The best concrete staining video by far I have seen on CZcams thanks for sharing!!
Your welcome. We just released another video on patio staining for beginners.
Thanks guys! Looks super easy and your instructions seem both simple and thorough; can't wait to try it out!
you are welcome.
Thanks for the advice! I'm also going to follow your steps and will send pic when I'm finished!
Awesome! I'm looking forward to it. Good luck.
Thank you! I was in the process of spraying, but was going threw a lot of stain to cover everything. I watched your video and using the broom was a product saver.
Glad it helped!
Concrete flower planters and crafts + this stain. All I’m going to say.
Thank you very much for putting this out.
My favorite part was the chickens chirping 🐔..smiles great video
😊 thank you
What a great informative video. I am super excited about working on my concrete flooring in my basement. Thanks!!
Thank you, It is easy to do have fun.
I will do my best, Thank you so much!!
Hi Kevin! I finally got my basement floor acid stained. It looks great! Right now, it's in the drying process from being neutralized. I'm letting it dry for 5 days before I apply the water based sealer. I have some small paint spots that I couldn't remove with a scraper before I sprayed the stain which I'll use water color to touch up tonight. Just to let you know, your video has been extremely helpful as I viewed it several times to get the effect that you and your wife did. Thank you for posting!! Have a great New Year!
Hey that is awesome! Happy new year to you as well.
Looks great! I had my floors done professionally about 5 years ago in a brown shade much darker than what you guys did. I’d like to make a change and go with an almost white shade this time and attempt to do it myself after watching your video. Any ideas what I would need to do to prep, strip, primer before going with the lighter color?
Awesome!.. for anyone watching planning to do this..get a 18 inch roller for the sealer! Save Time
I like the video. I’m going to give it a shot.
very nice video! Thanks
You did an awesome job, wow..
Is acid stain dangerous, and do you know if there're gray colors instead of brown?
Hello I missed how you prepare the concrete before the stain. How would I do it and what would I need
Nice color & work. You did not have to remove a sealer. Any suggestion on this? Cement interior post one year pour.
Really love video keep up the good work man
I used armorguard its the best wet look sealer but it packs a punch with the smell
Thanks for this video!!!
You are so welcome!
that is to cool.i want to start doing this staining work
You should.
Great looking floors guys
thank you
very nice!
That’s awesome I’m ganna do the exact same thing!! Thank you!!!!!!
Go for it!
Very beautiful result.
Your video, So far after watching many, is the best I came across.
It looks absolutely amazing. Great job been wanting to do this. But did not want to screw anything up lol. Great video best video I've seen so far.
How do you prep and stain concrete for acid staining?
Kevin, we have recently built, the company who stained and polished our floors were just short of a nightmare. The final result was acceptable. However, when the final cleaners went through the house allowed the cleaner to drip onto the floor leaving spots here and there. The company did come through and spot fixed the worst of them but would not acknowledge the minor spots through the house. And would not show us how to remove the spots that took him minutes to repair. How do i remove those lightened spots?
wow, that's so dang pretty.
fantastic job! Looks amazing.. I have done a lot of my own remods to my home and now looking to do this in the last area of the house that is only carpet.. Living Room. Great video, i would be ripping up the carpet, I didn't seen where you prepped the concrete before the stain. Did you have to wash the concrete or anything like that?
Thank you, We started with new concrete but washed it with simple green first.
Ok awesome thanks for the reply..
wow floor looks fantastic
It does!
I’m having concrete pour tomorrow do I need to power trowel only nothing else.
I’ve done two coats and don’t have the gloss looking finish. How did you get that? Varnish?
What shade did you guys use, the brand and is it only one color?
I've ordered the materials to do my floors, and have 1 question. After watching your awesome video your wife had mentioned she scrubbed the stain in lightly. Did you notice if that added to the marble affect in the concrete? Thank You
Yes, absolutely
Can you please tell me have you found if it makes a differance of what cement to use like white cement grey cement any paticular psi. What did you use
We used grey it came from our local concrete delivery company. Like you would use for a garage floor.
you look like professionals. Im obviously going to ruin mine tho. Btw, I really love it. But I dont know how.
Thank you for the great video! We are going to tackle our basement floors in the coming weeks. Did you sand the floors with the diamond buffer? Our house is brand new construction, and I wanted to see if this step is needed since the concrete is clean and new.
Thanks, No, we had the contractor use a power trowel and that gave us the finish we needed.just let it cure for 4 weeks before you stain.have fun!
What is the chemical used for finishing?
Does anyone know how to change the color of already existing acid stained concrete flooring?
The roller causes bubbles, Brushes are the way to go. Especially with POLY
What can i use to get all the residue off of my concrete i was going to use muratic acid but then i read your not supposed to
Here is the link for the product we use amzn.to/2q47fsA you can get a scrub brush amzn.to/2rDrON0 and if you need to a pressure washer. All the links to the things we used for the entire project are in the comments below the video.
I have some spots on my stained concrete floors that need to be resealed how do I go about doing that? Do I need to strip it and re-seal the entire floor
My understanding is you can do parts of the floor like traffic areas.
Hi could you tell all process in comments stepby step one might forget some step.
I want to remove my kitchen island and the floor underneath is not stained. Will I be able to stain it to blend into the existing stain? Thanks.
The concrete under the island should react the same to the stain.
contemplating doing this before or after sheetrock is put in. did you have any issues with doing it before they did drywall??
not at all. I think it is easier to do before.
Hey, the video was very helpful but I can't find the sealer anywhere other than on amazon for $200. Are there alternatives? I live in New York so it is illegal to ship any of the eagle brand ones here as well.
Find a concrete supply's shop.
What brand of product for acid stain and sealer did you use?
All the products we used are listed with links under the video in the products section.
Please help! I am ready 2 do my floors after some grueling prep work. The part I missed was the neutralizing part. So I wait 16 hours and then spray with amonia?
Keep an eye on it we went 16 hours overnight and then washed a spot to see if we liked it before neutralizing.
@@KevinCoyaselfreliantlife Thank you
I apologize for not reading all the comments to see if this has been asked already...
I'm staining a freshly poured patio next to a new pool installation. Will the sealing agent make it slippery when wet? If so, any tips to avoid that?
Yes the sealer we used would be slippery when wet. Possibly add some sand?
What was the color of floor you guys used?? Beautiful job guys
Mission brown.
There was talking about neutrilizing it towards the end of the video but doesn't show when they did it. Was it before or after rinsing it?
1/2 cup of ammonia to a gallon of water and spray it on with your sprayer.then rinse it off use a soft brush or mop.
Very nice video ! I have a question. Did you take all the cream of the top layer and expose all the aggregate ? Looks like you left some and it’s shading and looking great
We have a flat finish the cream is intact. The shading effect is all caused by the stain.
Kevin Coy thank you sir for your reply. Very Nice floor
what brand of product is used for the stain and sealant
Hi, we listed all the products we used up top. If you click the show more it will open up.Thanks.
Would this process work over self leveling concrete? I am looking to smooth out and level a rough basement floor first.
I don't know.
Wondering the same thing...need recommendations on the easiest self leveling concrete that does not clump and emulsifies well and doesn't dry as quick as the 5 minute types
Kevin, in the video she mentioned doing an accent color on top of the one we see being applied. Did ya'll do the accent color or is your end result after the 16 hours of dwell time of the single stain? Thanks!
Hi Haley, We did not use the second color as we got the desired effect from the single stain.
@@KevinCoyaselfreliantlifewhat stain color did you use?
I jyst stained mine and looks like the stain is washing off. Should i go ahead and seal it or am i screwed?
What do you mean? It needs to dry really well before sealing.
The link in the item description for concrete cleaner is not working. What type of cleaner did you use?
Thank you for telling me I fixed it in the description but here is the link for you: Concrete Cleaner: amzn.to/3du88Ek
do you recommend Xylene and then acid stain
no I think simple green is enough.
I'm wanting to do my basement, which obviously has existing concrete. Do I have to cut the seams like I keep seeing in all these tutorials, or is that unnecessary? I really don't want to do that if I don't have to. Thank you! Great video!
No need I did not.
@@KevinCoyaselfreliantlife ok awesome, thanks so much!!!
Perhaps you have listed them and I don't know how/where to find them, but could you show me a list of the products you used to create those beautiful floors!!
Hi Eric, yes all the products we used are in the description above just click on (show more)

@@KevinCoyaselfreliantlife For some reason I can't find where you listed the products. What brand did you use?
@@tyrod83johnson75 yes all the products we used are in the description above just click on (show more)

when did u use the neutralizing agent. that's the only thing I think wasn't specified or I just missed it. she said let the acid stain sit for 16 hours then rinsed it with water but when was the neutralizing agent added. thanks looks beautiful.
After we let the stain dwell for 16 hours we then poured a mixture of 8 oz ammonia to one gallon of water and rinsed the entire floor area. For our 576 sq ft area it took about 24 oz of ammonia.
thanks u guys did a great job !!
I should show u guys what not having a new concrete floor looks like it's a hell of a lot of prep grinders and all to get out the imperfections. your wife was right having a new concrete floor is key!!
How bad are the fumes. I would like to do my basement but maybe should wait for better ventilation option
I would vent for sure.
Is it possible to redo a floor that’s been already been stain? My contractor did a crappy job on our basement floor. There are areas that did not absorb color.
here is a link to check out.www.concretenetwork.com/fix-acid-stains/
was that one color stain or did u have to mix a couple to get that color?
Just one color.
What did you use to clean and prep?
just a mild cleaner like simple green.
We are removing 40 year old tile from our basement floors & would like to acid wash them. There is some stickiness on the concrete from the tiles. How should we remove the stickiness? Thank you.
I would call a flooring company and see what solvent they use.
How is the sealer holding up.
Great
When did you use the ammonia neutralizer? After the stain? I didn't see that in this video
When you are happy with the results then neutralize it.
@@KevinCoyaselfreliantlife thanks! I appreciate your response
Great job, thank you for the video. Did you back spray after brushing the original coat while still wet? What would you guess coverage is per gallon? Did you dilute with water if so what was the ratios did you use? Sorry for all the questions just trying to get ready to do about 1300 sq ft. first timer.
Yes back spray and no dilution.Coverage was about 200 sq ft per gallon.
Was that 200 sqft per gallon for both the acid stain and the sealer?
Yes, that is the rule of thumb for both.
Kevin Coy thanks
@@KevinCoyaselfreliantlifedid you use acid stain or water based stain?
I would love to do this in my garage. However, there are currently some small/medium cracks in the floor. Would you recommend filling each crack with a filler and/or applying a thin overlay before applying the stain? Thanks
I don't know, those cracks if not a safety issue could look really cool. I have some cracks and they give it a lot of character and uniqueness.
Please can we keep her... Shes so cute and knows how to do floors!!… Thanks for this great Video!
thank you so much!!!!
If you’re floors do have a lot of residue
from the original tile,...
(home built in 1959)
...How much more work and time is a guy looking at if he wants to stain concrete?
Residue is dark colored
Great looking Floors! How many gallons of stain did it take for that space?
3 with the patio so two inside.
Hey Kevin I have a question, could the staining process be done before framing out the house? Like maybe after the cement has been poured and dried.
it could but it needs to be cured out for a month before you do it.That is a lot of time to wait before building your project.
Ouch!! :( I have time but not that much time. Thanks for the reply back. :)
what is the purpose of the neutralizer? is it a mandatory step if I dont live on the property?
The purpose is to stop the process and lock in the color.
Is it a clear or white milky color sealer when being applied?
I seem to remember it being clear.
Kevin Coy ok, 2nd question. After neutralizing does floor need to be 100% clean and will mop streaks and footprints(from neutralizing) show thru sealer?
Yes, it should be clean you can scrub it with a floor brush if you need to. Clean and dry is very important.
If you liked that marble effect you should have done a metallic epoxy
How bad are the fumes? We plan on doing this but my fiance don't want our dogs home while this is being done. What are the safety precautions besides ventilation especially if this is done during the winter?
You want to vent for sure, don't get it on you.
@@KevinCoyaselfreliantlife did you use a respirator and wear gloves?
Hope you neutralized the acid stain when you were satisfied with the color .. if not oops big trouble in the future
Isn't that what they did with the ammonia?
How long do you let it sit until you neutralize?
About 24 hours
Would a 3rd application of sealer be over kill?
Not at all.It will give you a thicker seal.
How long did this take from the time you started cleanin to the time the floor was ready to walk on? Im having a house built and Im trying to determine if the cost savings is worth the time lost. Obviously until the floor is finished I cant have any other contractors in the house.
7 days from cleaning to sealed and cured.
So I stained my concrete and had to walk across it and now I see boot marks. Is there a fix for this ?? Just stained about an hour ago
Try spraying the area with stain and or mopping it to smear the marks.
or agitate with a brush just to break up the pattern. I left some prints to and when we finnished you really could not see them in the pattern of the stain.
Kevin Coy thank you sir for your advice
We would Love to see the tool list?
It's in the comments section.
We’re within a week of staining our floor. We’re building a shop/house and decided to completely finish the floors ahead of the rest of the house.
I have 2 things: 1. The chicken singing in the background was great! I wondered if very many heard it. 2. Several of the videos I have watched showed them lightly spraying the slab before applying the stain. Did y'all do that and if not why?
THAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN if they were in a hot climate we did not need to and that was not recommended to us.
4:30... I heard the chickens. Loved that!
I mean... 6:50
Is 16 hrs required to achieve this color? or does 4 -6 hrs give you the same results.
It was in our case you should check it in a spot that is inconspicous every few hours to see if you like it.
Thanks@@KevinCoyaselfreliantlife
How many days to let dye stain
It's more of an hours thing. up to 24 hours just check it 8 to 12 hours after to see if you like the results. leave it longer if you want it darker.
How much was the total for 15 item?
For enough supplies to do my almost 900 sq ft of flooring it was about $550 with all of the equipment a well.
I love the chicken sound
Why did you have to mop the floor?
Just a method of cleaning up.
why mopping with water?
Cleanup after to rinse away leftover residue.
Concrete floor will be loud and with echo's. Is there a way to prevent this?
That has not been our experience. I have lived on concrete slab floors for over 20 years. Some like this and others with tile or carpet. It is a popular form of construction.
Neutralize, neutralize
What kind of sealant could I use, for indoors, such as rooms, kitchen or bathroom, beside the one you used? I want a matte/flat look. I would also prefer something that would stand the trial of time, and be as permanent as possible. What kind of material or properties should I be looking when shopping for such sealant? Would urethane work? Would this work? www.homedepot.com/p/Eagle-5-gal-Natural-Seal-Penetrating-Clear-Water-Based-Concrete-and-Masonry-Water-Repellant-Sealer-and-Salt-Repellant-EM5/203075976
Please share any info or suggestion, whether what I mentioned could work or not.
(also, how many square feet of floor are covered by 1 galon of product?)
Hi there this is Annissa Kevin's camera girl and concrete staining chica :) Most sealers cover about 200 sq ft per gallon is what I have found. I am not familiar with the sealer you showed in your comment however I picked by sealer because of its long lasting properties and quality. They make a matte finish additive for most sealer that you can buy from amazon that you add to your sealer before applying it to get the desired matte finish you want.
Hi thanks for your reply! It seems amazon won't ship chemical components to where I live :( .... are there 2-3 sealer options you could recommend from Home depot or walmart?
I thought you SHOULD NOT use water after staining... 😳
Once you get the desired effect you can neutralize with water and ammonia that sets the stain.Water will not affect it after that.
You show the finished product faster than I could blink!! Why? I watched the entire video waited to the end, and then you supplied one really fast picture?
use the pause button special eddy
@@DaBuick bahahahaha
WAIT, WHAT? lasting for 4 or 5 years is a long time?!?!
Only last 5 years? i skipped around must hav missed that part. isnt worth doing if it doesnt last 20years imo
to be clear the topcoat will need to be reapplied in 5 years not the stain. just the clear sealer mostly in the traffic areas.
Is that chickens I hear in the background? LOL
probably.
