I was the first one that graduated in my class last year and started my PhD the week after I received my diploma. I can say that I’m not bad at this but I have to be honest that this program is very bad in many aspects.
The people (professors, administration, PhD students) don’t care about you. There’s no support system. I don’t want to name the ppl but I can give you a few examples: 1. The first day I started the rotation in a lab in niederrad campus (that studies ataxia), the PhD student there told me “I’m the b*tch in this lab”. I took it as a joke but later realized she was not kidding.I received 4 for that course and later realized that she didn’t like the fact that I talked too much to her bf (who at that time worked in the same lab). They gave me the wrong reagents for 6 weeks until I found out and got all results in one week but the prof was also giving me sh*t and accused me for having neurological problem when I complained about the low score.
    2. I was working long hours for my master thesis at a lab that hasn’t published much (if any) for 5 years and lived in the false promise that they would keep me as a PhD student (so I didn’t even apply elsewhere, but thanksfully I found a lab the week after the prof talked me out of his lab). I was trouble shooting for 9 months and on some days worked until midnight and finally generated the transgenic line. But it felt like a slap on their face because it means they didn’t know many things and I revealed it by making it finally work. Advice: don’t go to lab where they are more bachelor students than PhD students. I was threatened to take this comment down but who cares about empty threat after waking up from the empty promise?
What’s really frustrating was that the administration did not care. Especially a grumpy lady who obviously hated international students (she retired after I left, good for those who graduated after me). She would hold your paper work as long as it is allowed. (In my case it took 5/6 weeks to get my diploma, which was over the limit). So I cannot to renew my visa and start my PhD contract for 1 month. She did not care, no matter how much I explained the situation. The person in charge of the program also did not care even though he seems like a good guy.
Luckily my sweat pays off and now I’m at a very happy lab and doing real cool staff. But the 2 years master program was traumatizing. Apart from what I experienced, I have heard so much sh*t that happened to the students, especially international students.
I don’t get it why a German bachelor girl who is now in this master program thought it was ok to say “it’s easier for international students to get in” which translates to “international students are less qualified”. That’s just not true. When all the German students are taking bank holiday off and hangout with family and friends or dogs, I was always working (which is the reason I was the first one who graduated and started the PhD). It’s never easy for us. And no one in this program really supported us. I wish the people who have the power to make positive impacts can take this feedback seriously.

Guter Junge ist halt ein international ausgelegter Studiengang. Aber Englisch ist leicht, man kommt schnell rein. :) Keine Angst. 😉
