on daily basis.
    We are not model on the catwalk..
    We don't want make ourselves suffer in the name of fashion 😅

    • @DailyHelenJ
      @DailyHelenJ  Před 3 lety +4

      Agreed that fashion is meant to be fun :) However, for me personally, one of the things that I enjoy, is to find a style that I love and that suits me.
      I think reflecting can be great in that I might stop buying certain pieces that I won't wear (so minimising this type of consumption) and figuring out what I didn't feel good in so I can create better outfits in the future. This process is quite fun for me, but definitely there's no pressure for everyone to do this :)

    Why only 'nude heels' with those loose denims in the first outfit?? "Any heel" for that matter will balance the boxy silhouette of the denims and not just 'nude heels'.(Nude heels will just make you look taller) You mixed two points together in my opinion!

    The half tuck is great.
    Over $400 for a pair of sneakers! Over my dead body 😂
    However, white jeans. Yeeiiii. I love them year round. Mango has some that are off-white (ecru). Thick enough to hide lumps and bumps and are not see through.
    Blazers. Love them. Get a linen blend if you are in a hot climate. I know you hate linen. I think it is chic. Also when it is a bit wrinkled. Maybe I am weird.
    Pointed shoes. Why did you only show high heels? The Vivavias are GREAT and comfy.

I have really worked hard to try to have shoes that will work for the kinds of outfits that I love to wear and also fit my lifestyle. Comfort is always high on the list for shoes because if you are miserable and your shoes are cute that is just not a good thing.

    The pant length/heel height shuffle is a pain with the new longer pants coming in, which I do love, but don’t work with my flats. It’s hard during the summer because my pants leg gets between the my heel and the sandal footbed, so I’ve been looking for covered heel sandals.

    Viscose is actually more breathable and cool than linen, I think it’s a great fabric. Some viscose fabrics, like modal, are used for cooling in athletic wear.

    • @agam406
      @agam406 Před 3 lety +2

      Not really. And viscose wrinkles a lot, so if it does not, it's sometning artificial or chemically changed (may be unhealthy).
