- We get an in-depth look at Roland's new stage keyboard with product demonstrator Gareth Bowen. The VR-09 is intended for live use, with dedicated piano, organ and synth sections - is it as lightweight as its 5 Kg heft implies... or are there hidden depths? Nick finds out.

Nick doing his best to be wholly unimpressed by this bit of Roland wizardry . I love it. A brilliant stage keyboard.
Pretty silly to compare this to synths-- it's not a synth, it's a stage keyboard.
If you consider it as that, what is better out there?
I"m not aware of anything that competes, and these things play and sound great for what they do.
And if you had to walk on stage to play an unknown keyboard impromptu with a band, you want this way more than an unfamiliar synth.
All this and I"m a synth guy-- I appreciate the depth of the review, gave me an even better appreciation of this.
Nick's comment on the overdrive - "It sounds like an espresso machine"
LOL
:-) Glorious piece of kit..
Very nice keyboard and demo
Got one, works well in the mix with the M50 and XF
a great product !
I really hope they update the overdrive, vibrato/chorus and leslie in a new firmware.
Sounds Good
Will it work with an Android pad as well as Apple ?
I am looking forward to purchasing the board. I just wish that roland would just bring it out already!:)
I've always wanted a synth or keyboard with a D-beam. This could be the one I pick.
Another great video, thanks SonicState. With all due respect for Roland and all people involved with Roland's products, I would like to say that I have a feeling that Roland changes the external appearance of the product, but the sound stays the same, with variations on the level of definition. This sound in particular reminds me the JV series sounds, but there are some exceptions like the V-Synth series. Am I wrong?
Nice workflow with this keyboard! Roland does not do shiny touchscreens like Korg but this thing is much more accessible and affordable.
if you look closer a bit you´ll see that they show all kinds of products here, so who not this roland ??
this is a great keyboard for people who actually gig, and not for people who collect analog synths - and making a replica of the ms 20 is not really korgs biggest achievement )) (and, no, roland didn´t pay me for that, i just think they make most playable, well conceived synths)
Kawai
Great performance keyboard for the price; easy access to a lot of usable voices.
When showing off the drum sounds, they went to a snare sound that gave me PTSD flashbacks of listening to Lars and Company on St. Anger! I had to keep telling myself that it wasn't real! Tic, tic, tic took. Now I can't get it out of my head! I might have to end this misery before it takes full control!
Can the effects of the IPad be stored in the keyboard internal memory and be there forever?
I appreciate those that have the room for such treasures but because my personal space decreases as my children get older, I can also appreciate the new standards for throwback creations such as the ms-20 mini or the minibrute or the new mono tabletop from waldorf that I can not recall the name....that way if I do get a hold of some classic gear it will interface seamlessly. ;0)
@Spacerboy I, for one, have lots of vsts, iPad apps, and hardware synths and fx units. Yet, I can see the value of a keyboard like this for the gigging musician. If I had to perform live for a living, I would seriously consider this board.
If you "had to" perform live for a living...???
Yup. Had this happen to me with the Korg Kronos. I really thought I could do everything with that workstation. In the end it was clear that it´s just an updated Oasys with inferior hardware as quality and durability is concerned. I could have got much more for my money if I had sticked to computers and software. Korg is not even able to update the sequencer to that of the Krome. :( It sounds very good though, but it does NOT change the game.
Good’ I like it
I saw a setting called "Prog Rock Organ" how did you get that?
i want to record onto the vr-09 usb thumb drive but using the roland integra 7 sounds
Can the voices be saved and used with the Atelier AT series organs?
Are you talking about that retro MS20 mini with no effects, one note and a bunch of cables?
Is the keybed better, smoother than the one of the DS61? In terms of sound bank is this organized in a similar or better way than the DS61, sorry if question is too generic, I am new to keyboards and I need one with a good keybed not too expensive and that has a lot of flexibility with sounds and especially those of the old Korg and Roland,
I think the Roland VR-09 has the same keybed as the Roland Juno-DS61.
I need basic hammond like green onions, Kansas Carry on and Boston foreplay long time and gregg rolie santana plus old Fender Rhodes and grand piano sounds for jazz
Hey VA freaks! This is a stage keyboard!
can we talk about that iPad stand? who makes it?
How can i save m`sound? And... that`s m`next key! Juno 106 and JD 800 got ready...
;€ )
what is that thing holding an ipad?
At 4.30 ... so let's hear some synth tones ... stars demonstrating then gets side lined by yet another question ... demo is all over the place :-(
Oh Roland, I wish you would have made this just an organ.
Roland making among the best performance gear on the planet and Nick totally unimpressed 😂
Wait for the Jupiter 50 demo it gets even worse 😂🤠🥸
Roland has taken a trip with Waldo :/
240p only? :C
What if you dont have a tablet
My mistake, no cv....Still a better machine. ;0)
I think you would prefer my 70 year old german UKW radio with full wood casing(!), only analog tubes(!) and no transistor(!) inside instead of my crapy iPhone 4S with worldwide FM radio reception via 3G internet access!?
I still have stock from the good old days. How about a gramophone? No modern gear can sound like that. ;)
this one is much less preset then previous ones.
'Clavichord'! That was a keyboard instrument used mainly in the Renaissance and Baroque eras and related to the harpsichord. It would be great to have this on a Roland keyboard (maybe not) but I think you meant 'Clavinet' as played by Stevie W and others.....Slightly worrying that a keyboard demonstrator wouldn't know this stuff.
ehehehe!! :D
Well if you would like something in a performance keyboard in a "similar ballpark" how about the KingKorg. Although yes I was talking about the retro ms20 with 8 more patch cables than the original, usb-midi-and CVinterface that even in its compact form, blows this hunk of crap OUT OF THE WATER! LOL, do some research.....
There are so many amazing vstis out there....i wonder who still buys things like this...?
I did its a great little Keyboard for the price
Not bad, not good. :)
Not to be " presumptuous " but most keyboards today are Far better ' with an eye pad" ,unless you want to press ( Dam Buttons ! All day , cheers to all.,/ But not with this model , it's only used for " synths mixing ! This is a very good demo explanation ' ,So please : watch" , ps hi " Gareth" if ( Roland ) added " styles as a conventional board ' To this model , I would think ( Roland ) would do very' well out of it , - I then certainly ' would pay ' for its worth ,( as " modules" can be a pain etc ) cheers again ! .
I don't think this is a "soft" review/interview at all...Nick points out all the weaknesses of this lemon! No deep effects editing, synth engine only completely accessible via an ipad editor....Roland, what are you thinking? It's like an MC505 with a keyboard
the roland synth sound to my ears is not very impressive
Sorry Roland, Nord are the kings of performance keyboards. Korg has the lower end market pretty sealed up in terms of quality which honestly I don't see with this keyboard. Nothing revolutionary here (even though that might not be what Roland intended). I think Roland need to re-think their strategies. Personal preference of course. Others may see this keyboard as a god-send so good luck to Roland anyway.
Yawn..
too fast tutorial
Pity that Nick just stands and nods yes all the time. I would rather see him do a (relatively) unbiased review of this, rather interesting, synth. Obviously this review is good for Roland, but no so much for the educated synth audience.
This roland guy gets more and more embarassing every time
the word by the boss of roland, korg, yamaha, kurzweill, is not NEW, but THE GAME HAS CHANGED; and the name of his game is : repeat a game.... repeat again... repeat a game........repeat again.......and again..........and aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagainnnnnnnn
I hope Roland paid you loads of money to show this product....Roland need to go back to its roots like Korg has done. Screw these crappy preset keyboards....
this thing sounds like shit lol Roland must've paid you a lot of money to even touch it.
I really am starting to hate Roland. Why can't they just release a new analog Juno?
What a tortoise. What a miserable release! 7 whole FX at the same time? Really?! WOW! Roland have really gone to town! What an embarrassment. It sounds awful. 20 fx is nothing compared to the 79 FX that came as standard on 20 year old Fantoms. Roland must be a bunch of really old men sat around a large table with the radio stuck on BBC Radio 2 all day! Another pointless forgettable synth.
