  • This week I sort of continue rounding corners but this time with the soap skin plugin (see link below). Soap skin helps you create very smooth non-uniform rounded objects. I even show you how to make tufted fabric that you can use for sofas and mattresses! Thanks for watching guys, if you like my videos please subscribe! Happy Sketchin'!

Thanks for explaining how to use this extension! I watch a half-dozen completely useless videos before I found this. (I really don't know why people post so many worthless "demo with background music" videos for SketchUp tools, with no explanation of what they're doing. It just makes it harder to find useful stuff like this.)

Excellent videos by Aaron. Explains everything clearly. Thanks a lot.
SketchUp users are fed up with plugins plugins plugins plugins.
Name plugins sucks. Why can't they simply put the plugins directly in the software itself?? Just like 3dsmax, blender, they should completely give all plugins so that people should not search download everytime.
    Big headache.

Hey Jamie, it's certainly a difficult shape to create but I think I have a way of going about it. You can do it with soapskin but if you have a smoothing brush it would help out as well; check out the Artisan plugin.
Check out the link in the description, in the first picture, try a quarter of the tent spike. Next, select the shape and fill it with the soapskin plugin. Then mirror that shape into a circle and if you have it, use the Artisan plugin to smooth the join line. Hope that helps!

Hello Aaron and thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge. I had seen a similar explanation of the plug-in from Sketch Up School. Not judging but two explanations are better then one and your version is a little quicker. I have been using it for boat hulls and seeing you explode it adds another element I did not think of. Been at this for 8 months and learn a new use or function every day. Just to say thanks and looking forward to more wisdom!!

It's possible that it's an older version of the plugin. I know the current version is set to expire April 10th, but they usually extend the time limit by a year or so once it starts getting close.
I've never encountered that problem before so all I can say is to try and find another source to download the plugin, or delete the plugin files and try putting them back in. Good luck with it.

I am trying to make a spike once I have made my skin. I work for a stretch tent company and I am trying to create the tents in sketchup but can't figure out how to make a nice "tent spike" in the center of the skin. As if a pole had been pushed in. You can see an example on our profile pic or in some of our videos. Do you have any ideas how to do this?

I will just say though, as a bit of advice- for future videos, try to avoid breathing into the microphone... if you want to continue making videos but the mic won't pick up your voice from further away, then maybe it's worthwhile investing in a better one you can have further away from your mouth.

You move so extremely fast through all of this that I've had to watch the video ~20 times to catch the nuances and various multiple clicks of what you are doing. Cool plugin but your tutorial really leaves a lot to be desired / explained. About half way through you Reverse Face (and don't explain why that matters) and then separate the skin from the original curves. I've tried that 10 times and still don't know how to do it...(Im using SKM 2015 and fresh install of plugin)

The creator of this particular plugin has a timer on it rather annoyingly. They release new versions of it every year, at least they have been. A work around I've used in the past when I've needed it for a job and the new plugin wasn't available yet, was to set the clock on my computer back before it expired. Hope that helps.
