  • Dan Dillon watches the trailer for the new Disney movie, Wish. He discusses the story and allegory that's apparent in the trailer, and whether he would take his own family to see it in theaters. What do you think, is this on point, or is it too soon to tell?

Didn't they already explore this theme in Bruce Almighty? Bruce granted everyone's prayers and immediately realized that it was a bad idea. Maybe the disney of old would have had this movie go in a similar direction, but I have a feeling that won't happen for this film in today's selfish society. It's a shame. It could have taught a great lesson.

In theory, this movie would work if it was otherwise a compelling and thorough deconstruction of the whole "when you wish upon a star" theme that the Disney company is built on. It would have a more somber and cynical tone compared to every other movie they've done as it would explore deep themes about ambition and the uncomfortable truths of life and existence.
The story could end with the main character coming to terms with the fact that not all wishes are meant to come true and accepting reality for what it is, and no matter what happens, life will still go on. However, there are good and noble things in life that are worth wishing for, even if there are no guarentees. She could even reconcile with the king who would otherwise be portrayed as a reasonable authority/parental figure who really wants what's best for his people, even if it's an overwhelming and often thankless responsibility.
On a side note, the wishing star could play the role of villain who hides behind a veil of faux-innocence and manipulates people who dream of something more and takes advantage of their naivety for it's own gain, and thus cause inadvertent damage to it's victims and everyone around them. It could contrast with the king as a representation of chaos, destruction, and temptation. This could also show that the pursuit of one's hopes and dreams, at the cost of their happiness and well-being, can indeed change them for the worse and drive them to the point of insanity or despair.

I wish I thought you were wrong. I really do. This could be an interesting set up where she learns the dangers of granting everyone's wish and the king turns out to be very wise in only granting the wishes that will benefit everyone. But I don't hold out much hope that they will have a good moral in this movie. I'd be thrilled to be proved wrong, however.

I am just flabbergasted at how many people seem okay with only one person deciding what the people need or don't need. Where have we seen that before? Oh yeah: in dictatorships where the people are at the mercy of one individual person.
Here's the thing: it's one thing for the king to be cautious about granting every wish. But he should not be the sole decider on which wishes should be granted. He should have a council of advisors or judges to help him decide which wish is worthy of being granted and which one is not.
I feel like Asha will learn as the movie progresses that the king may be right in that not every wish should be granted. But she still has to stop him because he's using the magic to build up his own power and thus will become a tyrant.

Agree with your take. In my opinion, a fairytale should 'resonate' with something deep inside us. The trailer for this movie? Just confused me. Because the king was simultaneously shown to take wise actions with good results (i.e. discern which petitions to grant keeping in mind "what is good for" the community -- with a result that his kingdom lives in peace!) but juxtaposed against imagery of the king having evil looking eyes and a deranged voice.
Obviously the king is portrayed as having human flaws like vanity ("I am a handsome king"), and that's fine to portray (he could be a good protagonist learning to overcome his flaws). But insofar as the king seems like a metaphorical stand-in for Christ? King of a kingdom, with the power to grant wishes (prayers) but answering "no" to many, not just "yes", which God does for our good? Portraying that as an inherently evil figure, seems definitely toxic anti-Christ messaging.
Praying thanksgiving to Christ right now for being a good king. Even when the answers to my prayers have been "no" or "not yet". I'm not entitled to his gifts; I can continue to be grateful for those I've received and hopeful for more in the future, without becoming rebellious and thinking it's my 'right' to grasp at more than he's chosen for me to have at this time. I hope that many more take this opportunity to thank our good king for his goodness to us, and reject unhealthy caricatures like this movie seems to promote, misguiding young minds about what it means for a king (and father, and God) to be good and loving.

While I get what you mean, king magnifico is not exactly "jesus". The king is not entirely like jesus, but more like a government/monarch of sorts. Matt walsh pointed that out perfectly. Then again, ant man 3 had a subtle metaphor that makes me think they are not really inclusive and are doublling down on attacking those who oppose them. In terms of november movies, I think i'll watch trolls band together instead. It has traditional values like a natural biological romance, and the reoccurring theme in the movie of the importance of family. It also has evil twins who want to be famous by stealing someone else's talent, not a metaphor for toxic masculinity, or whatever garbage disney likes to call it. Recent disney movies attack traditional values, but the bad guys, minions the rise of gru, puss in boots the last wish, the super mario bros movie, ruby gillman, and trolls band together do not. They don't attack christians or conservatives, they don't beat you over the head with political lectures. They are actually inclusive with everyone including christians, they have strong, but likable female characters like poppy, princess peach, and kitty softpaws. They are actually for kids with no weird grooming bullcrap. Just good entertaining content to enjoy, just like og disney, which is why I am celebrating 100 years of disney. To watch and think about their old stuff, like og pinocchio from 1940. If you are really concerned about wish, just watch any of the movies I mentioned. Super mario was really good. If you haven't seen it, I would definitely recommend it.☺☺😎

Christianity is in rapid decline (particularly in the United States) for a REASON and based on surveys....a lot of it has to do with the behaviors of Christian believers themselves. So, everything is not going to center on a Christian religious view. History is full of examples of *real...Historical* Kings who've govern their Kingdoms poorly. Everything doesn't have to align on a Christian viewpoint about human behaviors (so funny since Christians create their own unhealthy caricatures of everyone else). Real life doesn't revolve around Christians. The narcissism is absolutely insane (as is the seemingly recent mass religious hysteria labeling nearly everything "satanic" or "anti-Christ" that doesn't bow to their unsupported faith-based worldview) assuming such an opinion is deserving of respect by default. Look you guys. I like the Babylon bee. And disagree with the modern definition of woke.
But this is a time I have to disagree. Just let me explain myself.
First the animation. I thought it sucked at first. But turning up the quality helps. But there’s actually several 4k ultra hd versions of wish teaser and trailers. The best ones I found are from Trailer Spot. The animation is stunning. It’s just Disney irresponsibly sabotaging the impression of the animation form what will really be the final movie. Besides, it already suffered a lot of compression from CZcams.
Now for the story we saw. We see that Asha is meant to be the apprentice of a magical king who can grant wishes.
King Magnifico takes her to see the wishes of Rosas. He explains to her that people give their wishes to him. And he decides which ones are good for Rosas.
But keep in mind he is the villain. What does he think is good for Rosas? Asha then asked him if some of the wishes will never be granted. Not even seeming against it. It came off as a genuinely curious tone.
It wasn’t the kind of tone that she would say if she instead said. “¿What do you mean some of these won’t ever be granted?!”
Magnifico replied that he doesn’t even grant most of them. Asha then says more assertively, that the people deserve more than what they are being given. But she never said she thought all the wishes should be granted.
Only to be somewhat aggressively brushed of by Magnifico. Saying that he decides what everyone deserves. But what does he think everyone deserves?
It’s made even worse when you hear out people who watched the Wish preview. They found out that the king actually doesn’t care how good or bad a wish is. If it benefits him, it’s granted.
And if King Magnifico actually did what he claimed to do. There would be more variety in who does and doesn’t get their wish. Instead of the huge imbalance of most wishes left un-granted. And the few that benefit him no matter how good or bad are granted.
Also. I have to greatly disagree with you with comparing Magnifico to God. God created the universe and everything in it. Magnifico is one of those dudes that is playing god, which is insulting to pretend that your like god if your human. Even if you have the power to grant wishes.
Not to mention he erases people’s memory of their wish if it’s not granted. It was also in the preview. All to avoid conflict he could deal with without doing it.
Considering all of this. It should be obvious why Magnifico can simply not be compared to God. And don’t give me the “he’s the king, he should decide what is good for his kingdom.”
Says the same people that disagree with politicians and presidents. Don’t be hypocritical. If you could do what Asha seems to do to politicians you know are not good.
You’d do it unless your a coward. Unless your afraid of everyone thinking your a traitor to your country or are on the wrong side of things. Which is something Asha will seem to have to face.
This story seems to follow with the message of. “Sometimes the people in power you may think are good, may turn out to not be as good as they actually are. Don’t be afraid to stand up to them. Fight for a better future not for yourself, but for everyone around you.”
It’s not like the recent ones or “fight the patriarchy or whatever” and that was something those character’s did for themselves.
But considering all of this information. It’s likely Asha isn’t doing this for herself. And actually cares about her home Rosas. And wants the best for it. This is about fighting for something bigger than yourself. Not about fighting against god. It is ridiculous to make such a claim. But not being afraid of what people will think of you. There will be challenges on the way sure. But that’s just part of life.

I'll give this movie a chance, in fact, I'm going to watch it on opening day with my sisters, my niece and my nephew. Anyway, you know how in the teaser trailer released in the summer they do this thing where they show title cards to remind viewers of six of their past films? These films were "Frozen," "The Lion King," "Moana," "Cinderella," "Beauty and the Beast" and "Encanto." One CZcamsr said "it's obvious you ain't that same studio anymore." I have to agree with that statement. I think it seems kind of desperate, especially considering one of they films they listed in that trailer was made while Walt Disney himself was still alive. Just to be funny, I imagine other films being listed in that teaser, including but not limited to those that didn't do so hot at the box office: From the studio that brought you "Home on the Range," "Fun and Fancy Free," "Dinosaur," "The Black Cauldron," "Hercules," "Meet the Robinsons."

He was a fallen angel, not a shooting star. Puss in boots the last wish has a shooting star that is just that, a shooting star that came from a nebula. In the case of which, it's not exactly how you are claiming it to be. Please don't make things unnecessarily religiously symbolic when they're not. The story begins when the Moors hid one of their treasures, promised to come back and retrieve it, but never did. The only witness to know the secret hiding spot of the treasure was a goat, who became the guardian of the buried riches. Since then, dozens of treasure hunters have tried to find it, but the goat uses his beautiful golden coat to lure them underground into traps, where terrible dragons await to devour them. Not to mention the environments look lacking. It makes it look more bland rather than stylized. The models look unfinished rather than cel shaded. While I agree and understand the arguments here, there may be surprises and twists in the film that make it more realistic and effective in its messaging. Furthermore, we don’t know all the details for the kings intentions and there’s likely more to it than it looks in the trailers. Define what he thinks is good for Rosas. Doesn’t mean he is doing good for the kingdom but maybe only for himself and his reign. Like maybe some wishes threaten his reign and control according to him and refusing to grant wishes while making them forget is his way of crushing any opposition to the power he’s obsessed with. Asha likely has good intentions for her people and the kingdom, not just rebelling for the heck of it. Let’s wait for the reviews, but I’m still cautiously optimistic.

@@AussieDisneyGirl Hey, AussieDisneyGirl, there is a comment on this video's comments section from user, Gray Martineau which states the following:
"In theory, this movie would work if it was otherwise a compelling and thorough deconstruction of the whole "when you wish upon a star" theme that the Disney company is built on.
This could also show that the pursuit of one's hopes and dreams, at the cost of their happiness and well-being, can indeed change them for the worse and drive them to the point of insanity or despair."
Okay, comment over. What do you think?

I was thinking it was an allegory against religion after seeing tonight, Christianity in particular. Interesting hearing a Christian or at least Christianity-favoring perspective on the movie said so well - good thing too that these trailers spoil so much I guess lol. I can see how applying those critical questions to parents and God will enable rebellion to authority, especially in applying personal power to pursue impermissibilized & potentially perilous prayers. But that’s the supposedly but surreptitiously not good God King’s detrimental depowerment approach, to willfully withhold information on mass in an ignorance is bliss fashion. When knowledge is power working to keep it at bay is keeping those people weak enough to wield or govern. It is a choice of consequence to censor media from those under your care, to seek to stifle their growth like unwanted weeds, even where it would be good for them for fear it won’t be good for those above them. Children can be inspired to topple power structures that confine their potential even at their own expense - far more cunning kings don’t let their Asha equivalents access their inner sanctum’s secrets to even risk that awakening’s outbreak. Just cancel that whole social cancer gateway to own overthrown hell deal before it’s begun, what was that faith-fueled fool thinking ^ ^ ‘ ?

The animation just isn't there for a 100 years of Disney. Songs are okay for kids but not epic like in other movies. The laziness in the animation is remarkable. They don't even use the rules of simplistic animation. Place your characters at the left a third or the right a third of the way to allow the eyes to be drawn to the whole scene. They really took shortcuts on the animation if this is the best of the movie scenes. Very disappointed. Typical Disney in the last 6 years with a female lead that has no faults that they have to overcome to get where they are. Sick of straight Mary Sues in all their movies. Let the main characters have flaws they overcome so you can identify with them. Disappointing is all I can say for this writing. I don't care one way or another if it succeeds, but in the end this won't be a classic used for reference of true Disney animation or story writing.

And that perhaps when you use that rebel button you could make some unfair problems more fair. For example, segregation, that was a very unfair problem in that time of society. And then MLK Jr. came up and led a REBELLION which ended up making that issue more fair and equal. Now me personally likes the animation as it is a new princess movie about the wishing star.

Clearly you're either a dumbass or you're biased. Clearly the Trailer show this is the plot summary, that Asha genuenly believes all wishes should be granted without question, and portrays the King (the "villain") as being a selfish man who won't grant everyone's wishes, but he's clearly not in the wrong here, granting every wish only leads to catastrophe, but the trailer clearly seems to say otherwise.

“Is god really good?” “Are my parents good for following him?” “This is not what I want my daughters to ask?” My question would be why? Why wouldn’t you want your daughters to ask is god good? Why wouldnt you want your daughters to find their own truth, find what they believe in, question why they should believe in god, question why you do? Then they can make the educated and informed decision for themselves as to what they choose to believe in and live their lives being true to themselves and their beliefs. Just because you believe does not mean they have to. They are individuals, they have their own minds, their own beliefs. Just because they might not match yours does not make it wrong, and just because they question your faith does not make it bad. Educate your sons and daughters to think for themselves and follow their own path, do not force them to follow yours. Let them question everything, learn, grow and become the person they want to be, not the person you think they should be. You are not here to create carbon copies of yourselves, you are here to educate and advise and hopefully lead them to their own path. Isn’t that what Disney teaches us? Be true to yourself, and if that means being different from your parents so be it. I truly hope this movie shows that, and not that you have to keep quiet and believe what you parents believe because ‘what your parents believe is what matters’. 😡

As a former disney die hard, the animation quality has dropped big time. It dosen’t look like a good story. And the star thingy really? I've seen the mario movie twice this year and it has far more potential then what disney is producing and considering that fact that it comes on top of 4 flops this year. Yeah, i'd rather watch transformers, sonic or mario. Then disney's rushed out woke garbage. So i'm skipping this and i recommend to everyone, if you want too. Have better fits for your bucks, then buy mario and sonic the hedgehog 2. They are much better, so vote with your wallets and not support disney. So your video spot on and you deserve a sub.

    • @susannasilva8135
      @susannasilva8135 Před 8 měsíci +3

Kids do make this connection. My son was sad because his snowman didn't come to life, when he wished for it to. I told him that wishful thinking does not have any power. But thankfully, we have a Father in Heaven who hears our prayers and knows what we need. He doesn't just grant wishes. He knows us and knows what's best for each of us! In the end, he decided to pray for what he needed(a friend) and God answered his prayer! God is not like the villain in this movie at all! If they portray Him like that, it makes Him sound like an egocentric tyrant! That's not God at all! He is good!

Every conscious human being knows Disney was early woke, early liberal in making every movie as dystopian as possible. Bambi is anti-2A/hunting, the rest are sappy activist kool-aid sipping concoctions of animals are smarter than humans, are above humans or should rule over humans. Never was a Disney fan from my initial viewing as a young kid. Still the same rubbish in psychopathy.
This movie review reminds me of Jesus's warning:
    Mat 24:9-14
“Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come."
