In this vid we swap out a usdm ej205 for a single avcs jdm ej205. This information pertains to usdm 02-05 wrx's. There 2 ways to do this swap, This is the way In which you would remain using your usdm ecu. The other way is to utilize the intake avcs, to do so you need a jdm 16bit single avcs ecu and it must match your cars transmission type. Auto or manaul
Using the jdm ecu renders your cobb ap useless, kinda like it was before anyway.
To tune the jdm ecu you will need an open source tune. To complete the wiring for the jdm 205 running avcs you only need to de pin 4 wires on driver side plug and add an additional 4 wires on passenger side. Iwire.com makes a simple kit for this if needed as well.

I appreciate you putting out this video. I have an '03 USDM WRX Auto and spun a rod bearing back in 2020... it's been sitting in my garage for almost 3 years and I've just gotten hold of a JDM EJ205 to put in. I've been combing through iwire pages and your video to reference everything else I should need and would need to transfer from the old engine. Hoping to get everything done in a couple weeks through a shop! Cheers.

Hi guys, thanks so much....learning a ton from watching your videos. I'm in the research phase right now and here is my goal - to swap out my US EJ205 from an 04' WRX with a JDM EJ205 with as little hassle as possible. Swap over the manifold, keep the TGVs, move over all the stuff you highlighted in your video, plug and play with my US harness and hopefully NOT have to send out for a tune. I'm thinking I can buy an AVCS equipped motor and not hook it up or do it at a later time. No switching of cam gears or wiring alterations. I see a lot of EJ205 non-AVCS motors out there but according to the IWIRE website, these are a first generation from 99-00 vehicles and I'd like the newer generation (they say 2001and new all come equipped with AVCS). See anything wrong with my thought process here? Thanks!!!

@@TheSubieSanctuary Hi guys, a question here. We've installed the engine successfully; Running the USDM ECU with AVCS not hooked up yet. Runs well but will intermittently throw a P0340 cam position sensor code where the the engine will misfire a little when under moderate load but drives fine and idles ok under no load. Code usually trips when accelerating into the mid to higher RPMs. Things I've tried to fix it: Switched out cam position sensor with the one from the JDM engine and checked their ohm readings (1.966 and 2.2 kohms), verified wiring continuity at the harness plug, and check voltage on the alternator (14.1 volts under no load and 13.45 under load - initially started with the JDM alternator and switched back to the US; exact same part numbers). We didn't have this problem before - just wondering if you have run into this after a JDM swap and if you have any suggestions. Thanks!

Recently purchased a complete, bone stock ‘05 WRX from the original owner. Had it for 3 weeks, and spun a rod bearing. So, I purchased a JDM EJ205 Non-AVCS motor. I’m planning to pull the existing USDM motor out the car this weekend. The parts you mentioned in this video to swap from the USDM to the JDM are all I need? Nothing crazy like the cam sprockets and gears. Just stick to what you mentioned and I should be alright? Lol. Just on edge and this process is making me want to bite my nails off with anxiety.

No worries, since your donor is the jdm non avcs engine. We personally dont see alot of those. To be sure just check crank gear and driver cam gear. Im 99% they will be exact same as yours anyway. But its a lot easier to check while out.
Other then that, im unfamiliar with those jdm intake manifolds. They may be the same, but if they are not, then swap over your complete intake manifold

Now, if you have a NON-AVCS to put into a 05 bone stock like me… you don’t need anything crazy or swap anything bro. I used the original turbo, manifold, etc to transfer from the old blown motor to the new one 🤙🏽🤙🏽. Now for me in the process of the swap, I replaced:

Hey The Subie Sanctuary! I've been really confused about this topic. Getting multiple opinions and just want cold, hard facts to get this straight once and for all. Here we go...
My car will not get into boost at all. It wont even come out of vacuum to generate 1 pound. I recently finished swapping over all my accessories from a tuned
    2.0 JDM NON-AVCS EJ 205 Long Block
    To a
2.0L JDM AVCS EJ205 Long block
and its still falling on its face once past 3-4k. It idles fine, runs fine in vacuum but I have no boost.
I have checked everything visually, hoses, lines, wastegate lines, everything.
Im catless all the way back. From up pipe to downpipe. So it couldn't be a clogged cat.
I hear the turbo spooling but it literally just hits a brick wall and doesn't want to give any more, even though it sounds like it does, once im at 4,000 rpm's
I've been doing more research and getting second opinions from Master Techs at Subaru and they're saying it might be because if I don't swap out the JDM to USDM Cam Gear and Crank Sprocket, they will run at "full retarded" ?
But I've ALSO heard other people saying the exact opposite. That you don't have to swap over anything. Just the Coolant crossover pipe, the cam position sensor, crank position sensor, and the coolant lines from the water pump. And the car will start/drive/build boost with no problem.
Says you HAVE TO swap the Cam Gears: czcams.com/video/FV6AONm6pxk/video.html
Says you DO NOT have to swap the Cam Gears : czcams.com/video/0sSuzHPUH8g/video.html
Or can I just simply "Block them off" and get this from IAG?: subimods.com/wrx/2002-2003-wrx/engine/internal-components/iag-black-avcs-camshaft-sensor-delete-plugs-pair-2002-2005-wrx-w-avcs-heads.html

So I have 2 questions, for the oil feed line going to the turbo. You said on the US version its cut off? Does that mean I need to remove that line in order for it to work? Second question, going the route you went is there any tuning involved or can I just throw it in and go?

The difference in the turbo line between the 2. Is the usdm 205 picks up at back of cyl head and the jdm runs from avcs solenoid across head to turbo. Leave in place and use the jdm turbo feed line.
As for tuning, you can drop this engine in and leave un tuned if your car is all stock. However I will mention a tune is always beneficial for sake of efficiency. With that being said, we have had people leave these un tuned indefinitely without issue in stock form

I just picked up a 2005 wrx, from what i understand the old owner put a jdm engine in it, im not sure what exactly what was done to it, so please overlook my lack of knowledge. However koeo the oil control valve or (avcs selonoid) clicks constantly, start the car it stops, but once over 4500 rpm it starts clicking again (like a fast clicking) and will not stop until the car is shut off. I have pulled them out and confirmed its these selonoids going nuts (driver and pass side). Dont know if its relevant but the tumble generators are not present so the plugs for them are not connected to anything. Any input on what could be causing this solenoid spaz? Im at the point of just unplugging the selonoids because i dont think their doing anything useful anyways. Will doing so hurt my engine long term or should i just let them tap away?

No, the jdm uses same spark plugs as original ej205 as well as coil packs. Always wise to put in new spark plugs though while motor is out. Typically thr jdm coil packs will have less milage and if your jdm engine came with them id use them over the original ones.
