Much respect to Jay Dee. He's so influential they got college courses based on his style. It's a shame most new producers never mention him.
But yo tip #1 is crazy. The bass/low end is the foundation to any beat to me. He used the sample to do it

tbh some artists that really know him, don’t mention him out of ego, makes them feel “unique”.
The fact that you are able to get, replicate and explain all those genius artists techniques and habits shows that you are a music genius yourself.
Theres a whole ass book called Dilla Time that explains J's rhythm theory. I highly recommend reading it. Theres a myth that Dilla didn't use quantize or TC (the MPC term for quantize, keep in mind Dilla used the MPC3000 as his main tool)
This myth is largely untrue, MPCs have a highly customizable TC interface and you can have entirely different TC settings on each individual drum.
Rushing the snares by a 64th note is one of the trademark drum techniques that instantly gives your beat that detroit feeling. The book covers dozens of other techniques in depth
For anyone wondering the beat at the beginning is "Track 35" of the "Beat CD #3"
I feel like at tip 3 having a background in drums comes into play because I played the drums in school and thats how I got into beat making. I knew who J dilla was back in 1996 so I was already familiar with his style due to being a huge Slum Village fan but I could always identify with his drum beats because thats how a drummer plays. Very sporadic and erotic. Black Milk who is also from Detroit plays drums the same.

Another great video. Where can one find hip-hop beats that you’ve created? I’ve listen to the albums, but they seem to be more cutting edge, modern stuff than what I’m looking for. The boombap style is one that you’re really good at but I’ve never heard a completed beat from you.
I notice tons of producers have one beat in mind when they refer to a Dilla brat but he, like you've presented, had many different signatures in all his beats
