- The night of October 16, 1998 will long be remembered as one of the worst nights of flooding in Texas history. Raging currents, howling wind and rain, make the nightlong search and rescue effort that much more difficult. Rescuers must battle the elements to save victims suffering from hypothermia stranded in overturned vehicles and flooded houses.

It's frustrating how unrepentantly the older couple is retelling their story. I feel sorry for all the firemen and rescue workers that have to risk their lives to save those that refused to listen and evacuate.
"No one died in Wilson County."
Well, not for a lack of trying...
yes this stupid couple shouldved had died in that flood. sorry but true. hey were 4 hours away from this flood but they decided to come back to save their belongings instead of their lives. this people did so many errors. thank god they had a son that didnt give up on them.
I agree nobody listens nowadays
They were safe and went back! SMDH
They basically went from the frying pan into the fire. That's a stupid decision they made.
Lesson of the whole video, 5 seconds in, LISTEN AND LEAVE WHEN TOLD TO. YOU ARE NOT RISKING JUST YOUR LIFE BUT ALSO THE LIFE OF OTHERS. NO ONE HAS THAT RIGHT.
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼✅✅✅
Or if you do stay when you were told to leave, don’t go crying for help. You had your chance. Survival of the fittest, survival of the intelligent.
Problem is that not everyone has the ability to evacuate when mother nature turns on us. The poor and disabled might not have a way to get out or the ability to move at all in the case of those that are disabled.
I'm just glad that I live in a place that rarely see's extream weather that requires evacuation becuase I have no car, no friends that could drive, no family near by, and I dont know my neighbours well enough to get help (and what I do know is that they're all families).
In the event of an evac, I'd be stuck in my stupid little first floor apartment (which at least is in a 7 floor concrete and steel building built in the 1970s) unless they setup something at a school or community center.
And yet, people don't think that about that plague we have going around right now. "Risk YOUR life and your parents and your kids? My face is delicate and needs to be free! NO I'm not vaccinated...why would I do that?!"
Ironically, "Leave when you're told to" is a problem for face-delicate people, too. For the info of anyone confused, there are many people who think that the First Amendment protects you from being told off for your stupid actions. No, it prevents the GOVERNMENT from oppressing you. Corporations are 'legal people' and are free to refuse your business...they can 'oppress' you as much as they wish to; you are free to not spend money there as much as you wish.
In less-stupid news; those poor rescuers are such heroes. "It's not fair that you risk my life, but I'mma do it anyway because you need to not die."
If a group of firefighters take the time to come to your home to tell you to evacuate, the least you can do is pack a bag and leave. Thank God for those guys and gals.
Knock knock
We're the firemen representing the town you live in, we're here to urge you to evacuate, we're looking at unprecedented flood levels.
Nah, man. I'll stay here.
That's your choice sir, we'll just need your next of kin information so we may contact them, we aren't coming back this way. If you happen to survive, reach out to us via non emergency or contact your next of kin to inform them you survived. Have a great day!
Boom. 💯💯💯💯
Seems sensible enough.
ive heard of ones where the firefighters say wright your full name on each of your limbs so we can identify your body
I’d obviously listen to that evacuation order and I would then evacuate. That is because when authorities such as firefighters urge you to evacuate they are doing so to keep people safe and they are telling you to evacuate for a reason likely because there is a danger such as a flood or a hurricane or wildfire approaching and therefore if you don’t evacuate then you or your family could get injured or killed. In addition by not evacuating you would also be putting first responders who are attempting to help you in danger as they could easily get injured or killed while attempting a rescue as for example they could be swept away by flood waters. Remember when authorities urge you to evacuate listen to them and evacuate immediately.
WE HAVE COME TO '''TRULY''' LOVE AND APPRECIATE AND '''HIGHLY'' RESPECT OUR LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS AND ALL OF OUR RESCUE WORKERS / MEDICAL WORKERS / FRONT LINE WORKERS AND ALL OUR WONDERFUL NEIGHBORS WHO PITCH IN TO HELP.
"Billy Bob"...perfect and common Texas name!
Folks in many areas should thank the CAJUN NAVY. This group of volunteers have courageously appeared to assist during many current flooding situations. Unfortunately, they rarely receive the accolades due them. Not only does the CAJUN NAVY assist humans, they don't forget our 4 legged critters as well. Aiding ranchers and cattlemen to dogs and cats. THANK YOU CAJUN NAVY.
As far as I know, the Cajun Navy wasn't created until hurricane Katrina, but they are an amazing group of boat owners who have saved many lives!
How stupid were those two for going back into the flood to save objects!
So true and they so obviously got special treatment because of their son. How convenient that "by chance a military helicopter 🚁 was close by" to grab them.
Outrageous!!! Other people's died because of them!!! And now they are in the documentary. Absolutely stupidity and mean!
28:48 stupid stupid stupid. This level of stupidity always amazes me... The selfishness to go back to the flooded area, and then get trapped, and then expecting to get rescued is beyond stupid, do they ever think of others? Also, the way they tell the story is very selfish and without any remorse, my god these people..
The only reason they were resvue was because the don thought of them and went to the house. If it was any other instead of their son, they would have been trapped.
Maybe it’s just me but if the fire department says leave and you say no
You should not be eligible for rescue
They don't deserve a death sentence for saying no, you are a cruel person.
Jenna Maughan ~ it wasn’t a death sentence was it?
They don’t deserve a death sentence but the firemen do?
Who’s cruel?
They told you to leave in the face of imminent danger. You said no, I’d rather get rescued, uhh, by you.
How’s that fair to the rescuers.
Sometimes there cannot be a rescue ...lots of people know this from hurricanes. Once it amps up, lights are out, and debris in the road there is no one coming ....
may the good good Lord bless all of you ...
and keep you all safe along the long run of your services..
What if a childs parents made the decision to stay should the child then die because their parents thought everything would be ok?
Thank goodness for the volunteer rescuers!
WHY WOULDN'T THE 4 RESCUE RAFTERS TAKE AT LEAST 2 OF THE FIREMEN STUCK UP ON THE TRUCK (ALONG WITH THE MOM & DAUGHTER) DURING 1ST TRIP AND THEN THE REMAINING 4 FIREMEN 2ND TRIP??
Yeah. I wondered that too. Maybe math wasn't their strong point.
Right, how dumb to put everyone through the extra trip
The guys on the rescue raft DID discuss this entire situation with the trapped firemen before they went to go grab the mom and daughter, so there has to be some serious reason.
You also need to keep in mind that the guys on the raft were volunteer rescue members where only one of them actually had any training to handle rapid water rescues, AND he was the only one wearing a wetsuit. It took them like an hour to an hour and a half to make the trip from the staging area to where the trapped people were AND the guys on the raft were having to paddle the entire time.
My guess is that they decided to not take as many people as possible because they were worried about being too tired trying to row the full raft back up the way they had come, and the volunteer rescue raft team might have been able to swap out some of the tired men back on the shore. The trapped firemen had been stuck outside for hours and were starting to suffer from hypothermia, so it's possible that they wouldn't have been all that useful in trying to row the raft.
It's also possible that they didn't want to fill the raft to its full capacity because of worries about getting stuck on debris due to the raft being heavier.
Regardless, both the volunteers on the raft and the volunteer firemen discussed how they should handle the situation, and for some reason they decided to do it that way. I highly doubt it was due to them making a dumb mistake.
@@roetheboat1 😣
I salute all Fire Fighters....god bless u all.... 😇🙏❤❤❤❤❤❤
The stupidity of people who drive into rapidly moving flood water, with their kid in the vehicle, is a special kind of stupid.
For a rescue zodiac with that many people on it, you need a big motor. Like a 100 horse motor. These guys were overloaded with just the rescue personnel. Despite all they had to go through, they did excellent work. I hope they were able to get a larger motor for their boat.
I think if people refuses to listen to an evacuation order. They should then be 100% responsible for getting themselves out if they get trapped. Rescuers should not have to put there life on the line. For people who refuse to listen. Or they should have to pay 100% of the cost of there rescue.
Agreed 💯
These are the "country dumb". No choice but to leave them and move on to others!
For the couple that went back... What were you gonna do? Stop the flood from entering your house?? How'd they ever think they could save anything 😑
You sound like somebody who never owned a house
Thats so heartwarming to end it there on that note about how the community didnt pitch in to rebuild the couples dream home after they'd already lost a house in a massive flood already before that happened again
I have lived in Texas my entire life and we really are like this.
Oh my house was destroyed in a flood? Let me put a new one right on top of the same location.
Evacuate? Sckmevacuate! All I need is my truck, my dawg and my cooler full of Lone Star.
@Marisela Cantu You are not wrong.
@Marisela Cantu I spent most of my life in Corpus Christi. My ex-FIL is actually from Edinburg. Been living in Austin for around 15 years now but I would like to leave the state entirely.
Crossing fingers you make it back soon.
No offense or judgement intended, but those who don't evacuate when asked are not only putting themselves in danger. They are endangering the rescuers who come to save them. It's not just about "Oh I'll be okay", because there is that chance that you won't, and people will die trying to save you.
hahahahahaha lone star beer eh i remember that brand i am from canada we just drink lucky ! lol
We lived in New Braunfels and the Guadalupe River flooded three times while we lived there. We saw entire brick houses float down the river..
If I was living in a house on a flood plain, especially an area that was known to flood periodically, I think I'd keep an emergency life raft in the attic or shed or something, the kind they use on boats. It might seem ridiculous on an ordinary day, but once that water starts flooding into your house all of a sudden it doesn't seem so absurd. An inflatable life raft with a reinforced bottom I think. And you could perhaps have an attachment point to anchor it if you wanted, depending on the environment. Anyway, just an idea.
Foolish old people put so many lives at risk!! Shameful
My son was born in Fredericksburg TX during this flood ( 10/17) my husband could drive only 10 miles an hour from Johnson City to Fredericksburg. My daughter was on a church outing camping. They left the campground with the children and all the tents (along with everything else was washed away). So strange this "recommended video" came up...
Some foolish people who don’t LISTEN to professionals. Good grief
Flooded in 73, flooded in 98. 2023 is right around the corner..
🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️I put this as background noise and barely glanced at the title i was so confused I mistook flood for food, I was almost a minute in when I realized it
I'm going to pray
Lol
She was driving me nuts with the "we says alright "
Fighting with water when it keeps coming in where we cannot fight with Mother Nature and we must run.
I have had my home flooded in 2022 and from my experience you cannot underestimate mother nature. where I live in Sydney, Australia it not known for flooding. i live high on the ground flood it didn't matter how much i try to protect my home it still managed to flood my home. if someone tells you to evacuate you do so you living is so important
God bless these people
They keep referencing the 73 flood but the 78 flood was the worst with over 40 inches in 3 days.
It continues to amaze me that people think oh it's just water not realizing how heavy n swift it can be....even now people will refuse to leave their homes during hurricanes in these flood areas. ...as witnessed by the couple who leaves safety to drive right into the flood.
A gallon of water weighs 8 pounds. A fish tank the size of your stove weighs a ton. That's the M in F=MV(2). Now add the speed. 6 inches of water moving at 4 mph can knock you off your feet. Most people don't realize that and sometimes it's the last lesson they learn in this life.
I just love when people comment on videos where people die saying stupid stuff like "it continues to amaze me". Let it amaze you silently. People lost their lives, have some respect. Wanna advocate for flood awareness? You can use examples of these people who amaze you on your own platform.
This channel gives me so much anxiety
Dave Christan BRUH IT MAKES ME SO PARANOID, like before I watched this channel i wanted to go skydiving but then I saw how many of those people got stuck in the middle of the ocean
Wonder why the Volunteer boat knowing there were 6 men to rescue, didn't leave two men behind and go get the 6 all at once - they could help paddle back.
I experienced flooding in Florida and Texas but not like this. I think If I experienced this type of thing - I would buy a Dingy and keep it attached to the house for emergencies and Life jackets.
You've gotta wonder what type of mental issue these people suffer from who do not evacuate when told to. Floods, Fires, Tornados...they just stay or don't seek shelter until it's too late endangering the lives of rescue teams and leaving their families and friends worried until they know what has happened to them. They seem selfish.
And IGNORANT!
Why are they not wearing their hoods?? I swear!. Show or not, it's still wet!
Also, knowing there were 6 men to rescue, why in the hell did they not leave some back at the shore??
That couple went back??
Drives me nuts!!
Your a fool did u miss the part where they DON’T have a powerful enough engine on the raft.... THEY ALL had to row to get to them..... they couldn’t leave anyone behind as most of the people didn’t even have proper training.... instead of attacking the victims why not say something about the fact that rescue workers DON’T have the proper training.... it amazes me that u didn’t once mention that but instead blame old people for the bad weather and flooding
I thought people become wiser with age. But the old couple defied all logic.
Should have been here in Houston when we got hit by tropical storm Harvey. It wasn't even a hurricane by the time it hit us.
In terms of the flooding and the use of a raft reminds me of a titanic and how the passenger unsinkable Molly brown. Because she wasn't born rich she had experience with working therefore she rotated the paddles in an attempt to help keep the women in the boat exerting energy so they don't freeze due to the freezing cold. That was great she knew how to keep help keep everyone from succumbing to hypothermia.
can we talk about the background music at 45:35 it’s sounds like it was taken right out of PotC! Also 46:45 KITTY! Good cat mama never leave the fur babies behind! ❤️❤️❤️
“All around us there was water and it was wet” oh dear god what mental capacity does this woman have it’s a biblical flood what dya expect.!!?😂😂😂x
32 inches of rain in 18 hours thats mega rain fall to the max
Some of the decisions these people made were really stupid! Is that a Texas thing 🤔?
This could help any fire dept anywhere. Yo chief, about what Kufus said, there are photography companies that do family portraits at your fire station and you both raise money. I forget what percentage of each but Kennard Ohio, all around Indiana,Pennsylvania etc. all bought equipment they needed with the money we helped each other raise.
OMG! Exactly ….they have to risk their lives to go back and save an idiot that wouldn’t listen to evacuation! I say let them stay with their decision . Disgusting people
Awesome vid!
10:20 I think someone’s batteries went dead
xD
It's no surprise to me how many ignorant people put firefighters in dangered for their own ignorance.!!
They should be CHARGED if they have to be resuced !!!!!! Or better yet stay home and enjoy your new pool.!!!
Peopled looked at things differently then for one simple fact (there probably were others too). They never had internet. They never saw with their own eyes the devastation of these events that had taken place previously. They only had memories and other people's stories. And those just weren't enough.
Today there is a tendency to swing completely over to the other side. We see these events so graphically that we live in a fear bubble and are too often afraid to take risks.
We need to find a balance.
After TWO life threatening and historic floods that destroyed their home and almost took their lives, the elderly couple STILL lives on the same property🙄🤦♂️ GTFOH! Madness. Make it make sense🤦♂️😑
I live in San antonio TX and we still get flooding in certain areas
When the house was rebuilt it should have been built on stilts. If it floods once another flood is coming.
Once in 100 years?
@@bradmiller2329 A "100 year storm" means there is a 1% chance each year of a flood. When it happens that same 1% chance of a flood is present the next year.
@@RonPiggott And you pay EVERY year for the 99 years it *doesn't* happen.
I'm too the point that I have no sympathy for people who have the ability to evacuate and refuse. A list should be made and those people made to fend for themselves.
Smart gals.
Thought it said dangerous food haha
😂😂
i mean how can you drive your car, to a place which looks like a river and then keep driving until it stalls? What actually goes through your mind? Oh ok it's a road but at the same time a river let's go through it? Or you know that you live at a place surrounded by rivers it rains for so long and you stay. I mean you can pack you staff, go to a hotel somewhere just to be sure and if nothing happens you have wasted 400-500$ but if something happens you are safe. These people don't have any survival instincts at all?
The stupidity of some old people, who already experienced flood, it's outrageous!!
And the son is the same!!! The parents are a home, safe! Why???
Just another bangerr.
Too many damn ads!
I could be wrong, but if your house floods twice it may be time to move.
Needed helicopter rescue at this point.
_SOME PROFESSIONAL RESCUE TEAM... DOH_ 😆😆😆
I don't see why the firemen didn't take turns warming up in the truck.
Hate high waters and must bless all police and firefighters
Very brave trscuers
Why is this video over 20 years old? and its being posted yesterday?
It's a An uploaded old TV Show.
Marisela Cantu Did I say it wasn't?? She asked a question, I answered the Question. It's not a a"CZcams" show, it's a An old TV show Called Critical Rescue uploaded to this Channel. I wasn't complaining or being rude.
Marisela Cantu oh my god, what is your problem. I'm not criticizing it being in CZcams, Nor am I Criticizing the show.... I am after all Watching It! Do you read posts you pick arguments on at all? She asked why an event that happened 20 yrs ago was posted yesterday, I simply and POLITELY explained why. How old are you?
Sorry Gracie, I tried to politely answer your question, which apparently has brought the trolls out.
@@crochetwithapril There is always a troll. got to where you cant even answer a question.
after a couple of my comments I realize Florence has been interviewed because of TV. her own son was a rescuer. That’s why they interviewed her! She was selfish to put her son at risk and rescuing her idiot thoughts of leaving her stuff ……yuck !!!she got lucky that she had a son Who was the rescuer.
BUENO HERMANO BUSCA A JESUS
All the effort on production just to recreate the rescue. Its understandable why they have to prolong the 10 min. Rescue story to 40 mins.
Wow the rescue was actually 10min. Wow
What the hell "10 min" are you talking about? Go listen again, at 33:39 he said EACH TRIP was taking an hour to an hour and a half. He went on to say that the guys that were out there waiting to be rescued (the ones that original went out to save the stupid mother and daughter) had been waiting for HOURS already. Jesus, learn to listen to what you're watching.
I said the story can be told in 10 mins. My goodness gracious! When its a one hour show, will you make a 4 part mini series for a 4 hour rescue? Dumbass!
@@Hopya2024 No you didn't. Give correct grammar usage, you said the rescue took 10 minutes.
I wonder what you all think rescuers are for... imagine volunteering to save people only to complain about doing it... if you're worried about your life, don't rescue people. It's really that simple. Leave it to the rest of us.
37:00 Sorry Florence but if you had evacuated when you were supposed to this wouldn't have been necessary
anybody in this flood that happend in 1996
The couple who went back should be too ashamed to show their faces in a documentary. They put the lives of multiple rescuers in danger because of their stupidity and selfishness and they don't seem to care.
Gonna mop the water away? Lol ok have fun with that
Texas is a huge flood plane
I don't understand when they took the woman in her girl out of the mobile home why didn't they take tw0 the rescue people then?
WHAT HAPPENED TOO

Why rebuild your house on exact same spot where u lost it in floods before.? Seriously beggars belief.??😂🤔x
The rescue people on the boat could of saved them selves a trip if they would of took 2 firemen along with the mother and daughter 😂 then came back for the other 4 since they said the boat can take 4 passengers
I came in to say exactly the same thing. Why only take 2 people when they could have taken 2 of the fireman as well?
Wondered the same thing.
itfpascual can take 4 passengers...... there were 6 people on there........ they couldn’t take any more people on as it would sink them ...... those men put themselves in danger..... they r not trained rescuers if they were they wouldn’t have got stuck like that.......they just drove out and got themselves stuck..... what idiot goes so far out away from help then gets themselves so stuck that people who should be rescuing others have to rescue them
