I had no idea what you were actually attempting until near the very end. Brilliant!
Haha thanks Alicia 😀
Feb 20th 2024 you explain the process very well and the product is smashing.
Thanks Rodney 😀
That lamp is the bee's knees!
Haha thanks Glen
Total genus with the honeycomb look.
Thanks so much Tracy 😃
Mike artistic brains work on a whole different level than most people. Great job on figuring this out I think it turned out awesomely
Thanks so much Teresa, I'm mainly happy that I got to the end without it falling apart lol. All the best, Mike
I love the look when we saw the finished resin pour, it , reminded me of caramel apples. I love this piece. It’s like a honeycomb lamp. I love to see the pieces you come up with. 😊❤
Thank you so much Deborah, I'm really happy this one made it to the end 😀
Well Mike, you’ve done it again. You’ve made me scratch my head and say,” how in the world does he think of these ideas?” Wood turning is a craft all by itself with a fairly specific skill set, the creativity that adds to that is something entirely different. I love the lamp sir. Thank you for reminding me repeatedly why I am a fan of Mike Holtons work.
Haha thanks brother, this was a good one, unfortunately my brain will not let me stop thinking about an idea till I have actually done it 😀
It's important to note that silicone doesn't like to touch other silicone. They WILL melt each other. The second you put the silicone sealer on the silicone mat my brain went "that mat isn't surviving this project." I hope it was no big loss.
Interesting to know I will bear that in mind, glad it worked 😀
I’m 73 from Kentucky. That means I spent a substantial amount of my youth in the hippie culture. This piece would have been “ far f-ing out”! Thanks for sharing another wonderful piece of art!
Haha thanks so much Larry 🤣
I think this is one of the most creative pieces I seen, Mike; and your choice of the cardboard honeycomb sleeve with resin is inspired. It turned out beautifully, and watching you create this was most enjoyable as always. Well done!
Wow, thank you my friend, I'm just happy it worked, I had visions of it falling apart when I hollowed it out 😀
It’s very interesting how those resin colors blended to give an organic feel to the honeycomb. It seemed like a goofy idea initially but I like how it turned out.
Thank you! Cheers Tom, I had no idea if it would even work but had to try 😀
Hi Mike, I love the way you combined English yew wood and cardboard honeycomb, and resin to create a very pretty , functional lamp. Excellent work, my friend. Thanks for sharing. Bob S.- Ohio, USA😅
Thanks so much Bob 😀
Just stunning Mike! This is possibly your most original piece yet, and please don't worry about the length of the video - we'll all be glued to the screen for the whole time no matter how long it is!
Thanks so much, so nice of you to say but you may end up regretting it when I do a Lord of the Rings trilogy 😀
Really cool result, its almost like a candle is inside with the way the resin turned out
Thanks! Someone suggested a flickering light which I may just try and find 😀
This would look great on any nightstand or end table. Love the honeycomb look.
Totally! It has found itself on a side table in our living room 😁
Very creative. Not only the design, but how you actually created it.
Thanks so much 😀
Haha , who would have thought some random pieces and idea would come together so well. Fantastic job Mr Mike 👏
Thanks so much Geoff 😀
Hello Mike,
I do like the fact that you are not daunted by potential problems and use any that arise both constructively, positively and with great imagination. The consequential outcome in this instance is a truly beautiful and practical item that would fit into any type of decor - and makes me feel rather envious. However, I now think you should open that bottle of wine you used for demonstration purposes and have a celebratory snifter from it.
On the “gloves on, gloves off” situation - you are the person dealing with whatever you are faced with. Going with what you think is appropriate - and safe - is always going to be the best decision you can make.
Thanks so much Angela, if I liked wine I would have opened the bottle years ago but I do appreciate the sentiment. The internet has a group of keyboard warriors who just love to point out everything you do wrong, sometimes it is a heartfelt concern, other times it's because they enjoy it. I said what I said to get them to back off for at least one video lol. All the best, Mike 😀
Very striking and natural. Reminds me of a honeycomb.
Thanks Rosanna 😀
I was quite disappointed when you started to work with resin - I'd just found your channel and really liked that you go into an artistic process with the piece of the tree you had chosen and didn't do that fancy mainstream stuff. And now this! Shows perfectly that it doesn't matter what someone does but how. And a perfect demonstration of you being not only a woodworker but a great artist! Thank you so much for this beautiful lesson to take up the trend, think about the possibilities and advantages, combine with your craft, your thoughts and imagination to take the trend to another level.
❤
Thanks Wolfgang, resin is just an extra tool to help create some of he crazy ideas I have going on in my head. I will be doing more resin but this will be done alongside my usual work. All the best, Mike
The colors didn't come through individually, but together they make for a fascinating dark honey color that just works in the honeycomb cardboard and with the yew base. Great job!
I totally agree Laura, all the best, Mike 😀
The honeycomb proved to be the perfect mixer as the resin flowed to the bottom. Engineers should get inspiration from this: gravity based mixing🤓
@@BertVerschuren interesting thought!
Love the lamp. The color of the Yew and the resin go well together. Reminds me of the old lava lamps growing up. Keep the great ideas coming.
Thanks again for sharing.
Thank you! Will do Barry 😀
Great job. I imagine you held your breath many times on this challenge. This is very clever.
Yes I did, half expected it to shatter during hollowing lol 😂
Absolutely love it, Mike. Reminds me of a honey comb out of a tree I cut down about 40 years ago!
Thanks 😀
Fascinating project with all the various parts. I never would have thought to use the wine protectors in this way. And voila! Love the effect of the light! Well done!
Thanks Susannah, I had fun with this one 😀
Beautiful! I was scratching my head about how you were going to make it work for a while, but you came through nicely in the end.
Thank you so much! 🙏
Great work as usual. The honeycomb cardboard and resin give the piece a unique look.
Thank you very much Bob 😀
Mike one again you amaze us. You are are turning into somewhat of a mad scientist with the epoxy. Keep us amazed. Thanks
Haha thanks Bryce, unfortunately I can't grow enough hair to be a proper mad scientist lol 😀
Woah, it looks like a light inside a honeybee nest, behind a sheet of wax. Stunning!
Thanks so much 😊
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!! Such a creative idea and it turned out beautifully! Well done again, Mike!
Glad you liked it Tom, this was as much fun as it was hard to do lol
Oh great this lamp is right up my street I love wood base lamps and off cuts I glue up and chisel down and sand the pieces await my son's electrical skills.,...ages!
That is awesome! and clever kids are very useful 😃
Absolutely brilliant Mike have to say that your a braver man than I will ever be .
Thanks Robert, I'm not brave, I'm just ok with failing 😀
Beautiful lamp. The colours turned out like honey - perfect!
Thanks so much Sam 😀
Absolutely genius, One of the best designs you've made Mike, I love it. Yew is a beautiful wood and the resin is gorgeous shining through the cardboard honeycomb
Thank you very much Rena 😀
It's beautiful. I love the cardboard. Didn't think I would but it's gorgeous.
Thanks so much Jodi 😊
Even a small battery operated votive candle would look cool in that piece. Nice work!
It would, someone suggested one of those flickering lights which I think would look amazing 😀
You genius! You had me sitting on the edge of my seat. You know, it looks like a setting sun.
Thanks Lynette, It does a bit and I like that thought thanks 😀
Nice work! A person never knows where he might get an idea from. Take care and GOD BLESS 🙏🏻!
You are so right Stephen, you just need to have your eyes open 😀
Mal wieder eine Arbeit vom Profi. Wie immer toll gemacht und mir gefällt die Lampe sehr gut.👌👍👏
Danke Michael, ich bin wirklich froh, dass es funktioniert hat, lol
Brilliant concept, and choice of colours to put in the resin, it looks like a real honeycomb!
Thank you very much Liza 😀
Really enjoyed watching the process from start to finish. Using honeycomb cardboard like you have is really all inspiring, fantastic work Mike
Thanks so much Dave, this was a whole lot of fun 😀
You have a great deal of patients. You never fail to amaze,You have a wonderful imagination that allows you to work your magic.take care from a very cold Scotland.
Wow, thank you Doug, take care up there 😀
Another great turning. Really turned out very good. The honeycomb idea is genius.
Thank you very much Roger, kind of you to say 😀
It’s gorgeous! Warm, inviting light. Well done, sir! Smooch for Hooch 😘
Thank you kindly Amie and the smooch passed on as usual 😀
Very nice as usual. They make a UV resin that would filled all imperfections. Another great project.
Yes they do, I did have some but it has gone off lol 😀
I absolutely love this! A lot of work, but man, the end result is fantastic! It has an art deco vibe.
Thanks Jane, there were a few steps but I'm glad it came out ok 😀
Love it! love the honeycomb. A rope or tube light down the center with a turned cap would be cool for an even lighting of the honeycomb. But, the creativity of the inexpensive material is what also impresses me always with stuff like this.
Thanks so much, I like the rope light idea 😀
It has always been an idea of mine to get a workshop, watching your channel has inspired me - I sign a lease next month. I'll need a couple of months to set it up correctly! Respect, I love your work and the calm way you explain the process and problem solving.
Wow congratulations! I would love a dedicated workshop, or at least a bit more space 😀
Very creative design. Looks like a beehive in color.
Thank you! 😊
hi hi hi from a snowy wet nova scotia buddy i love your work and the length of your videos can never be toooooo long have a great day very nice lamp you are awesome
Thanks Debra, that is very kind of you to say 😀
I like the thoughts that go into this, like you say 'proof of concept'. As it happens, I thought it turned out very well. Makes me think I might try resin myself!
Thanks so much Chris, I love using and creating with resin, it gives me so many more interesting possibilities.
Very impressive ...... very impressive indeed Mr. Holton ! I don't know how you think of all these things, but I'm glad you do. Love watching.
Thanks so much Nana, they just come to me 😀
Cheryl from Jacksonville FL..USA! Good morning and thank yew for sharing!❤🎉
Good morning/evening! and thanks 😀
Very mid-century modern. Cool!
Haha thanks Jen 😀
Awesome. The honeycomb goes well with the bee vase you made.
Yes it does 😁 I seem to have a theme going here 🤣
Gorgeous lamp!!! 😊 Love the honeycomb design. The resin color is perfect and the yew compliments it very nicely! Cheers!
Thanks so much! 😊
Sometimes I just don't have the words so wow I guess will have to work 😮
Thanks Troy, this is certainly an interesting one lol 😀
Nice video, Mike.
The vase looks great.
Yew is also a beautiful wood for turning.
As it was, from now on you can always take your writing pad and pen with you. So that you can immediately put your ideas on paper. 😁
Haha thanks I usually have a notebook on me at all times 😀
I loved how the resin colors all blended into a light honey-orange. Looks like a fantasy lamp, very organic!
Thank you! 😊
What a lovely lamp, and it ‘turned’ out well. As always, thank you for inviting me round to share. Mike, I am planning on visiting Newark on Friday 8th March. If you are free that day we could have a coffee? 🌞
Hi Ray, thanks 😀. I would love to go but but I don't have time. I start the new semester at Uni on Monday so I have a lot to get done. Have fun, Mike
Hi Mike, you do have some crazy ideas that are very inspiring. More of the same please.
Thanks Edward, I'll always try my best 😀
I wouldn't want to cause headaches to you, but I would (and I think you would too) love you see try something like this. It would be a nice lampshade.
It would make a pretty good lampshade thanks 😀
Yet again, you've pushed the boundary using a bottle protector and resin. A true pioneer 👍
Thanks so much, that is very kind of you to say 😀
Mr Holton i think it is beautiful and it has been one of the most interesting builds I have seen. Thank you!
Wow, thank you Jessie, that is so nice of you to say 😀
What an interesting piece! I love the honeycombe aspect, and the overall shape/outline is perfect.
Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much! 😀
I would have never thought of that. Interesting idea
Thanks Paul 😃
A beautiful challenge! Again, thanks so much for sharing 😊
You're welcome Maria 😀
Love the honeycomb!! Great project!!
Thanks so much! 😀
Hi Mike I am a recent subscriber to your videos and have now enjoyed the last three. Don't apologise for the length. In my opinion, the longer the better. I am looking forward to viewing the more "historic" videos. Great improvisation in using the bottle protector to create the honeycomb effect. Keep 'em coming!
Welcome aboard and thanks! I'll do my best 😀
That is a nifty lamp.
Thanks Jake 😁
Very cool honeycomb lamp!
Thank you! Cheers Jerimiah 😀
This is AWESOME! I love the fact that I'm not the only one that builds my own, what I refer to as "janky ass molds". But they WORK! Beautiful piece and I love the honeycomb cardboard. Woohoo to the excellent hollowing out job!!! Take care from Colorado!
Haha I HATE building molds lol but it worked so I'm happy 😀
Very well done. As you said, a big challenge. Very happy the piece held together. I was surprised how much the resin colours mixed. So difficult to get the resin to go into all the nooks and crannies.
A very nice result and piece of art.
If you do another one, consider a flickering style LED. Some LED tea lights have a flickering effect when lit. I think the flickering would look good inside the resin.
You mastered sealing the resin this time.
Dave.
Thanks Dave and the flickering led is a great idea, I'm off to find one, thanks! 😁
Nice light Mike
Thanks Michael 😀
That turned out really nice. I think a small round mirror, set facing down into the top, would reflect the light back into the lamp and make it shine a bit more even and brighter.
That is a good idea! I will look into it 😀
Somehow, every week you manage to come up with a very unique idea! I never would have imagined something like this. Thank goodness for that wet cardboard!
Thank you very much Ronnie, you never know where inspiration will come from 😀
Fascinating! The lamp came out very nice, Mike!
Glad you liked it Jim, all the best, Mike 😀
Love the look of the resin although different lighting options may look more effective. Thanks again for all your VODs and skills you share...😊
Thanks 👍someone did suggest a flickering led which would look great! 😀
Thank👍 Another first on CZcams . Looks amazing. Cheers
Thanks Colin, I have had a few firsts, I think it is because I'm daft enough to have a go 😅
Just WOW! You have some amazing ideas and manage to work out the design. I'm really impressed with your innovation and ability to bring it to successful fruition. A brilliant project and a beautiful lamp.
Thank you very much Rachel, I'm just glad it worked 😀
Hi Mike
Well done for your second Resin project . I think the it turned out great !!! 😃 Thanks for sharing
Thanks Brian, I have done a few before but this is the second after about a 6 month gap and using this new resin😀
Such a unique vase, very pretty!
Thank you! 😊
To keep the colors of epoxy separate u need to wait until they just start to get tacky. That will keep them from competly mixing into 1 color. But mix enough enough where they come together. Good Job. Love the corrugated cardboard/honey comb idea
Thanks for the tip Sherri and that is my opinion as well, I may do an experiment 😀
Another great piece and novel idea!
Glad you like it 😁
Very nice; looks just like a honeycomb 🙂
Thanks my friend 😀
It looks awesome make a good night light.
I think so too Rita 😀
Beautiful little lamp. Great idea.
Thank you! 😊
Lovely bit of art and function, well done 👍
Thanks so much 😀
It's like your own odd Olympic torch, though I was worried when the third drill was coming out!
I hope you weren't too disappointed when all those colours mixed together into brown. It is a lovely dark honey brown, though.
I was a little disappointed about the colours mixing but I'm still getting used to the new resin. I am however happy with the overall colour at the end 😀
Hi Mike, as you say it is surpring where the ideas come from. If your like me I find it hard to stop thinking how unusual things can be incorperated in my ideas. You are ahead of me I'm to chicken to try them out. I need your confidence or more practice I think. What a very artistic piece this is it makes me think of spring with all the honey bees around. Thanks again for the video Looking forward to the next adventure you take us on.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thanks Roy, confidence comes from practice, but I would say my main skill is that I don't mind if a project fails, the more I fail the more I learn, and the more I learn the less I eventually fail 😀
I love it! I’m going to have to make a pair of these for my daughter in her favorite colors. Thanks Mike!
No problem Branda, have fun 😀
That was a gnarly idea and so glad you were able to bring it to life... I know I would have stuffed it up 5 minutes in lol. Thanks for sharing and looking forward to more of your talent
Thanks!, to be honest, I had no idea if it would even work lol 😀
This is such a cool design. Even if I know you were going for a honeycomb look, it also could pass for faceted crystal glass from a distance 👍
It could, thanks for the thought 😀
When you started, your bassett looked like he was at a rock concert.
Great piece, Mike. A very clever idea.
Haha thank you very much! 😂
Lovely little lamp!
Thanks my friend 😀
Very cool lamp! Love the honey comb look
Thanks so much! 😀
I think this turned out really cool, but I would also be interested to see how that honeycomb cardboard looks with completely clear resin!
Interesting idea, I may try again if I can find a suitable project 😀
Very creative Mike! It's crazy where inspiration can come from
I know, I find it everywhere 😀
Nifty idea. I expected to see more separate colors, but the blended color is great.
Me too Cindy but I'm still getting used to the resin, I'll get there 😀
Unusual and creative Mike, good job!!
Thank you very much! 😀
