The Retcon that Explains Gravity Falls' most Polarizing Episode!

  • Roadside Attraction is arguably the most polarizing Gravity Falls episode. One reason is the why the gang would take a roadtrip right after the Mystery Shack has been Bill proofed? It's a question that has alluded fans for years now!
    But within Journal 3 lies one retcon quote, that changes it all and makes GF's most controversial episode, likely the brainchild of one of its most beloved or hated characters...depending on how into the fandom you are, lol.
    This is the Roadside Attraction Retcon!

    Thank you so much for the support and love on this video. Been a bit rough with all the UMG blocks that I've been dealing with but seeing this video do well makes me so happy. I have some really exciting projects coming soon on the channel that I hope you all will stick around to see. 2024, now with the Book of Bill coming, is shaping up to be a very fun year for Gravity Falls. Even if UMG's greedy ass is wiping away all GF music off CZcams, the fandom lives on in the face of their stupidity!

      I believe Soecity of the Blind Eye is the worst episode of GF because it waste what could have been a season long storyline and leaves too many questions unanswered.
      If your going to introduce the idea of a cult made of reoccurring characters it's a terrible idea to have that cult be defeated in one episode. Cults make great villain groups because they feel like they have so much power and influence that they can never be completely erased.
      If I was writing this episode I would have just made it that the gang and old man M go on a treasure hunt instead of creating a group whose gimmick is they kidnap and erase people's memories even though characters like the twins still have all there memories.
      It could have been an amazing idea to see the twins having to spend an entire season trying to uncover the truth of a cult and finding out who they can trust. There is no way I believe 5 regular people can take down a cult they discovered in the same day.
      Also do I not understand how the writers can have Ford be around for muliple and yet he only gets to meet with old man M when the show is about to end.

    In the episode commentary track, Alex says that the episode was purposefully light so the crew could focus their attention on the remaining episodes of the series.
    That being said, Alex did concede that it might've worked better if it wasn't sandwiched between so many story-driven episodes. It also didn't help that series would often go on prolonged hiatuses following a major plot point only to return with a small standalone episode - feel this is more applicable to Steven Universe than Gravity Falls.

    If you remember, Ford was amazed when Bill told him that he couldn't escape Gravity Falls. Sure, he did understand Gravity Falls's natural law of weirdness magnetism (as he illustrated to Dipper with the jellybeans), but he seemed genuinely shocked that Bill couldn't escape Gravity Falls. So if this theory is correct, it means that Ford had *guessed* that Bill wouldn't be able to escape, or at least he knew that Bill would take over Gravity Falls *first,* and he hoped that if the worst were to happen, he would have time to defeat Bill with his quantum destabilizer.

    I knew when this episode aired that it took place after NWHS.
    How did I know, you ask?
    Simple. The hot tub scene.
    In the hot tub, Stan turns around so that Dipper can see his back, and the ~~tattoo~~
    burn mark on it. As of the Stan's Tattoo short, Stan did everything to avoid showing Dipper his burn mark. But now that Dipper had been down in Ford's lab, where the image was, there was no reason for Stan to hide it anymore.

He probably didn't want them near while he figured out a solution in case he accidentally breaks the rift, until he realized the solution was at Crash Site Omega and he needed/wanted Dipper's help. Could we also make the assumption that: if bill had been released withing the shack, he'd be stuck in there for eternity without being able to break the barrier? Breaking the rift made bill reform directly on the spot. So would breaking it in the shack release him inside it? Maybe not, but I thought that's where you were going before I finished the video lol

    There's also the idea that Ford wanted to avoid using the zodiac at all costs. Bill says himself that every threat to his power was brought together "in one easy to destroy circle". Ford probably thought of this weak point beforehand and tried to send a few of the zodiac members away just in case. It kind of puts into perspective just how stubborn he was to listen to the prophecies he received (from both the witch and from the cave paintings), and how his suggestion of it at the very end was literally the last thing he could think to do. Makes me all the more curious what the zodiac would have done! Hopefully we'll get more insight in The Book of Bill.

    I don’t think Ford knew that Bill would be trapped within Gravity Falls. He never mentioned it to Dipper or anyone else even though it would be valuable information; in fact the way he talked about Bill escaping made it seem like it would be instant game over for the whole universe. He even seemed surprised at first when Bill told him he couldn’t leave the town.

  • @jaredcook4414
    @jaredcook4414 Před 7 měsíci +37

Mostly because it's the last episode right before everything goes to sh*t, and instead of preparing for the apocalypse, we get one last monster of the week episode, one last Season 1-esc episode, with no Ford, and no Bill, right before Weirdmaggedon. It's like, "Hey, here's why you got into the show. Over the next four episodes, we will be wrapping up, so have this before we do that!"

    The two issues I have with this theory are:
    1. Ford wouldn’t just send Dipper away because he knows what he’s capable of and he knows Dipper wants to be a part of it.
    2. The biggest flaw that I see in the theory is that Ford couldn’t have concluded they’d be safe outside the barrier, because he didn’t even know the barrier was affecting Bill until Weirdmageddon

    • @lapris7380
      @lapris7380 Před 7 měsíci +1

      Good points but a possible rebuttal would be
      1. At the end of the day it is his nephew and this wasn’t just the discovery of weird things. It was the end of the literal world and so of course he wants to get both of the kids out to protect them.
      2. What you said is true but either way he knew that gravity falls was a hotspot for weird things hence why he came there in the first place. He could have just wanted to increase their chance of survival if something went wrong so they’d have time to make a plan for their safety. It’s like a tornado. It may start in one area and spread but you’ll be more safe/face less damage in the places it spread to than if you were right where it started.

    • @starlightmoonstone1260
      @starlightmoonstone1260 Před 7 měsíci +3

      @@lapris7380 1. While I can see your point, I don’t think Ford is like that. Stan would do that if he had the choice, and I think originally Ford would’ve sent them away to protect them and to get them out of his way, but after the last Mabelcorn, Ford knows Dipper has some connection with Bill as well and he knows how badly Dipper would want to be a part of it. Infact, when Weirdmageddon happens, Ford asks Dipper for help and they originally go to defeat Bill together. If his goal was protecting Dipper, he would’ve told him to stay in the shack during Weirdmageddon, but instead he says “will you follow me?” And then he specially brings Dipper along despite the danger, because he knows that it‘a what Dipper wants to and he sees himself in Dipper.
      2. The problem with this theory is that the previous episode was literally about protecting themselves from Bill so that he couldn’t interfere with them. Ford even says “as long as we’re inside our minds are safe” meaning that according to his knowledge at the time, if he was really worried about protecting them he would’ve forbidden them from leaving the shack entirely and would’ve told them they had to stay there until Bill is dealt with. Relocating them anywhere outside of the shack would mean that Bill could get to them, at least that’s what he thought.
      :)

    This makes so much more sense!
    The episode did feel out of place, but it was a last ditch effort for Ford to be a hero.
    I feel like a huge fix the episode could have used, was instead of having the shipping B plot, have it be a Ford plot that contrasts the happy Road Trip, with more hopeless attempts to fix the rift.
    Maybe toss in Wendy to that story, so she has a moment with Ford too.
    And have Mabel and Dipper instead begin to realize their summer is coming to an end, and as that plot begins to end, they get bittersweet with Mabels friends saying they still appreciate this short time they had together. (A small analogy for how short the actual show is, but how still incredibly enjoyable it is)
    And Fords story begins to have a lighter end, thanks to Wendy inspiring him. Maybe have him start off a bit into thinking facing Bill would be a suicide mission, but he has to take it. But seeing just how capable Wendy is, and how she retells some events from the past. That the rest of the family is just as strong, if not stronger together. Ford takes this advice, and eventually leads to finding what exactly they need to fix the rift, leading to the next episode.

    Main thing I like was the Marilyn stuff joining to Owl House, but upon trying to look into it further, there are some unfortunate holes:
    One thing is Eda's portal - Thanks to Them seems to imply the cabins front doorway itself is the portal when Eda's side is active, rather than an identical folding door appearing in its front room as previously speculated and the DVD audio from Ep 18 implied. That revelation also has me questioning two things when Eda discovered it in Ep 23: it blink and disappeared upon folding up, and the eyeball has a gash that never got explained.
    So if the earth portal is restricted to the cabin in Gravesfield, how did Eda get from there to Vegas (Dana also said she'd been there)? Remember the Isles is only Vermont size, so probably a long way via staff...
    And the other conflict, the age gap. With Owl House never really getting a solid year for current day, I mostly coined 2019 as per Ep 1's completion and Summer 2020 didn't yet exist. But then, ep 33 has a calendar with Monday August 22nd suggesting 2016 (which contradict Ep 14's fidget spinner joke) or even 2022. I imagine they used August 22nd as that was AOAW 's premiere date and was the point that really started to break Luz, but with Ep 4 a week after 1, 5 apparently the next day(?), over a month later is 18 and 19, then a week and a half to 20, I thought S2 started at the 2-month mark of Luz's 3 months at Summer camp. Then Ep 23 shows Vee had already returned and 33 says it's August. Just when did Luz leave? Not that Gravity Falls didn't have that too, with NWHS having sunset at 11pm at least and going from dumb things on Saturday into lazy Tuesday.
    Anyway, when trying to place the Vegas situation in Stan's decade across the country before Gravity Falls, the ship got rather wrecked as if the show was in 2019, he curse and portal would be around the late 80s, but Stan's decade was around '71-83. Not to mention how much younger Eda would be as both 3 decade flashbacks, Stan was in his 30s and Eda was a teenager.

    From MSLB, I think they said that the crew had a road trip between seasons that the ep was inspired after, and they decided to put it right before the climax as the calm before the storm. A part of me wonders if the Ford bits in the journal were worked in after the fan responses to make sense of its placement story wise, plus a few Mabel bits like the Sock Opera note and I think Carpet Diem. Side note, I may be getting a witness on a modern fan's developing opposal to Mabel (just finished Ep 30); as for myself, while I could sort of see where the opposers were coming from, I didn't really want to hate on Mabel. And also watching folks like you and MSLB also help in identifying what Alex probably meant for her and Ford's characters at this point. Ill also mention the 3 year old fic saga Return to the Falls, where at one point, Mabel brings up Weirdmageddon with the same awkwardness as the graphic novel but Pacifica didn't blame her for it. Mostly the author mentioned that to 'get it over with' and I view the sprinklings of Mabel calling herself the best as a comical raspberry to the haters. She also dissed on S&P, so props. And before this 2013 summer, she attempted to date a girl who lost her hand to a donut machine, only to ditch the extremities, saying only *she* can do stunts like that. "No one out-Mabels the Mabel" (I also like imagine her and Molly McGee as bi, mainly the blue purple pink tailed shooting star in her sticker book and bike helmet.)
    And luckily, having watched Rebecca Rose in tune with TOH S1B, I also never took up a grudge on Camila. In fact when Rebecca reviewed YL saying "so many call her a bad mom", I was honestly surprised to hear that. And luckily most of the fics I found pre S2 seemed to reflect that on not antagonizing Camila. Mostly she was either shipped with Eda so Luz could get both her mommas and we had yet to learn of her dad or Raine (who were teased the same way), and sometimes Camila giving Amity some much needed motherly love (my mindset of Odalia's a bad mom, Camila is not). And while I thought the AUs of Amity meeting her at a young age would be mostly debunked with Thanks to Them showing Luz wasn't born in Gravesfield, I have found a fic that managed the S3 stuff called Dreamers Big and Small. Amity at age 8 having just cut ties with Willow and trying to avoid getting her hair dyed green (and semi failing) runs into the boiling rain in the woods, desperately wished for happiness, was transported by the cabin. As Luz wandered off looking for flowers for her dad's grave, she heard the witch sobbing and Camila took her in and got suspicious towards Amity's obedience for her age, knowing it was likely out of fear.

    Well I think it's mostly a breather episode. While I don't hate this episode, it is weird that Dipper and Pacifica aren't mentioned.
    It's not my least favorite. However, the main problem with it doesn't make that much since Bill can't leave gravity falls.

  • @rowan404
    @rowan404 Před 7 měsíci +1

    I didn’t even know this was a point of discussion. Your “theory” was my assumption. Since the bubble was around Gravity Falls in particular, it made perfect sense that Ford would want the kids out of there.

    A good theory, although I'm still trying to wrap my head around Ford's reaction to hearing about the weirdness magnetism keeping Bill and co. trapped in Gravity Falls during weirdmageddon, he sounded like he hadn't known about/considered this. Maybe it's just me, Idon't know. Regardless, I still see Ford sending his family away so that, if weirdmageddon does start before they get back, they'll return and see what's going on and know to stay away (not that they would).

  • @archieharrodine3925
    @archieharrodine3925 Před 7 měsíci +1

    I like the the idea behind the theory, but there is another large flaw with it , being the fact that Ford was surprised that Bill was trapped in the town, as if you watch the moment when Bill tells him that, he is just now realising why Bill is trapped in! Hence, he wasn’t aware that not being in Gravity falls was safe.
    However, there are a couple other things which I think can be considered to explain it:
    1. The shack is still impenetrable. See, the worry is that leaving the shack, the Pines can get possessed by Bill. However, lets say that one of them does get possessed, well, Bill wants to destroy the rift… which is in the shack, so he has to enter it while possessing someone. However we see in weirdmageddon 3, that his magic cannot enter the shack AT ALL, it completely rejects him. Meaning that what the shield is really doing, is protecting the rift.
    2. The diagrams depict the rift totally exploding and blowing up the house, Ford had no exact idea what would happen if the rift broke so he was research it. If the rift had exploded, while the rest of the family was in there, then they would be totally defenceless, hence he sent them on a trip so they would be okay… if he blew up the shack with the rift

    Still think it's accurate even with Dipper mention. After all, Ford never wanted Dipper for just Bill related stuff. Also, I think he wasn't sure if the solvent was ready, or how much it was cracking. Still better to have them away just in case. Knowing him, if he had no solution, he might've broken it during RA to prevent them from being involved, it's not the weirdest thing about him.

    It would have helped the episode if there was more time during the pre-title scene, having Ford there trying to encourage Stan to “hurry along now” in an almost joyful manner, showing that Ford wants Stan to leave with the kids quickly but covering his intent with a facade of “hope you have a wonderful enjoyable road trip”

    • @santosic
      @santosic Před 6 měsíci +1

      That would have probably helped a little, yes, because we'd know right away that Ford was up to something and this sudden out of the blue roadtrip had something to do with it. The hype of that mini mystery would have overridden some of the negative feelings some people had for the episode. It sill would probably considered the show's worst, but at least it'd probably less polarizing.

    There are a few holes in this theory 1) There is weirdness in places that aren't in Gravity Falls. They run away from a spider woman in the episode 2.) They still would have had to go back to the shack which had the barrier 3.) They are only gone for a few days.

    • @craycraywolf6726
      @craycraywolf6726 Před 7 měsíci +11

      1. Yes but remember Gravity Falls still has a weirdness barrier as explained in Weirdmageddon pt 3, so Bill couldn't get outside of the town. While there is other weirdness in the world, I think Ford was way more concerned with a dream demon wanting to literally break reality than a random spider person.
      2. Weirdmageddon caused time to halt. If Ford knew this would happen then a few days is plenty of time to solve the issues and keep the family safe.

      ^^ and also in the episode with the FBI guys it showed that gravity falls was the paranormal activity hot spot. Compared to the other places the weirdness was much more prominent and like everything weird rested there. It would also explain why the weirdness was trapped in gravity falls at the end. Weird may be able to come in but it can’t leave hence why so much of it resides there.

    I think that this theory definitely makes the episode make a lot more sense to be where it is! My only problem with Ford's plan - if everyone returned to find that Weirdmageddon had begun, I highly doubt that Dipper and Mable would be convinced not to go in and investigate / try to save Ford. Although I think Stan would likely try convince them to stay outside (knowing that it would be dangerous, but also that Ford would likely have it under control) I don't think he would be successful. They care about ford as well of course, and with no communication don't know what his plan is or how he is doing... but who knows!

    • @santosic
      @santosic Před 6 měsíci

      That'd be an interesting alternate scenario that'd be cool to explore; like, Ford sends them away because he wants to figure out how to stop the rift from cracking inside of the Bill-proof Shack while they're safely away from the town. And then, the rift does crack while he's doing so, causing Weirdmageddon to happen while everyone else is away and Ford is safely inside the Shack by himself. The rest of the family comes back shortly after that to see everything in chaos and the kids' first instinct is to find Ford. Cue this alternate Weirdmageddon adventure, this time with Stan already there and two new allies right from the get go.

    It is also possible that the bill-proofing bartier works both ways. If Ford was experimenting with the rift inside the shack, then if the rift broke and freed bill, he would be trapped inside the shack, and that's why he needed them out of the house for a while, so they'd be safe.

    I think this theory can still hold up. Ford sent the family away while he worked it HOW he could seal the rift, or more importantly IF it could even be done. He spent his alone time putting together the idea of using the alien adhesive after researching and looking through his journals, but he didn't want the kids around in case he came up empty. Once he determined that fixing the rift would be possible, he allowed the family to return home and decided it would be a good time to see what Dipper was made of as he needed the help.

    I know that I wasn't quite as involved in the fandom towards the end of season 2, but I'm kind of surprised Roadside Attraction of all things was disliked. I never found anything wrong with the episode personally, it was just forgettable.
    Then again I absolutely DESPISED Dipper and Mabel Vs The Future, so maybe that was me being so focused on loathing the events following Roadside Attraction to care.
    Nothing in the alien episode makes sense. The guard robots arrest people for having high heart rate. This is a massive design flaw, as it would arrest crew members in stressful situations or doing any form of exertion. Dipper fell like 5 times while carrying the rift and almost certainly would've broken it out of clumsiness alone (and therefore having the rift in either backpack was a stupid idea), and as interesting as the accidental backpack swap was, making that be the catalyst for the entire series finale was stupid. Ford should've just gotten the alien adhesive on his own

  • @winter-g

    I love this and think it's as accurate as we're gonna get, but I also wanna add on that he probably intended to do what he was writing and seal the rift, then remembered the zodiac and signs on it and that a lot of them matched with his family. At that point, he probably decided to include dipper in his science weirdness stuff since Dipper has to go all in now or be blindsided if bill ends up taking him (which bill did). He probably assumed that his family would need to be there to help take down bill if his destabilizer didn't work.
    But anywyas, that's just a theory.

    I think your theory is correct for a different reason. It likely wasn't so much that Ford wanted to try and solve the problem with the rift while everyone was gone, and more that he was worried Weirdmageddon might happen earlier than he predicted it would and wanted to make sure his family was safe just in case he was
    wrong.

It better not be because of that dumb retcon in the book that made people okay with it! I like the explanation, but they literally could have had a seen where the Love God comes back angry, demanding that they give him the potion back, and Dipper and Mable beg him not to reverse the effects, and then have him explain that the potion doesn't last that long, and that if the people are still with each other after an hour then the love is real!
