    Don’t worry, not all musicals are this fast paced, Lin is famous for doing it like this,
    but most use all the first act or half of it to introduce every character.
    If you want to know how Lin works, Howard Ho’s videos explain everything amazingly, specially “The first three minutes of In the heights changed everything”.
    Sorry I keep commenting, I’m REALLY passionate about musicals, this one in particular as a Mexican born immigrant living in NY

    All the actors did their own singing in this movie! They did record it separately before shooting. Some musical movies do have the actors sing live though!! You should react to The Last Five Years, it's a movie with Anna Kendrick and they did live singing in it. The songs aren't rap-based like ITH or Hamilton, so you might find it easier to follow, but they're not like old-timey musical theatre stuff either. I think you actually did a reaction to Ariana Grande singing one of the songs (Still Hurting) a long time ago

    4:06 It REALLY depends on the musical. So with the record of In The Heights (the movie version) they kept that part in because it IS part of the song. It's dialog but it's dialog that's needed for the song to make sense. For other Musicals, Newsies for example, some of that dialog is cut from recordings because it isn't necessarily needed for the song to make sense.

  • @tiffanycourtney1028
    @tiffanycourtney1028 Před 2 lety +32

    You were asking about dialogue between songs, it really depends on how much dialogue there is and how much you need to understand the song. Sometimes they keep it, or trim it down, or just don’t include it in the soundtrack or cast recording.

    • @stiletteleray1326
      @stiletteleray1326 Před 2 lety +2

      Yeah it's 100% up to the writers what they want to include on Soundtracks. I personally like when they keep the dialogue that are mid song but many of them cut it.

    I personally listen to the Broadway original cast version of In the heights in Spotify, and they cut some parts from the talking, usually only leave the talking that has a little rhythm. And honestly, the og cast recording is a lot better at that than the movie one, I recommend listen to that one, it has many Broadway powerhouses that really bring everything to the next level (AND NINA’S MOM, CAMILA, IS ALIVE)

    Long comment, but I hope you find this helpful! If you're not very experienced with musicals and you're still weirded out by how a lot of shows alternate between singing and talking (which is fair!), I think one good way of looking at it is that, in musicals, important events or important emotions usually have to be expressed through song. And within those songs, even bigger outbursts of emotion usually manifest in dance breaks. With regard to your concern about musicals moving too fast, if it's any consolation, the opening numbers of Hamilton and In the Heights really do stuff a lot of information into them. The rest of these musicals do have songs that go by more slowly and are more focused on individual characters!
    But yeah, there are a lot of musicals that are sung-through, or have no spoken dialogue. Someone here already recommended The Great Comet. I'd recommend Hadestown, which I think is already one of the best musicals ever made, and it only came out on Broadway two years ago. It's the story of Orpheus and Eurydice from Greek mythology, but the setting is inspired by the Great Depression, and the score is a mix of folk music and New Orleans jazz. Since the entire thing is sung-through, so you can listen to the cast recording on Spotify and already get the complete story! For a sample, you can watch their performance at the Tony Awards, or their NPR Tiny Desk concert! :)

    In the Broadway version they include all of the talking bits as they help the songs transition throughout and the are backed by the music the entire time the switch to talking. This can be seen in a few musicals. I would assume that the soundtrack from the move would be the same way.

  • @pacio49
    @pacio49 Před rokem +1

    Yes, the Heights refers to Washington Heights. One neighborhood north of Harlem the landscape of Manhattan rises into high rocky bluffs and cliffs overlooking both the Hudson on the west and the East River on the east. Those high rocky bluffs provided the perfect place to anchor the Manhattan side of the George Washington Bridge across the Hudson to New Jersey. The combination of the name of the bridge and the elevation gives Washington Heights its name.
    There's two more neighborhoods north of the Heights proper, but they get kind of lumped in with the Heights. There's Fort George, and then there's Inwood. And even then, most people wouldn't know where the heck 'Fort George' is if they didn't live here. Either way, Lin Manuel Miranda is lumping all three neighborhoods into "the Heights" because all three neighborhoods are predominantly Latino of various points of origin. Which is good, because otherwise locals would be louder about the fact that he technically wrote In the Heights while he was living in the more artsy side in Inwood. And Inwood is down by the water level again, the 'Heights' part of Washington Heights ending in the 191st Street subway station where "Paciencia y fe" is recorded in the movie. But we get it. Nobody not from here would know to come here, since there are NYC natives who have literally never been north of 89th street.
    If you come to visit NYC, take the A train to the Cloisters stop and enjoy the latin cuisine and nightlife on Dyckman Ave. Best food, best party, best people. You can be "the" tourist for the evening since we get so few (and kinda like it like that - NYC is best where restaurants are by the locals, for the locals, supported entirely by regular local trade. Best food. Best drinks. Best people. Guaranteed.

    If you're ever interested in checking musicals that ain't Hamilton, I definitely recommend Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 (such a long ass title so you can just call it The Great Comet lol). The original broadway cast recording is on Spotify and it's a sung-through musical so you won't have to worry about songs cutting to dialogues 👀 If you prefer watching over listening, well it doesn't have a professional video recording as In The Heights but I have a full bootleg of the show uploaded on my channel, the quality's a little low but it's bearable. Anyway, the writer of the show likes to call it an electropop opera because it's a combination of traditional and modern music. It merges Russian folk and classical music with indie rock and EDM influences. I'm sure you're gonna enjoy it please react to it I'm begging you 🙏🙏😂
    Great Comet fans if y'all are here help me encourage Jeffrey to react to the best musical of 2017 😌🤣

    In musicals, both stage and movie, they usually have a cast recording without dialogue. Unless they produce a live audio recording for the soundtrack like they did with the 25th anniversary phantom performance, they just used the live audio. In some scenes of the movie they are singing in the scene, and some they have recordings that they prerecorded (but it is the actors from the movie singing). In movie musicals they tend to use a mix of pre recorded and live depending on the song. And the Heights is Washington Heights, its a neighborhood in New York that is primarily Latino, Black, and Hispanic, Lin (the creator of the musical) grew up in and near the neighborhood.

    Most musicals aren't this fast-paced whatsoever. Lin Manuel-Miranda, who wrote both Hamilton and In The Heights, is famous for bringing rap/hip hop into musicals. Most musicals are much more along the lines of the pace and understandability of Disney movies. If you do watch In The Heights or Hamilton and aren't used to listen to fast paced rap (especially in Hamilton), it might help to put on subtitles. My parents never listen to rap so when I showed it to them, that seemed to help a bit.
